Success for such planning would seem to depend on engaging productively with existing or readily developed social motivation within the society. This article reports on an informal investigation into how ordinary language practitioners and cultural workers in South Africa view the possibilities of contributing to the country’s emerging language dispensation, what they regard as their most useful possible contributions, and what they expect from the language planners and ‘government’ in support of South Africa’s Language Policy and Plan.
