Abalone stock enhancement at Cape Recife, Eastern Cape Province of South Africa

- Description: The potential for restocking depleted natural reefs with hatchery abalone, Haliotis midae, to support a commercial ranching venture in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa was investigated. A baseline stock assessment and analysis of historical fishery data provided compelling evidence of significant declines in the abalone stock, attributed to uncontrolled illegal fishing over the last 20 years at the study site. A ranching pilot study was undertaken where small-scale replicated seeding experiments were set up which quantified the effect of seed size, density and habitat on survival and growth of hatchery-reared abalone. Thirty-six experimental plots were seeded with 8400 abalone spread evenly over two broad habitats. Mean retrievals of seeded abalone were 17% ranging from 4 - 42% after a minimum of eight months at large. Release density and large-scale habitat had no significant effect on seed survival, but smaller seed size (40.0 ±3.7mm shell length) achieved higher (F1, 22 = 4.64, p = 0.042) retrievals than larger seed size (53 ±3.7mm). Growth rates were an average of 30% higher in the shallow sites compared deeper sites (t1, 1091 = -2.79, p = 0.005). There was seasonal component in growth with a 0.55 ± 0.04 mm per month higher rate in summer than during winter (t1, 1091 = -12.45, p < 0.001). Abalone seed releases were also conducted on a larger scale, which focused on the economic potential for commercial-scale ranching. Over 160 sites were seeded with 1.4 million hatchery reared abalone or 30 metric tonnes. Seventeen sites underwent long-term monitoring of survival with repeated sampling events on sites over a period of up to 666 days. Nine of these sites were seeded with 140800 small abalone (29 – 40 mm), three sites with 25100 medium abalone (30 – 46 mm) and five sites with 14700 large abalone (60 – 84 mm). There was a significant difference in survival between the seed sizes (F4,6329 = 304.3, P < 0.001). The Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) calculation estimated the instantaneous apparent mortality rate for small, medium and large abalone at 1.19 yr-1 , -0.9 yr-1 and -0.67 yr-1 , which equated to a survival rate of 21%, 28% and 36% per year respectively. The weighted mortality rate calculated according to the seed size differential mortality and the number of seed released for those sizes was 1 yr-1 or 25% survival. In conjunction with a conservative somatic growth rate of 1.2mm.m-1 and plausible emigration rates, a range of biomass harvesting estimates were obtained. Movement and mortality were investigated using video analysis which showed that hatchery seed had the ability to move considerably once released onto natural reefs and confirmed that mortality immediately following releases was due to the heavy predation pressure as confirmed by shell collections. This project has demonstrated that potential exists for ranching in South Africa and highlights critical factors that need to be addressed if ranching is to be an economically viable operation.

Assessing selected ecosystem services in urban green spaces in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

Urban space planning has taken this into consideration resulting in planned urban green spaces and remnant land within urban areas. Urban green spaces provide a number of ecosystem services which are beneficial to urban residents. This study sought to determine residents’ use and perception of urban green spaces in Bulawayo, the second largest city in Zimbabwe, and to quantify and value four selected ecosystem services, i.e. carbon sequestration by urban trees, urban heat island amelioration, spiritual services and firewood provision. All ecosystem services were valued using local a variety of direct or substitutive methods. Questionnaires were administered at green spaces to green space users to capture responses on reasons why they use green spaces and their perception of green spaces. Residents’ responses showed that they appreciate green spaces as multidimensional spaces which provide a number of benefits for cultural and provisioning services. The role of the green spaces in providing regulating services was not well appreciated by the residents as they did not directly experience these benefits. An association was revealed between primary purpose of visit to urban green spaces and household income. Residents in areas of medium and high density housing visited green spaces on a daily basis, whereas those in more affluent, low density housing areas visited green spaces less often, i.e. a few times a month Carbon sequestration rate was determined by measuring tree diameter within one year to determine increase in carbon sequestered. Bulawayo’s urban green spaces sequester 3 290 t/C/yr valued at approximately $13 000/yr. There was a significant difference in carbon sequestration by urban trees between formal and informal green spaces with formal green spaces sequestering more carbon. Indigenous trees were shown to sequester more carbon than exotic trees and trees with bigger stem diameter were determined sequester more carbon than trees with small diameter. The effect of urban green spaces on ambient temperature was determined by measuring ambient air temperature in green spaces and built up areas over six months. Urban green spaces in Bulawayo play a role in urban micro-climate regulation by reducing the ambient temperature in the green spaces as well as is built up areas. The mean difference between green spaces and surrounding urban areas was up to 60C, with larger green spaces generally showing larger differences. The green spaces extend their cooling effect to surrounding areas thus reducing the temperatures in surrounding residential areas thus reducing the energy demand used for indoor cooling. To determine why residents worship in green spaces, questionnaires were administered to congregation members to capture reasons why and how often they worship in green spaces, challenges faced by the congregants as well as assistance that can be given by the Bulawayo city council to improve the outdoor worship experience. Green spaces offer ideal places for worship in natural areas for congregants to be in touch with nature. The green spaces are also used by some congregations who ordinarily would worship in buildings but fail to do so due to lack of funds for rent or to purchase or construct a church building to use. The value of Bulawayo’s green spaces spiritual services was determined to be $92.50/ha/yr. Firewood provision was also determined by measuring tree diameter within one year to determine increase in fuelwood. The green spaces showed a significant difference in firewood production among sites. Formal green spaces were shown to produce more firewood as compared to informal green spaces and no difference was determined in growth rates between exotic and indigenous tree species. Assessing the outcomes and consequences of large carnivore reintroductions to the Eastern Cape, South Africa

- Description: Reintroduction is a potentially powerful tool available to conservationists to cope with species population declines. Nonetheless, it is poorly understood and past reviews tend to indicate poor results. Reintroduction, under the sensu stricto IUCN definition, must have a primary objective of conservation; however species can be released to sites in their indigenous range (reintroduction sensu lato) to meet other objectives. The outcomes of these reintroductions s.l need to be assessed to determine how effectively they achieve their varied objectives. A Web of Science review revealed that only 32.1% of 131 publications on reintroduction provided clearly defined success criteria. Using economic, ecological, conservation and problem animal management objectives as reintroduction s.l. drivers, I developed context-dependent success definitions for each objective to use in reintroduction outcome assessments. These success criteria were then used to assess the reintroductions s.l. of large carnivores, namely lion, leopard, cheetah, African wild dog, spotted hyaena, and brown hyaena, to 16 private- and state-owned reserves in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Ecotourism and ecological restoration were the most common objectives for the reintroduction of top predators to these reserves. Overall the reintroductions of large carnivores have been successful in meeting their objectives. Only African wild dogs have failed to establish in the province. Causes of objective-specific failures for the other species in some reserves included introductions of same-sex populations, lack of breeding events and changes in reserve management objectives. Assessments for leopard and brown hyaena were inconclusive due to lack of monitoring data. The reintroduction of large carnivores to the Eastern Cape Province has also resulted in the emergence of human-carnivore conflict on neighbouring properties. Carnivores have reportedly escaped from 8 reserves (61.5% of reserves) in the Eastern Cape. A total of 75 conflict events on 68 neighbouring properties (36.7% of neighbouring properties) have been reported. There is a major gap in research around conflict resulting from carnivore reintroductions and future research is required to fully understand the situation in the province in order to develop effective mitigation methods. An adaptive management approach to reintroductions is encouraged to improve monitoring and ensure reintroductions continue to meet their objectives. Furthermore, emerging consequences, such as human-wildlife conflict, and related mitigation strategies should be incorporated into management of reintroduced populations. Communities surrounding reintroduction sites should be educated on lifting baselines where conflict-causing species are recovering to ensure continued success of reintroduction undertakings. National management plans should be developed for all large carnivore species to improve the conservation value of small, fenced reserves that are typical of South African conservation, through a managed metapopulation approach. Management plans should include social, political, and economic factors that can influence the success of reintroductions and ultimate conservation outcomes.

Benthic algal communities of shallow reefs in the Eastern Cape: availability of abalone habitat

- Description: Marine ranching has been identified as an alternative to traditional aquacultural rearing and growing organisms for consumption. In the Eastern Cape, abalone ranching is a new and experimental industry. The aims of the research were to: first develop a GIS model to assist management in site selection for abalone seeding; and secondly to develop and standardize the sampling methodology in order to ground truth the sites, and assist in the monitoring and habitat identification of abalone. The GIS model developed in Chapter 3 was created using an unsupervised classification and fuzzy logic approach. Both vector and raster datasets were utilized to represent 7 different layers. Predominantly satellite imagery was used to classify the different substrate groups according to pixel colour signatures. The basic process was to apply a fuzzy rule set (membership) to rasters which gave an output raster (Fuzzification). The membership output rasters were overlaid which creates a single model output. It was found that model accuracy increased significantly as more layers were overlaid, due to the high variability within each of the individual layers. Model ground-truthing showed a strong and significant correlation (r2 = 0.91; p < 0.001) between the model outputs and actual site suitability based on in situ evaluation. Chapter 4 describes the investigation towards the optimal sampling methods for abalone ranching habitat assessments. Both destructive sampling methods and imagery methods were considered as methods of data collection. The study also evaluated whether quadrat and transects were going to be suitable methods to assess sites, and what size or length respectively they should be to collect the appropriate data. Transect length showed great variation according to the factor assessed. A transect of 15 metres was found to be optimal. Abalone counts showed no significant (p = 0.1) change in the Coefficent of Variance (CV) for transect lengths greater than 15m, and had a mean of 0.2 abalone per metre. Quadrat size showed a significant difference in functional group richness between quadrat sizes of 0.0625m2, and 0.25m2 but no difference between 0.25m2 and 1m2 quadrats for both scape and photographic quadrats. It was also found that between 5 and 10 replicates (p = 0.08) represents the functional groups appropriately using quadrats and that a 0.25m2 quadrat is most suitable for sampling. Chapter 5 describes the benthic community structure of Cape Recife shallow water reefs. Using the standardized methodology previously mentioned, 45 sites were assessed to identify the community structure. These sites were grouped into 5 different groups influenced by depth and substrate, as well as functional group composition according to a Wards classification. - Description: Ice-free regions in Antarctica provide natural laboratories for investigating and modelling change in landscapes and ecosystems. The terrestrial ecosystems in western Dronning Maud Land are potentially critical to improve current understanding of polar ecosystems, however, they remain poorly represented and under-protected. Lichen habitats were used to elucidate geomorphic-biological feedbacks that shape the landscape’s topography and biodiversity, which in turn promote environmental heterogeneity. Environmental parameters acting on two landforms were measured to determine the colonisation and growth of lichens in niche habitats. The habitats were identified and characterised, and topographic heterogeneity was found to control lichen colonisation. Micro-topographical niches provide the most stable environments for colonisation, and are preferred habitats. Lichen-habitat interactions were species specific, and closely related to insolation and moisture availability. The bidirectional relationships between rock weathering and lichen colonisation was ascertained. Results showed that lichens are good indicators of landform heterogeneity, but also promote landform heterogeneity. Given the habitat preferences of specific lichen species, they provide proxy to evaluating environmental responses, especially environmental change. The findings of this research are to be used as baseline data for future studies exploring ecosystem development in emerging landforms.

Browsing as a demographic bottleneck in a semi-arid savanna: the effect of size and age on compensatory responses of Vachellia karroo seedlings after simulated herbivory

- Description: Savannas are characterised by a continuous grass layer with scattered trees at varying densities. This vegetation structure is determined by several interacting factors, including fire, herbivory, resource competition and atmospheric CO2 concentration. The preservation of savanna biomes is important and a shift towards a woody biome threatens savanna globally. Bush encroachment which describes the shift towards domination of savannas by C3 woody plants, is especially acute in southern Africa. In semi-arid rangelands, encroachment progresses to dense thickets dominated by thorny and unpalatable bushes and trees. There is evidence that bush encroachment is driven by a reduction in fire and browsing events as well as their interaction. Despite browsing having strong effects on African savannas its isolated role in maintaining tree-grass coexistence has not received as much attention as the role of fire. Therefore the overall aim of this study was to examine the effects of browsing on seedlings of a commonly encroaching species, Vachellia karroo. Browsing was hypothesized to be a demographic release bottleneck for bush encroachment in a semiarid (MAP ~550mm) savanna in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where fire has been historically rare. In a single study I explored the fate of V. karroo seedlings (less than a year old) following browsing in sub canopy and inter canopy microhabitats. Additionally, I explored how the fate of a seedling changed under high and low tree cover. Firstly, I investigated the type, intensity and frequency of herbivory, from both small and large herbivores, which seedlings were subjected to. Results revealed that browsing was severe and frequent with the majority of seedlings browsed more than twice over a 12 month period. Large browsers such as kudu and impala caused high seedling mortality (46%) while smaller browsers such as invertebrates were more effective at suppressing growth. Microhabitat had little impact on seedling survival, but significantly influenced plant compensatory growth. Reduced seedling growth following browsing was observed in the sub-canopy in comparison to seedling growth in full sunlight in the intercanopy, suggesting V.karroo may be shade intolerant. Secondly, the effect of tree cover on browsed seedlings was determined by quantifying browsing frequency and intensity at high and low tree cover. No differences in browsing intensity and frequency were observed between high and low tree cover. However, high tree cover due to bush encroachment limited seedling above ground growth. The aim of the second study was to investigate how V.karroo survival and growth were influenced by its age and size following simulated browsing. I explored this aim through field and greenhouse experiments. I was particularly interested in testing how plant sensitivity to varying defoliation intensities of repeated browsing varied with plant age (known ages of 6, 12, 16 and 30 weeks). There were large differences in mortality between the different age groups. Furthermore, age interacted with repeated browsing and negatively influenced seedling survival and regrowth. Older seedlings (16 and 30 week old) had greater survival and higher browsing frequencies resulted in greater mortality and reduced growth. The threshold age after which seedlings become more tolerant to herbivory occurs at an age of 28 weeks. Seedlings less than six weeks old experiencing intense (100 % defoliation)browsing had a very low probability (33%) of survival following just a single defoliation. Interestingly, all 16 week old seedlings regrew most of their foliage following a moderate (50%) defoliation with some plants overcompensating for leaf loss. The field study revealed two distinct demographic stages based on age and size (seedlings< 9 mm and saplings >9 mm in stem basal diameter (SBD)). Browsing had a strong negative effect on seedlings, resulting in reduced investment in leaf biomass. These findings suggest plant size and age can be used as robust predictors of a plants vulnerability to browsing. An increase in tree cover requires successful transitions of seedlings to saplings (also known as release). The results of this study suggest that in semi-arid savannas, browsing can impact tree cover through imposing a release bottleneck for tree seedlings and to lesser extent saplings. By limiting tree growth plants are kept in a disturbance trap and will therefore be exposed to not only browsers but fire. These findings also have important implications for tree-grass coexistence dynamics, suggesting that specific size and browsing thresholds should be considered in savanna management.

Characterisation of antibacterial compounds produced by Pseudomonas spp. isolated from Hogsback wetlands, Eastern Cape, South Africa

- Description: With microbial pathogens developing resistance against currently existing antimicrobials, there is an earnest need to discover and develop new therapeutic compounds with unique and/or precise modes of action. Natural products have provided the inspiration for most of the active ingredients in medicines and thus are regarded as a potential screening resource lead for discovery of new drugs. Pseudomonads are ubiquitous, Gram-negative, motile bacteria that flourish and inhabit a diversity of environments. Literature has vastly revealed that some members of the genus Pseudomonas are capable of producing a plethora of biologically active metabolites and thus are regarded as “attractive” bacteria for testing as potential sources for new therapeutic compounds. In this regard, this study was undertaken with an aim to isolate and characterize antibacterial compounds produced by Pseudomonas species isolated from aquatic milieu of the Hogsback wetlands, Eastern Cape, South Africa. A total of 12 water samples were aseptically collected from Hogsback wetlands. To ascertain antimicrobial potential of the isolates, 9 test bacterial (sensitive) strains, namely Escherichia coli ATCC 3695, Vibrio fluvialis, Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella enteritidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Escherichia coli (2), Listeria ivanovii, Listeria monocytogenes and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 19433 were used for antimicrobial screening. A total of 500 presumptive Pseudomonas spp. were isolated and screened for the production of antibacterial compound through the Agar-well diffusion method. About 8percent of the presumptive Pseudomonas spp. produced compound with activity against the test bacteria and based on the levels of activity shown, three isolates coded as A53, Y55 and Y138 were selected and identified by 16S rDNA sequence analysis and The Basic Local Alignment Search Tool analysis revealed that the three isolates (A53, Y55 and Y138) belonged to the Pseudomonas genus. Using MEGA6 software, a molecular phylogenetic tree was constructed by Maximum Likelihood Method. The phylogenetic analysis by this method showed that all three isolate codes (A53, Y55 and Y138) formed the same clade with Pseudomonas viridiflava strain P3 (Accession number: AY972186) and Pseudomonas plecoglossicida strain P9 (Accession number: AY972231) at a high bootstrap value of 100percent. Isolate code A53 and Y55 also grouped together at a bootstrap value of 96percent. Factors affecting antibacterial compound production by the three isolates were elucidated. The effect of pH on the three isolates revealed that isolate code A53 and Y55 could produce antibacterial compounds over all pH ranges (pH 4-9), however, antibacterial production was produced optimally at acidic conditions (pH 4) and a less acidic-neutral condition (pH 6) respectively. Isolate Y138 showed optimal production at pH 5. The effect of temperature on all three isolates was studied at different temperatures ranging between 25°C-40°C. Study on effect of temperature variations on antibacterial production revealed that all three isolates are capable of growing and producing antibacterial compounds over all the different temperature ranges, however, maximum/optimum production was observed at temperature of 30°C. In order to establish the role of plasmids in antibacterial production, two curing agents; Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and Ethidium bromide under different sub-lethal concentrations (1 mg/ml -11mg/ml and 2.5 μg/ml- 125 μg/ml respectively) were used to cure the selected isolates. Plasmid DNA samples of A53, Y55 and Y138, were separated by electrophoresis on a 0.7percent (w/v) agarose. Agarose gel electrophoresis revealed that not all the concentrations used were effective in curing the plasmid. A Quick Load 1 kb Extend DNA ladder marker was used for determining the size of the plasmids. Isolate code A53 and Y138 had a plasmid size of 48.5 kb while isolate Y55 had a plasmid size of approximately 20 kb. Antibacterial activity by agar-well diffusion method after the curing process revealed that antibacterial production was not lost or prevented, but rather increased. Thus, it is suggested that the genes responsible for antibiotic production in this study were chromosomal-encoded and not plasmid-encoded. This study revealed that Hogsback wetlands may represent a previously unexplored environment/source of discovering novel and potent antibacterial compounds.

The current study investigated the following: a) comparison of maize biochars derived from the drum and pit kiln pyrolytic systems as soil amendments; b) effects of maize biochars on soil acidity and extractable nutrients of three arable soil types of the EC Province; c) effects of maize biochars on early maize growth and nutrient uptake; d) effect of maize biochars on the effectiveness of organic and inorganic fertilizers for improved soil quality and maize growth. Maize biochars were produced from two pyrolytic systems namely the pit and drum kiln, each maize biochar type was analyzed with respect to its chemical and physical characteristics to investigate its potential as a soil amendment. Both pyrolytic systems were monitored to identify optimum pyrolytic temperatures reached by each process. Observed peak pyrolytic temperature were 300 °C and 500 °C for the pit and drum pyrolytic systems respectively. Both maize biochar types were alkaline in nature with pH values of 8.36 (H2O) and 7.45 (KCl) and 8.95 (H2O) and 7.82 (KCl) for pit and drum biochar respectively. Electrical conductivity (Ec) of drum biochar was 199 mS /m and that of pit biochar 186 mS /m. Generally, there were no differences in the chemical compositions of the two biochar types. However, in most analysis drum biochar gave higher values in nutrient composition compared to the pit biochar. Moreover, according to SEM analysis both biochar materials consisted of an increase in pore size distribution compared to the original feedstock material. In addition, an increase in nutrient composition in the two biochar types compared to the original feedstock was also observed. In an incubation experiment, potential effects of the two maize biochar types derived from the pit and drum kiln pyrolytic systems on soil acidity and nutrients were investigated on three arable soil types of the EC Province. The glasshouse experiment consisted of two cycles, each with a six week period of monitoring maize seedling growth development. Generally, a significant increase in maize growth parameters such as plant height, stem girth, number of leaves and leaf area increased after biochar additions compared to the control. Both biochars significantly improved maize seedling growth at an application rate of 200 kg C/haHowever, the two biochar types displayed varying impacts on maize growth due to influence of soil type and biochar application rates. Nutrient- uptake of Ca, P, Na and Mg showed to improve at an application rate of 200 kg C/ha for both biochar types showing a 50 percent increase compared to the control. Nutrient- uptake patterns for P, Ca, Mg and Na differed across all soil types, mainly due to changes in pH and Na levels which were influenced by increased biochar concentrations resulting in nutrient deficiency. Another glasshouse experiment aimed at investigating the effects on the two maize biochar types on influencing the effectiveness of both organic and inorganic fertilizers for improved early maize growth and soil productivity. Biochar was applied at an application rate of 400 kg C/ha of biochar, fertilizer was applied at application rates of 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 kg N/ha and manure at 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 t/ha respectively. The glasshouse experiment consisted of two cycles, each with a six week period of monitoring maize seedling growth development. In the 1st cycle, manure rate of 40 t/ha resulted in the highest plant height of maize seedlings grown in the glasshouse, biochar type also showed to influence plant height. After the 1st harvest Mg, K and P levels improved at 30 t/ha, Na at 20 t/ha and Ca 40 t/ha of manure. Plant height and stem girth improved at 30 kg N/ha of fertilizer, however, nutrient levels for Ca, K and Mg decreased after the 1st harvest, while Na levels increased. Nutrient uptake was the highest for Mg and Na at 40 kg N/ha while for Ca at 30 kg N/ha of fertilizer. During the 2nd cycle plant height was the highest at 30 t/ha of manure, and effect of manure rate was significant (p<0.05) for number of leaves, plant height and biomass. Whereas, manure rate and biochar type effect were insignificant (p>0.05) for pH, Ec and nutrient uptake changes. Maize seedling showed significant response to fertilizer 40 kg N/ha for most of the growth parameters measured (P<0.05), except for germination percentage. All treatments investigated had no effect on germination percentage. The two biochar types showed significant (p<0.05) effects on soil pH and Ec. Drum biochar was slightly better performing than pit biochar. Results obtained from the various studies suggests that maize biochars derived from the pit and drum pyrolytic systems are potential soil amendments in correcting soil acidity and nutrient deficiency in the EC Province. Both biochar types have shown abilities to improve early maize growth and effectiveness of fertilizers in maize based systems of the EC Province. However, some variations in soil fertility and early maize growth were observed as a result of the soil type response towards the two biochar applications. This could also have risen as a result of a number of factors such as the nutritional composition of biochar material, initial soil type chemical composition, biochar and fertilizer application rates and time taken or period to complete each study. Therefore, further experiments should be conducted to validate these results, preferable having longer periods of study, moreover, field experiments. In addition, investigations on potential feedstock materials such as animal wastes used as biochar in the EC Province can be conducted.

- Description: Population density may exert changes in a variety of behavioural and physiological characters in animals. However, the effects of density-dependence and dispersal are poorly studied in subterranean rodents due to the difficulties involved in observing such effects in wild populations. Using the cooperative breeding Damaraland mole-rat (Fukomys damarensis) as a model species, the effects of population density on body size, growth rates, group size, recruitment, philopatry and dispersal were investigated at two sites (one with low density and one with high density) in the Northern Cape of South Africa. Group size, litter size and the probability of recapture were independent of population density. However, individual body size, recruitment, dispersal rate and dispersal distance were density-dependent. Individuals were significantly larger, juveniles exhibited a significantly higher growth rate, and juvenile recruitment was significantly greater when population density was low. At higher densities, significantly more individuals were lost between capture events which may be indicative of increased rates of dispersal. Mean dispersal distances in mole-rats were reduced at higher densities and increased at lower densities. While both sexes dispersed equally, males were significantly more likely to join an established colony and females created new burrow systems. In addition, four times as many single females were found when population density was low. The apparent differences in the study populations may be attributed to variable annual rainfall or food availability. The greater annual rainfall at the high-density site may provide better habitat conditions and therefore result in an increase in the population density and an increased dispersal rate due to the relaxed ecological constraints such as reduced energetic costs to burrowing. However, the larger body size found at the low-density site may indicate that the available food at that location is of better quality. This study revealed that mole-rats were able to disperse over 1km and therefore a much larger study area would be required in capture-mark-recapture studies to ensure the recapture of the majority of dispersers. Lastly, a surprising find of this study was that females may survive a solitary existence for over two years while awaiting the arrival of a mate.

The technology saves time for readers as well as gives them a chance to focus on the contents that matter most. This is one of the research areas in natural language processing/ information retrieval, which the dissertation tries to contribute to. It tries to contextualize tools and technologies that are developed for other languages to automatically summarize textual Xhosa news articles. Specifically, the dissertation aims at developing a text summarizer for textual Xhosa news articles based on the extraction methods. In doing so, it examines the literature and understand the techniques and technologies used to analyse contents of a written text, transform and synthesize it, the phonology and morphology of the Xhosa language, and finally, designs, implements and test an extraction-based automatic news article for the Xhosa language. Given comprehension and relevance of the literature review, the research design, the methods and tools and technologies used to design, implement and test the pilot system. Two approaches were used to extract relevant sentences, which are, term frequency and sentence position. The Xhosa summarizer is evaluated using a test set. This study has employed both subjective and objective evaluation methods. The results of both methods are satisfactory. Differential regulation of wheat (Triticum aestivum) callose synthases during Russian wheat aphid (diuraphis noxia)infestation

- Description: Plant production serves as the primary food source for all living beings and is continuously being affected by many biotic and abiotic factors. Wheat, one of the most consumed cereal crops in the world and the second most cultivated crop after maize in South Africa, is continuously being affected by Russian wheat aphid (RWA) since 1978. To counteract the effect of this aphid, the first resistant wheat cultivar was developed in 1984 in South Africa containing the Dn1 resistance gene. However, the mechanism of action of the resistance is still not fully understood to date. The feeding of the RWA on the wheat induces callose deposition especially in susceptible wheat cultivars, linking the β-1.3-polysaccharide (callose) to the resistance mechanism. Callose is synthesized by callose synthases, also known as glucan synthase-like genes (GSL). Not much is known about the mechanism of action of callose synthases or how they are regulated in response to the RWA. Bioinformatics tools, such as those available at NCBI, were used to identify the wheat callose synthases genes. The proteins encoded by the identified wheat callose synthases genes, were then analyzed for conserved domain motifs using the MEME suite and InterproScan, sequence similarities using ClustaL Omega and transmembrane domains using HMMTOP and ProtCamp. These were then compared with those of the already characterized Arabidopsis callose synthase proteins in an attempt to identify the wheat callose synthase(s) that responds to aphid feeding. Further bioinformatics studies were carried out to identify the presence of biotic stress associated cis-acting regulatory elements found in the 1.5 kbp upstream region of the start codon of the Arabidopsis callose synthase genes. Eight partial wheat callose synthase sequences were identified and two of these (TaGSL2 and TaGSL22) showed high similarities to the AtGSL5, which is up-regulated in response to aphid feeding in Arabidopsis. Six of the wheat callose synthase genes were mediated to code for the functional callose synthases proteins: TaGSL3, 8, 12, 19, 22 and 23, and analyzed for conserved protein motifs. Based on the sequence similarities and conserved protein domains, TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 were found to be the most similar to AtGSL5 and most likely to respond to RWA infestation. Cis-acting regulatory element analyses confirmed the possibility of TaGSL22 being responsible for callose deposition in wheat as biotic stress associated cis-acting regulatory elements, Box W1, TC- rich element and W- box were all found in the 1.5 kbp upstream of the TaGSL22 coding region. Callose was quantified in both susceptible and resistant wheat cultivars using the aniline blue fluorescence method. When infested with RWA-SA1, the susceptible wheat cultivar (Tugela) deposited significantly higher amounts of callose, compared to the resistant wheat cultivar (Tugela DN), which deposited little, to no callose with respect to the control samples. Transcription analysis, of the TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 in RWA-SA2 infested Tugela and Tugela DN wheat cultivars, was performed using real time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Both TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 genes were up-regulated in Tugela and Tugela DN wheat cultivars in response to RWA-SA2 infestation, with TaGSL22 being more expressed than TaGSL2 in both cultivars, indicating that RWA-SA2 is able to overcome the resistance of Tugela DN and cause callose deposition. However, significantly higher expression of both genes was still observed in the susceptible, Tugela wheat cultivar. This study therefore confirms that callose deposition is associated with RWA-SA1 feeding, only in the susceptible wheat cultivar, Tugela and not the resistant cultivar, Tugela DN. However, during RWA-SA2 feeding, two of the eight identified callose synthases in wheat, are up-regulated in response to RWA-SA2 feeding, in both the resistant and susceptible wheat cultivars with higher levels observed in the susceptible wheat cultivar when compared to the resistant wheat cultivar. TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 are therefore implicated in the callose deposition observed in the susceptible and resistant wheat cultivars, after RWA-SA2 infestation. Further studies are required to confirm the differential regulation of the two wheat callose synthases proteins during RWA infestation and their possible role in the resistance mechanism of the resistant wheat cultivar, Tugela DN.

These were then compared with those of the already characterized Arabidopsis callose synthase proteins in an attempt to identify the wheat callose synthase(s) that responds to aphid feeding. Further bioinformatics studies were carried out to identify the presence of biotic stress associated cis-acting regulatory elements found in the 1.5 kbp upstream region of the start codon of the Arabidopsis callose synthase genes. Eight partial wheat callose synthase sequences were identified and two of these (TaGSL2 and TaGSL22) showed high similarities to the AtGSL5, which is up-regulated in response to aphid feeding in Arabidopsis. Six of the wheat callose synthase genes were mediated to code for the functional callose synthases proteins: TaGSL3, 8, 12, 19, 22 and 23, and analyzed for conserved protein motifs. Based on the sequence similarities and conserved protein domains, TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 were found to be the most similar to AtGSL5 and most likely to respond to RWA infestation. Cis-acting regulatory element analyses confirmed the possibility of TaGSL22 being responsible for callose deposition in wheat as biotic stress associated cis-acting regulatory elements, Box W1, TC- rich element and W- box were all found in the 1.5 kbp upstream of the TaGSL22 coding region. Callose was quantified in both susceptible and resistant wheat cultivars using the aniline blue fluorescence method. When infested with RWA-SA1, the susceptible wheat cultivar (Tugela) deposited significantly higher amounts of callose, compared to the resistant wheat cultivar (Tugela DN), which deposited little, to no callose with respect to the control samples. Transcription analysis, of the TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 in RWA-SA2 infested Tugela and Tugela DN wheat cultivars, was performed using real time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Both TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 genes were up-regulated in Tugela and Tugela DN wheat cultivars in response to RWA-SA2 infestation, with TaGSL22 being more expressed than TaGSL2 in both cultivars, indicating that RWA-SA2 is able to overcome the resistance of Tugela DN and cause callose deposition. However, significantly higher expression of both genes was still observed in the susceptible, Tugela wheat cultivar. This study therefore confirms that callose deposition is associated with RWA-SA1 feeding, only in the susceptible wheat cultivar, Tugela and not the resistant cultivar, Tugela DN. However, during RWA-SA2 feeding, two of the eight identified callose synthases in wheat, are up-regulated in response to RWA-SA2 feeding, in both the resistant and susceptible wheat cultivars with higher levels observed in the susceptible wheat cultivar when compared to the resistant wheat cultivar. TaGSL2 and TaGSL22 are therefore implicated in the callose deposition observed in the susceptible and resistant wheat cultivars, after RWA-SA2 infestation. Further studies are required to confirm the differential regulation of the two wheat callose synthases proteins during RWA infestation and their possible role in the resistance mechanism of the resistant wheat cultivar, Tugela DN.

During 2010 the addition of the Colchester section effectively doubled the area (120 km2 to 230 km2) available to elephant, presumably releasing browsing intensity in the Addo Main Camp section, hence allowing for the regeneration (through growth and resprouting) of the vulnerable canopy shrubs (a key functional guild). I aim to test this hypothesis. I use space use data from before and after expansion to track the distribution of elephant utilization across the park. Additionally, I use data collected between 2008 and 2015 on shrub composition and structure and the structure of individual canopy species, to illustrate the long-term trends in elephant impact. I firstly show that although elephants shift a proportion of their utilization distribution into novel habitat, they continue to show a strong preference for the Addo Main Camp section, with its higher water availability yet heavier utilized vegetation. I also illustrate that within 5 years of the expansion, effects on the canopy shrub community declined, presumably by spreading impacts to novel areas. Specifically, I show that vegetation composition and structure (volume and density) remained stable during this period. While these results indicate that range expansion might be a viable tool to mitigate the impact of elephant on vegetation composition and structure, at least in the short-term, the consequences for ecological functioning remain to be measured. In the long-term, I predict that attempts to use range expansion as a management tool may fail if implemented without limiting population numbers and controlling the distribution of local densities (e.g. by managing surface water availability).

Evaluating the importance of mangroves as fish nurseries in selected warm temperate South African estuaries

Early stage fishes were sampled using boat-based plankton towing while juveniles were sampled by seine netting. Sampling took place at five sites spaced 1 km apart starting near the estuary mouth in four estuaries along the temperate coastline of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Four estuaries were selected based on shared similarities which included catchment area, estuarine area and shared habitats barring the presence of mangroves which occupied the river margins of two systems. Results revealed that early stage and juvenile fish communities (both marine- and estuary-spawned) were similar between systems with and without mangrove habitats. Differences in fish communities among estuaries were rather attributed to axial salinity gradients associated with greater freshwater input, while season and temperature produced significant variances in fish densities with Generalised Additive Models revealing responses of communities to these variables. A common estuarine-dependent fish, Rhabdosargus holubi (Family Sparidae), was further investigated to determine habitat use, residency and dietary patterns in different mangrove habitats. High habitat residency in this species was revealed during a short-term tagging study using Visible Implant Elastomer tags and long-term isotope analysis in juveniles sampled from two contrasting mangrove habitats. A wider feeding niche was observed in an eelgrass-red mangrove connected habitat when compared with more exposed white mangrove areas. Low dependence on mangrove habitats in temperate estuaries is likely due to their tidally dominated inundation and limited refuge potential due to smaller area coverage by mangroves in temperate estuaries. Relatively lower primary productivity in warm temperate mangrove areas, relative to their tropical counterparts, provides no significant feeding advantage or refuge opportunities relative to other available habitats in these estuaries. Warm temperate estuaries, which are both spatially and temporally highly variable, instead host species which are habitat generalists, able to capitalise on these highly dynamic environments.

- Description: Geological and geophysical methods were used to investigate the Karoo area extending from longitudes 25.50 E to 27.50 E and latitudes 300 S to 330 S in South Africa, particularly Fort Beaufort, Aliwal North, Venterstad and Smithfield. The geology of the area is dominated by the upper Beaufort Group (Adelaide Subgroup) with an extensive network of dolerite sills and dykes that intruded the sedimentary sequence. A relationship between neotectonics, post-Karoo tectonics, groundwater and lithology was investigated to locate suitable groundwater potential sites. Apart from studying the role of neotectonics and the post Karoo tectonics, this research aims at generating groundwater targets to alleviate water shortages mainly for farming and livestock, and prove that neotectonics is still active. Methodologies adopted for obtaining these results included a comprehensive literature review, thin section analysis, scanning electron microscopy, geophysical investigation (magnetic, gravity, and vertical electrical sounding), and the application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing. Twenty samples were collected at various locations within the study area and were analyzed using the petrographic microscope while others were analyzed with the Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) combined with an Energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry. The results show that the rocks are fractured, porous and have variable mineralogy (presence of heavy minerals) within the rocks. The use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing in geological surveys, especially hydrogeology, has gained momentum over the past few years. This research is no exception as ArcMap software was used to create a map of seismic epicentres of the Eastern Cape Province. From the map it can be observed that seismicity still occurs and thus leading to the notion of neotectonics being active. Lineaments were also automatically extracted using the ENVI 5.1 and Geomatica 2013 software. Lineaments are zones of weakness in the subsurface of the Earth and are very important in locating groundwater potential sites. Geophysical techniques are essential and highly accurate for groundwater studies. Gravity and magnetic techniques were applied on data which was supplied as grids. Analysis using Geosoft Oasis 8.3 revealed extensive lineaments and ring like patterns and these were inferred to be dolerite intrusions (sills and dykes). The morphology of the intrusions help in identifying possible groundwater potential zones and thus they should be investigated. Vertical electrical sounding (VES) technique using the Schlumberger array was carried out at three sites (Fort Beaufort fracture which is possibly related to Quaternary surface uplift of the Amatole-Swaziland axis, splay of the Fort Beaufort fracture and at a site which showed high groundwater potential) to explore subsurface layering. IP2win (lite), 1-D modelling software was used to model the apparent resistivity data to obtain the geoelectric parameters of the subsurface (thickness and resistivity). The VES results are consistent with fractured rocks that aid groundwater movement. The VES data for the three sites was further modelled by the RES2DINV software and this shows low resistivity values associated with loose, water saturated top sandy soil and higher resistivity values associated with sedimentary sequences and dolerite. Moreover, potential sites for citing wells are predicted to be between 79.5 and 128 m on the profile. Further neotectonic studies need to be done, especially on the quaternary sediments as they would have more neotectonic evidence. The use of geophysical techniques for groundwater search need to be intensified, with more emphasis being put to the sedimentary sequences bordered by dolerite intrusions and fractured zones.

Evolution of Fe-Ti-V oxides from the main magnetite layer, Upper Zone, Bushveld Complex, South Africa: a comparison across the Western, Northern and Eastern Lobes

- Description: The Main Magnetite Layer (MML) from the Northern, Eastern and Western lobes of the Bushveld Complex shows significant differences in textures and in mineral chemistry. The MML in the Eastern and Western lobes is massive, with rare, small and altered pyroxene inclusions. By contrast, the MML in the Northern Lobe is more heterogeneous, and it is made of anastomosed and sometimes imbricated, thin layers of magnetitite, magnetite-rich and silicate-rich rocks, where the inclusions in Ti-magnetite are more numerous and consist of mainly altered subhedral and anhedral plagioclase. The comparison of the maximum values of the oxides shows that the MML in the Northern Lobe has the highest content of V2O3 (1.97 wt%), TiO2 (22.49 wt%) and MgO (2.92 wt%), while the MML in the Eastern Lobe has the highest content of Cr2O3 (2.92 wt%) and Al2O3 (9.80 wt%), but lowest V2O3 (0.52 wt%). The lower TiO2 content and higher V2O3 content in the MML of the Northern and Western Lobes suggest lower oxidising conditions during the crystallization of oxides. The MML in all three studied lobes consists of two layers of magnetitite, suggesting that MML was formed by two separate magma influxes, probably on a diverse and complex type of magma chamber floor. The high TiO2 content in magnetite, together with the negative correlation between TiO2 and V2O3 suggest that the maximum V content should represent a “less evolved” and less oxidized melt. In this respect, higher concentrations V2O3 in magnetite can be expected in magnetitite layers with lower TiO2. It can be inferred that the Ti-magetite in the MML from the Eastern Lobe was formed from a more evolved (TiO2 and FeO enriched) and more oxidized (lower V2O3) melt, compared with the MML from the Northern and Western lobes. These findings can be used to illustrate: a) that high fO2 can be responsible for the relatively low V content in magnetite from Fe-Ti oxide ores and b) the vanadium in magnetite decreases significantly in more evolved cumulates, due to a decreasing fO2 with differentiation. Compositional profiles of Ti- magnetite along the stratigraphic height of the MML in the Eastern Lobe (composed of two layers, separated in the outcrop by a parting plane) depicts a cryptic variation with depth in each of the two layers, where each layer can be divided into four sublayers, labelled upwards as A, B, C (with C1, C2, C3 and C4) and D based on Cr, Mg, Ti, Al and V variation. Small scale reversals of the mentioned elements and the repetition of A, B, C and D sub-layers in each layer suggest that MML formed from two successive influxes of magma (indicated by relatively elevated values of MgO), which evolved by crystallization and cooling in a similar manner, to produce the A to D variation. Based on these observations and theoretical considerations, this study dismisses several models for the genesis of the MML: the immiscibility, the increased oxygen fugacity, the relative increase of H2O content of the melt, pressure variation within the magma chamber, magma mixing, and crustal rock contamination. The model proposed here for MML genesis involves the crystallization of both Ti-magnetite and ilmenite from a Fe-Ti-Ca-Al-rich melt (ferro-diorite) along its line of descent, and gravitational settling of oxides in a dynamic regime. The factor which triggered the crystallization of magnetite is a critical saturation of melt in magnetite (attaining saturation of magnetite and ilmenite in the melt after some silicates crystallized). The difference between the nature of silicate inclusions in magnetite and the nature of the magnetite floor, suggest that the Fe-rich magma was not in equilibrium with the cumulates from the present floor, but rather it was emplaced laterally on long distances, the melt being disrupted from its own cumulates. The absence of correlation between the Cr2O3 in magnetite and co-existing ilmenite can indicate than no in-situ fractional crystallization took place at the moment of magnetite accumulation, but rather that magnetite and ilmenite gravitationally accumulated and the grains mechanically mixed from a flowing magma. The oxides started crystallizing in a dynamic regime, as in Stage 1. In stage 5, the accumulation of oxides produced the upper layer of the MML. Our interpretation is that the flow of the magma was more dynamic (probably more turbulent on long distances) in the MML of the Northern Lobe, compared to the MML in the Western and Eastern lobes, producing highly heterogeneous and imbricated thin layers of magnetitite and silicates. The presence of olivine corona around orthopyroxene suggests the incongruent melting of orthopyroxene, which points out towards a local re-heating of existing silicate layers, this being a strong argument for multiple injections in generation of MML. Massive crystallization of oxides produced the sulphur saturation of the magma and caused the precipitation of the igneous sulphides, which nucleated on the existing oxides. Later hydrothermal fluids (and/or late magmatic volatiles?) percolated the MML, producing chloritization of the included silicates, remobilization of igneous sulphides and precipitation of hydrothermal sulphides.

- Description: The Main Magnetite Layer (MML) from the Northern, Eastern and Western lobes of the Bushveld Complex shows significant differences in textures and in mineral chemistry. The MML in the Eastern and Western lobes is massive, with rare, small and altered pyroxene inclusions. By contrast, the MML in the Northern Lobe is more heterogeneous, and it is made of anastomosed and sometimes imbricated, thin layers of magnetitite, magnetite-rich and silicate-rich rocks, where the inclusions in Ti-magnetite are more numerous and consist of mainly altered subhedral and anhedral plagioclase. The comparison of the maximum values of the oxides shows that the MML in the Northern Lobe has the highest content of V2O3 (1.97 wt%), TiO2 (22.49 wt%) and MgO (2.92 wt%), while the MML in the Eastern Lobe has the highest content of Cr2O3 (2.92 wt%) and Al2O3 (9.80 wt%), but lowest V2O3 (0.52 wt%). The lower TiO2 content and higher V2O3 content in the MML of the Northern and Western Lobes suggest lower oxidising conditions during the crystallization of oxides. The MML in all three studied lobes consists of two layers of magnetitite, suggesting that MML was formed by two separate magma influxes, probably on a diverse and complex type of magma chamber floor. The high TiO2 content in magnetite, together with the negative correlation between TiO2 and V2O3 suggest that the maximum V content should represent a “less evolved” and less oxidized melt. In this respect, higher concentrations V2O3 in magnetite can be expected in magnetitite layers with lower TiO2. It can be inferred that the Ti-magetite in the MML from the Eastern Lobe was formed from a more evolved (TiO2 and FeO enriched) and more oxidized (lower V2O3) melt, compared with the MML from the Northern and Western lobes. These findings can be used to illustrate: a) that high fO2 can be responsible for the relatively low V content in magnetite from Fe-Ti oxide ores and b) the vanadium in magnetite decreases significantly in more evolved cumulates, due to a decreasing fO2 with differentiation. Compositional profiles of Ti- magnetite along the stratigraphic height of the MML in the Eastern Lobe (composed of two layers, separated in the outcrop by a parting plane) depicts a cryptic variation with depth in each of the two layers, where each layer can be divided into four sublayers, labelled upwards as A, B, C (with C1, C2, C3 and C4) and D based on Cr, Mg, Ti, Al and V variation. Small scale reversals of the mentioned elements and the repetition of A, B, C and D sub-layers in each layer suggest that MML formed from two successive influxes of magma (indicated by relatively elevated values of MgO), which evolved by crystallization and cooling in a similar manner, to produce the A to D variation. Based on these observations and theoretical considerations, this study dismisses several models for the genesis of the MML: the immiscibility, the increased oxygen fugacity, the relative increase of H2O content of the melt, pressure variation within the magma chamber, magma mixing, and crustal rock contamination. Exploring feeding ecology and population growth rate responses of ungulates in Southern African arid biomes

Understanding how these stressors influence ungulate feeding ecology and population growth rates is important for managers, as these could influence the persistence of ungulates in protected areas. An understanding of these stressors is especially relevant given the significant population declines in ungulate species globally. The Nama Karoo biome and the arid Savanna, an arid form of the Savanna biome, are both arid, but have distinct rainfall seasonality and vegetation structure and represent unique characteristics that need to be properly considered in their own regard. The literature on African ungulate feeding ecology covers a range of species and biomes from southern and east Africa, however, very little is known about ungulate dietary preferences in the Nama Karoo. Unexplained population declines in springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) and red hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus caama) have occurred at local scales across the Nama Karoo and the arid Savanna, most notably springbok population declines at the Karoo National Park (Karoo NP). This study sought to improve the understanding of ungulate feeding ecology and population growth rate responses in two arid biomes of South Africa. To achieve this, ungulate dietary composition was characterised, in terms of the proportional seasonal contribution of C4 and C3 plant forms, of a range of ungulates in the Nama Karoo, at the Karoo NP and the arid Savanna, at the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve (Tswalu KR), using stable carbon isotope analysis. Fresh faecal samples of ungulate species were collected from both the biomes during the dry, early wet and late wet seasons. Species were categorised per biome into feeding guilds and the effects of season, biome and the interaction thereof on the diets of the ungulate species explored. Furthermore, the findings were interpreted against what is known about diets of the respective species elsewhere in southern and east Africa. Secondly, trends in ungulate population growth rates were assessed within the Karoo NP and the Tswalu KR over the past 12 and14 years respectively. Furthermore, the variables influencing ungulate population growth rates (and generality of trends), with emphasis on ungulate biomass and rainfall, were explored at biome and species level. Population size data were obtained from annual aerial censuses for the period 2002-2015 and used to calculate annual growth rates and biomass for each ungulate species. The contribution of C4 forage to the diets of ungulate species in the arid Savanna was generally higher than in the Nama Karoo,in line with greater relative abundance of C4 grasses in the former. During winter (dry season) C3 intake was higher in the Nama Karoo than in the arid Savanna, reflecting C3 plant growth (C3 grasses and shrubs) and rainfall during winter in the Nama Karoo. Mean population growth rates during the study period were negative in some of the threatened species considered, i.e. mountain reedbuck (Redunca fulvorufula fulvorufula), tsessebe (Damaliscus lunatus lunatus) and Hartmann’s mountain zebra (Equus zebra hartmannae). No evidence for negative density dependent regulation (~intra-/interspecific competition) of ungulate population growth rates was found, whereas bottom up (~rainfall) and positive density dependent (~biomass of the species under investigation) regulatory mechanisms were most influential. The rainfall and biomass variables influenced the population growth rates of smaller ungulate species more than those of larger bodied ungulate species. Knowledge of ungulate diets will enable managers of protected areas to better understand how climate change, and resultant changes in relative abundances of plant growth forms, will influence specific ungulate species. The finding that increased population biomass positively influenced certain ungulate species’ growth rates has potential implications for management intervention as ungulate biomass is a variable that can be manipulated in protected areas. The reinforcement of existing mountain reedbuck, springbok and red hartebeest populations, specifically, at the Karoo NP and the Tswalu KR may counter their current negative growth rates in these two protected areas. Finally, the influence of protected area size and fencing, on ungulate vulnerability to predators (~top down) and forage quality (~bottom up) mechanisms in arid biomes needs to be further explored.

Foraging behaviour and thermal physiology of Cape sugarbirds: sex-specific responses to temperature

Sexual dimorphism in Mb is common across many species, but its physiological consequences (e.g. energy and water demands) remain poorly understood. In this study, I determined if the sexually dimorphic Cape Sugarbird (Promerops cafer)–males are up to 15% larger than females, show sex-specific foraging patterns and physiological responses. To determine intraspecific variability behavioural in response to temperature, I compared flower visitation rates between male and female Cape Sugarbirds at different times of the day, and among days that varied in maximum air temperature. A total of 1207 males and 561 females were observed. Female Cape Sugarbirds visited flowers more often and continued to feed especially on hot days. Males generally dominated flower resources throughout the day, except on hot days. I also compared physiological responses in EWL, RMR and Tb between males and females at high air temperatures. There were no significant differences between the two sexes. Aggression which was overlooked appeared to have a high influence on foraging behaviour of Cape Sugarbirds. These results suggest that female Cape Sugarbirds will be more prone to energy and water stress during hot and dry summers in the Fynbos region because of resource dominance by male Cape Sugarbirds. Endemic birds, such as the Cape Sugarbird, warrant a conservation priority, especially since they are the dominant pollinator of the Protea plants in the Fynbos biome. The findings of this study will provide insights into population persistence of Cape Sugarbirds in response to predicted heat waves and rise in global temperatures.

Gypsum deposits associated with the Whitehill Formation (Ecca Group) in the Steytlerville-Jansenville Area, Southern Karoo, South Africa

- Description: The Steyterville-Jansenville gypsum field is one of South Africa’s smaller deposits, yet plays host to several gypsum mines, both past and present. This study aims to deconstruct the processes involved in the precipitation of various quantities and grades of gypsum in the lower Ecca Group of the Karoo Supergroup. The calcium and sulphate ions required to form the gypsum mineral (CaSO4•2H2O) are derived from the mid- to lower-shale of the Whitehill Formation, which is carbonate- and pyrite-rich. Gypsum formation is dependent on the availability of pyrite as opposed to calcite, which is in abundance throughout the 30m thick, Early Ufimian (late Permian) Whitehill Formation. Weathered shale, which has been folded and faulted, forms the host environment in which gypsum has precipitated. Folding of the shale occurs as a series of large- and medium-scale anticlines and synclines that strike east to west. These structures, which formed during the Cape Orogeny indicate that stresses were exerted from the south-southwest towards the north-northeast. Folded calcite veins surrounded by amorphous pyrite, observed in thin section suggest that pyrite and calcite were precipitated together prior to a deformation event. Oxidation of pyrite following these deformation events results in the concentration of sulphides within the hinge zones of the folds (weakest zone) and this is where the larger gypsum deposits are found at the surface. Carbonate concretions in the Whitehill Formation up to 5m in length and 3m in width are common in the study area, and suggest a relationship with the deposition of the shale whereby calcium-rich nuclei grew in a concentric fashion during a non-depositional hiatus period. This period is also associated with a higher concentration of pyrite and could explain the occurrence of concretions together with adjacent gypsum-rich shale. Pyrite framboids observed under the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) provide evidence to suggest concentric growth of initially deposited microcrystals including nucleation and growth of nodules and concretions observed within the Whitehill Formation. Prerequisites for gypsum formation also include restricted drainage such as a pan, a clay layer in the drainage area and an arid climate where evaporation exceeds precipitation. The preferred surface conditions for gypsum formation would be low-lying areas which are surrounded by gently-sloping topography promoting the concentration of aqueous solutions in a calcite- and pyrite-rich area. Groundwater solution would initially dissolve the calcite and clay minerals, and pyrite and the quartz minerals would remain in the host rock. Areas with greater calcite and clay pores would accommodate more groundwater and thus promote a greater surface area for chemical reactions. This enhances the potential for the oxidation of pyrite to form sulphate ions, which can later combine with calcium ions to precipitate gypsum crystals. Alternatively, the oxidation of pyrite, which produces acidity, dissolves the carbonate host and the calcium- and sulphate-rich solution then precipitates gypsum. The combination of the structural and geomorphological processes is key to the formation of economic gypsum deposits. The potential for extensive gypsum reserves within the Steytlerville-Jansenville field remains valid, provided the target is located over a predominantly weathered Whitehill Formation outcrop, preferably in an area which has undergone extensive deformation (such as a fold hinge zone), and is favourable for the concentration of ground and surface water within a low-lying area.

The preferred surface conditions for gypsum formation would be low-lying areas which are surrounded by gently-sloping topography promoting the concentration of aqueous solutions in a calcite- and pyrite-rich area. Groundwater solution would initially dissolve the calcite and clay minerals, and pyrite and the quartz minerals would remain in the host rock. Areas with greater calcite and clay pores would accommodate more groundwater and thus promote a greater surface area for chemical reactions. This enhances the potential for the oxidation of pyrite to form sulphate ions, which can later combine with calcium ions to precipitate gypsum crystals. Alternatively, the oxidation of pyrite, which produces acidity, dissolves the carbonate host and the calcium- and sulphate-rich solution then precipitates gypsum. The combination of the structural and geomorphological processes is key to the formation of economic gypsum deposits. The potential for extensive gypsum reserves within the Steytlerville-Jansenville field remains valid, provided the target is located over a predominantly weathered Whitehill Formation outcrop, preferably in an area which has undergone extensive deformation (such as a fold hinge zone), and is favourable for the concentration of ground and surface water within a low-lying area.
