- Description: Landscape stewardship is considered an important place-based approach to addressing sustainability challenges. Working at landscape-level requires collaboration between diverse landscape stakeholders. In this study, we partnered with local stewardship practitioners across six cases in South Africa to investigate how they facilitate collaboration towards social-ecological sustainability outcomes. We found that practitioners facilitate collaboration among stakeholders by operating as relational hubs in the landscape. Through these hubs, they build new inter-personal relationships among stakeholders, creating social networks which enable stewardship practice. The hubs deepen human-nature relationships by creating enabling conditions for stewards to put stewardship ethics into action. Drawing on insights from these cases, we call for a relational approach to landscape stewardship which focuses on human-to-human and human-to-nature relationships. Moreover, we argue that landscape stewardship initiatives need to re-focus stewardship on stewards, recognizing them as key agents of change in addressing the conflict between agriculture and conservation inherent in many landscapes.

Resisting the ‘Native Informant’ trope in examples of African Diaspora art and literature

It argues that a strong emphasis towards studying diasporic groups in relation to their African origin revives, consequently, the colonial politics that underpin the continent as an unknown mythical place. In response to this issue, I introduce multidisciplinary case studies that highlight various artists and authors who resist and challenge the diasporic individual as the ‘native informant’. Their works reinterpret and redefine the relationship between African communities, their connection to the continent and their experiences of living abroad. Analysing the exhibitions Looking Both Ways, Africa Remix and Flow, I investigate their visual art discourses that interpret diasporic artists and their works as cultural embodiments of their African background. As a result, the three art shows marginalise other potential readings to view diasporic experiences. This thesis introduces three resistant themes that reconceive the diasporic person’s relationship to the African Diaspora based on language, spatial interaction and self-identification opposed to a geographic tie. The first theme (language) references Victor Ekpuk’s drawings and Isidore Okpewho’s novel Call Me By My Rightful Name to suggest a language based diasporic experience. The second theme (spatial interaction) looks at Emeka Ogboh’s sound installations and Teju Cole’s novel Open City. Both works examine a diasporic individual’s conflicted engagement with her place of origin. The third theme (self-identification) considers the individual-community relationship in Wura-Natasha Ogunji’s performance art and Chika Unigwe’s novel On Black Sisters’ Street. Each of these visual-literary pairs focus on various components that shape the African diasporic lifestyle. My research re-interprets the continent’s significance in the diaspora from a geographic construct to a socio-spiritual connection to a community. Firstly, it outlines the persistent issue of a colonial residue in Africa’s definition as a physical-cultural space, and secondly, it offers three alternative discourses to read diasporic identities outside a geographic framework. I argue that belonging is a social individual-collective effort rather than an anchor to a tangible environment.

- Description: Natural rangelands provide a variety of ecosystem services including livestock production which occurs on land under freehold land tenure and on land under communal tenure. There is an ongoing debate around the extent to which land degradation is occurring on these rangelands under different land management and land tenure systems and what the main degradation drivers are. Over-grazing, rainfall and soil type are key drivers of rangeland dynamics and the resultant sediment yield in the river systems, however, over-grazing is an outcome of land management while rainfall and soil type are natural drivers. This study explores the relationship between rainfall and daily sediment flux as well as the seasonal trends of vegetation cover and the study is part of a greater research effort called the Tsitsa Project which is based in the Tsitsa River catchment (near Maclear, Eastern Cape, South Africa). The Tsitsa Project aims at developing and managing both land and water in a sustainable way by improving the land, water and lives of people living in the Tsitsa River catchment. The restoration efforts of the Tstisa Project will aid in extending the lifespan of both the proposed dams on the Tsitsa River. The Tsitsa River catchment is characterised by grasslands, steep topography, highly erodible soils with many large gullies present and a very high sediment yield in the Tsitsa River which allowed for the exploration of some of the system drivers of sediment yield in this catchment. The study involved two sub-catchments of the Upper Tsitsa River catchment of different land management strategies: one dominated by commercial livestock farms (Little Pot River catchment) and one dominated by communal rangelands (Gqukunqa River catchment). The aim of this study was to determine the seasonal trends of rainfall intensity, ground cover and sediment dynamics in the Little Pot River and Gqukunqa River catchments. The purpose of the findings was to improve management strategies in degraded areas and catchments. In order to achieve this aim a variety of field and desktop methods were used. Field methods involved measuring variables including: vegetation biomass, vegetation cover, soil surface hardness, biocrust cover and slope angle for a range of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values from the Sentinel-2A sensor. The study assessed the system response of the field variables in both catchments over one rainfall season (2018-2019). Desktop methods included various NDVI analyses as well as analyses of trends and relationships between vegetation dynamics, rainfall and sediment. The relationship between erosive rainfall events, daily rainfall, antecedent rainfall and daily sediment flux was explored over the time period of January 2016 to January 2019 and October 2015 to January 2019 for the Little Pot River catchment and the Gqukunqa River catchment respectively. NDVI was explored as a proxy for vegetation cover to extrapolate across the catchments and monitoring period. NDVI was found to have a weak positive relationship with vegetation cover and biomass (R2 values ranged from 0,04 to 0,525). Mean monthly catchment NDVI values, biomass and vegetation cover increased throughout the wet season of 2018-2019 in both catchments. Mean monthly NDVI values increased from 0,26 to 0,55 in the Little Pot River catchment and from 0,29 to 0,53 in the Gqukunqa River catchment over the course of the 2018-2019 wet season. NDVI, biomass and vegetation cover was found to be higher on south-facing slopes than north-facing slopes in both catchments for the majority of the wet season. The Gqukunqa River has significantly higher daily sediment fluxes than the Little Pot River despite similar NDVI and rainfall intensities which is owed to the dispersive soils in the Gqukunqa River catchment. Soil surface hardness results were inconclusive due to rainfall before or during every field trip which changed the properties of the soil. The largest erosive rainfall, daily rainfall and daily sediment events occurred from January to March each wet season in both catchments. Rainfall intensity and sediment fluxes were found to have a weak relationship, however, there was a stronger relationship found between antecedent rainfall and sediment flux. The larger daily sediment fluxes in each catchment often did not result from an erosive rainfall event on the same day but rather from multiple days of rainfall which can result in saturated soils and runoff leading to surface and sub-surface erosion. The possibility of sub-surface erosion via chemical processes contributing to the larger sediment events was also explored to explain the stronger relationship between antecedent rainfall and daily sediment flux.

Tax revolts: an international perspective

- Description: The main goal of this study is to investigate whether tax revolts currently taking place and apparently threatening to take place in South Africa follow patterns shown in past international tax revolts or follow a unique pattern of their own. Tax revolts or tax rebellions are not a new phenomenon; they can be traced back to the beginning of time. Renowned tax revolts of the past include the Magna Carta and the Peasants’ Revolt in England, the Boston Tea Party, the Whiskey Rebellion, the Zimbabwean poll tax revolt, the Bambatha rebellion, the Tigre Rebellion, Proposition 13 and Margaret Thatcher’s poll tax revolt. These tax revolts were usually caused by the high burden of taxation, excessive government expenditure, corruption of government officials, declining tax morale of taxpayers and taxpayers’ perceptions of unfairness. In South Africa, elements of tax revolts have been on the rise. There has been a tax revolt against the e-tolling system in Gauteng since 2013. Non-payment of municipal rates is another form of tax revolt that has been and is happening in South Africa. Trade unions have also threatened strikes and mass action against various tax changes, including the value-added tax increase. Taxpayers, through media reporting, have been witnessing an increase in the use of taxpayers’ money for non-governmental agendas or overstated budgets. An increasing number of South Africans have been emigrating financially from South Africa to avoid a high taxation burden. The study falls within a post-positivist paradigm and an interpretive methodology is applied in the present research. The methodology is based on the fact that the social reality of tax revolts is not singular or objective, instead it is influenced by human experiences and social contexts. The study finds that tax revolts are currently occurring and threatening to occur in South Africa. The patterns of South African tax revolts are to a great extent similar to the patterns of international tax revolts, indicating the universalism of tax revolts. The study also confirms that South African tax revolts are, to a certain extent, unique.

Technology in conservation: towards a system for in-field drone detection of invasive vegetation

- Description: Remote sensing can assist in monitoring the spread of invasive vegetation. The adoption of camera-carrying unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly referred to as drones, as remote sensing tools has yielded images of higher spatial resolution than traditional techniques. Drones also have the potential to interact with the environment through the delivery of bio-control or herbicide, as seen with their adoption in precision agriculture. Unlike in agricultural applications, however, invasive plants do not have a predictable position relative to each other within the environment. To facilitate the adoption of drones as an environmental monitoring and management tool, drones need to be able to intelligently distinguish between invasive and non-invasive vegetation on the fly. In this thesis, we present the augmentation of a commercially available drone with a deep machine learning model to investigate the viability of differentiating between an invasive shrub and other vegetation. As a case study, this was applied to the shrub genus Hakea, originating in Australia and invasive in several countries including South Africa. However, for this research, the methodology is important, rather than the chosen target plant. A dataset was collected using the available drone and manually annotated to facilitate the supervised training of the model. Two approaches were explored, namely, classification and semantic segmentation. For each of these, several models were trained and evaluated to find the optimal one. The chosen model was then interfaced with the drone via an Android application on a mobile device and its performance was preliminarily evaluated in the field. Based on these findings, refinements were made and thereafter a thorough field evaluation was performed to determine the best conditions for model operation. Results from the classification task show that deep learning models are capable of distinguishing between target and other shrubs in ideal candidate windows. However, classification in this manner is restricted by the proposal of such candidate windows. End-to-end image segmentation using deep learning overcomes this problem, classifying the image in a pixel-wise manner. Furthermore, the use of appropriate loss functions was found to improve model performance. Field tests show that illumination and shadow pose challenges to the model, but that good recall can be achieved when the conditions are ideal. False positive detection remains an issue that could be improved. This approach shows the potential for drones as an environmental monitoring and management tool when coupled with deep machine learning techniques and outlines potential problems that may be encountered.

- Description: Remote sensing can assist in monitoring the spread of invasive vegetation. The adoption of camera-carrying unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly referred to as drones, as remote sensing tools has yielded images of higher spatial resolution than traditional techniques. Drones also have the potential to interact with the environment through the delivery of bio-control or herbicide, as seen with their adoption in precision agriculture. Unlike in agricultural applications, however, invasive plants do not have a predictable position relative to each other within the environment. To facilitate the adoption of drones as an environmental monitoring and management tool, drones need to be able to intelligently distinguish between invasive and non-invasive vegetation on the fly. In this thesis, we present the augmentation of a commercially available drone with a deep machine learning model to investigate the viability of differentiating between an invasive shrub and other vegetation. As a case study, this was applied to the shrub genus Hakea, originating in Australia and invasive in several countries including South Africa. However, for this research, the methodology is important, rather than the chosen target plant. A dataset was collected using the available drone and manually annotated to facilitate the supervised training of the model. Two approaches were explored, namely, classification and semantic segmentation. For each of these, several models were trained and evaluated to find the optimal one. The chosen model was then interfaced with the drone via an Android application on a mobile device and its performance was preliminarily evaluated in the field. Based on these findings, refinements were made and thereafter a thorough field evaluation was performed to determine the best conditions for model operation. Results from the classification task show that deep learning models are capable of distinguishing between target and other shrubs in ideal candidate windows. However, classification in this manner is restricted by the proposal of such candidate windows. End-to-end image segmentation using deep learning overcomes this problem, classifying the image in a pixel-wise manner. Furthermore, the use of appropriate loss functions was found to improve model performance. Field tests show that illumination and shadow pose challenges to the model, but that good recall can be achieved when the conditions are ideal. False positive detection remains an issue that could be improved. This approach shows the potential for drones as an environmental monitoring and management tool when coupled with deep machine learning techniques and outlines potential problems that may be encountered.

This study aimed to, 1) provide base-line data for microplastic loads in the nearshore environment along the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa over four short-term time scales: daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly; and, 2) assess whether there are any seasonal patterns in microplastics ingested by selected filter-feeding consumers at two sites along the southern and south-eastern Cape coastlines of South Africa. Results for part one of this study demonstrate no temporal patterns over the different time scales considered (ANOVA, p > 0.05 in all cases). Microplastic counts ranged on average from 55 ± 289 to 930 ± 462 microplastic particles.m-3. With the exception of two instances, microfibres constituted > 50 % (range: 47 to 97 %) of the total microplastic counts. Part two of this study assessed the size range of, and seasonal and spatial patterns in ingested microplastic. No significant differences were found in the number of microplastics ingested within seasons between the mussels Perna perna (Linnaeus, 1758) and Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck, 1819), and the barnacles, Octomeris angulosa (Sowerby, 1825) and Tetraclita serrata (Darwin 1954) (Student’s t-test; d.f = 18; p > 0.05 in all cases), or between the two sites sampled, Kenton-on-Sea, Eastern Cape, and Wilderness, Western Cape (ANOVA; d.f. = 18; p > 0.05 in all cases). The nitric acid digestion technique was used to determine the presence of ingested microplastics. Microplastic loads ranged from 2 ± 1 to 33 ± 19 microplastics.g-1 wwt across all consumers, and the size of ingested microplastics ranged from 1 to 16 μm. Though highly variable, the absence of statistically significant differences in ingestion rates points to a ubiquity in the availability of microplastics within the water column over time and space.

- Description: The majority of rural households in developing countries are heavily dependent on non-timber forest products (NTFPs) to fulfill much of their basic daily needs. In Mozambique more than 64% of the population lives in rural areas and depends heavily in the extraction of NTFPs to complement agricultural production. One substantial source of NTFPs are palm species. Palms are sources of food, building materials, cloth, ornaments, medicines, and are also used for cultural purposes. In southern Mozambique two important palms species used as NTFPs are Hyphaene coriacea and Phoenix reclinata. These two species provide an array of subsistence and commercial products. The sap, leaves and stems of these two palms are harvested by local people as sources of traditional beverages, weaving, roofing, fencing and furniture material as well as other household utensils. The effects (if any) of harvesting of these palm products on palm distribution, population structure, dynamics and viability have never been examined, and thus the sustainability of the practices and benefits flows to local livelihoods are unknow-n. Any effects harvesting effects may also be exacerbated by predicted climate change for the area. The present study aims to investigate the role of the palm species Hyphaene coriacea and Phoenix reclinata in the livelihoods of households in the Zitundo area, Matutuine district, southern Mozambique and under future climate scenarios. Specifically, this study: i) evaluates the abundance, population structure and harvesting selection of these species; ii) characterizes the ethnobotanical knowledge and use of the two species; iii) examines the local production and trade of palm wine in the area; iv) examines the contribution of palm income to livelihoods and income diversification in area; v) describes the local management practices and perceptions on palm productivity and abundance; and vi) models the current and future distribution of the these palm species in the area. To evaluate the abundance, population structure and stability of these two palm species a population census was carried out, and the size class distribution, Simpson index of dominance, permutation index and the quotient between successive size classes were calculated. I further calculated the preference ratio for specific size classes. Additionally a questionnaire survey was conducted with 179 randomly selected households from the 16 villages in the study area to characterize the ethnobotanical knowledge and use of these two species, as well as to examine the contribution of palm income to livelihoods and diversification. Standard ethnobotanical indices were used as measures of each palm species use and knowledge while principal component analysis and cluster analysis were applied to highlight the livelihood patterns and the role of diversification and of palm income in local livelihoods. Structured interviews with 37 palm tappers were additionally used to examine the local production and trade of palm wine in the area, while both the household survey and palm tappers interviews, were employed to investigate the local management practices and perceptions on palms productivity and abundance. Maxent Software was used to model the current and future under climate change distribution of the two palm species. Hyphaene coriacea was more abundant than Phoenix reclinata. Both species exhibited steep negative slopes in the regression analyses of size class distribution, indicating the presence of more individuals in shorter size classes. Although there was a dominance of shorter over taller size classes, limited recruitment was observed through low stem densities of seedlings and juveniles compared to the 1-50 cm size class The Simpson index of dominance, the permutation index, and the fluctuating quotients between the consecutive size classes showed a level of instability in both populations. Hyphaene coriacea appeared to be more resilient to tapping than Phoenix reclinata as showed by the higher rate of stem survival after tapping. Hyphaene coriacea was favored for tapping compared to Phoenix reclinata. The most preferred size class to tap for both species was between 101cm and 150 cm. Currently the distribution of Hyphaene coriacea and Phoenix reclinata was mostly confined to the eastern side of the study area. Most of the area was predicted as unsuitable for both palm species, with less than six percent predicted to be suitable or higher. The occurrence of both species appeared to be influenced mostly by water related variables, such as precipitation, and distance to rivers and distance to water bodies. The habitat suitability for Hyphaene coriacea was predicted to increase under future climate conditions scenarios, while little variation was predicted for Phoenix reclinata distribution. The knowledge about the uses of these two palm species was widespread in the area, although only 32% of respondents were engaged in palm exploitation. Thirteen palm products were exploited, with palm wine production from the sap of both palms being the dominant activity, followed by broom production from Phoenix reclinata stems and basket production from Hyphaene coriacea leaves. The cultural importance of these species included the production of anklets and skirts used during traditional dances and the use of palm wine in the traditional ritual of libation. Palm tapping was practiced year round in five of the sixteen villages in the area. Palm tapping was an important livelihood activity, contributing over 80% of tappers’ total annual income, and tappers earned up to three times more than the national minimum wage for the agricultural and forestry sector. Palm wine was also a highly commercial commodity in Zitundo area, with an average commercialization index above 60%. The income from palm wine sales showed an important role in mitigating the level of poverty in the area. Palm income accounted for over 60% reduction on poverty incidence among palm tappers. Households in Zitundo further engaged in some level of livelihood diversification. The majority of households adopted a wage-based strategy, although this strategy was among the less remunerative in terms of per capita cash income. A palm-based livelihood strategy, although adopted only by 11% of households, was one of the most remunerative strategies. Palm income played a vital role in enhancing household livelihoods and mitigating poverty in the area as shown by the lower poverty incidences among households engaged in the palm-based livelihood strategy than alternatives strategies. The village of household residency, along with household demographic and socio-economic characteristics appeared to determine the knowledge and exploitation level of palms as well as a households’ choice of livelihood strategy, level of palm wine returns, commercialization index and palm income dependency. The importance of palms in local livelihoods and poverty alleviation needs greater acknowledgement by government and development agencies in the area. Palm wine, broom and basket production have a high potential for income generation, and therefore should be included in future local development policies and poverty reduction strategies. Although palms are an open access resource in Zitundo area, the perception is that they are abundant and that tapping does not have many detrimental effects. However, this study found some negative impacts of tapping on the recruitment of both palms species. The inclusion of palm products in future development programs and poverty reduction strategies will require the design of participatory conservation and management strategies that involve all palm users groups and others stakeholders and include long-term participatory monitoring of the effect of palm use on the populations.

- Description: Over the years, the financial sphere and its systematic process has transcended from one paradigm to another. Most prominent is the traditional finance paradigm dominating the financial sphere majorly throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The ideology and the foundation of the traditional finance paradigm was centred on the concept of rationality. Within the context of the current research, the traditional finance paradigm postulates that individuals in the process of making investment decisions, acquire and analyse all available information in the stock markets, upon which they make a rational investment decision. In other words, the traditional finance paradigm portrays individuals as perfectly informed, rational decision makers, capable of objectively solving complex problems –Homo economicus. However, research in the field of psychology gave rise to the questions and concerns that started to emerge in the 1980s concerning the realistic nature of the assumptions of the traditional finance paradigm. As opposed to the assumptions of traditional finance, these research show that it is impossible for investors to analyse the shares of all the listed companies in the market in order to make rational investment decisions due to the ambiguous nature of information available. In the behavioural finance paradigm individuals’ decision making are viewed to incorporate factors such as emotions, heuristics, experiences, intuition and perceptions. These factors in turn are seen to induce biases (such as availability bias and overconfidence) which leads to subjective decision making. The concept of behavioural finance is based on realistic outcomes of events in the financial sphere for example, the repeated occurrence of financial crises in an environment where all participants are assumed to be rational. The behavioural finance paradigm challenges the assumption of the traditional finance paradigm which is embedded on the concept of rationality. The purpose of the present research is to investigate whether brands of listed companies on the Nigerian Stock Exchange trigger behavioural finance biases in investment decisions of individual investors in Nigeria. More specifically, the aim of the present research was to establish relationships between the independent sub-variables of brand knowledge (brand awareness and brand image) and brand relationship (brand loyalty and brand attachment), the mediating sub-variables of behavioural finance biases (availability bias and overconfidence) and the dependent variable (investment decisions). To this end, objectives and hypotheses were formulated to guide the research. In order to achieve the stated objectives and test the formulated hypotheses, the present research adopted the positivistic paradigm and the methodological process involved quantitative methods. Data was acquired by means of an online questionnaire from members of the Independent shareholders association of Nigeria and individual investors whose contacts were provided by an independent broker (n= 182). The research instrument showed satisfactory levels of validity on all measures (between 0.40 and 0.89) and a relatively highly internal consistency for reliability with Cronbach’s alpha coefficient scores of between 0.81 and 0.93. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed. Descriptive statistics involved frequency distribution, mean and standard deviation. Inferential statistics involved Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, Multiple linear regression analyses, T-test and ANOVA. Using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, results show that all variables were positively correlated. Results of the Multiple linear regression analyses performed, indicated that there are positive relationships between brand awareness and investment decisions; brand awareness and availability bias; brand loyalty and investment decisions; brand loyalty and overconfidence; overconfidence and investment decisions. Furthermore, Multiple linear regression analyses also indicated that availability bias mediates the relationship between brand awareness and investment decisions; and overconfidence mediates the relationship between brand loyalty and investment decisions. Results of the T-test indicated that there is no significant mean difference found in the responses of the different sex group (male and female) on independent, mediating and dependent variables. While ANOVA indicated that there is a significant difference found between the age category of respondents and brand loyalty; age category of respondents and investment decisions. Based on the results of the analyses performed, conclusions, contributions and recommendations were enumerated. Practical recommendations were made to the government, individual investors, companies and brand experts, professional brokers, financial analysts and economy developers.

- Description: Over the years, the financial sphere and its systematic process has transcended from one paradigm to another. Most prominent is the traditional finance paradigm dominating the financial sphere majorly throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The ideology and the foundation of the traditional finance paradigm was centred on the concept of rationality. Within the context of the current research, the traditional finance paradigm postulates that individuals in the process of making investment decisions, acquire and analyse all available information in the stock markets, upon which they make a rational investment decision. In other words, the traditional finance paradigm portrays individuals as perfectly informed, rational decision makers, capable of objectively solving complex problems –Homo economicus. However, research in the field of psychology gave rise to the questions and concerns that started to emerge in the 1980s concerning the realistic nature of the assumptions of the traditional finance paradigm. As opposed to the assumptions of traditional finance, these research show that it is impossible for investors to analyse the shares of all the listed companies in the market in order to make rational investment decisions due to the ambiguous nature of information available. In the behavioural finance paradigm individuals’ decision making are viewed to incorporate factors such as emotions, heuristics, experiences, intuition and perceptions. These factors in turn are seen to induce biases (such as availability bias and overconfidence) which leads to subjective decision making. The concept of behavioural finance is based on realistic outcomes of events in the financial sphere for example, the repeated occurrence of financial crises in an environment where all participants are assumed to be rational. The behavioural finance paradigm challenges the assumption of the traditional finance paradigm which is embedded on the concept of rationality. The purpose of the present research is to investigate whether brands of listed companies on the Nigerian Stock Exchange trigger behavioural finance biases in investment decisions of individual investors in Nigeria. More specifically, the aim of the present research was to establish relationships between the independent sub-variables of brand knowledge (brand awareness and brand image) and brand relationship (brand loyalty and brand attachment), the mediating sub-variables of behavioural finance biases (availability bias and overconfidence) and the dependent variable (investment decisions). To this end, objectives and hypotheses were formulated to guide the research. In order to achieve the stated objectives and test the formulated hypotheses, the present research adopted the positivistic paradigm and the methodological process involved quantitative methods. Data was acquired by means of an online questionnaire from members of the Independent shareholders association of Nigeria and individual investors whose contacts were provided by an independent broker (n= 182). The research instrument showed satisfactory levels of validity on all measures (between 0.40 and 0.89) and a relatively highly internal consistency for reliability with Cronbach’s alpha coefficient scores of between 0.81 and 0.93. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed. Descriptive statistics involved frequency distribution, mean and standard deviation. Inferential statistics involved Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, Multiple linear regression analyses, T-test and ANOVA. Using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, results show that all variables were positively correlated. Objectives This study examined the psychosocial and forensic mental health profile of women offenders referred by eastern Cape courts for forensic evaluation. A range of socio-demographic, criminological, clinical and forensic mental health variables were systematically explored. Methods A bi-phasic, mixed methods study design was adopted. The clinical and forensic records of all women referred for forensic evaluation to Fort England forensic psychiatric hospital in the Eastern Cape, South Africa were retrospectively reviewed, comprising 173 individual cases in the study period of 1993-2017. Inferential statistical analyses (chi-squared and multivariate logistic regression) were applied to explore relationships between variables and offending outcomes of nterest. Detailed semi-structured interviews were subsequently conducted with a sub-sample of 8 women with mental disorder and violent offending ackgrounds. Interview transcripts thematically analysed. Results Most women came from impoverished and disadvantaged backgrounds. Whilst the majority were first offenders, a high proportion had violent index offences, with murder, attempted murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm accounting for over half of cases. The majority of victims of violence were well known to the perpetrator, especially as biological children, intimate male partners or close family members. Biological children in their first year of life were particularly vulnerable to being victims of homicidal violence. Disproportionately high rates of pre-offence mental illness, alcohol misuse, HIV infection and prior abuse of the offender (especially by intimate male partners) were present. High rates of severe mental disorders (especially psychiatric comorbidity and psychotic-spectrum disorders), and relatively low rates of personality disorders and substance disorders were diagnosed. The majority of women were declared to lack trial competence and criminal capacity, respectively, following forensic evaluation. Women who had backgrounds of prior abuse themselves had over three mes the odds of subsequent violent offending in general, and almost six times the odds of homicidal offending in particular. Homicidal offences were significantly more commonly committed by women with no prior psychiatric history and no psychiatric comorbidity. Women who committed homicide had over eleven times of killing children as opposed to adults. Women over the age of 30 years, and those without psychiatric comorbidity, were significantly less likely to have killed children. Thematic analysis of interviews emphasized the important roles played by gender, self-image, and mental health in violent offending pathways. Conclusions A complex array of socio-demographic, criminological, clinical and forensic variables interact in women offenders of the Eastern Cape referred by courts for forensic evaluation. Exploration of these factors improves understanding of the broader psychosocial context of female offending, and of the personal experiences of the women themselves. This in turn provides an enhanced gender-focus to guide the progressive changes required in policy, legislative, clinical and research endeavours in this field.

- Description: Reintroduced lion (Panthera leo) populations pose several ecological and management challenges in small (< 1,000 km2), fenced wildlife reserves. Changes in the natural socialecological conditions of reintroduced lion populations may lead to rapid population growth and a breakdown of natural predator-prey relationships. Reduced competition with other lions also likely reduces the potential for reintroduced lions to naturally form groups. My study used a combination of questionnaire surveys with tourists, existing lion demographic data from 16 wildlife reserves across South Africa and a controlled lion social experiment to address these ecological and management issues. Tourism was the primary reason for lion reintroductions. Tourists scored lions highly in terms of preference for viewing on safari, in particular, lions in larger, natural groups and adult males. Viewing lions also enhanced a tourists’ overall safari experience. The breakdown of natural social behaviour may likely therefore reduce tourist satisfaction related to lions. The number of resident prides and male coalitions in a reserve affected lion vital rates. Lion population growth rate was highest in reserves that contained a single resident pride, and the presence of unknown adult males significantly reduced cub survival and lioness birth intervals. The ratio of male cubs born also increased in reserves with a higher density of unknown adult males. Fertility control measures (deslorelin implants and unilateral hysterectomy) were effective at limiting lion population growth. Deslorelin treatment increased the age of first reproduction or the birth interval and decreased the subsequent litter size of treated lionesses to closer reflect natural vital rates in larger (> 10, 000 km2) systems. However, there was variability in infertility response between lionesses including adverse reactions in a small proportion of treated individuals. The number of resident prides and male coalitions in a reserve affected lion social behaviour. Lionesses formed larger groups in reserves with a higher density of unknown adult female neighbours, likely driven by territory defence. Lion prides with resident cubs were generally more fragmented, likely in response to reduced competition from unknown adult males. However, in areas with a high density of unknown adult female neighbours, prides with cubs formed larger groups likely in response to heightened territory defence. Therefore, with smaller foraging group sizes, predation rate was increased in reserves with reduced competition from unknown lions. My study supports a metapopulation approach for the management of lions in small, fenced reserves, and the standardisation of lion management procedures and database management. Endorsed by the Biodiversity Management Plan for lions in South Africa, this will enhance the long-term conservation potential of isolated populations.

Although the importance of mangroves for resident and transient juveniles is well recognised, the roles that mangrove microhabitats play for larvae is not yet comprehensively understood. This study aimed to determine how microhabitats with varying degrees of complexity influence the composition, abundance and distribution of larval communities that inhabit mangrove forests and the physiological responses of larvae to acute temperature variations in relation to ontogenetic stage and microenvironment exposure. Two relatively pristine study sites were selected to represent a warm temperate and subtropical mangrove system in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal on the east coast of South Africa, respectively. The differences in complexity among the root systems of Rhizophora mucronata, Avicennia marina and Bruguiera gymnorhiza were assessed using 3D scanning and the computed 3D models were then analysed using four complexity metrics. Results indicated that A. marina is the most complex in terms of surface-volume ratio, R. mucronata has the most interstitial space among its roots and B. gymnorhiza and R. mucronata differ in their fractal dimensions. Larvae collected in each microhabitat at each site using light traps showed that, despite temperature and salinity homogeneity across microenvironments, spatio-temporal differences occurred in both fish and invertebrate assemblages. This trend suggests that microhabitat structural complexity exerts an influence on larval community composition by acting as a microscape of available habitat, which ensures ecological linkages within and among the mangrove forest and adjacent ecosystems. In addition, the oxygen consumption rates of mangrove-associated brachyuran larvae varied according to mangrove microhabitat, whereby larvae collected at less complex environments had the highest metabolic rates at increased temperatures. Moreover, ontogenetic shifts in physiology were prevalent as older brachyuran larvae were more eurythermal than earlier stages, suggesting that thermally stressful events will have a greater impact on recently spawned larvae. Overall, the interstitial spaces within individual root systems are the most important complexity measure, as utilisation of these mangrove microhabitats is scale-dependent, and larvae will most likely occupy spaces inaccessible to large predators. Likewise, microscale variation in the environmental conditions and ontogenetic stage of brachyuran larvae within the mangrove microscape, can amplify the physiological responses to rapid temperature variations. Results suggest that early stage larvae are the most vulnerable to mass-mortality, and if thermally stressful events increase in frequency, duration and magnitude, the larval supply for the successful recruitment into adult populations could be under threat. Through linking how mangrove microhabitat complexity influences larvae in terms of community metrics and physiology, this study paves the way for further advancement of our understanding of how microscale processes emerge into meso- and macroscale patterns and influence the stability and functioning of highly productive ecosystems.

- Description: This thesis is motivated by my experience of Inzilo: Ngoba ngihlala kwabafileyo, a live performance by South African visual artist Buhlebezwe Siwani. The performance took place at Michaelis Galleries, University of Cape Town (UCT), as part of a group exhibition Between Subject and Object: human remains at the interface of art and science (2014), which accompanied the Medical Humanities in Africa Conference (from 28 – 29 August 2014). As an entry into my discussion, I describe how Siwani’s performance makes use of death and burial ritual in what seems to be an intention to make art that is (re)presenting an activity of reality to invade and control the sphere of feelings, emotions and a sense of ceremony that is dependent on both ritual and rites of the performance. I grapple with the fact that I experienced a ritual performance in a gallery space. Furthermore, I question how walking out of the performance I thought of the lines between art and/or life. The role of ritual in my thesis explores the symbolic meanings, powers and intentions of ritual rites in Africa. This reflection maps out historical locations that are relevant to the major debates, definitions, themes and the experiences of ritual as part of academic research. From Siwani’s practice as an artist and isangoma to other expressions in the fields of history, sociology, religion, feminism, to mention a few, my thesis is an enquiry that engages ritual and performance art theory and scholarship. Through a qualitative analysis, my methodology rejects a chronological, thematic and discipline centered research. Rather, I use a multidisciplinary approach based on critical visual analysis as knowledge creation in the visual arts, for example archives, documentation, performance, text, video, installation, painting, sculpture, etc. The findings suggests that the role of ritual in performance art is not a singular exploration, nor is it based on separating ritual and performance art. The results further reveal that ritual in performance art is not a reenactment of patterns and human behaviours, nor is the notion of reenactment used to denote the myriad meanings and functions of re-performing historical ritual events into performance art. Throughout, my thesis provides a focus that demonstrates the significance of how ritual in performance art has a profound subjective (personal or individual) and collective holistic way of serving human and spiritual needs, and that of creating an environment that is open to the content and context of art as it relates with traditional African religious practices, beliefs and knowledges. Focus is given to three major themes that make up the three chapters of my research: firstly, I reflect on death as personified by Siwani’s performance Inzilo: Ngoba ii ngihlala kwabafileyo and her role as isangoma. Here death is used to draw specific attention to the body in process of embodied presence and absence of physical and spiritual worlds. Secondly, drawing on Siwani’s concept of secrecy and boundaries of concealing and revealing rituals meanings and powers as isangoma, I question the role of secrets, which highlights the significance of bodies (human and natural sites of ritual) in ritual performance. Finally, the idea of a trace is explored. The intersecting use of a trace as the thinking-making-doing of ritual in performance articulates a connected thread that sets in motion the trace of ritual (installation, image and marked space pf ritual) as an afterlife that offers a continued space of processual ceremony for multiple effective encounters and movements..

- Description: This thesis is motivated by my experience of Inzilo: Ngoba ngihlala kwabafileyo, a live performance by South African visual artist Buhlebezwe Siwani. The performance took place at Michaelis Galleries, University of Cape Town (UCT), as part of a group exhibition Between Subject and Object: human remains at the interface of art and science (2014), which accompanied the Medical Humanities in Africa Conference (from 28 – 29 August 2014). The workload of flight attendants during short-haul flight operations: a system analysis

Flight attendant fatigue is a significant problem in the aviation industry as it continues to jeopardize the ability to fulfil important safety and security roles which is critical in performance duty of a flight attendant. However, little attention has been accomplished to the workload, working conditions and fatigue of flight attendants crew in transport aircraft. In addition, there is currently less research that have also embraced the problematic of smaller regional/commercial operation (short-haul flight operations) inducing fatigue among short-haul flight attendants as the nature of this operation are often characterised with high productivity expectations in a demanding environment with high time pressures resulting in high workloads and fatigue. Thus, flight attendant fatigue and workload is a worldwide challenge in this operational environment and less attention has been given to the determining factors. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine the workload factors contributing to flight attendant fatigue during short-haul flight operations. Methods (System analysis): To achieve the research aim, the work system analysis, based on the Smith and Carayon-Sainfort model was chosen as the main research approach which was conducted in two ways; based on existing literature and secondly based on expert interviews. This method provided a systemic aspect to understand the whole work system of flight attendants work during short-haul operations in order to identify all the contributing factors to flight attendant fatigue and workload. Results: The literature analysis and the data from the expert interviews highlighted significant findings to flight attendant fatigue and workload. The reasons for flight attendant fatigue operating short-haul flights can be found at organizational, task, individual, environmental levels and tools and technologies and due to the interaction of the factors. The main factors of flight attendants’ fatigue are thought primarily as a function of scheduling due to irregular, mixed schedules with early starts and late finishes, extended duty days (long working hours), as well as high workload, due to the short turnaround flights, the number of sectors flown in a single duty period and duty length and high jobs demands. In addition, flight duty and rest regulations, confined work space in the cabin, vibrations, noise and lighting, sleeping in an unfamiliar environment, family responsibilities all add to additional stress placed on the body which can influence workload and sleep and consequently influencing fatigue. Conclusion: Overall the study determined that flight attendant fatigue is a significant problem in modern industry of short-haul operations. Using this systematic approach (work system analysis based on the framework of the work system model developed by Smith and Carayon-Sainfort (1989) allowed for an accurate representation of the complexity of flight attendant work environment in short-haul aviation industries, thus contributed to an increased understanding of fatigue and risk factors that span the entire work system and aid in identifying the patterns in combination of work system variables that are associated with increased risk to flight attendant fatigue. Data was collected using a case study method, where each individual monitor and their particular context, was regarded as a case. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 17 monitors and five Tsitsa Project staff; this was supported by field notes and the reviewing of project documents including field reports. The realist analysis looked at the context of the monitors in general and the mechanisms applied by the project in recruiting, training and managing the monitors. A second layer of mechanisms was identified as those responses from the monitors to what the project was introducing to them. Outcomes were both positive and negative, including how long monitors remained in the initiative, what benefits they derived from the process, and what potential benefits they did not achieve. This included lost opportunities to provide recognition for skills and experience gained. Recommendations are made regarding the recruitment, training and management of monitors, to optimise benefits for the monitors, the host institution and the initiative’s staff. The study is significant because of its particular yet representative characteristics and it will assist both the Tsitsa Project, which aims to expand its citizen environmental monitoring initiative, as well as wider Natural Resource Management Programmes in South Africa. It is also hoped that it will contribute to the literature on environmental monitoring as a little researched form of citizen science globally.

Towards understanding how exploitation influences the wild energetic response of marine fish to temperature variability

As fish are increasingly exposed to temperatures on the edges of their optimal thermal performance window, their physiological response is expected to shape their future performance. It is therefore concerning that exploitation can select for specific physiological phenotypes, as this may affect fished populations’ physiological response to temperature change. A recent laboratory study revealed fewer high-performance metabolic-scope phenotypes in an exploited population of the marine Sparid Chrysoblepus laticeps across a range of experimental temperatures in comparison to an unexploited population. This suggested that individuals in exploited populations may have less available energy for aerobic performance at thermal extremes, which may reduce the resilience of the population to changes in temperature. However, since laboratory experiments exclude numerous other variables that fish encounter in the wild, it was necessary to test this finding in a natural setting. This thesis aimed to further develop the laboratory study by assessing whether exploitation effects the wild energetic response of C. laticeps to thermal variability. To achieve this, the field metabolic rate of C. laticeps, a resident and endemic South African fish, from a near-pristine population (Tsitsikamma National Park) and a heavily exploited population (Port Elizabeth) was compared using acoustic accelerometry. A laboratory-based study using a swim-tunnel respirometer and accelerometer transmitters was conducted to develop a model to predict metabolic rate from acceleration data at temperatures from 10 to 22⁰C. Acceleration, temperature, mass and population (exploited/unexploited) were found to be the best predictors of the metabolic rate of C. laticeps and were incorporated into the model to estimate the field metabolic rate of fish tagged with acoustic accelerometers in the wild. To examine the combined effects of temperature and exploitation on the field metabolic rate of C. laticeps in their natural state, two fine-scale telemetry arrays with temperature loggers were used to assess the acceleration of the fish across different temperatures in the wild for three months during a period of high thermal variability. Ten fish from the exploited and unexploited populations were caught, surgically implanted with accelerometer transmitters and released back into the wild. Close to 500 000 and 400 000 acceleration estimates were recorded from wild exploited and unexploited fish, respectively. The field metabolic rate of both populations was estimated by combining the field acceleration and temperature data with the laboratory calibration model. The field metabolic rate of C. laticeps from the exploited population was constrained near cold and warm extremes compared to no constraints observed in the unexploited population. This was attributed to reduced inter-individual variability in the field metabolic rate-temperature relationship within the exploited population.
