- Description: Traditional notions of masculinity which give power and authority to one dominant form of masculinity in the contemporary era are under scrutiny as they are constantly being challenged through the emergence of alternative forms of masculinity. Through the use of Wanner’s novels, this work examines how South African masculinities are constructed, how they are challenged, and how alternative forms are negotiated. It unpacks Wanner’s depiction of hegemonic, thwarted, complicit and marginalised masculinities as it traces the diversity and fluidity of masculinities in these literary texts and the resultant alternative masculinities these novels propose. Furthermore, this work foregrounds the often taken-for-granted role of women and portrays it as the centre around which masculinities are constructed. This is achieved by probing deeper into the familial unit and looking at the traditional gender roles of women, taking into consideration that the South African constitution allows them either to stick to these roles or to choose from an array of career choices presented to them. It is suggested that instead of viewing masculinity as a standard uniform entity, it is profitable to perceive it as a heterogeneous entity, comprising of different versions which are determined by different factors. This dissertation examines female characters in three South African novels namely Hunger Eats a Man (2015) by Nkosinathi Sithole, Men of the South (2010) by Zukiswa Wanner and Black Diamond (2009) by Zakes Mda and exposes the effects of feminized consumerism. The theoretical framework for the study is taken from Carolyn Elizabeth Miller’s (2006) theory of consumerism and sexist oppression and is used to expose the oppressive effects of consumerism that nevertheless construct feminine identity in a capitalist world. To augment Miller’s theory, the work of other theorists are consulted to establish a theoretical framework for analysing feminized consumerism. The first chapter shows the effects of feminized consumerism as oppressive to wealthy women and poor women alike. The second chapter shows that female characters are domesticated by consumerism; domestication referring to the phenomenon of prohibiting women from male spaces or subordinating women within those spaces. The third chapter shows that some of the female characters are engaged in commodity fetishism and that they are affected in adverse ways because of this. The fourth chapter explains how female characters are portrayed as inferior to their male counterparts as a result of femininized consumerism in storytelling. - Description: Access to adequate water and sanitation services in South Africa still remain a pipe dream for the millions who are trapped at the bottom of the class structures in the country. The poverty stricken communities living in Townships such as Motherwell, everyday long for water services infrastructure to be built in their places of residence. The costs of accessing water services also becomes a setback for many consumers in the area, this is after the infrastructure has been installed in their areas. The high unemployment rate plays an enormous role in many consumers not affording water services. Bureaucracy between the government department of Housing and the NMMBM also impedes delivery of water services for without formal housing, water and sanitation is impossible to be accessed within the households. The study revealed from the semi-structured interviews which were held with Mayoral Council official and Ward Councillors as well as with members of the communities NU 12 and 29 that access to adequate water services was not successful and satisfactory. The findings of the research demonstrate that the Municipality has a problem with retaining staff members in the portfolio of Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity and Energy, which is the responsible department for providing water and sanitation services to the local inhabitants. This study was conducted from April 2009 to November 2009 and it was aimed at finding the Barriers to accessing water services in the Motherwell Township.

Although this phenomenon is well researched, teachers’ experiences of stress remains a worrying challenge particularly to schools’ effectiveness. This study sought to establish how monitoring and management mechanism that can assist teachers to cope with stress challenges. These are some of the recommendation: that the school disciplinary committee should be trained in various disciplinary measures that may be implemented in the school to curb learner ill-discipline and lack of commitment, that working relationship should be built between schools and the Department of Basic Education, motivational speakers and educational counsellors should meet with all learners on a regular basis to motivate them to have high desire for and interest in education and to build their self-confidence in the classroom, providing all the schools with healthy environment in classrooms, provision of learning and teaching materials to all schools, schools should set up an effective school-parents partnership in order to promote a safe drug and alcohol free environment, employ enough teachers in all secondary schools and the Department of Basic Education at district level should make room for stress management workshops for teachers.

- Description: The aim and scope of this study is to analyse the novel Yakhal’ Indoda (2010) written by Siphiwo Mahala. Since this book was written in the period known as the modern times in the new South Africa, it therefore tends to focus on the issues that disturb the peace of the citizens of South Africa exactly in this period of democratic South Africa. For that reason, the objective of this study is to associate the factors which Mahala has written about with those that are found in the contemporary South Africa which are regarded as issues disturbing the lives of South Africans at present. As it is of importance before the researcher deals with the central issue, there has to be a thorough knowledge of the theory of the subject that is being discussed at hand. The Literature Review with regard to this study takes into account the books written by Satyo, Duka, Brooks and Warren, to mention just a few. These authors, from their different academic perspectives, do their best on explaining the theory of the issues that will be discussed in this study. The Theoretical Framework that will be used in this study consists of the views of the writers who fought for a better political dispensation in the countries that were previously colonized. In this regard, the views of Ngùgì wa Thiong’o, and those of Steve Biko will be assessed in this study. The method that will be used in conducting this research is none other than that of Text Analysis. This simply means the researching student will focus mainly on the books found at the UFH library and other libraries. The chapter titles and their relevant outlines follow below: Chapter One is an introduction for this entire research. This chapter focuses more on the aims of this study, the importance or significance, limitations, methodology to be followed. Furthermore, this chapter gives a brief background of the author of the novel that will be analysed as well as the background of the novel. Chapter Two focuses on the theory of this research. This will be done through two theories. The researcher will first present a theory of the novel, as well as the Postcolonial theory. Under the novel theory, the researcher will discuss some vii features of the novel. However, the researcher’s emphasis will be on the theme that underlies in Mahala’s novel, Yakhal’ Indoda (2010). Chapter Three focuses on the theme of this research. The researcher will analyse the way Mahala portrays crime, corruption, unemployment and poverty in his novel. The researcher then will validate Mahala’s point of view against other authors with regards to the identified problems. - Description: Estuaries are globally recognized for their contribution to the coastal marine environment by acting as nursery grounds for numerous marine estuarine-dependent fish species. These linking ecosystems between marine and riverine environments, are ideal for these species due to the habitat diversity, nutrient and food availability, shallower and calmer environments they provide relative to the ocean. Abrupt hydrodynamic and physico-chemical changes which frequently occur in estuaries impose physiological stress and requires superior adaptability in the fish that reside within them. This is exacerbated by anthropogenic modifications to estuaries which affects their natural ecological function. The Seekoei Estuary is one of 192 temporarily open/closed estuaries (TOCEs) in South Africa and these estuaries are characterised by their periodical connection to the sea due to the formation of a mouth berm. These estuaries are the dominant type in South Africa. A lot of research has been done in these kinds of estuaries, however, it is still limited due to their vast numbers. These estuaries are popular for human settlement and this has led to mismanagement due to the lack of ecological information. Furthermore, because of their inability to continuously flush out water, temporarily open closed estuaries are more vulnerable to pollution and anthropogenic modifications. The aim of this study was to assess the small fish community in relation to their environment in the hypersaline anthropogenically-altered Seekoei Estuary, by analysing the spatio-temporal trends of physico-chemical properties, nutrient loads, phytoplankton biomass and fish community structure. In addition, histological adaptation in gills of fish that survive hypersaline water was investigated. The study found that physico-chemical properties were influenced by anthropogenic alterations, in particular adverse water abstraction, instream water obstructions and artificial breaching. Nutrient concentration was found to be influenced by the intense agricultural practices in the upper reaches. It was evident that nutrient concentration (dissolved inorganic phosphorus) coupled with high salinity and optimum temperature (15 oC - 20 oC) affected the phytoplankton biomass. This estuary’s inability to naturally breach makes it vulnerable to phytoplankton blooms. The accumulation of cohesive silt caused by low river inflow, due to water abstraction in the upper reaches, was attributed to this estuary’s prolonged mouth closure. This was exacerbated by the presence of the causeway, which acts as a barrier between the middle and lower estuary. The abundance of marine fish species in the estuary, despite its long closure, indicates that the larvae and juveniles of these species make use of overwash events and brief artificial breaching events to recruit into the estuary. The high species richness in iii sites below the causeway is indicative of the barrier effect, which prevents the migration of some species to the upper reaches. This was evident during a massive fish kill, recorded during this study, which was more severe in sites below the causeway than above it. - Description: This project scrutinises and examines the important role played by A.C. Jordan in the struggle for liberation of the African people in South Africa. The main objective of this research is to unveil and expatiate the extent to which A.C. Jordan used the African custom and culture to fight the oppression of blacks by whites in his novel, Ingqumbo Yeminyanya. In this book he highlights the conflict between Western Culture and Education, and African customs and tradition. Whilst at the same time showing the superiority of the African culture over the Western values and tradition. This raises the ire of the white folks like Shepherd, the editor. It led to Shepherd's refusal to publish this novel, causing a two- year delay in the publication of this book. The book was supposed to have been published in 1938, but was published in 1940. Literary experts in all aspects of literature generally, have commented extensively on the book of A.C. Jordan, Ingqumbo Yeminyanya, analysing the book from its original isiXhosa version, to its English, Afrikaans and other translations. To a great extent, past and current research by literary experts puts special emphasis on Jordan as a well renowned writer of note and well acclaimed academic who has made tremendous contribution in the development of African literature. However, very few of these experts delve into Jordan's political activity and involvement in the fight against oppression and liberation of the Black's in South Africa and abroad. Mda (1991:1) concurs with this notion. His (Jordan’s) contribution in the literacy and educational fields have, I venture to say, been adequately portrayed. It is his political life that has not been fully addressed Mda says that literature does enough to portray Jordan in many aspects in which he excelled but not enough is done in the political aspect. Therefore, this research endeavours to contribute to the few already made about Jordan's political activism and the valuable contribution he has made in the fight for liberation of the African people. The methodology used in the study is descriptive, investigative, interpretative and analytic with the aim of illustrating the views of the author on the book in question. This makes it easy for the researcher to elucidate her objectives of the study on the theme of Jordan’s novel. Marxist theory as developed by Antonio Gramsci, and other theories related to it have been employed as the framework of this study. This theory has been chosen since it proved to be more relevant to the objectives of the study. The findings of the study reveal that A.C. Jordan has been very much vocal in addressing political issues of South Africa during his time, using both African custom and culture in his novel. The findings also indicate the vital role played by Jordan in the struggle for the freedom of South Africa. Recommendations are that Jordan deserves to be awarded like any other politician of his calibre, who displayed commitment and loyalty in the liberation struggle. - Description: Research indicates that effective talent management is essential in achieving organisational excellence and is a driving force for business success. This study focused on investigating VWSA Group Service division’s employee talent management process as seen or perceived by employees. The employee attitude and understanding of the 2010 strategy was also evaluated. In achieving this objective a literature review on talent management was conducted and questions formulated which formed part of the survey. The questionnaire was self-administered and sent to the stratified random sample of individuals who were eligible for survey. The main findings of this research are that the 2010 strategy was well received by the employees and that seventy seven percent of the respondents who took part in the study do understand the 2010 strategy and what it is all about. The study also highlighted that employees believe Project 1 in the 2010 strategy will be achieved. Employees were uncertain that compensation and leadership style are variables that influence or promote talent management. From the literature review it is explained that in order for talent management to be effective it must be aligned to organisational strategy. Various recommendations were made, for example conducting of skills gap analysis with a view to identify skills employees need to possess in order to meet the objectives of the 2010 strategy. Another recommendation was the formation of talent pools from which to recruit high talented staff and whose skills will be required to meet the objectives of the organisational strategy. A final point emanating from the study, is that when it comes to talent management and achieving organisational strategy it is not business as usual. Companies need to be aware of brand profiles most desired by highly talented individuals; they also need to be aware of various recruiting strategies as well as acknowledge that different employees are at different levels of the motivational hierarchy.
