- Description: The aim of this study was to investigate the evolution of Vogue magazine’s role as a fashion authority. The methodology of Foucauldian discourse analysis motivated the enquiry into the establishment of Vogue’s fashion authority over time. The corpus of Vogue’s September Point of View editorials between the period of 1960 and 2015 was divided into four epochs using the period of editorship held by the four editors (Jessica Daves, Diana Vreeland, Grace Mirabella and Anna Wintour). Features of Vogue’s discourse were identified in literature and applied to the corpus using a concurrent embedded mixed methods approach, employing the quantitative and qualitative methods of content and discourse analysis respectively. The analysis suggested that Vogue maintained fashion authority through changing its discourse to suit changes occurring in the field of fashion and the evolving needs and perspectives of the reader. Changes in the way Vogue presents itself; addresses the reader; attributes material, commercial, or intellectual features to fashion; addresses concepts of time and novelty; and negotiates the relationship between American fashion and European or global fashion were the focus of the analysis. The findings conceptualise Vogue’s voice as evolving through the four roles of reporting, fictionalizing, translating and connecting fashion. The shift in Vogue’s voice suggests that the conceptualization of fashion in the publication shifts towards a more abstract and general conception of fashion and reader. The results suggest that Vogue’s fashion discourse shifts from a focus on the specific material features of fashion and craft and the conception of fashion as news and Vogue as a reporter towards a focus on the more abstract, general intellectual and commercial properties of fashion and the conception of fashion as commerce promoting Vogue’s role as a facilitating platform.

The study observed problems in ecosystem functioning, particularly in regard to the flora and fauna, and there was extensive destruction of the aesthetic beauty of the local landscape. In addition, the study indicated that people and livestock drowned in the deep trenches that were not rehabilitated following illegal sand mining practise that was migrating along the river. Furthermore, illegal sand mining was linked with an increase in poverty and prostitution, as well as the destruction of the infrastructure in the nearby communities. Moreover, community conflicts arose from the differing perceptions on the existence of illegal sand mining in these communities. To curb illegal sand mining, the study recommends that the current legislation on the extraction of mineral commodities in South Africa should be stringently and effectively enforced. The research further recommends that community policing forums should be established and work closely with law enforcement agencies to deal with illegal sand mining activities. - Description: Sagittaria platyphylla (Engelm.) J.G.Sm. (Alismataceae) is an invasive, aquatic macrophyte originating in the southern United States of America. In South Africa, the plant was first detected in Krantzkloof Nature Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal Province in 2008, and due to its known impact in other countries, it was listed as a Category 1a invader species under the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act 2004 (NEM:BA). This invasive plant has proved difficult to manage due to its varied growth forms and reproductive strategies, such as prolific seed and below ground tuber production. Due to the limitations of conventional control mechanisms, biological control is currently being considered as a potential control option. The tuber feeding weevil Listronotus frontalis LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) has been identified as a candidate biological control agent for this invasive species. The aims of this study were twofold; to firstly determine the importance of tubers to S. platyphylla populations growing in South Africa; and secondly, to determine the biology and suitability of L. frontalis, a tuber feeder, as a candidate biological control agent. Surveys of S. platyphylla populations in South Africa showed that tubers were found in all sampled sites, except for Krantzkloof Nature reserve in KwaZulu-Natal Province. The highest number of tubers was 97.75 ± 10.62 (SE) m-2 recorded at Jonkershoek in the Western Cape Province. Monthly sampling from two sites in the Eastern Cape Province, the Makana Botanical Gardens and Maden Dam showed that neither season nor water depth affected tuber production. However, the mean number of tubers as well as mass of tubers sampled, were consistently higher (F(1,179) = 20.9542, P < 0.0001) and heavier (F(1, 857) = 585.7293, P < 0.0001) at the Botanical Gardens than at Maden Dam, respectively. The study showed that tubers are an important life stage of S. platyphylla populations and may vary in size and abundance between and within sites. The tuber feeding weevil was shown to develop from egg to ovipositing adult within just over 40 days. Females were recorded to lay up to 48 eggs within a period of one week. Impact studies showed that adult feeding led to a reduction in all but one of the 11 measured plant growth and developmental measurements, including a reduction in the mean mass of the above-ground plant material (F(2,2743) = 12.05, P = 0.002) as well as a reduction in size and abundance of tubers (F(2,58.47) = 9.756, P = 0.0006) and stolons(F(14.943) = 8.7577, P = 0.003). These results are encouraging and suggest that if the insect is released in South Africa, it may prove to be a valuable biocontrol agent. - Description: The field of our study is Francophone African Literature and this thesis explores the themes of marginality and grief both experienced by Princess Akissi in The Blind Kingdom and Princess Pokou in Queen Pokou (2004) during their rise to power in their respective kingdoms. The two novels written by Véronique Tadjo from Ivory Coast, are subjected to thematic analysis because they are both based on similar storylines - that of conflict and rivalry within kingdoms resulting in the exile of the two princesses. One of the novels is set in a pre-colonial period while the other is set in a postcolonial era. Queen Pokou, winner of the 2005 Grand Prix Littéraire d’Afrique Noire (which is the most distinguished prize in Francophone African literature), is a retelling of the founding myths of the Baoulé people of Ivory Coast. In her literary texts, Tadjo transgresses the original legend and her reconstruction of this legend is significant because it challenges the ritual sacrifice made by Princess Pokou in order to free her people and to become queen. In The Blind Kingdom (1990), Tadjo highlights the corruption and injustice of the ruling elite. Space is used to reinforce the King’s domination thus a revolution is necessary to overthrow the exploitative power structures in place. The revolution that takes place relies heavily on the participation of Karim and especially on Princess Akissi who chooses to rebel against her father, King Ato IV in order to stop injustice. This thematic analysis, supported by semiotic theory, aims to establish and demonstrate the relationship between marginality of the two princesses, in particular, and their subsequent grief. It sheds light on the reasons for their exclusion from power as well as the nature of the conflicts that occur as they rise to power. The study postulates that certain myths and images are evoked by the novelist to symbolise the exclusion of the two princesses from power.

Educators and school governing bodies’ perceptions on rationalisation and redeployment in the Alfred-Nzo West District: advancing an argument for policy change

- Description: The focus of this study was to report on the exploration of educators and school governing body members’ perceptions on the aspects of rationalisation and redeployment in the Alfred Nzo West District. In 1996 the Department introduced a policy on rationalisation and redeployment of teachers, based on Resolution 3 of the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) with the aim of phasing in a learner – teacher ratio of 40:1 in primary schools and 35:1 in high schools. A case study design using a qualitative approach was adopted for the study. Data was gathered from ten purposively selected participants using semi-structured interviews, observations and documents reviews. A thematic approach was followed for the data analysis of this study. The overall findings of the study showed that the Department of Education followed a top-down approach with no interactive communication and consultation with school stakeholders during the implementation process of this policy. Participants cast doubt on principals’ understanding when implementing this policy, which inevitably leads to low morale, anxiety and uncertainty amongst teachers. It appears that this policy has not been internalized as an instrument to promote quality and access to schools, as it has been argued that the implementation thereof has resulted in lack of physical and human resources which is compromising the quality of teaching and learning. Moreover, participants were ambivalent about rationalisation and redeployment as an enabler and as a barrier to improvement as some participants view it as an alternative to retrenchment and a cost saving measure for the Department of Education. Given the aforementioned findings, it can be concluded that if the aims of rationalisation and redeployment are to be achieved, there is a need for policy change

- Description: The focus of this study was to report on the exploration of educators and school governing body members’ perceptions on the aspects of rationalisation and redeployment in the Alfred Nzo West District. In 1996 the Department introduced a policy on rationalisation and redeployment of teachers, based on Resolution 3 of the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) with the aim of phasing in a learner – teacher ratio of 40:1 in primary schools and 35:1 in high schools. A case study design using a qualitative approach was adopted for the study. Data was gathered from ten purposively selected participants using semi-structured interviews, observations and documents reviews. A thematic approach was followed for the data analysis of this study. The overall findings of the study showed that the Department of Education followed a top-down approach with no interactive communication and consultation with school stakeholders during the implementation process of this policy. Participants cast doubt on principals’ understanding when implementing this policy, which inevitably leads to low morale, anxiety and uncertainty amongst teachers. It appears that this policy has not been internalized as an instrument to promote quality and access to schools, as it has been argued that the implementation thereof has resulted in lack of physical and human resources which is compromising the quality of teaching and learning. Moreover, participants were ambivalent about rationalisation and redeployment as an enabler and as a barrier to improvement as some participants view it as an alternative to retrenchment and a cost saving measure for the Department of Education. Given the aforementioned findings, it can be concluded that if the aims of rationalisation and redeployment are to be achieved, there is a need for policy change
