An investigation into strategies which enable South African women to break through the glass ceiling
- Authors: Peens, Maritha
- Date: 2003
- Subjects: Women executives -- South Africa , Women employees -- Promotions -- South Africa , Sex discrimination in employement -- South Africa , Sex discrimination against women -- South Africa
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Masters , MBA
- Identifier: vital:10898 , http://hdl.handle.net/10948/135 , Women executives -- South Africa , Women employees -- Promotions -- South Africa , Sex discrimination in employement -- South Africa , Sex discrimination against women -- South Africa
- Description: The objective of this study was to identify the strategies (personal and organisational) that would enable South African women to break through the glass ceiling. A questionaire was designed based on the strategies found in a literature study on the topic and used to gather inputs from executive women in South Africa. A combination of snowball and self-selection sampling was used. The questionaire was sent to 138 potential respondents, mostly by means of electronic mail. Of the 47 completed questionairs returned, 44 could be used. These were processed and anaylsed using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and the STATISTICA Version 6 software. In generaL, support was found for personal strategies pertaining to career management, networking (especially the relationship building activities), the reconciliation of home and work responsibilities with the emphasis on building a support system, education, business and organisational insught, skills development and increased input, but not for the assimilation of masculine attributes. Networking opportunities and education, training and development activities were regarded as the organisational strategies with the strongest impact on career progress. The literature was confirmed regarding top management support, an organisational culture conducive to women's advancement, mentorship programmes and a few career development initiatives. Although more than half of the respondents had been exposed to employment equity and affirmative action programmes, they were perceived to have only little to moderate impact on career progress. This was also the case with diversity management programmes. Flexible work arrangements, career adaptation schemes and childcare facilities and programmes were seen as having had little impact on the respondents' career advancement. Only a few of the organisational practices to support women balancing family and work responsibilities were utilised by the respondents' employers. Respondents perceived personal strategies as having greater value than organisational strategies in their progress to executive levels.

Calibration and wide field imaging with PAPER: a catalogue of compact sources
- Authors: Philip, Liju
- Date: 2016
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Masters , MSc
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/2397 , vital:20285
- Description: Observations of the redshifted 21 cm HI line promise to be a formidable tool for cosmology, allowing the investigation of the end of the so-called dark ages, when the first galaxies formed, and the subsequent Epoch of Reionization when the intergalactic medium transitioned from neutral to ionized. Such observations are plagued by foreground emission which is a few orders of magnitude brighter than the 21 cm line. In this thesis I analyzed data from the Donald C. Backer Precision Array for Probing the Epoch of Reionization (PAPER) in order to improve the characterization of the extragalactic foreground component. I derived a catalogue of unresolved radio sources down to a 5 Jy flux density limit at 150 MHz and derived their spectral index distribution using literature data at 408 MHz. I implemented advanced techniques to calibrate radio interferometric data that led to a few percent accuracy on the flux density scale of the derived catalogue. This work, therefore, represents a further step towards creating an accurate, global sky model that is crucial to improve calibration of Epoch of Reionization observations.

On the ideals and semimodules of commutative semirings

- Language: English
- Type: Master's theses , text
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10948/52782 , vital:44026
- Description: Semirings are a generalisation of rings where additive inverses need not exist. In this dissertation, we focus on results of commutative semirings with non-zero identity. Many results that we study are analogous to results from commutative rings with non-zero identity. Properties which are unique to semirings are also investigated, such as semirings where all elements are additively idempotent. The notion of ideals is examined in the context of a semiring. Specifically, prime ideals, maximal ideals, k-ideals and partitioning ideals of semirings are considered. Additionally, the module over a ring is generalised to a semimodule over a semiring. The emphasis is on prime subsemimodules and multiplication semimodules. Lastly, invertible ideals of semirings are examined. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, School of Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and Statistics, 2021

Application of reverse-flow micellar electrokinetic chromatography for the simultaneous determination of flavonols and terpene trilactones in Ginkgo biloba dosage forms
- Dubber, Mary-Jean, Kanfer, Isadore
- Authors: Dubber, Mary-Jean , Kanfer, Isadore
- Date: 2006
- Language: English
- Type: text , Article
- Identifier: vital:6357 , http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006049
- Description:
A reverse-flow micellar electrokinetic chromatographic (RF-MEKC) method was developed for the simultaneous qualitative determination of 10 components consisting of the flavonol glycosides, rutin and quercitrin, the flavonol aglycones, isorhamnetin, kaempferol and quercetin, the terpene trilactones, ginkgolides A, B, C and J and the sesquiterpene, bilobalide. This method was used to fingerprint Ginkgo biloba solid oral dosage forms and validated for the quantitation of the marker compounds, rutin and quercetin in some commercial products. In addition to the usual variables, the influence of some essential background electrolyte (BGE) components such as sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and
-cyclodextrin concentrations were investigated. A polyimide fused-silica square capillary column (75 μm I.D. × 360 μm O.D.) with a total length of 60.0 cm and effective length of 45.0 cm was used for the separation. The final BGE consisted of 20 mM phosphoric acid, 40 mM SDS and 12 mM -cyclodextrin (pH 2.2) using reverse polarity with a voltage of −17.5 kV. Samples were injected electrokinetically at −5 kV for 3 s for the qualitative analysis and hydrodynamically at 20 mbar for 0.6 s for the quantitative assay. The total run time was 22 min and the limits of detection were 3.13 μg/ml and 1.88 μg/ml for rutin and quercetin, respectively. Fingerprint profiles of the solid oral dosage forms and the results of the quantitative analysis indicated that there were major discrepancies in the marker content between products and illustrates the value of this method for use as a procedure to assess product quality of commercially available Ginkgo biloba products. - Full Text:

- Description: The spectroscopic and nonlinear optical properties of the positional isomers of metal free 4α-(4-tert-butylphenoxy) phthalocyanine are presented. Second order nonlinear polarizability (β), imaginary hyperpolarizability (Im(γ)) and imaginary susceptibility (Im[χ(3)]) values were determined for the four positional isomers. The measured β values of the four isomers displayed the following trend, C4h (34.0 × 10−5 m MW−1) > D2h (28.8 × 10−5 m MW−1) > C2v (22.8 × 10−5 m MW−1) > Cs (13.7 × 10−5 m MW−1).

Tangentially symplectic foliations
- Authors: Remsing, Claudiu Cristian
- Date: 1994
- Subjects: Geometry Problems, exercises, etc Geometry, Differential Symplectic manifolds Poisson manifolds Foliations (Mathematics)
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Doctoral , PhD
- Identifier: vital:5419 , http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1005233
- Description: This thesis is concerned principally with tangential geometry and the applications of these concepts to tangentially symplectic foliations. The subject of tangential geometry is still at an elementary stage. The author here systematises current concepts and results and extends them, leading to the definition of vertical connections and vertical G-structures. Tangentially symplectic foliations are then characterised in terms of vertical symplectic forms. Some significant particular cases are discussed.
