- Description: This thesis expands on primary field research conducted for my MMus degree. Undertaken in the Saharaui refugee camps of southern Algeria (2004-2005) that research - based on ethnographic data and the analysis of Saharaui music, known as Haul ¹- focussed on the musical system, the social context of musical performance and the music culture in Saharaui refugee camps. This doctoral research examines Saharaui Haul music as practised in Spain and is particularly focussed on its entry, since 1998, into the global market by way of the World Music label, Nubenegra records. The encounter between Saharaui musicians and Nubenegra records has created a new type of Saharaui Haul which is different to that played in the refugee camps. This phenomenon has emerged as a result of western music producers compelling Saharaui musicians to introduce musical changes so that both parties may be considered as musical agents occupying different positions on a continuum of tradition and change. Nubenegra undertook the commodification of Saharaui music and disseminated it from the camps to the rest of the world. A musical and social analysis of the relationship between Nubenegra and Saharaui musicians living in Spain will form the basis of the research in this thesis. In particular, Mariem Hassan is an example of a musician who had her music disseminated through the relationship with Nubenegra and she is promoted as the music ambassador of the Western Sahara. I collaborated with her as a composer and performer on her last album, El Aaiun egdat (Aaiun in fire), in 2012² and gained first hand insight into the relationship between Mariem and Nubenegra. This thesis reflects on this relationship and my role in facilitating this encounter.

- Description: In a period of rapidly increasing energy demand, the exploitation of abundantly available solar energy is imperative. Temperate climates like South Africa show good potential for utilizing solar-driven technologies such as solar water heaters. These systems offer an attractive alternative over conventional water geysers as a means to supply hot water for residential use. In South Africa, the solar water heater industry is growing rapidly as the government offers incentives manufactures and consumers. This necessitates the determination of performance of these systems through experimental analysis as well as performance prediction. This study evaluated the summer and winter performance of a flat plate, thermosyphon solar water heater under climatic conditions encountered in Alice, South Africa by considering the collector outlet temperature. The performance and weather data obtained were used to develop a multi linear regression (MLR) model for each season. MLR is a simple and easily applicable modelling approach which uses a set of input and output data to determine the model coefficients of a linear relation of two or more variables. The collector outlet temperature was correlated with solar radiation, ambient temperature, relative humidity, and collector inlet temperature since these variables have a direct impact on the collector temperature rise. Results from the performance showed that the collector performs well, attaining temperatures up to 87.2oC during the summer season and 70oC during winter season. The summer and winter percentage mean absolute error for the whole monitoring period were 4.07 percent and 6.2 percent respectively which indicate that MLR can be successfully applied to predict collector outlet temperatures in both seasons.

- Description: In a period of rapidly increasing energy demand, the exploitation of abundantly available solar energy is imperative. Temperate climates like South Africa show good potential for utilizing solar-driven technologies such as solar water heaters. These systems offer an attractive alternative over conventional water geysers as a means to supply hot water for residential use. In South Africa, the solar water heater industry is growing rapidly as the government offers incentives manufactures and consumers. This necessitates the determination of performance of these systems through experimental analysis as well as performance prediction. This study evaluated the summer and winter performance of a flat plate, thermosyphon solar water heater under climatic conditions encountered in Alice, South Africa by considering the collector outlet temperature. The performance and weather data obtained were used to develop a multi linear regression (MLR) model for each season. Further, no global standardised protocol exists for the rapid assessment of roadkill or the most economical and efficient approach for assessing roadkill rates. Using vehicle field trials, the reliability of detecting artificially deployed roadkill was assessed. Roadkill detection rates decreased significantly at speeds >50 km/h and were also significantly influenced by light conditions (i.e. detection success was greater when the sun was high) and the position of the roadkill on the road (i.e. smaller roadkill on verges were often missed). These results suggest that roadkill sampling was most effective between 1.5 hours after dawn and 1.5 hours before dusk and that driving at slower speeds (<50 km.h⁻ₑ) was required to detect roadkill. This protocol was implemented across three ecological seasons on a 100 km paved road and a 20 km unpaved road in the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area, Limpopo Province, South Africa. Driven daily over a 120-day period (three periods consisting each of 40 days), a total of 1,027 roadkill were recorded. These comprised 162 species from all terrestrial vertebrate groups with birds being the most commonly encountered roadkill (50% of all incidents). A series of mitigation measures are proposed to reduce the impacts of roads on wildlife in South Africa. These mitigation measures highlight the need to address the balance between the development of a country’s transport infrastructure and the conservation of its fauna. Additionally, P. semiclara produces an encounter call that is involved in courtship and also in spacing males within choruses. Males generally call from exposed trunks and branches within the understory but clear of the undergrowth and fight with other males that call within about 50 cm of them. Choruses sing sporadically throughout the day but focus most of their calling activity into half-hour bouts at dawn and dusk. Body size and ambient temperature had no significant effect on spectral or temporal characteristics of the calling song. Body temperature measurements indicate that P. semiclara thermoregulates endothermically, with a body temperature of more than 22 °C above ambient temperature being measured during calling activity at dusk. Such endothermy provides an advantage to the cicadas by allowing them to call during crepuscular hours when atmospheric conditions are most optimal for acoustic communication and predation risks are minimal. Coincidentally, endogenously regulating body temperature allows the temporal characteristics of the call to be unaffected by ambient temperature changes.

However, evaluations in South Africa such as the Annual National Assessments (ANAs) and the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) (2006) show that reading achievement in the Foundation Phase is low, especially for children learning with African languages as their home language. This thesis examines pacing and sequencing in three Grade 1 literacy classes where isiXhosa is the language of learning and teaching (LOLT). The research took the form of a case study, focusing on the teachers’ classroom practice and how they understand their practice. Documents related to reading development in the Foundation Phase are analysed with regard to pacing and sequencing, examining how the curriculum frames literacy for teachers in the Foundation Phase. The teachers’ understanding in relation to their social context is also an important part of this research. In the thesis the way in which the teachers sequence and pace learning is analysed, drawing on Bernstein’s notions of internal and external framing, and Bourdieu’s notion of the habitus. The intended curriculum and the implemented curriculum are then compared. The results confirm that in low socio‐economic status (SES) schools, the level of poverty has an impact on teaching practice. The results also show that pacing and sequencing are reliant on the degree of planning amongst teachers. The level of development amongst learners also plays a role in how teachers organise their practice in order to differentiate the teaching of reading for all learners. The understanding that teachers have about their teaching practice are layered and influenced by their experiences, history and memories as teachers. The thesis concludes that there is a need to develop teachers’ understanding of planning and organising the teaching of reading, especially when the learners are from poor communities and do not get support in the home. In order for teachers to improve their practice, it is important for them to have the opportunity to reflect on and understand their practice.

The radio learning programmes have been developed to provide teachers with an effective interactive set of materials to assist their learners in the acquisition of English. These audio materials also provide teachers with opportunities to be creative and responsive to their learners' specific needs. The feedback strategies described in this study are the teachers' use of their learners' mother tongue, correction oflearner error, and use of praise and encouragement during the three Teacher-Led Activity (TLA) segments of the radio programmes. These TLAs give teachers approximately 12 minutes per lesson during which they are called on to manage the materials according to their learners' specific needs. The TLAs are specifically designed to give learners the opportunity to use and respond to English in particular contexts. This study examines three teachers' feedback to their learners in order to find out what kind of feedback has been made. An attempt has also been made to analyse the nature of the feedback. It was found, from the description and analysis of the teachers' feedback, that when teachers used their learners' mother tongue this was more often used to translate words or phrases which were part of the radio narrator's instructions to the learners and these translations were then repeated in English. Teachers corrected very few learner errors. The most common form of correction was to model the correct form and have the learners repeat this. In spite of claiming that correction of errors was important and all three teachers said they did correct their learners' errors, there was very little evidence of this practice in the sample described in this study. The use of praise and encouragement was a strategy that all three teachers claimed they practised but almost no instances of the use of praise were described. The three teachers used only the word "good" to praise any of their learners' efforts and, in fact, all three used this only twice in each of the three lessons described in this study. In terms of language learning a number of factors have been compared. Some of these include teachers' repetition oflearners' answers and their correction oflearner responses by modelling. They were also observed allowing a variety of learner response as well as ensuring a number of individual learners were able to respond. These factors appear to have enhanced the language learning in the classrooms. However, it was also observed that the teachers needed more support in order to develop more explicit strategies to use their learners' mother tongue, to praise learners and to correct learner error purposefully in their classroom practice. There is a need for guidance to be given teachers in the development and use of open-ended questions and strategies which could encourage the development of higher order language skills in their learners. These findings will influence OLSET's teacher development curriculum. It is envisaged that strategies and activities designed to provide teachers with opportunities to reflect on their own practice with regard to the feedback they provide will be incorporated into the workshops and teacher support systems provided by OLSET's teacher development team.

Methods: The study employed a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional survey research design approach similar to a study done by Parisi et al. (2019, p.1–14) on intestinal schistosomiasis. A structured, closed-ended, self-administered, Likert-scale questionnaire was used to collect data from 458 learners in Grades 4 to 7 and aged from 9 to 16 years. Data on retrospective prevalence was obtained from the District Health Information System (DHIS) and the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) within the Nelson Mandela Bay. The data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The leaners’ overall knowledge and attitudes towards schistosomiasis were poor based on the overall low-knowledge scores, which was 46% in the lowest category from 0-19 points. Urinary schistosomiasis infections within the study area showed an increase from the years 2014 to 2017; but declined in the year 2018. Additionally, the males 99 (24%) had a higher prevalence compared to the females 6 (1%) (p=<0.0005, V= 0.33 medium). The highest rate of disease infections was found in individuals between the ages of 10 and 19 years (p=<0.0005, V=0.43 medium). Conclusion: In conclusion, the researcher found that the overall knowledge and attitudes towards schistosomiasis among the learners were poor. The study further revealed that the rate of urinary schistosomiasis infections within the study area had increased from the years 2014 to 2017; but had declined in the year 2018. The data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The leaners’ overall knowledge and attitudes towards schistosomiasis were poor based on the overall low-knowledge scores, which was 46% in the lowest category from 0-19 points. Urinary schistosomiasis infections within the study area showed an increase from the years 2014 to 2017; but declined in the year 2018. Additionally, the males 99 (24%) had a higher prevalence compared to the females 6 (1%) (p=<0.0005, V= 0.33 medium). The highest rate of disease infections was found in individuals between the ages of 10 and 19 years (p=<0.0005, V=0.43 medium). Conclusion: In conclusion, the researcher found that the overall knowledge and attitudes towards schistosomiasis among the learners were poor. The study further revealed that the rate of urinary schistosomiasis infections within the study area had increased from the years 2014 to 2017; but had declined in the year 2018.
