- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Masters , MAgric
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10353/13471 , vital:39672
- Description: This study sought to determine the seasonal variations in tick loads, coat characteristics, temperature-humidity index and blood metabolite profiles of Boran cows reared in arid rangelands of South Africa. A total of 20 Boran cows of different age groups were used in this study. Tick counts, hair length, coat score, average temperature and relative humidity readings were measured twice (beginning and end) in each season (post-rainy, cold-dry, hot-dry, hot-wet). Blood samples were taken seasonally (beginning and end of the season) for the analysis of creatine kinase (CK) activity and haematological parameters (HP). Ticks were observed and counted from different anatomical sites, namely anterior (neck, head, ears, and around eyes), ventral (belly, udder, and limbs) and posterior (back and under the tail). The tick species observed from the Boran cows were Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi (34.58percent), Amblyomma hebreaum (43.35percent), Rhipicephalus simus (4.48percent) and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) decoloratus (17.59percent). Significant differences were observed in tick burdens at various anatomical sites, with posterior position having the highest tick loads during the post-rainy, cold-dry and hot-dry season. While the ventral position recorded the highest tick loads during the hot-wet season. It was also observed that the cattle had significantly long hair lengths during the cold-dry season. Furthermore, coat score and hair length were observed to be negatively (P<0.05) correlated with tick counts, while coat scores were positively (P<0.05) correlated with hair length. Significant differences were observed in CK activity across season, with higher levels during the hot-dry and hot-wet seasons compared to the post-rainy and cold-dry seasons. Boran cows were exposed to a mild stress condition during the hot-dry and hot-wet season when the THI values were high (>70). Seasonal variations had an effect (P<0.05) on some HP (HB, HCT, MCV, MCH, EOS, and BAS). Neutrophils (-0.267) and basophils (0.268) were significantly correlated with THI. In conclusion, the Boran cows were more susceptible to tick loads during the hot seasons. Likewise, the levels of creatine kinase activity and temperature-humidity index were high during the hot-dry and hot-wet season. Therefore, seasonal variations had an effect on tick loads, coat characteristics, temperature-humidity index and blood metabolite profiles of extensively raised Boran cows.

- Description: Effects of pre-slaughter sheep handling and animal-related factors on Creatine Kinase levels and physico-chemical attributes of mutton By Chulayo Amanda Yucca The objective of the study was to determine the effects of pre-slaughter sheep handling and animal-related factors on Creatine kinase (CK) levels and physico-chemical characteristics of mutton from South African sheep breeds. One hundred and seventy-three castrated male sheep from four breeds (15 Dormer, 46 South African Mutton Merino, 77 Dorper and 35 Blackhead Persian) were used. The animals were grouped according to age categories. The grouping was as follows: Group 1 (6 ≤ 8 months), Group 2 (9 ≤ 12 months) and Group 3 (13 ≤ 16 months). Blood samples for CK determination were collected at exanguination using disposable vacutainer tubes. Representative samples of the Muscularis longissimuss thoracis et. lumborum (LTL) muscle were taken for the determination of ultimate pH (pHu), colour (L*-lightness, b*- redness and a*- yellowness), thawing and cooking losses and meat tenderness. Significant (P<0.01) breed effects were observed on CK levels with Dormer having the highest CK values. Significant linear relationships were observed between pre-slaughter condition and CK levels. There were positive correlations between colour coordinates L* and b* (r =+0.22) and between a* and b* (r =+0.63). Cooking loss and Warner Braztler Shear Force (WBSF) values were positively correlated (r =+0.29). The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed a significant variance for CK and between physico-chemical characteristics of mutton. There were no relationships between CK levels and physico-chemical characteristics of mutton. Significant breed and age effects on pHu, L, a*, b*, thaw %, CL and WBSF of mutton were observed. iv It was concluded that, pre-slaughter conditions affect CK levels and physico-chemical characteristics of mutton. However, there were no relationships between CK levels and physico-chemical characteristics of mutton.

- Description: The objective of the study was to determine the effects of pre-slaughter conditions and anima-l related factors on bruising, creatine kinase (CK) and beef quality. Three hundred and twenty one cattle from three breeds (108 Bonsmara, 130 Beefmaster and 83 Brahman) were used in this study. The animals were grouped according to age categories as follows; Group 1(16months), Group 2 (18months) and Group 3 (24 months). Blood samples for CK determination were collected at exsanguisation using disposable vacutainer tubes. The Muscularis longisimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) muscle was used to determine beef colour (L,* a* and b*) and ultimate pH. Significant P (<0.05) breed effects were observed on bruising score and CK levels with Bonsmara breed having the highest percentage (80 percent) of bruising score and higher CK (705.3±80.57) values. The higher CK levels were also in winter season. The effect of breed, sex and age at slaughter on meat quality (pHu, L*, a*, b*) was also observed. There were positive correlations between distance travelled and meat quality, while there was no relationship observed between CK and distance travelled. Therefore, it was concluded that animal related factors had an effect on meat quality and CK levels.

The impact of external shocks on economic performance and policy responses in Zimbabwe

- Description: This study analysed the impact of external shocks on macroeconomic performance and policy responses in Zimbabwe for the period spanning from 2009 to 2016. The study was motivated by the rising global economic vulnerabilities following the global economic and financial crisis experienced between 2007 and 2009. The study was also in response to the concern by the Zimbabwean government that external shocks had become increasingly important in influencing macroeconomic developments in Zimbabwe. In view of the intensifying debate on external shocks, the study, therefore, sought to understand the impact of external shocks on economic performance and policy responses in Zimbabwe. The study contributes to empirical literature by assessing the relative contribution of external shocks in explaining business cycles, the main transmission mechanisms of the macroeconomic shocks in Zimbabwe, the extent to which shocks in Zimbabwe were synchronised with shocks affecting other regional countries and how effective were government policies in mitigating the impact of shocks in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is a fascinating case study given its unique exchange rate arrangements under the multiple currency system. The application of the micro-founded DSGE models in addition to the Structural Vector Autoregressive (SVAR) models is also a novel approach. The results of the DSGE model demonstrated that foreign output shocks and imported inflation were not important in accounting for developments in endogenous variables in Zimbabwe. In addition, the domestic output and inflation did not respond to a domestic monetary policy shock. However, the international commodity price was found to have some bearing on domestic output. Foreign interest rates had a positive effect on domestic interest rates. On the other hand, domestic variables did not respond to domestic interest rate movements. This effectively implies that whilst foreign interest rates influenced domestic interest rates, domestic interest rates did not influence real economic activity. In other words, the transmission mechanism was not from domestic monetary policy to real economic variables. The results of the SVAR model also confirmed the results obtained from the DSGE model. The results from the analysis of the synchronicity of shocks also provided very important information on the dynamics of external shocks and economic performance in Zimbabwe. These results pointed to the fact that although countries in the region experienced similar shocks, economic fluctuations were not synchronised implying that the shocks could be emanating from the domestic sources rather than external sources. The results from the analysis of the role of external shocks in explaining macroeconomic fluctuations in Zimbabwe revealed that domestic factors contribute more to macroeconomic fluctuations in Zimbabwe compared to external variables. The contribution of climatic factors to domestic output fluctuations was, however, found to have a limited or minimal impact on the economy. Regarding the monetary policy effectiveness, the study observed that there was a weak link between interest rates and output and inflation developments in Zimbabwe. The results also suggested a week link between interest rates and money supply in the economy. The results, however, suggested that international oil prices were very important in the domestic price formations, accounting for about 20 percent of the variation. The monetary policy conditional index on the other hand indicated that monetary conditions in the economy did not influence inflation and output developments, implying ineffectiveness of monetary policy. The results from the study demonstrated the fact that although external shocks do affect economic activity in Zimbabwe, domestic factors are more significant in influencing macroeconomic activity. The policy implication of the findings is that there is need to consider the domestic factors, which are more significant compared to the external factors. However, since monetary policy is not effective under the multiple currencies system, fiscal policy is important to deal with external shocks. This will also enable the economy to absorb the impact of external shocks into the economy. The policies should focus more on reducing the over-reliance on primary commodities for exports through diversification of the economy.
