- Description: The two-hour drive from Cape Town to Worcester is long. But it’s not boring. You pass green, open farmlands where cattle graze. Every now and then, you cross a river or a stream. In the distance, the purple mountains frame the blue sky. Bree River High School In the valley surrounded by the Hottentots-Holland mountains, you find Worcester. Just outside the town is Bree River High School. Wilfred Zebedezela is a student there. He throws the shotput. He lives on a farm outside Worcester and he travels for an hour everyday to get to and from school. ‘At school there isn’t a place where I can train with weights, said Wilfred. ‘So I build my muscles by doing farm work. I would like to practice shotput at home, but I can’t because there is only one shotput at school. I can’t practise at school, as there is no teacher to stay behind in the afternoons with me.’ Ruduwaan Visagie is a 200 metre sprinter. ‘We can’t afford things like starting blocks. We ran in the South African Junior Athletics Championships. But some of our athletes almost couldn't take part. We didn’t have starting blocks. Fortunately, we managed to borrow some.’

- Description: This psychobiography on the life of Karen Horney is an exploratory-descriptive study that aims to explore and describe Horney's life structure development according to Daniel Levinson's (1996) theory of adult development. The method of research uses a qualitative single-case research design that studies her life over her entire lifespan and highlights the individual characteristics of Horney in a holistic manner within her socio-historical context. A purposive sampling procedure was used to select Karen Horney as the subject of the research and only published data was analyzed in the research. Multiple sources of data are used to obtain the information in this research, including an autobiography and three biographies written by three different authors. This data is organized according to the temporal sequence of her lifespan and the developmental periods and time frame of Levinson's theory. Horney's life is described and explored to highlight those areas of her life that conform to the developmental theory and those aspects of her life that are not included in the theoretical constructs of Levinson 's theory. By exploring the significant relationships that Horney developed throughout her life with family, friends, work colleagues, community and religious affiliations, and the important issues in her development, this study verifies Levinson's theory by corroborating his conceptualisation of adult development as a process of sequential stages divided into four main eras of development, linked by three periods of transition. A shortcoming of Levinson's theory relates to his omission of self-esteem issues and religious concerns as relevant factors experienced during the era of pre-adulthood and spiritual concerns during the era of late adulthood.

- Description: Photography has been used to record and document periods in time, which Wells (2001:19) acknowledges by stating that, “…photographs are records and documents which pin down the changing world of appearance”. Richard Avedon and Irving Penn made a significant contribution to fashion photography during the 1950s but this has seldom been explored in a scholarly way. By defining the characteristics of Avedon and Penn’s work, a possible understanding of their influence on contemporary fashion photographers, Matthew Rolston and Steven Meisel may be determined and so expand on the understanding of the contribution of Avedon and Penn to contemporary fashion photography. Avedon, Penn, Rolston and Meisel’s fashion photographs will be visually analysed to show the similarities and the relevance of 1950s fashion photography to contemporary fashion photography. Paul Martin Lester’s (2003) method of visual analysis will be used as the basis for this analysis. - Description: Background/Objective: The most recent versions of the two main mental disorders classifications—the World Health Organization's ICD-11 and the American Psychiatric Association's DSM–5—differ substantially in their diagnostic categories related to transgender identity. ICD-11 gender incongruence (GI), in contrast to DSM-5 gender dysphoria (GD), is explicitly not a mental disorder; neither distress nor dysfunction is a required feature. The objective was compared ICD-11 and DSM-5 diagnostic requirements in terms of their sensitivity, specificity, discriminability and ability to predict the use of gender-affirming medical procedures. Method: A total of 649 of transgender adults in six countries completed a retrospective structured interview. Results: Using ROC analysis, sensitivity of the diagnostic requirements was equivalent for both systems, but ICD-11 showed greater specificity than DSM-5. Regression analyses indicated that history of hormones and/or surgery was predicted by variables that are an intrinsic aspect of GI/GD more than by distress and dysfunction. IRT analyses showed that the ICD-11 diagnostic formulation was more parsimonious and contained more information about caseness than the DSM-5 model. Conclusions: This study supports the ICD-11 position that GI/GD is not a mental disorder; additional diagnostic requirements of distress and/or dysfunction in DSM-5 reduce the predictive power of the diagnostic model.
