A COP optimized control system for a CO₂ based automotive A/C-system
- Authors: Rapp, Tobias
- Date: 2007
- Subjects: Automobiles -- Air conditioning , Motor vehicles -- Automatic control
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Masters , MTech
- Identifier: vital:9624 , http://hdl.handle.net/10948/773 , Automobiles -- Air conditioning , Motor vehicles -- Automatic control
- Description: In the last few years carbon dioxide received increasing attention as a possible replacement for fluorocarbon-based refrigerants used within present automotive A/C system technology. R-134a is harmless to the ozone layer but the greenhouse effect is more than 1300 times higher than that of an equivalent amount of CO2. Alternative refrigerants are natural gasses such as propane and butane, however these gasses are considered explosive. With many objections raised it appears if CO2 will be the future refrigrant for automotive use. One concern with R-744 is its high operating pressure and suction/discharge pressure difference when compared to common refrigeration processes. A major problem with the CO2 cycle is the loss of effciency at high ambient temperatures. With a COP optimized control system for the expansion value based on pressure, temperature and mass flow of the refrigerant, an effective A/C system for CO2 could be deleloped. This resrach offers basic knowledge of refrigerant cycles and gives an overall view of the refrigerant change-over problem. With the results obtained from the experimental work a better understanding of the CO2 cycle and a better understanding towards effective A/C systems have been realized.

Managing personal archives in specialised repositories: a case study of Phillip Valentine Tobias collection(s) at the university of the Witwatersrand
- Authors: Marima, Elizabeth Nakai
- Date: 2019
- Subjects: Archives management Institutional repositories
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Masters , M LIS
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10353/11473 , vital:39075
- Description: Personal archives are noncurrent records created by individuals that are selected and kept for their enduring value. They are a record of the past and stand as evidence of what transpired. They make part of repository holdings together with public archives in organisational repositories. Public archives document transactions, statutes, procedures, and regulations. Personal archives contain the documentation of individual lives, emotions, values, experiences and human personality. They seek to reflect the character of the individual who created them. Management of personal archives in repositories refers to their acquisition, collection, arrangement, description, preservation, conservation, creation if access and use. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to investigate the managing of personal archives in specialized repositories: A case study of Phillip Valentine Tobias Collection(s) at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. The study sought to investigate the legal framework that regulates managing of personal archives and the experiences, perceptions and expectations of people managing the personal archives. Furthermore, the study sought to identify strategies of improving the management of personal archives at University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. The study was motivated by the archival theory that conceptualizes grouping of records together for their content and contextual value as evidence with the aim of restating the past. The theory further defines personal archives as records of continued value created by an individual which accumulated naturally, impartially and without prejudice in order to accurately witness the past. The study used a qualitative methodology and was guided by the interpretivist research paradigm. Data was collected using open-ended questions to conduct semi-structured interviews. To complement data, a document analysis, focus group and casual observation were also used. The site of study was University of the Witwatersrand. The total population constituted 41 staff members working in six special repositories with the Phillip Tobias collections at University of the Witwatersrand. The sample size was 25 staff members working in three special repositories. The qualitative data was reported verbartim and the Constant Comparative method was used for data analysis. The findings indicated challenges to the archival theory as the contextual grouping of personal archives was distorted. The study also showed that the archives were xv mismanaged due to framework irregularities, lack of top management support and limited resources. The major resources that were limited were infrastructure, archival ICT systems, human resources and training needs. From the interviews, the research identified strategies of improving the management of personal archives. The study recommended that the university benchmark for archival support strategies and to also engage in existence justification initiatives to harness top management’s attention towards the archive. Out of the identified strategies, the study suggested a tailor made strategy, which combined aspects of each strategy in order to avoid associated challenges.

- Description: My stories are set around the themes of family, animals and outer space -- which leads to other themes like religion, loneliness, romance, eating animals, growing up and longing for the past. Most of the stories have non-linear structures. Some use gradual shiftings of narrator voice; in others the narrative is flat, lacking plot. I favour repetition over plot-based climaxes to create coherency and narrative flow. I also favour free indirect discourse over dialogue or description as a means to characterize.

Some aspects of the mission policy and practice of the Church of the Province of South Africa in Ovamboland, 1924-1960
- Authors: Mallory, Charles Shannon
- Date: 1971
- Subjects: Church of the Province of Southern Africa -- Namibia -- Owambo
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Masters , MA
- Identifier: vital:1232 , http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1007312 , Church of the Province of Southern Africa -- Namibia -- Owambo
- Description: This thesis is a study that was originally inspired by the question, "What does it mean to be a Christian in rural Africa today?" While the Church needs to ask this question everywhere in the world, from experience the writer believes it is especially germane to the non-Western cultures of Africa and Asia. That experience is drawn from eight years' work among the Kwanyama tribe of Ovambos in the Ovamboland Anglican Mission. Hence, this study is confined to one rural African tribe as it came under 46 years' influence of one Christian denomination.

An assessment of the role of the Speaker in the management of the National Assembly: the case of a democratic South Africa
- Authors: Lunyawo, Sipho
- Date: 2022-12
- Subjects: Legislative bodies -- South Africa -- Presiding officers , Mediation -- South Africa
- Language: English
- Type: Master's theses , text
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10353/26742 , vital:65976
- Description: This study interrogates the role of the Speaker in the management of the National Assembly in post-apartheid South Africa. The major focus is on the tenure of the fifth Speaker which was marked with widespread parliament disruptions largely orchestrated by opposition parties. The research employed a qualitative secondary data methodology in which data was collected from secondary sources such as government documents and newspapers. Content analysis and critical discourse analysis were used to analyze data. The Study found that the Speaker plays a fundamental role in the management of the National Assembly. Nevertheless, the study also established that there are numerous challenges faced by the Speaker in the management of the National Assembly. The challenges include mediating the chaos and conflicts among members. The study also established the nature and causes of chaos in the House as well as the efforts put in place by the Speaker to encourage fair debate among MPs. The study concludes that the role of the Speaker in monitoring and regulating the House is crucial in ensuring that there is order in the House at any given time. This is also because the Speaker plays a fundamental role as the Peacekeeper of the House and this emanates from the Speaker’s role in the management of the House. Based on the findings and conclusions of the Study, three recommendations were put forward and these are; embracing a system where the Speaker is independent, introducing hefty penalties against deliberate misconduct, and the use of previous unfavorable incidents to amend the rules of the House. , Thesis (MPA) -- Faculty of Management and Commerce, 2022

Take my word for it: a new approach to the problem of sincerity in the epistemology of testimony

- Description: The epistemological problem of sincerity in testimony is often approached in the following way: We, as a matter of fact, accept utterances as sincere. We do so in the face of knowledge that people lie and deceive, and yet we still count these beliefs as good beliefs. Therefore there must be some reason or argument that we can cite in order to justify our acceptance of the sincerity of the speaker. In this thesis I will argue, contra this, that there is no reason, per se, that justifies our of a speakers sincerity: this is because recognition of the obligation to accept the sincerity is a necessary condition on the possibility of communication and interpretation. In the first three of the thesis I will argue against three of the main approaches to the problem by focusing on what I believe to be the strongest accounts of each: Elizabeth Fricker's reductionism, Tyler Burge's non-reductionism, and Paul Faulkner's trust account of testimony. In the final chapter I will put forward my positive account. I will argue that it is a constitutive rule of language that a speaker be sincere, and then make the further claim, that it is a constitutive rule of interpretation that the hearer take an utterance as sincere. On my account, successful communication does not just depend on a speaker making sincere utterances, but just as importantly,, on the hearer recognising an obligation to take those utterances as being sincere.
