The concerns about poor reading competencies has mounted into inflammatory statements in articles and popular media nationally, continentally and internationally. Without the ability to read learners are deprived access to pertinent information and knowledge that can assist individuals in lifelong learning. Being a language teacher, the researcher in this study strongly believe that every learner can read appropriately and teachers can assist learners to improve their reading competencies. The purpose of the study was to identify the factors contributing to poor reading competencies of grade 4 learners and to provide recommendations to assist in dealing with poor reading competencies. Qualitative research approach was undertaken to deal with all aspects related to research methodology. The data were collected using research instruments such as observation of six learners from three selected primary schools. The observation was conducted during reading of text by learners in the presence of English teachers. The questionnaires were distributed to eleven teachers offering English in grade 4 as another means of data collection instrument. Major findings of the study revealed that factors affecting reading competencies are hugely emanated from schools, teachers, family background, departmental policy and learners themselves. Despite reading problems exist in schools, there are always positive solutions to bring hope and success to the learners.

As leaders of organisations called schools, where teaching and learning take place, they need to possess particular skills to enable them to effectively deliver on their responsibilities of supporting teaching and learning. This means that a school principal is at the centre of any change that must occur at school level. He/she is expected to create a positive learning space by providing a healthy climate for teaching and learning in the school. However, some secondary schools in the King William’s Town Education District are performing far below the national average when it comes to the Grade 12 results. For this reason, this study sought to explore the views of the school management team members in two such schools on the role of principals as instructional leaders. The case study was premised within the qualitative research approach and the interpretivist paradigm was used as an epistemological base to investigate the views of the school management teams on the role of principals as instructional leaders. Eight school management team members were selected from both schools and the data was collected by means of face-to-face semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis. The data showed that participants had divergent views on how principals play the instructional leadership role. It appeared that principals employed different strategies in supporting teaching and learning in their schools and the focus was on control rather than support. It also emerged from the data that there was a lack of professional support at all levels in the selected schools, and parents were not involved in their children’s academic work. The researcher concludes that there seemed to be no systemic and coherent support strategy focusing on teaching and learning, as there were divergent views on how principals perform their instructional leadership roles. The study therefore recommends that principals be trained on instructional leadership to give them a deeper insight into supporting curriculum implementation in their schools.

Face-to-face in-depth interviews and non-participant observation were used to collect the data. Themes were drawn from the responses of the participants and these were analysed. The study revealed the following factors as challenges facing the teaching and learning of Accounting in secondary schools of the Mthatha education district: Teachers had professional qualifications in teaching, but fewer of them had Accounting as subject of their specialisation. Frequency of workshops was identified as a challenge by interviewed teachers. The study revealed that teachers are unfamiliar with the content to teach, and as a result, they are unable to develop the learner guides. The study found that teachers are using insufficient LTSM to teach Accounting. Instructional strategies used by teachers for teaching and learning of Accounting affected the process of teaching and learning of this subject. Redeployment is a challenge that affects the capacity of schools in the teaching and learning of Accounting. The study also revealed that there is a lack of parental involvement and support in the education of their children, which negatively affects the teaching and learning of Accounting. Limited commitment from teachers and learners was also revealed as one of the challenges in teaching and learning Accounting. The researcher made recommendations towards mitigating the effects of the challenges in teaching and learning of Accounting.

Themes drawn from the re-sponses of the participants and discussed included: unhealthy competition, poor com-munication, poor interpersonal relations, poor leadership styles used in schools, exces-sive teacher workload and the existence of cliques and informal groups resulted into conflict among the secondary school teachers. Democratic and participatory styles were suggested as the best working styles of leadership used in the secondary schools. The effects of conflict on the culture of teaching and learning were: weak team spirit among teachers, less communication, stressed among the teachers, high absenteeism, less col-laboration, less teacher motivation and prolonged decision making processes in the schools. The predominant causes of teacher resistance were also highlighted as: the use of autocratic style by school managers, poor communications, ill and unprofessional treatment of staff by managers, constant curriculum changes and unclear policies in the schools. The recommendations on the factors contributing to conflict among sec-ondary schools in the Mthatha Education District were made.

- Description: Textiles and Clothing programmes in universities worldwide experience numerous challenges in effectively implementing ICT integrated teaching and learning. The aim of this study was to explore how ICT integrated teaching and learning was implemented in Textiles and Clothing programmes at one university of Science and Technology in Zimbabwe, with a view to developing a suitable model to enhance effective implementation. The study was informed by the Activity theory and triangulated by the Technological pedagogical content knowledge framework (TPACK) and the Functionality framework. The study made use of the interpretive research paradigm, the qualitative approach and intrinsic case study design, to generate the necessary data. The participants of the study were purposively and quota sampled from the Textiles and Clothing department of the selected university of Science and Technology, and consisted of seven lecturers, three administrators, two ICT technicians and thirty-two students. Four methods were used to generate data namely in-depth interviews, focus group interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. After coding, data were analysed for content using thematic analysis. The study established that there were no specific ICT hardware and software packages acquired by the universityfor the Textiles and Clothing programmes. Instead, general design related softwares such as CorelDraw, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Mac Paints were used to support the implementation of ICT integrated teaching and learning. The findings of the study further revealed that lecturers lacked thorough technological pedagogical knowledge to apply a variety of ICT in the teaching and learning of students. The study established that there was lack of an effective mechanism for providing monitoring and evaluation as the peer review and evaluation mechanism that was used in the Textiles and Clothing programmes did not identify the specific indicators for the implementation of ICT integrated teaching and learning. Among the conclusions emanating from the findings were that the Textiles and Clothing programmes suffered serious shortage of suitable ICT hardware and subject-specific ICT software applications to facilitate the teaching of practical components thereby compromising the effective implementation of ICT integrated teaching and learning to foster effective skill acquisition in relation to ICT among students. It was also concluded that lecturers were finding difficulties in implementing ICT integrated teaching and learning as they lacked thorough technological-pedagogical-content knowledge and skills that would enable them to select appropriate technological resources and technological pedagogical strategies to teach students appropriate content. The study recommended that the Textiles and Clothing department, through the support of the university, should acquire subject related educational hardware and software like Gerber or Lectra to teach the practical courses of the programmes. The university should organise professional development programmes focussing on TPACK to assist lecturers to develop competences in ICT necessary for implementing ICT integrated teaching and learning. A model was proposed to enhance the effective implementation of ICT integrated teaching and learning into the Textiles and Clothing programmes at the University.

The literature review reflects theories concerning the managerial leadership styles of school principals for school effectiveness. In order to attain the aims and objectives of the study, the researcher used the qualitative research method, both in collecting and analyzing the data. The case study design was used to describe and access the phenomenon and the purposive sampling method was used to select (6) secondary school principals. An open ended interview schedule was used for the face-to-face in-depth interviews on the managerial leadership styles of school principals for school effectiveness at secondary schools of the Dutywa Education District. Themes were drawn from the responses of the participants and analysed. Some of the findings were: Democratic and participatory leadership styles were used by the school principals to achieve maximum co-operation from both experienced and beginning teachers and the learners in the schools. Laissez fair and autocratic styles of leadership appeared to be undesirable for the management of schools. For school principals’ effective management, they need to do proper planning, organising and scheduling of activities, assigning duties to teachers and delegating some of their work to competent teachers. The reasons for school principals’ ineffectiveness in this study were: favouritism, over-familiar relationships with some teachers, ignoring teachers’ personal problems, workload, lack of support and co-operation from teachers. Incorrect interpretation of educational policies were seen to lead to chaotic situations, poor performance of both teachers and learners, division between learners and teachers, a lack of unity between school stake-holders, poor job satisfaction and lack of trust and respect for the principals concerned. Factors contributing to principals’ incorrect interpretation of educational policies and execution of management roles were: negligence, lack of knowledge and ability to interpret educational policies, lack of proper induction programmes and training of principals and lack of support on policy matters from the Department of Education. Contributing factors resulting in barriers to principals’ ineffectiveness in the management of schools were: failure to give proper instructions to teachers and learners, failure to effectively use of available funds in the school, failure to implement all educational programmes in the school including co-curricular and extra mural activities, lack of experience, lack of support from both the Department of Education and the parents, lack of resources, high staff turnover, favourtisms and failure to hold teachers accountable for poor work done. Mechanisms deemed to overcome the factors leading to barriers to principals’ execution of their management roles at schools were: making the effort to be knowledgeable about educational policies, timely responses to problems in the school, regular consultation with stakeholders, employment of SGB teachers, taking direct supervision of instructions in classrooms and endeavoring to have good relations and gaining support from the SGB and the parents. The researcher made some recommendations on the managerial leadership styles of school principals for school effectiveness at secondary schools of the Dutywa Education District.

- Description: The purpose of this study was to investigate the managerial leadership styles of school principals for school effectiveness at secondary schools of the Dutywa Education District in the Eastern Cape Province of the Republic of South. The literature review reflects theories concerning the managerial leadership styles of school principals for school effectiveness. In order to attain the aims and objectives of the study, the researcher used the qualitative research method, both in collecting and analyzing the data. The case study design was used to describe and access the phenomenon and the purposive sampling method was used to select (6) secondary school principals. An open ended interview schedule was used for the face-to-face in-depth interviews on the managerial leadership styles of school principals for school effectiveness at secondary schools of the Dutywa Education District. Themes were drawn from the responses of the participants and analysed. Some of the findings were: Democratic and participatory leadership styles were used by the school principals to achieve maximum co-operation from both experienced and beginning teachers and the learners in the schools. Laissez fair and autocratic styles of leadership appeared to be undesirable for the management of schools. For school principals’ effective management, they need to do proper planning, organising and scheduling of activities, assigning duties to teachers and delegating some of their work to competent teachers. It was discovered from the data that the female academics still encounter a number of challenges with regard to their career mobility both in and out of academia inter alia, (1) gender stereotyping and male domination (2) knowledge retention (3) lack of mentorship and organisational support especially through funding and professional staff development programmes (4) lack of female solidarity (5) under-representation of female academics (6) teaching workloads and research publications and (7) lack of family support, were illuminated by the participants as common fixtures that hinder their career development in academia. Moreover, there were variances in both universities under study especially with relations to funding, gender policies in place and male domination. Consequently, the above mentioned factors were more pronounced in Zimbabwean universities than in South African universities. As a result, emphasis was that both South African and Zimbabwean universities have to draw a line between theory and practice especially on the professional staff development programmes that are offered to the academics. A crucial observation was made by the researcher on how most of the participants from both universities under study had negotiated their roles as mothers, wifes, academic and sisters in a bid to realise career growth, such that striking a balance between work and family posed a continuous hindrance their career development. As a result, hard work, commitment, confidence, self-assertiveness and sacrifice cut across both universities as strategies used if the battle of career development of female academics had to be won. In sum, this study attempted to illuminate the perceptions and experiences of female academics and what it means to be a female academicin the 21st century universityn and why there is a need to create, cultivate and have a conducive and supportive working environment. Moreover, promotion of knowledge expansion and sharing, gender equity and equality needs to be employed by both universities under research. Additionally, the professtional staff development programmes offered need to be conducted by qualified and experienced personnel in a bid to avoid repetition of workshops and training programs. Furthermore, formalisation of mentoring and role modelling should also be employed by South African and Zimbabwean universities. Lastly, the study recommended that there is a need for universities source out resources for its academics if there are to produce well rounded scholars who will be able to experience career development.

- Description: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors contributing towards the decline of learners in rural junior secondary schools in the Qumbu Education District in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. This was done because in South Africa before the 1994 elections rural schools were not supported by the apartheid government. Rural areas were disadvantaged in education, in terms of finance. This resulted in poor quality of teaching and learning. Declining numbers of learners in rural schools was occurring in all rural schools. Staffs were alarmed by the declining enrolment of learners in their schools because their schools were affected. Teachers were redeployed to schools where there were sufficient learner numbers. Department of Education due to declining learner numbers in schools introduced rationalisation and re-alignment of schools, meaning closure of some schools with low learner numbers. This led to learners walking long distances to schools. This study was conducted in the Qumbu Education District. It focused on declining numbers of learner enrolment. The literature internationally focused on declining number in enrolment of learners. These learners were afraid of Physical Science (Chemistry side) as a subject. They had taken Chemistry as difficult because of the perceived link with Mathematics. Continentally the literature had alluded to teenage pregnancy, affected and infected learners with HIV/AIDS and human trafficking. In South Africa literature focused on the educational level of parents. Learners with educated parents leave rural schools to study in urban areas because of poor education which is provided in rural areas. Lack of resources in these schools could also be the cause of declining learner numbers in rural junior secondary schools. The study used a quantitative research design to elicit data from the respondents. The respondents in this study were 50 principals of the sampled rural junior secondary schools. Data was collected from 50 participants through the use of a questionnaire; 50 questionnaires were returned and the data which was finally processed was from these 50 questionnaires. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for the analysis of the data. iii The findings of the study revealed that factors such as lack of parental involvement, socio-economic factors, HIV/AIDS - related issues, culture and gender - related issues, lack of resources, teacher and teaching - related issues and the education level of the parents were the contributing factors to the decline in enrolment of learners in rural junior secondary schools in the Qumbu Education District. In the light of the findings, the researcher recommends that more tuition time and the reduction of absenteeism by teachers can help reduce the decline of enrolment in rural junior schools in the Qumbu area. The Department must consider the number of learning areas and not teacher - pupil ratio. The Department should also introduce computer classes, woodwork, bricklaying and other practical skill subjects in these schools. Furthermore there must be resources such as laboratories, libraries and television. Some of the limitations encountered by the researcher during the study included the reluctance of the participants to take part in the research, the inaccessibility of schools in deep rural areas, the slow return rate of completed questionnaires and the obtaining of permission to undertake the study.

The proper execution of management tasks of planning, organizing, leading and control by school managers have contributed extensively to the success of schools. The researcher used both qualitative and quantitative methods in –order to collect data. Two instruments namely, questionnaires and interviews were used in –order to collect data. Tools used during quantitative research design data collection are questionnaires. Questionnaires were used in order to pilot the study for the purposes of identifying with rich information. The researcher used structured questions for quantitative questionnaires. Respondents answered questionnaires in the absence of the researcher in-order to allow anonymity and a stress –free environment. Tools used for the qualitative research design data collection method were interviews. Interviews were used for the information rich subjects. During interviews, the researcher used face-to-face, one- to- one interviews with each subject. The sample subjects in this study for the quantitative method were school managers of Mthatha schools. The total number of participants was 14. All of them returned their questionnaire responses at the agreed time with the researcher. Amongst the findings that emerged were; a high level of enthusiasm in all three schools for change; however, different kinds of hindrances were experienced. ii Finally, recommendations and suggestions were made starting that schools have to follow strict management /leadership programs.

The findings of the study showed that absenteeism, drop-out, poor academic performance, poverty and unemployment which are the results of pregnancy are some of the contributory factors that affect learning and teaching in schools. Recommendations were made based on the findings of the study. The study concludes by recommending awareness campaign on learner pregnancy.

In the study both qualitative and quantitative research methodology has been used. Questioners have been used to collect data. In the process of collecting data 5 schools within Mthatha district were selected. All these schools were on the Mqanduli part of Mthatha District because by the time the sturdy was started researcher was working as a principal in Mqanduli. Among schools that were selected there were 2 senior secondary schools and 3 junior secondary schools. From each school a sample of 5 educators was purposely ii selected according to their duties in running g the school i.e. in each school there has to be one or two members of the SMT. The position of the person in the SMT was not considered as long as the person is serving in the SMT. Also it was considered that people who are selected are members of a teacher union regardless of which teacher union. Some of the main findings of the study were: teacher unions are confusing the SMTs in that they sometimes get confused in knowing who to listen to between the department of education and the teacher unions. Teacher unions are sometimes helpful in that they train their members in understanding the professionalism that is required at work. Sometimes teacher unions have a tendency of protecting their members even if they act irresponsible. Among many recommendations that the researcher has done he has recommended that there must be constant meetings between all stakeholders in the education system to avoid unnecessary clashes. All parties concerned about the education system must respect the learner and as such he must be always at the centre of the education system. Also those SGB members who are expected to develop policies for their schools must be trained.

These ideas have important implications for teaching, texts and curriculum development. The study examined some of the above aspects in the context of South African Education.

In 1994, there were so many changes in South Africa which brought educational transformation at the fore front and centre of all discussions about the changes in general. The curriculum was reviewed and perceived as a guide meant to reflect the values and principles for envisaged learner such as human rights, social and environmental justice with a high level of skills, values and knowledge. Life Orientation as a compulsory subject that was introduced in the epitome of these changes and presents South Africa with the opportunity of providing a meaningful contribution to its youth and mainly as a partial solution to various social problems. The bottom-up model was used to explain the data which was collected from 5 schools in Cofimvaba district using structured interview schedule The schools selected were based in the rural areas of Cofimvaba District and the number of participants interviewed were 15 teachers with different educational qualifications. The data was then arranged and sorted into common themes as well as tallying and ranking of the responses. This was done in order to uncover the main issues that make the findings of the current study. The data collected revealed that some of the Life Orientation teachers from the GET Band (school 2: 3 teachers, school 3: 6 teachers and school 5: 2 teachers) did not receive any training nor support from the Department of Education on implementing Life Orientation and that resulted to implementation difficulties in their schools. However, some teachers that were interviewed in school 1, 2 (3 teachers) and in school 4 joyfully responded by informing the researcher that the Department of Education was supportive to such an extent that the department has provided study material, teaching material, annual teaching plan and also organised support workshops for them. Although that was the case, some schools (2, 3 and 5) are still experiencing some shortages in terms of teaching materials as they go to the neighbouring schools for support. Though there was support that was given by the Department of Education to Life Orientation, it is still inadequate as it could not cater for all the needs of the schools. In addition, the challenges faced by the above mentioned schools may also result in the provision of unbalanced LO curriculum implementation. Support and monitoring is crucial aspect when it comes to implementation of a certain learning area especially when dealing with Life Orientation. This is an easy subject to deal with since it entails issues of life, therefore, whatever support that needs to be provided in future will be appreciated in order to the teachers to be able to implement the curriculum according to its expected standards.

- Description: The main aim of the study was (1) to identify errors committed by learners in financial mathematics and (2) to understand why learners continue to make such errors so that mechanisms to avoid such errors could be devised. The following has been hypothesised; (1) errors committed by learners are not impact upon by language difficulties, (2) errors committed by learners in financial mathematics are not due to prerequisite skills, facts and concepts, (3) errors committed by learners in financial mathematics are not due to the application of irrelevant rules and strategies. Having used Polya’s problem-solving techniques, Threshold Concept and Newman’s Error Analysis as the theoretical frameworks for the study, a four-point Likert scale and three content-based structured-interview questionnaires were developed to address the research questions. The study was conducted by means of a case study guided by the positivists’ paradigm where the research sample comprised of 105 Grade-10 Mathematics Literacy learners as respondents. Four sets of structured-interview questionnaires were used for collecting data, aimed at addressing the main objective of the study. In order to test the reliability and consistency of the questionnaires for this study, Cronbach’s Alpha was calculated for standardised items (α = 0.705). Content analysis and correlation analysis were employed to analyse the data. The three hypotheses of this study were tested using the ANOVA test and hence revealed that, (1) errors committed by learners in financial mathematics are not due to language difficulties, as all the variables illustrated a statistical non-significance (2) errors committed by learners in financial mathematics are not due to prerequisite skills, facts and concepts, as the majority of the variables showed non-significance and (3) errors committed by learners in financial mathematics were due to the application of irrelevant rules and strategies, as 66.7% of the variables illustrated a statistical significance to the related research question.

This was a case study of eight educators in two primary schools based in Cradock in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. There were six main findings. First, all participants displayed a good general knowledge of CAPS. They saw CAPS as different from NCS in that the former is content driven as opposed to outcomes driven in the latter. Second, all participants were happy that CAPS specifies what is to be taught grade by grade as opposed to NCS which specified outcomes and required educators to construct the content. Third, a feature which participants liked was the weighting of different components of the subjects taught. This was seen as an important guideline that indicates how much time should be spent on each component. Fourth, participants understood that CAPS is not a new curriculum; it is an amendment of the NCS. As such educators used the same teaching strategies and methods. Fifth, participants had reservations about the CAPS assessment guidelines as they were the same as those of the NCS and felt that the guidelines which require educators to discuss assessment criteria with children were not suitable for children in Foundation Phase. Sixth, participants were happy with the CAPS programme of assessment and workbooks .They felt the programme guides their teaching while the workbooks complement their teaching. It can be concluded that educators, on the whole, held positive perceptions about CAPS. They saw it as explicit about the content that is to be taught, and it has clear guidelines about assessment procedures. For this reason it can be seen as an improvement on the NCS. Given the findings, it can be recommended that further research be carried out on how educators’ understanding of CAPS is translated into practical teaching and learning in the classroom. To improve the delivery of CAPS, the Education Department must devise strategies aimed at educator empowerment activities that will enhance their work performance.

- Description: In 2006, a new subject, Religion Studies (RS), was introduced in Grade 10 as an optional subject. It represents a major paradigm shift in education of religion at the public school level. Minimal research has been conducted on the factors influencing the choice of RS in Grade 10 by the learners, subject advisors, principal and educators. This subject might constitute an “easy option” to boost the learner’s performance. Former or “recycled Biblical Studies” educators may be available or even volunteer to teach this subject or they may have to be absorbed within the system. Ethics, morals, cross cultural respect and non-discrimination are critical for the development of the South African democracy. While RS is optional, it could play a critical role towards achieving these outcomes. This study restricted its focus to the Uitenhage District of the Province of the Eastern Cape. After careful consideration, the interpretive approach seemed to offer the best access to the kind of knowledge the researcher desired. A theoretical framework, that narrowly links rational choice with cultural reproduction theory, can prove to be inadequate. This study would be deficient if it was restricted to the family or home factors. Peer influence, self-efficacy or ability, utility value, motivation and teacher or school factors have to be included. The case study approach was used for this research.Semi-structured interviews were used to obtain qualitative responses from learners, from principals and educators whose schools are offering Religion Studies, and from subject advisors with oversight of this subject. This study discovered, inter alia, that learners did not have a real choice but were led to believe that RS was compulsory. The school has an influential role on a learner’s subject choice. Parental participation fluctuated from active to passive guidance. Learners saw RS as an easy subject and an aggregate booster. The school community both informs and influences the subject choice of learners. The peer influence of friends and fellow learners also featured in subject choice. RS teaches about religion and culture, respect, catalyses moral development, is enjoyable and easy to study but requires extensive reading. The limited diversity in RS classes did not allow for this respect to be tested. RS can catalyse the development of moral values. Despite this subject being an aggregate booster, learners enjoyed RS and therefore do well. After balancing the “costs and benefits,” according to rational choice theory, learners choose subjects with a utility value for their future career. RS opens the possibilities directly and indirectly. The majority of learners said that RS will assist them in their career path, not only narrowly in religious and pedagogical vocations but also more widely. RS could assist in careers with constituencies of religious diversity, in the medical field, human resources and journalism. RS fosters citizenship, non-discrimination and the rounded development of the learner and these objectives have attracted educators to teach RS. Learners enjoy RS, have self-efficacy, their performance ranges from good to well. Educators have a positive view of RS and contend that RS fosters respect, analytical, critical, constructive and lateral thinking. Principals were introduced to RS when it replaced Biblical Studies and much confusion between the two has ensued. RS is inclusive and also catalyses the development of morals. Principals emphasised the ongoing need for retraining of teachers through refresher courses, workshops and seminars and an involved role of the Department. Retraining would prevent the RS educator from being an “ad hoc teacher.” The Department has failed to act proactively in the introduction of RS as a new subject. Challenges lie in the integration of learning, essay writing skills and developing good model assessment tasks. Understanding RS terminology, confusion of RS with Biblical Studies, a shortage of resources, the vast content and the subject related methodology of RS are other concerns. All the stakeholder groups confirm this misperception. Researchers also concur with this finding. Biblical Studies educators have no advantage in RS but rather also necessitate retraining. RS, as a new subject with low intake, was not afforded all the requisite support. The number of schools offering RS is static. Provincial officials also reflect confusion of RS and Biblical Studies. The lack of staffing of the subject specialist at the National or Provincial level office is perturbing. Based on this study of the factors influencing the choice of Religious Studies in the FET Band, the following recommendations were made: Steps should be taken to ensure that learners be given a real choice Sharing of detailed information about the unique nature and outcomes of RS including its critical engagement Informed stakeholder groupings e.g. parents, educators, principal, SGB, community, Provincial and National Department of Education should not abuse their influential role of support by overt or covert compulsion Clarity between spiritual formation and catalysing moral development Educators should continue to foster enjoyment of RS Steps to be taken to facilitate integration of learning, developing essay writing skills and encourage good assessment tasks Increase diversity in class so that respect can be tested More information be given about direct and indirect career pathing Need for continual re-training through refresher courses, workshops and seminars Steps to be taken to address inadequate resources of RS Despite the “flattering” results for RS, efforts need to be taken by all the stakeholder groupings to ensure that learner’s competencies become a means in which RS markets itself Concerted on-going effort be made to clarify the confusion between RS and Biblical Studies That the Department assumes a more engaged role in RS Steps be taken by all the stakeholder groupings to encourage religious diversity in the RS class The National Department of Education has to staff both the National and Provincial Offices with well-equipped and highly motivated leaders.

- Description: In 2006, a new subject, Religion Studies (RS), was introduced in Grade 10 as an optional subject. It represents a major paradigm shift in education of religion at the public school level. Minimal research has been conducted on the factors influencing the choice of RS in Grade 10 by the learners, subject advisors, principal and educators. This subject might constitute an “easy option” to boost the learner’s performance. Former or “recycled Biblical Studies” educators may be available or even volunteer to teach this subject or they may have to be absorbed within the system. Ethics, morals, cross cultural respect and non-discrimination are critical for the development of the South African democracy. While RS is optional, it could play a critical role towards achieving these outcomes. This study restricted its focus to the Uitenhage District of the Province of the Eastern Cape. After careful consideration, the interpretive approach seemed to offer the best access to the kind of knowledge the researcher desired. A theoretical framework, that narrowly links rational choice with cultural reproduction theory, can prove to be inadequate. This study would be deficient if it was restricted to the family or home factors. Peer influence, self-efficacy or ability, utility value, motivation and teacher or school factors have to be included. The case study approach was used for this research.Semi-structured interviews were used to obtain qualitative responses from learners, from principals and educators whose schools are offering Religion Studies, and from subject advisors with oversight of this subject. This study discovered, inter alia, that learners did not have a real choice but were led to believe that RS was compulsory. The school has an influential role on a learner’s subject choice. Parental participation fluctuated from active to passive guidance. Learners saw RS as an easy subject and an aggregate booster. The school community both informs and influences the subject choice of learners. The peer influence of friends and fellow learners also featured in subject choice. RS teaches about religion and culture, respect, catalyses moral development, is enjoyable and easy to study but requires extensive reading. The limited diversity in RS classes did not allow for this respect to be tested. RS can catalyse the development of moral values. Despite this subject being an aggregate booster, learners enjoyed RS and therefore do well. After balancing the “costs and benefits,” according to rational choice theory, learners choose subjects with a utility value for their future career. RS opens the possibilities directly and indirectly. The majority of learners said that RS will assist them in their career path, not only narrowly in religious and pedagogical vocations but also more widely. RS could assist in careers with constituencies of religious diversity, in the medical field, human resources and journalism. RS fosters citizenship, non-discrimination and the rounded development of the learner and these objectives have attracted educators to teach RS. Learners enjoy RS, have self-efficacy, their performance ranges from good to well. Educators have a positive view of RS and contend that RS fosters respect, analytical, critical, constructive and lateral thinking. Grade 3 teachers’ strategies to help English second language learners overcome interlingual spelling errors

- Description: Spelling is one of the most important components of writing at single-word level and is regarded as a vital part of written communication. Also spelling is seen as an important tool in writing. Without the ability to spell as a broader aspect of writing, a person could not be called literate in the conventional sense of the word. Although the spelling is so important, learners in the foundation phase especially in grade three commit interlingual spelling errors. This means that at this stage learners transfer patterns of the mother tongue to the second language. By so doing that they write English words as the way they are pronounced in their mother tongue. Hence this study investigated grade three teachers’ strategies to help English second language learners overcome interlingual spelling errors. In exploring these strategies this study adopted a qualitative approach in order to ensure reliability and validity of the study. The data gathering instruments used included semi-structured interviews, classroom observations and document analysis. One primary school in Mdantsane a township in East London District was purposively selected to form the context of the study. The medium of instruction in this school is isiXhosa in the foundation phase and English is taught as a subject. Two teachers and their classes participated in this study. The findings of the study revealed that different factors contribute to interlingual spelling errors. These factors are status of the parent (they were illiterate), pronunciation, language borrowing and language transfer. It is also revealed that teachers have a limited number of strategies to teach learners overcome interlingual spelling errors instead they use strategies to teach spelling generally.
