- Description: Sikusinja was a rich man who was killed by his brother Gwenembe. A bird saw him do it and flew to the village to tell everyone what had happened. Through his singing the people understood what had happened. Gwenembe was a poor man who coveted his brothers belongings, and that is why he killed him. The bird when singing said, "Don't wonder, I saw Gwenembe killing Sikusinja and all the things he took." Eventually Gwenembe was taken to Kachere for Judgment and he was put to death. It is a story with a moral. 'Be sure your sins will find you out!' The bird witness is a constant African Image. "Sikusinja was a rich man. He was killed by his brother Gwenembe. The bird saw himdo it." The accompaniment of a guitar in this kind od story is unsual and a recent innovation only. Nthano story with guitar.

Now a certain man jumped onto the lorry without the knowledge of the driver. On going through the river the lorry stopped and the man fell off. The lorry backed and the man was run over and killed. But still the driver did not know he was there and it was only afterwards that the people found the body and brought it to the chief Tengani. Thay all say the driver was not to blame as he did not know the man was on his lorry or gave him permission. The case came before the District Commissioner who agreed with the chief. The people did not agree at the time but now they know the chief was right. "A Solomon come to judgement." Story (Ntana).

- Description: "Once there was a small bird called Timba. Timba made his living on a certain tree called Nkankande. He put a notice on the tree because he knew that the tree was beside the main path which all the animals took to drink water at the river. The notice said "Everyone who passes must look out because mu hut is here, anyone who does not heed my notice will die." After a while the elephants passed by and knocked down Timba's nest because the Nkankande tree is the natural food of elephants. At the time Timba was away looking after his cotton field. When he got back his house had gone. From the foot prints all around he knew it was the elephants and he said "I will see them on their way back". When the elephants came along Timba said, "which of you broke down my house?" "He had better confess at once or one of you will die, I am sure." Before the elephants arrived home one of them was already unhappy and his friend asked him what was the matter. "I am unhappy about what Timba said to us." He replied, "well if you are the one who spoiled Timba's nest we had better go back and tell him." But he refused and later that day he lay down and died. Messages were sent far and wide that an elephant had died and all the animals came to attend his funeral. Timba knew that the elephant had died on account of his notice, so when he came to the funeral Timba said, "I warned you about my tree, so let this be a warning to everyone that it is better to obey than to disobey because in this way a young man can make bad things right again." - Description: This first section endeavours briefly to set out the problem, seeing it ln its proper context against the need it fulfils and its historical setting. It attempts to show something of the nature of sin and the need which sin creates; and asks the question Why Atonement? This question can only be answered by an appreciation of the meaning and power of sinfulness. Atonement is necessarily from God's side, and it is costly to God. An important factor in this section is the attempt to see the wholeness of Christ's work; to set the atonement in its true context within the life of Christ. An attempt is made to relate the atonement to the incarnation, The Word made flesh and dwelling among us; to the resurrection, which is not to be misunderstood as a mere evidential appendage to the cross, but to be seen as an essential factor in the salvation of men; and also to the ascension, to the problem of time and eternity, in that while Christ's work was once-for-all, it is nevertheless continued - it was in history, but is not bound within history. When this conception of the unity of Christ's work is grasped then we can turn to a consideration of the cross, always regarded by Faith as the very centre of the atonement. A brief survey is made of the Biblical teaching concerning salvation and the cross; and the centrality of the cross is interpreted sacrificially. Summary, p. x-xi.

- Description: The development of the Cape Colony during the 'forties and early 'fifties last century is, indeed, a fascinating study. And as one aspect of it, a critical study analysis of the public career of John Montagu, while he was Colonial Secretary at the Cape, is of particular interest. For, by tracing the influence of his office in relation to the changing political, social and economic structures of the colony, it is hoped some contribution will be made to the knowledge of the period. Thus, the present thesis is, in part, an examination of the duties and responsibilities of the Colonial Office; but more particularly, it is an examination of how Montagu, who virtually dominated the Cape scene for almost a decade interpreted these duties and responsibilities. By concentrating, then, on his role in the civil administration and political management of colonial affairs, other aspects are revealed. The authority of the Colonial Office, which had through the years become a sort of government 'archives', was developed to such an extent, that every memorandum issued by it seems to set the tone for government policy. More. The very fact that Montagu was, time and again, left in charge of civil affairs at the Cape, while it reveals the dominant native problem and the vital question of defence, accounts also for the patenalism in government. The most important primary sources for this study have been the British Parliamentary Papers on Cape Affairs, the Cape of Good Hope Blue Books, Government House Records and the relevant minutes of the Executive and Legislative Councils. The Annual Almanacs of the Cape proved to be invaluable; they contain a wealth of information on the institutions of government, central and local, as well as the most indispensable returns for all the many services at the Cape.
