  • Description: These three short tunes also demonstrate the sound of the friction bow as heard by the player. One end of the palm leaf strip is held across the open mouth and the whole is set in vibration by the rattle stick rubbing across serations in the bow.   • Description: a) This tune in 5 time is very well known in the southern part of the country, and has been set to the Njari Mbira as well as the bow and was recorded by H. T. T. in 1933, sixteen years earlier. b) The player strained up his bow for the second tune. Both tunes were recorded with the microphone very near the performer's mouth in order to demonstrate the sound of the Chipedani as heard by the player himself. The mouthed harmonics can be clearly heard. Only those very nearby would in fact hear the bow clearly and the mouth harmonics.   • Description: The story of an elephant who was given a child to liik after. "I have brought up so many children, that is easy, leave it to me" said the elephant. So he took the child away into the thick bush. When evening came she called the elephant to bring the child back. But there was no reply. So she went home to tell her husband and to collect the men to come and help her find the elephant. They came straight away, found the footprints of the elephant and followed them into the bush singing to the elephant as they went. At this point the recording ends without the denouement, so we shall never know if she got her child back or not. Whenever the word or refrain 'Samanyemba' is used in a Karanga song it is usually associated with decit. It appears that Samanyemba was the father of all liars - men were deceivers ever. Story song.

  • Description: The Songano Souls (Mashawi) are the guardians of the parental instinct in both men and women. They are said to be the most important of all the souls. They represent the affection for children on the part of both parents. The traditional instrument with which to honour the Masongano souls in this part of panpipes of which there are very few left. The player, a very old man holds the panpipes in one hand and a gourd rattle in the other. This brief recording of less than half a minute's duration may be one of the best echoes of a faith which believed in the virtue of the sound of the panpipes as a devotional exercise.   • Description: The second small boy, in the whistling item with words, sometimes forgot to whistle the full sentence as he was so carried away by his own repartee. This recording was taken eighteen months later than the previous item. There is first a whistling conversation between two small boys about ten yards apart, and then another conversation ith spoken explanations of the sentences whistled. They bandy small boy's ruderies at each other, hence the laughter from the others. The recording is somewhat marred by tape echo.

The player Yelele Lungu is one of two blind muscians in the Petauke district. Blind from birth he has developed an unusual degree of petic imagery. He had bever seen either the sun or the moon and his poetry consequently reflected a blind man's conception of natural phenomena. He ate a great many and went to sleep on the path, full to the brim. Presently an old woman who was collecting firewood came along and said "My child, why are you sleeping on the path like this?" He did not reply. So she said, "Wake up, the sun is setting." He said, "I don't want to, I am full." Then he said "Come here and listen to my song". So she came near and the baboon sang his song. "The sun is setting, wake up, wake up! Ha-hey-ha, old woman! She makes me laugh. I have discovered this hill here. Which is full of fruit, so I go here and there, eating my fill and laughing." Now when he had finished singing, he woke up, got up and followed the old woman all the way to her home. Son story.

All notes bearing approximately the same relationship. Treble pipes are called Metenyane, Alto pipes are called Dinikwana, Tenor pipes are called Meporo, Bass pipes are called Meporo e metelele. Intervals: 259. 240. 209 cents. Total 708 cents. These copper and iron pipes are stopped with wood. In Bechuanaland, the pipes are made of reed-Matlhaka.
