- Description
- The exponential increase in population numbers has imposed greater demands on the natural environment to meet energy demands for food, transportation, water treatment and the production of consumable goods (Faulkner, 2004). The majority of the African continent is dominated by arid and semi-arid climates and as a result freshwater is limited with many regions experiencing severe water shortages on a regular basis (Schuyt, 2005). Increased natural resource consumption, technological advancements that increase the rate at which resources are harvested and global population growth have had numerous effects on the natural environment. Wide spread degradation of natural habitats is occurring globally resulting in changes to both fauna and flora and can lead to changes in species distribution and abundance, community composition and ecosystem function (Faulkner, 2004).
