The distinction of the genus Apolemichthys is discussed, and an annotated checklist of the pomacanthids of the Western Indian Ocean is presented. The first positive record of Centropyge bispinosus (Gunther, 1860) from southern Africa is reported, based on a specimen collected at Sodwana Bay (27°30’S).
