The concern is mainly directed particularly at the performance of the newly qualified professional nurses as they are the ones that practise at level one institutions, had just gone through training and been found to be competent practitioners. The success of any training programme and specifically midwifery practice as in the content of this study is dependent on the effectiveness of the assessment techniques or strategies used; hence assessment is considered integral to monitoring the quality of the midwifery care programme. The current study used a quantitative research design to explore and describe the role of assessments in enhancing midwifery programme outcomes at a public nursing education institution in the Eastern Cape Province. Recommendations to enhance the role of assessments for the benefit of midwifery programme outcomes at a public nursing education institution that were made were guided by the findings of the study. Participants were non-randomly selected and were personally provided with a self-developed questionnaire to complete. 134 participants returned fully completed questionnaires while approximately 25% of the selected sample did not return theirs. Data was captured on an excel spread sheet and analysed using Cronbach’s alpha programme under the guidance of the statistician and supervisor. Findings of the study were that: • the participants perceived the role of assessments as positively enhancing the midwifery programme outcomes, • though they also agreed and strongly agreed that there were major factors that prevented enhancement of midwifery programme outcomes. Ethical considerations were autonomy, beneficence, justice and non-maleficence. The validity and reliability of the data- collection instrument was ensured. Furthermore, recommendations were made for nursing education, clinical practice and future research. The study was conducted during the period of July 2014 to January 2016.

Purified CP (2 μg/ml) was used to induce tube formation in endothelial cells (HUVECs) seeded on growth factor reduced (GFR) Matrigel. In addition, the 2 μg/ml CP was used to treat cultured HUVECs. Sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and western blotting were used to determine phosphorylation levels of protein kinase B (Akt) and ribosomal protein S6 kinase (S6K). CP was successfully isolated and purified using anion exchange chromatography. The effect of CP on tube formation was not significant relative to the control in the HUVEC cell line. The role of CP on Akt and S6K phosphorylation still needs to be verified by using sensitive methods of quantification such as enhanced chemiluminescence (ECL) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The levels of CP activity were shown to be higher in early tumour growth than in advanced cancer suggesting that certain physiological factors could be increasing CP activity during early tumour growth. This study investigated the effect of cobalt chloride on CP activity in breast cancer cell lines. Cobalt chloride reduced CP activity in MCF-7 and promoted CP activity in MDA-MB-231.

The role of civil society organisations in land and agrarian reforms

- Description: One of the actions introduced by government to address the effects of the past discriminatory land policies that created inequitable land ownership and denied the African majority access to land was the National Land Reform Programme. The democratic government that came into power in 1994 intended to replace all the discriminatory land policies with those that were aimed at redressing the skewed land ownership that was as a result of dispossession and past injustices. This study focused on land reform in the Eastern Cape with a specific reference to activities that were conducted by 6 community based organisations supported by the Multi Agency Grants Initiative. The research has been conducted through assessing their activities in the different municipalities that are helping land claimants to access land. This study was important in highlighting the role played by Community Based Organisations in land reforms as they are based in communities, easily reached when needed and they understand the challenges that confront community members, particularly those that relate to accessing land. The researcher had a relationship with the identified organisations as an employee of MAGI and focus group interviews were conducted in East London in one of the workshops that was attended by representatives of the CBO’s. These were conducted in isi-Xhosa and translated to English. As a result of this study the successes of the CBO’s were identified and highlighted. These included land claims that were settled through the beneficiaries being assisted by the CBO’s, claims made on people’s behalf and large numbers of people that were assisted successfully. Amongst the many challenges, we identified the lack of support from government and being unable to attract requisite skills due to lack of funding to be the most inhibiting. In view of the successes and identified challenges, the study provides recommendations to accelerate the land reform programme through providing support to the CBO’s who, through their programmes, have been able to contribute to changing people’s lives. Land reform in South Africa has been pursued under three broad approaches: restitution, redistribution and tenure reform. Land reform processes have faced challenges that have made it difficult for communities and civil society organisations (CSOs), to engage government to ensure that communities benefit as victims of past racial legislations. The Eastern Cape is one of the nine provinces located in the southeast of the country along the Indian Ocean. The area was the site of a prolonged struggle for land between the Dutch/Afrikaners and the British throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, which led to the defeat and subjugation of African people. The province covers an area of 169 875 square kilometers with 37 local municipalities and two metropolitan municipalities. The mid-year population estimates in 2013 estimated the population to be at 6 620 100 (Statistics South Africa: Mid-Year Population Estimates, 2013: 9). The Eastern Cape, being home to 6 620 100 people, is the third most populated province after Gauteng, which has 6.7 million people, and KwaZulu-Natal leading the statistics with 10.2 million people.as stated in the Socio-Economic Review of 2013 by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. The review further found that the female population is larger than the male population in Eastern Cape. This is attributed to the migration of males to bigger cities in search of better opportunities. The province is ranked top in the number of people that migrate, and this is proved by the fact that “241 758 people migrated from the Eastern Cape Province to other provinces between 2011 and 2016” (Statistics South Africa: Mid-year Population estimates, 2014:15).

The role of emotional awareness in the retirement transition

- Description: This study examines the role of emotional awareness in the retirement transition. Retirement is viewed as one of the transitions in later life and has psychological consequences. It is an objective development and social-psychological transformation that is related to physical and psychological well-being. Research has shown that emotional awareness can have an impact on the retirement transition. A correlational research survey design was used for this study to determine and establish the role of emotional awareness, preparation and emotional responses in the retirement transition. Using a five-point Likert Scale, respondents were asked to score their responses to twenty-eight items. The questionnaire was distributed to retirees on the data bases of two financial companies that manage retirement funds. The SurveyMonkey application was used to distribute the survey to one financial company’s data base, and email was used for the other. Statistics such as means, relationships between factors, Cronbach’s Alpha, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation and descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data. The findings of this study demonstrate inconclusive evidence of emotional awareness in retirement. In addition to this, there were no significant findings regarding preparation for retirement or emotional response to retirement which indicates a neutral attitude to preparation and retirement, on average. There is a need for further future studies that include a more balanced sample representation of men and women, a comparative study based on different cultures to determine if differences exist in the experience of emotions in the retirement transition, and a field study in retirement homes and villages to corroborate the findings of this study.

Maximum residue limits (MRLs) imposed by importing countries have driven the need for alternative control technologies, including the use of entomopathogenic fungi (EPF). Bioprospecting in citrus orchards and seven years of bioassay trials identified Beauveria bassiana G Ar 17 B3 and Metarhizium anisopliae G 11 3 L6 and FCM Ar 23 B3 as the most virulent fungal isolates. Preliminary trials with these three fungi against the arboreal pests, California red scale, Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell), citrus mealybug, Planococcus citri (Risso) and citrus thrips, Scirtothrips aurantii Faure, have been promising. False codling moth (FCM), Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Meyrick) is the most important citrus pest in South Africa and while considerable research has been conducted on controlling the insect on the tree, the soil borne stages of this insect have largely been ignored. After laboratory bioassays, the three fungal isolates were taken to field trials. All three isolates persisted for at least six months after application to the soil. A large scale field trial, showed that although all three isolates reduced FCM infestation, isolate B. bassiana G Ar 17 B3 performed best, recording a consistent 80% reduction in FCM infestation throughout the trial period. The results of nearly 10 years of research on the potential of EPFs in the control of citrus pests in South Africa are certainly cause for optimism.

- Description: School-Based Violence (SBV) is prevalent in South Africa and globally. SBV is one of the challenges that the South African education system is facing resulting in a new deep-rooted culture of unsafe and insecure schools. Teachers are expected to teach learners, who display antisocial behaviour. These learners swear, back chat, verbally and physically abuse and show total disrespect for teachers. The presence of such learners has turned schools into battle field. This violence is not exclusively directed to teachers, but learners are also the common victims of bullying in particular. This study therefore sought to investigate how intergroup violence impacts on the schoolbased violence. The concepts, Intergroup Conflict (IC) and gangs/gangsterism were used interchangeably to describe actions of individuals who take part in the social conflict, driven by competition, antagonism and aggression within the school context. A qualitative research method was used to capture the experiences and narratives of participants affected by school based violence. The study employed the interpretivist research paradigm the phenomenological research approach was preferred for the study to gain the meaning, structure, and essence of the lived experiences of the participants with regard to SBV. To extract participants’ experiences, perceptions and views, the study used a semi-structured interview, focus group interviews and nonparticipatory observation methods. The selected schools were purposefully selected because of historical and ongoing violent incidents, as well as the violent communities in which these schools are located. The researcher complied with and observed ethical principles during the research study. Permission was sought and granted by the Provincial Education Department – Gauteng Province, as well as by the District Director.

Having been a teacher, Head of Department, Deputy Principal, Principal, and later an Inspector of Education, I had long held the view that the academic performance of the school depended entirely on the type of leadership the school had. Equally, I have always been aware of the negative impact of the past segregation and the discriminatory education provided by the colonial masters in South Africa and South West Africa/Namibia. The poor education provided to South Africans and the then South West Africa /Namibia posed a serious challenge to the leadership and management of schools as the majority of Principals, if not all, were poorly and inadequately trained to provide the necessary skills needed for one to be a successful Principal. Given this background, I tried to use a case study to explore the role of leadership in shaping the culture of the organisation. Research suggests that there is a strong relationship between organisational culture and school effectiveness. This study was guided by Schein’s three levels of organisational culture namely artifacts, espoused values and basic assumptions (Schein, 1992, p. 17). From these arise the following research questions: What do artifacts (symbols, structures, procedures and policies) reveal about the school culture? What are the espoused values shaping the school culture? What basic assumptions underpin the leadership of the school culture? How does leadership contribute to the creation and maintenance of a positive organisational culture at a school? The data was collected by using three different data collection methods namely, observation, document analysis and interviewing different people who hold leadership positions in the school. These were the Principal, a Head of Department, School Board chairperson, a teacher in the school management team (SMT) and a class monitor. With regard to data analysis, I first immersed myself in the data and I developed themes that formed the basis of my discussion with my research questions in mind. The analysis revealed that leadership plays a pivotal role in shaping the culture at the case study school. However, it emerged that despite the existence of a strong culture at the case study school, as with all other organisations, there are some challenges that limit the school to realise its goal of 100 % A-B symbols in all subjects.

Organizing the informal sector and reorganizing its role as a profitable activity may contribute to local economic development. This can also build the capacity of the informal workers to meet their basic needs by increasing their incomes and strengthening their legal status. Municipal support for the informal business sector may play an important role in achieving these objectives. The problem statement of this research report highlights the problems of poverty and unemployment in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, which has resulted in the growth of informal business sector. In order to improve economic development, local authorities are expected to give support to any sector that provides employment and incomes for the poor, including the informal sector. The overall aim and objectives of the research were to investigate the role of Local Economic Development strategies in the informal sector in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. To discover whether there is any support programme employed by Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality Local Economic Development Unit to boost the informal sector economy. To, assess the impact of the informal sector, in generating income for the unemployed. To identify Local Economic strategies employed in the area to develop the local economy. An overview of the literature on the informal sector provided a basis for the research into the problems facing street traders in Mdantsane, a large township adjacent to East London in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods have been used in the study. The use of data collection tools such as interviews, questionnaires and observation helped to solicit the required information. An analysis of the findings confirmed that the informal sector plays an important role in in generating an income for the unemployed particularly for unemployed women. It appears that the informal traders have some basic requirements that would make a difference to their survival and working conditions, but that minimal support is received from the municipality. These findings recommend that in the absence of formal job opportunities in Buffalo City, the Municipality should develop strategies to support the informal sector participants to survive and thrive in difficult economic times.

This limits the practitioners in the industry to address relevant issues and opportunities about their discipline; specifically in the public sector which are widely perceived in a negative light. The aim of this paper was to explore the role of public relations practitioners in state owned entities in South Africa. Methodology: The study was qualitative in nature. It was constructed to answer the research questions using an interview schedule as a research instrument. The population comprised of the PR and communication practitioners that work in the State Owned Entities of South Africa. Findings: It was found that PR practitioners are the agents of relationship building between the SOEs and their stakeholders. It was also proved that PR practitioners have excellent skills and expertise however those are limited by the unsatisfying devaluation of communications by management and political interference in SOEs. Furthermore, negative reputation of SOEs was not mere shortfalls of PR practitioner but senior management instability. Research limitations: Due to lack of availability and co-operation of practitioners, time constrains and lack of finances, study was not able to attain the desired number of respondents (12 respondents instead of 15). Responses were not always substantial, however, the researcher attempted to achieve the most accurate results possible. Value or significance of paper: the study aimed to provide academic framework on the roles of PR practitioners in South Africa’s public sector and enhance existing knowledge on the challenges that practitioners face in different organisations.

This study reveals that South Africa’s role in maintaining peace and stability in the region is informed by its foreign policy and its pursuit of national interest and protection of its borders. The study also found out that the motive behind South Africa being active in peacekeeping missions is that it avoids being surrounded by failed states which might have spillover effects into its territorial boundaries. The study notes that there are numerous shortcomings which taint South Africa’s hegemonic status. They include violent protests, xenophobia, racism, crime and corruption. The study recommends that South Africa needs to be proactive in solving the challenges within its domestic terrain as these shortcomings taint its hegemonic status.

- Description: The decline of sustainable farming in the past twenty years in the villages of Amahlathi Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province is a cause for concern as this has resulted in reduced food security and increased levels of poverty and unemployment in the villages. As this decline continues to escalate even to date, this study was intended to investigate the role that could be played by the Dohne Agricultural Research Institute in the reduction of poverty through sustainable agricultural activities in these villages. Using a case study of Kubusi village in Amahlathi Local Municiplality, data was gathered through interviewing farming and non-farming households as well as the extension officer for Kubusi village and Dohne officials in order to understand the reasons for and the nature of the decline in farming activities in the villages. The study was conducted against the background of sustainable liveIihood (SL) theory. Important findings revealed that economic factors, primarily lack of money to buy fence and hire tractors to plough are primary causes for the decline, this followed by the effects of global warming and the lack of interest by the young generation to participate in crop farming. The study recommends that the government of the Eastern Cape should intervene through the Dohne Agricultural Research Institute in reskilling rural people in modern farming methods and assisting rural farmers with inputs, primarily fence, tractors and irrigation systems.

- Description: The purpose of the study was twofold. The first purpose was to determine the role of the Head of Department in maintaining the motivation of English first additional language teachers in deprived communities. The role of the Head of Department will depend on factors that motivate and demotivate EFAL teachers and the influence of demographic factors on the motivators and demotivators reported by the participants. The second purpose was to establish the expectations that EFAL teachers have of their Heads of Departments in order to gain an understanding of the role that the Head of Departments can play in the motivation of the EFAL teachers teaching in schools situated in educationally deprived communities. This study not only aimed at presenting the findings but to also develop recommendations that can be formulated for the Head of Departments of English first additional language department of high schools situated in educationally deprived communities with regard to supporting the motivation of teachers. To this end, a literature study was undertaken on relevant theories and on the results of previous research on the issue. The research design was a mix-methods design. The questionnaire for collecting both qualitative and quantitative data was designed in line with instruments used in similar research studies on English FAL teacher motivation by Bennell and Akyempong (2007), Kassagby, et al. (2001) and Yau (2010). The questionnaire was administered to EFAL teachers teaching at high schools located in educationally deprived communities in the Nelson Mandela Metropole where isiXhosa is the home language of the learners and English is the medium of instruction. It was discovered that the main factors influencing teachers in the context of EFAL teaching in educationally deprived communities include the culture of teaching and learning of the school, the teacher’s interaction with learners, colleagues and the recognition and feedback associated with supervision of curriculum implementation. It was found that demotivated learners, unsupportive colleagues and unprofessional or unethical practices by the Head of Department to be the most demotivating factors.

The first purpose was to determine the role of the Head of Department in maintaining the motivation of English first additional language teachers in deprived communities. The role of the Head of Department will depend on factors that motivate and demotivate EFAL teachers and the influence of demographic factors on the motivators and demotivators reported by the participants. The second purpose was to establish the expectations that EFAL teachers have of their Heads of Departments in order to gain an understanding of the role that the Head of Departments can play in the motivation of the EFAL teachers teaching in schools situated in educationally deprived communities. This study not only aimed at presenting the findings but to also develop recommendations that can be formulated for the Head of Departments of English first additional language department of high schools situated in educationally deprived communities with regard to supporting the motivation of teachers. To this end, a literature study was undertaken on relevant theories and on the results of previous research on the issue. The research design was a mix-methods design. The questionnaire for collecting both qualitative and quantitative data was designed in line with instruments used in similar research studies on English FAL teacher motivation by Bennell and Akyempong (2007), Kassagby, et al. (2001) and Yau (2010). The questionnaire was administered to EFAL teachers teaching at high schools located in educationally deprived communities in the Nelson Mandela Metropole where isiXhosa is the home language of the learners and English is the medium of instruction. This system, taken together with the Principal Agency and the Rational Choice Theories – fully explained the prevalence of maladministration and malfeasance in government in South Africa. Secondly, the study established that the OAGSA has done everything imaginable in its attempts to improve audit performance in government institutions – using the carrot rather than the stick approach. The legislative framework cited above, revealed that the OAGSA has the power to audit and report, while Parliament has the power to enforce corrective action. The lesson of this revelation is: that there is not much that the OAGSA can achieve without a high level of cooperation between itself and Parliament – if audit performance is to be effectively, and appreciably improved in South Africa. A disappointing discovery however was indirectly delivered to the world, through the results of a research study conducted by one Wehner in 2002, on Public Accounts Committees (PACs) (alias Standing Committees on Public Accounts (SCOPAs)) in world democracies. The Wehner study clearly demonstrated that there was nothing contained in these committees’ founding documents or enabling legislation – which in no uncertain terms, directed the committees on what procedures and processes to follow to ensure that their resolutions were acted upon. In other words there was no enforcement mechanism discernible for their resolutions. Thirdly, there were developments in case law in South Africa, which augured well for Constitutional Institutions in general. They are contained in court judgements relating to the mandate of the Office of the Public Protector (OPP). To examine this question “In what way can training and the organizational support, of the incubation model strengthen the learning, experience, knowledge, skills and interest of interns/incubants to prepare them towards full participation in workplace roles and responsibilities in biodiversity occupations?” the research was undertaken in the context of university graduate incubants/interns in the Geographic Information System (GIS) field from three host-organizations; Limpopo Economic Development Environment and Tourism (LEDET), Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) and South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). The participants of the study were purposefully selected. Data was collected twice (i.e. after the first seven months and then a follow-up interview was conducted after a further five months) during the first twelve months of the project in the form of interviews and observations. There was also ongoing data collected in the form of documents which focused on their participation in workplaces and training. The role of transformative mediation in post-electoral violence: the case of Kenya 2007-2008

- Description: Free and fair elections, accompanied by smooth transitions of democratically elected leaders, constitute one of the key pillars of democracy. The dawn of democratisation and advent of multi-party politics after the end of the Cold War in 1991, seemingly held great promise for Africa. However, in recent years, many elections in Africa have consistently become a source of violence. Electoral violence is threatening to become an intractable source of conflict on the African continent, making it hard for emerging democracies to consolidate their status as free democratic societies. Many remain largely autocratic or semi-democratic. African leaders are all too often not ready to relinquish political power, while political elites are ‘power hungry’ and use violence to skew the outcomes of elections in their favour. Hence, electoral violence is employed in order to manipulate civilian election choices and outcomes. Election violence is often deliberately used to target civilians, and in countries like Kenya involves inter-ethnic clashes. These “new wars” are fought unconventionally using ‘crude weapons’, (Kaldor 2013). Kaldor describes how these ‘new wars’ are fought as intra-state (within the state) wars in developing countries. Often, they are waged via state or county networks based on identity or ethnicity. The consequences of electoral violence include the destruction of property, reversed development, injuries, rape, death, internally displaced persons and refugees. Electoral violence persists despite attempts to contain it and measures to effectively manage these processes often prove to be inadequate. The study utilises an exploratory case study of Kenya during 2007-2008 Post-Election violence. The causes, the immediate steps that were initiated to mitigate violence and the reforms undertaken to generate peace structures and prevent future occurrences of post-election violence were explored. Forty-five participants representing involved citizens, negotiators and mediators were interviewed. The research was triangulated via the interview process, together with the use of primary document analysis and an extensive review of the literature. The data was analysed via the use of grounded theory. The research findings reveal that the causes of electoral violence are multi-faceted and multi-layered, with deep underlying issues. The causes include weak institutions, corruption, a non-representational electoral system, ethnicity and ethnic militia. Further causes include statelessness as experienced by certain groups, abuse of state resources and human rights violations. The role of political elites who withhold crucial information, thus denying the public the opportunity to make informed choices during elections was also found to contribute to electoral violence. Other information-related causes include biased media and sensational reporting. Findings also show that socio-economic issues such as poverty, unemployment, scarce resources and unmet basic human needs cannot be underestimated. Lastly, the causes of electoral violence included diverse interests of internal and external actors at play during elections. The findings revealed that although the Kenyan mediation process included the signing of a peace agreement, the root causes of electoral violence such as corruption, weak institutions, abuse of state resources and the unjust electoral system were not adequately addressed. A model for mediation for electoral violence which was explored and developed sought to build on the strengths of the Kenyan mediation process and address its inherent weaknesses, thus making this a significant contribution flowing from the study. The election model for mediation proposes certain key phases which include a pre-mediation process that will ensure a cessation of all hostilities; the mapping of the root causes of electoral violence and electoral reforms that provide resolutions that are acceptable to all the parties. Training of personnel at all levels of government to implement these reforms is also proposed. These measures can ensure the integrity and independence of electoral institutions from political manipulation. Training constitutes a crucial stage in the process of consolidating the emerging democracies. The model for mediation developed is therefore not only meant to mitigate electoral violence but is also intended to serve as a preventive measure. Many African states currently experience structural weaknesses similar to those that existed in Kenya before the 2007-2008 elections (and still persist). These fault lines include corruption, weak institutions, human rights violations, and lack of information. The proposed model for mediation which aims to counter these problems can thus be applied and adapted for implementation in Africa and globally. Several recommendations with implications for policy development are proposed to curb electoral violence. They include constitutional reforms, training of government and electoral officials and the introduction of a properly representational election system. The research conducted yielded similar results for South Africa. The impact of family business on entrepreneurship and the economy, with respect to socio- economic development, has placed great interest in family business studies in South Africa. This study focused on the role of women in black family business in South Africa. This research found that women in black family business focus on bringing softer skills to the business which are beneficial for people management. In their capacity as managers in the family business, women tend to take on a supportive role to the spouse; they tend to focus on ensuring a harmonious and peaceful culture in the work place. Women in family business have a dual role of ensuring business success and quality family life. They prefer to work in the shadow of their male counterparts. Challenges faced by women in black family business have been identified as the lack of inclusion in strategic decision- making, lack of decision-making career opportunities and the lack of consideration for succession within the business, a lack of business mentorship and ambiguity of roles in the business and in the family. It has been found that the role of women in black family business may be enhanced going forward. This may be done through educational programmes or workshops for management skills for women, networking opportunities and support groups, counselling on work/family management strategies, and spousal sharing of responsibilities in the work- family management relationship. A suggested area for future research is the impact of culture in family business in South Africa.

The selection and evaluation of a sensory technology for interaction in a warehouse environment

- Description: In recent years, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has become a significant part of modern life as it has improved human performance in the completion of daily tasks in using computerised systems. The increase in the variety of bio-sensing and wearable technologies on the market has propelled designers towards designing more efficient, effective and fully natural User-Interfaces (UI), such as the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) and the Muscle-Computer Interface (MCI). BCI and MCI have been used for various purposes, such as controlling wheelchairs, piloting drones, providing alphanumeric inputs into a system and improving sports performance. Various challenges are experienced by workers in a warehouse environment. Because they often have to carry objects (referred to as hands-full) it is difficult to interact with traditional devices. Noise undeniably exists in some industrial environments and it is known as a major factor that causes communication problems. This has reduced the popularity of using verbal interfaces with computer applications, such as Warehouse Management Systems. Another factor that effects the performance of workers are action slips caused by a lack of concentration during, for example, routine picking activities. This can have a negative impact on job performance and allow a worker to incorrectly execute a task in a warehouse environment. This research project investigated the current challenges workers experience in a warehouse environment and the technologies utilised in this environment. The latest automation and identification systems and technologies are identified and discussed, specifically the technologies which have addressed known problems. Sensory technologies were identified that enable interaction between a human and a computerised warehouse environment. Biological and natural behaviours of humans which are applicable in the interaction with a computerised environment were described and discussed. The interactive behaviours included the visionary, auditory, speech production and physiological movement where other natural human behaviours such paying attention, action slips and the action of counting items were investigated. A number of modern sensory technologies, devices and techniques for HCI were identified with the aim of selecting and evaluating an appropriate sensory technology for MCI. iii MCI technologies enable a computer system to recognise hand and other gestures of a user, creating means of direct interaction between a user and a computer as they are able to detect specific features extracted from a specific biological or physiological activity. Thereafter, Machine Learning (ML) is applied in order to train a computer system to detect these features and convert them to a computer interface. An application of biomedical signals (bio-signals) in HCI using a MYO Armband for MCI is presented. An MCI prototype (MCIp) was developed and implemented to allow a user to provide input to an HCI, in a hands-free and hands-full situation. The MCIp was designed and developed to recognise the hand-finger gestures of a person when both hands are free or when holding an object, such a cardboard box. The MCIp applies an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to classify features extracted from the surface Electromyography signals acquired by the MYO Armband around the forearm muscle. The MCIp provided the results of data classification for gesture recognition to an accuracy level of 34.87% with a hands-free situation. This was done by employing the ANN. The MCIp, furthermore, enabled users to provide numeric inputs to the MCIp system hands-full with an accuracy of 59.7% after a training session for each gesture of only 10 seconds. The results were obtained using eight participants. Similar experimentation with the MYO Armband has not been found to be reported in any literature at submission of this document. Based on this novel experimentation, the main contribution of this research study is a suggestion that the application of a MYO Armband, as a commercially available muscle-sensing device on the market, has the potential as an MCI to recognise the finger gestures hands-free and hands-full. An accurate MCI can increase the efficiency and effectiveness of an HCI tool when it is applied to different applications in a warehouse where noise and hands-full activities pose a challenge. Future work to improve its accuracy is proposed.
