The impact of sovereign credit ratings on bank lending in South Africa
- Authors: Ndlovu, Nomusa
- Date: 2016-10
- Subjects: Credit ratings , Banks and banking -- Ratings and rankings -- South Africa , Bank loans -- South Africa
- Language: English
- Type: Master's theses , text
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10353/29566 , vital:77989
- Description: This study investigated the impact of sovereign credit ratings on loan supply of six selected commercial banks in South Africa during the period 1997 to 2014. Panel estimation techniques were estimated and the findings suggested that sovereign credit ratings have a significant positive impact on bank lending in South Africa. The results further indicated that bank specific variables (bank size, volume of deposits plus short term funding, return on assets) have a significant impact on bank lending whilst the efficiency ratio and cash ratio have an insignificant influence on bank lending of selected South African banks. The two macro- economic variables (GDP growth and interest rate) significantly influence bank lending of commercial banks in South Africa. , Thesis (MCom) -- Faculty of Management and Commerce, 2016
