The foraging ecology of Wedge-tailed Shearwaters (Ardenna Pacifica) in the tropical Western Indian Ocean

- Description: The distribution and abundance of prey largely influences how marine predators forage. Thus, understanding how marine predators respond to such changes becomes imperative when making decisions in marine spatial planning, especially in light of global climate change. Tropical marine systems are known for their relatively low productivity and high unpredictability of prey resources. Compared to higher latitudes, very few studies on seabirds have been implemented in the tropics. The Wedge-tailed Shearwater Ardenna pacifica is an Indo-Pacific tropical seabird with a wide distributional range. However, like many other seabirds, its population numbers are currently declining. Very little is known about the at-sea distribution of Wedge-tailed Shearwaters in the tropical western Indian Ocean. Therefore, this thesis investigates the foraging ecology of Wedge-tailed Shearwaters in the western Indian Ocean by tracking the fine scale movements of individuals at sea. This study was conducted in two different oceanic environments, namely D’Arros Island and Fouquet Island, St Joseph Atoll in the Amirantes Group in Seychelles archipelago as well as Réunion Island in the Mascarene archipelago during the Wedge-tailed Shearwaters breeding seasons. Here I aimed to investigate the foraging distribution of Wedge-tailed Shearwaters on Réunion Island in relation to different stages of the breeding period. I also compared the foraging ecology of all three populations, subjected to different abiotic and biotic factors. Furthermore, I investigated foraging site fidelity in individuals and repeatability within individual flight characteristics. To my knowledge, this is the first study to comprehensively investigate the foraging ecology of Wedge-tailed Shearwaters using global positioning system (GPS) loggers. This study demonstrated that the Wedge-tailed Shearwaters implement flexible foraging strategies throughout different stages of their breeding period and between different islands. In Réunion, during the shearwater breeding season, sexual segregation was prominent during early chick rearing and both sexes implemented dual foraging. As suggested by previous studies, it is likely that long trips were implemented for self-maintenance, whereas multiple short trips were implemented to meet the high energetic demands of the chicks. Several important foraging areas were identified for these Wedge-tailed Shearwaters. During incubation, shearwaters from Réunion faithfully foraged towards the south east of Madagascar near the East Madagascar Current and flew over large areas of the Mascarene Basin. During chick rearing, shearwaters significantly constricted their range closer to the colony and exploited deep waters on the south-west of Réunion Island. Shearwaters concentrated near oceanographic features such as the Pérouse Seamount (which is a known area of high productivity) as well as the Bourdonnais Ridge. There was no clear evidence for spatial or sexual segregation between individuals from the two study colonies in Seychelles during incubation and birds utilized a broader foraging range than birds from Réunion. This is likely to be the result of a large annual phytoplankton bloom which coincides with the shearwater breeding season in Seychelles, providing many foraging opportunities within the Seychelles Basin. The shearwaters from Seychelles exploited the Amirante Basin, East Somali Basin, and parts of the Seychelles archipelago. Shearwaters from D’Arros flew further east and foraged in the Mascarene Basin. Shearwaters from all populations foraged over deep, relatively unproductive waters with relatively high sea surface temperatures which are similar oceanographic features favoured by tuna. Foraging plasticity between individuals from different colonies was observed with varying flight bearings, flight durations and the maximum distances travelled from their respective colonies. Shearwaters displayed dissimilar levels of site fidelity, where shearwaters from Réunion faithfully foraged towards south east Madagascar, while shearwaters from Seychelles foraged over a wide range over the Seychelles Basin. Foraging effort for shearwaters from Fouquet was lower than shearwaters from Reunion and they spent less time at sea and foraged closer to their colony. These difference in behaviour responses between colonies may be advantageous to shearwaters, indicating that they may be able to respond to some level of environmental variability resulting from climate change and anthropogenic pressures. Lastly, during chick rearing, though shearwaters showed low levels of repeatability in flight characterising, foraging site fidelity was high amongst some of the individuals. Here we see that shearwaters continuously rely on permanent features, like seamounts and possibly fish aggregating devices, which are known to attract high abundances of tuna. Shearwaters may to some extent be relying on memory to find prey in a seemingly unpredictable environment. This study has helped us gain valuable insight about the foraging ecology of Wedge-tailed Shearwaters in the western Indian Ocean. Together with similar studies determining the at-sea behaviour of seabirds, better informed recommendations can be made to marine spatial planners as to where much needed pelagic marine protection should be implemented to preserve marine life in this fascinating part of the global ocean.

The different nature of these skills is absent in the literature to date. A critical analysis of literature will be used to examine Schwab’s (2016) claim of a Fourth Industrial Revolution and assess how the Average Worker and the Knowledge Elite relate to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and 21st-Century Skills. The evidence is provided on how both the Average Worker and the Knowledge Elite are key contributors to economic growth and will be important in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

- Description: The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is a new phenomenon that will impact human society drastically. It is complex, highly dynamic and constantly evolving at an everincreasing pace. To date the majority of research on the topic of the 4IR is focused on technological and scientific topics, with little to no work done on the human behavioural aspects such as intelligence. At the commencement of this paper only one other author published papers on the intelligences that are required to cope with the disruption associated with the 4IR. This paper is therefore the first known study paper which aims to determine the level of physical-, contextual-, emotional- and inspired intelligence of engineers in the South African automotive industry. Two comprehensive literature reviews were performed in this study. The first literature review aimed to create the context of this study by describing the historical significance, impact, drivers, critical emerging technologies and likely manufacturing scenarios of the 4IR. The second literature review investigated the theories of intelligence including the single factor approach as well as the theory of multiple intelligences. Additionally, the 4IR intelligence proposition is described and the application thereof in this study justified. A mixed method empirical study, consisting of 101 respondents, was conducted. Descriptive statistics were used to comprehensively describe the level of awareness, timeframe, emerging technologies and likely manufacturing scenarios. Furthermore, the thematic analysis of open-ended responses was used to identify the potential positive and negative implications associated with the 4IR. After the level and importance of the four intelligence components were established, inferential statistical tests were performed to establish the relationship between the four intelligences as well as to identify any deviance in the responses based on demographic variables. The study concludes by making various managerial recommendations that could be applied by managers in the automotive sector in order for their companies to survive and prosper in the disruption to be caused by the 4IR. As it is clear that the 4IR will have an impact upon the South African automotive industry in the very near future, it is of the utmost importance that this topic be included into the organisations’ strategic dialogues as a matter of urgency. This study found the level of perceived intelligence of South African engineers to be high. Additionally, this cohort indicated a heightened level of awareness and in-depth knowledge surrounding the 4IR. Therefore, this study recommends that organisations leverage these strategic resources to their fullest benefit. Joint 4IR task teams should be setup comprising of engineers and individuals from other departments such as Information Technology (IT) and Human Resources (HR). These teams should spearhead pilot projects in line with the advances associated with the 4IR. Management should further take into cognisance, monitor and pro-actively investigate the possible behavioural and psychological implications associated with the increased use of technology. It is therefore recommended that regular surveys, open dialogues and possible voluntary psychometric evaluations be conducted wherever these new technologies are piloted. This study also found that the 4IR might lead to the loss of unskilled jobs which would have a broader socio-economic impact. In sharp contrast to popular belief, humans will still play an important role in the 4IR and as such organisations should, therefore, openly commit to educating and upskilling their lower skilled employees in line with the needs of the 4IR as this would be mutually beneficial for the organisation and employees. This would demonstrate the companies’ long-term commitment to their lesser skilled employees and reassure them of their job security, thereby reducing the risk of job losses and potential industrial action.

Since the localisation of viral proteins in infected cells can provide information on their function, antibodies against purified Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) GDVII capsids were generated by immunisation of rabbits. The resultant anti-TMEV capsid antibodies recognised a C-terminal region of VP1 but not VP2 or VP3 by Western analysis. Examination of the sites of TMEV capsid assembly by indirect immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy showed that at 5 h post infection, capsid signal was diffusely cytoplasmic with strong perinuclear staining and moved into large punctate structures from 6 to 8 h post infection.

- Description: The purpose of this paper is to share and analyse the methodology and findings of the 2016 Green Economy Learning Assessment South Africa, including learning needs identified with reference to the competency framings of Scharmer (2009) and Wiek et al. (2011); and implications for university and work-based sustainability education, broadly conceptualised in a just transitions framework. The assessment was conducted using desktop policy reviews and an audit of sustainability education providers, online questionnaires to sector experts, focus groups and interviews with practitioners driving green economy initiatives. Policy monitoring and evaluation, and education for sustainable development, emerged as key change levers across nine priority areas including agriculture, energy, natural resources, water, transport and infrastructure. The competencies required to drive sustainability in these areas were clustered as technical, relational and transformational competencies for: making the case; integrated sustainable development planning; strategic adaptive management and expansive learning; working across organisational units; working across knowledge fields; capacity and organisational development; and principle-based leadership. Practitioners develop such competencies through formal higher education and short courses plus course-activated networks and “on the job” learning. The paper adds to the literature on sustainability competencies and raises questions regarding forms of hybrid learning suitable for developing technical, relational and transformative competencies. A national learning needs assessment methodology and tools for customised organisational learning needs assessments are shared. The assessment methodology is novel in this context and the workplace-based tools, original.

- Description: Economic theory suggests that trade plays a critical role in the economic performance of a country. South Africa and Brazil’s automobile trade has been greatly influenced by government intervention through policy regimes with essentially similar objectives. Through the Automotive Production Development Programme in South Africa and the Plano Brasil Maior in Brazil, both countries have invested much effort in legislation, technology and capital to boost the automobile industry and overcome challenges of strengthening the automotive value chain, sustaining employment, raising productivity and increasing sales volumes both internally and on foreign markets. In light of such government interventions, this study investigates the contribution of the automobile trade on economic growth on South Africa and Brazil. The major concern is to determine whether the impact of the automobile trade is greater in South Africa and lesser in Brazil or vice-versa. This paper uses panel data analysis through the Least Squares Dummy Variable technique using quarterly data from 1995 to 2016. The regression results show that exports of automobiles, domestic investment in automobile trade, employment levels in the automobile industry together with the levels of general government expenditure positively affect GDP growth while imports of automobiles and inflation have a negative effect on general economic performance. Both countries should continue with automobile trade and governments should offer more production incentives and tax exemptions for component imports. Automobile industries are strategic industries which need government protection. Promotion of long-term partnerships and relationships within the automotive industry will play a critical role in boosting production with associated deepening of the components industry. The LSDV model results reveal that the individual country effects are statistically significant; this implies that the results for South Africa and Brazil differ. - Description: Capital adequacy requirements are viewed as an important form of regulation within the banking sector and they represent a major change in banking regulation. The capital accord is a globalised regulation which seeks to reduce banking failures and achieve a stable and efficient financial system for the growth of the global economies. Through the adoption of the capital adequacy requirement in the South African banking system as well as having internationally active financial institutions, the South African economy is no exception to the benefits ensued by this regulation to the global economies. In light of this, this study examined the impact of capital adequacy requirements on loan pricing of South African commercial banks, using quarterly time series econometric analysis over the time period 2000-2016. The study used interest rate on loan, the dependent variable as a measure of loan pricing and the following independent variables: risk of default, market structure, Treasury bill and capital adequacy ratio. To confirm the level of integration, the study employed the Augmented Dickey-Fuller and Phillips-Perron tests. The Johansen co-integration and the Vector Error Correction Model were employed to obtain long-run and short-run coefficients. The findings of this study show that the measure of capital adequacy requirements CCAR is negatively related to real interest rate on loans CRL. This agrees with theory and expected priori. In addition, past studies in the developing countries’ context support these findings. Estimation of results reveals that all other variables such as market structure CMS, Treasury bill rate TB and loan loss provisions GLLP have a positive impact on interest rate on loans.

The study endeavoured to achieve the following specific objectives: (i) to respectively examine youth perceptions of ulwaluko and intonjane cultural practices and their impact towards their behaviour; (ii) to establish different stakeholders’ perceptions on the link between current youth behaviours and attrition of ulwaluko and intonjane cultural practices; (iii) to explore the extent to which cultural attrition has impacted upon the cultural goal posts of both ulwaluko and intonjane practices; and (iv) to establish the effectiveness of policy environment designed to uphold cultural preservation, integrity, growth and development. The study was premised on theoretical lenses of anomie theory, socio-cultural theory, cultural imperialism theory, and cultural feminism theory. Methodologically, the study used both qualitative and quantitative paradigm and was thus guided by mixed research design which was case study and mini survey. The data was collected through in-depth one-on-one interviews, focus group discussions and key informants i n t h e qualitative aspect of the study. In addition, the quantitative data was gathered through distribution of questionnaires. The study used both non-probability and probability methods sample selection, specifically purposive sampling (for qualitative data) and cluster random sampling (for quantitative) techniques were used. Using these techniques, forty-two (42) participants were selected for qualitative interviews, and comprised of eighteen (18) young men and women of both gender divides. Moreover, nine (9) key informants were included in the qualitative data collection. Therefore, the total number of both participants and respondents was 105. Data was analysed qualitatively through thematic analysis, while descriptive statistics was used to analyse quantitative data through the use of SPSS software versions 24. The study revealed the following: a state of cultural crossroad for both intonjane and ulwaluko rites; cultural attrition is indeed a reality; culture incapable of holding their goal posts; modern era a huge driver to cultural attrition; unfriendly policies on cultures a driver to cultural attrition; human rights’ wave and advocacy aiding cultural attrition; political infiltration of cultures; human rights’ wave and advocacy aiding cultural attrition; and community forums as avenues of disseminating the benefits of cultural practices. Based on the evidence gathered in this study, the following recommendations are made: purposive use of mass media to promote indigenous cultures; community awareness in promoting and maintaining cultures; formulating cultural policies that embed stakeholders’ self-determination, and youth ownership and participation in cultural preservation. The study concludes that cultural practices such as ulwaluko and intonjane play a pivotal role in shaping young people’s behaviours and moral conducts. However, modernity forces and various omissions by stakeholders of these cultural practices have contributed to their attrition.

- Description: Numerous studies have investigated FDI and the possible benefits for African countries in terms of job creation opportunities, technology transfers, growth and development. Despite these potential benefits, FDI also has its negative effects on the host country in terms of market dominance, profit repatriation and loss of tax revenue if tax incentives are offered. In an effort to attract more FDI, host countries have undertaken various policy incentives to attract foreign investors. This study examines the trends and determinants of FDI flows to South Africa and other African countries. The period chosen for this study is from 1990- 2016. The study commences with a background study of FDI and GDP. Various literature offerings and different schools of thought with regard to FDI are also deliberated. To offer a better understanding of the relationship between FDI and GDP, econometric estimation was employed. The econometric estimation methods employed were, Unit Root, Johansen Cointegration, Vector Error Correction (VECM), Impulse Response Test, Variance Decomposition and the Granger Causality Test. Based on Granger causality test it can be concluded that South Africa’s economic growth attracts FDI and not vice versa. South Africa must therefore focus on growing its economy to attract more FDI.

- Description: This study aimed at investigating the relationship between leadership and employee job satisfaction in the banking sector of South Africa. The study drew from the fact that there is a growing emphasis in organisations to reduce employee turnover by keeping their employees satisfied. The ultimate performance, effectiveness and competitiveness of an organisation are directly related to an organisation’s ability to keep its employees optimally productive and satisfied. Numerous research studies have been conducted on transformational, transactional and passive-avoidant leadership to determine the significance of their respective relationship with the job satisfaction of employees in different scenarios. Results show that the transformational leadership style has a significant relationship with job satisfaction; while the transactional leadership style or the passive-avoidant style are applied according to changing circumstances. The study adopted a quantitative approach, using online questionnaires as an instrument for collecting primary data. The target population of the study was 380 bank employees, and the target sample was 218; 121 questionnaires were completed and used as the actual final sample. Questionnaires were completed from managers and employees of the selected bank, with the two population groups being investigated using different scales. SPSS was used in analysing the collected data. The findings of this research showed that the leadership styles under investigation have a direct impact on the job satisfaction of employees. Transformational leadership was found to have a significant positive relationship with job satisfaction, while the relationship between transactional leadership and job satisfaction was positive but moderate. A significant negative relationship was found between passive-avoidant leadership and job satisfaction. It is thus the responsibility of the financial institution under investigation to highlight the significant links and benefits of this leadership style to its management to ensure increased job satisfaction and lower turnover of employees in the institution. Literature explored in this study supported the close link between the different leadership styles and job satisfaction.

- Description: The South African equity market is the largest equity market in Africa and plays an important role in the development of the South African economy. It is a relatively large source of finance for companies that want to invest in capital and expand their businesses. Firms that are listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) are therefore privy to an additional source of capital funds in addition having access to the credit markets. The development of a country’s equity market gives an indication of the extent to which firms have access to long-term funds which are needed for investment in production of goods and services and the growth of the economy. Historical evidence shows that downturns in the equity markets can disrupt economic performance of countries. The 1929 global depression and the 2008 global recession are examples of economic disruptions that have origins in the equity markets (Mishkin, 2013:190). An understanding of the risk factors that drive an equity market is therefore beneficial to both individuals and institutions. Individuals and institutions participate in the equity market by buying and selling shares of companies that are listed on the JSE. About 40 per cent of shares on the JSE are held by institutional investors such as pension funds and unit trusts (Ambrosi, 2014). The equity market therefore has an impact on people’s savings and pension funds invested by intermediary institutions. Investors who participate in the equity market do so with the expectation of receiving returns on their investment, but such returns don’t come without risk.

- Description: South Africa is widely known in the world as a country rich in mineral resources mainly due to its large mineral reserves of gold and diamonds. Such wealth in mineral resources in the country raises the expectations of advanced economic growth. How the production of mineral resources influences economic growth in a country is an interesting area of investigation. Therefore, this study examined the impact of mineral resources production on economic growth using the standard econometric techniques, such as stationarity tests, Johansen co-integration test and the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) estimation technique, using quarterly data between 1995 and 2016. In addition, diagnostic tests and impulse response analysis were conducted. In the model estimation, real gross domestic product (GDP) was regressed against mineral resource production as a percentage of GDP (MRP/GDP), Final Consumption Expenditure by Households (FCE_by Houselds), gross fixed capital formation as a percentage of GDP (excluding mining investment) (GFCF/GDP), labour productivity (LP) and Rand/ Dollar exchange rate (ER). The results from this study show that the explanatory variables without mineral resource governance positively influence GDP in the long run. On the other hand, the diagnostic test results indicate that the model is well specified and fitted since residuals are homoscedastic, normally distributed without autocorrelation. Likewise, the impulse response of real GDP is positive for mineral resource production, fixed capital formation and final consumption by household. Moreover, real GDP reacts negatively from shocks of labour productivity and exchange rate. Based on the outcomes of the study, from a policy perspective, intensified productive activities other than mineral resources production and re-investment of mineral rents could guarantee a sustainable increase in the real gross domestic product of a country in the long run. Furthermore, raw material processing should also be a consideration to foster economic growth in South Africa.

In a global environment where maintaining competitive advantage is of paramount importance, it is essential to develop effective retention strategies. In order to retain employees companies must try to offer an engaging environment to employees in order to satisfy these expectations in a different way from their competitors with a compelling value and attempts to increase performance and engagement amongst their employees. Nonetheless, employers are more aware now of the importance of an engaged workforce as a way of gaining competitive advantage in these challenging times, where employee attrition is high. Therefore retaining skilled and talented employees has become one of the major challenges faced by all sectors in South Africa, especially the financial sector as a whole. In order to alleviate this challenge companies have developed a robust performance management system and reward initiatives that enhance engagement. This study aimed to explore the impact of performance and reward on employee engagement, and to contribute to the human resource management science literature. The study also aimed to make recommendations on the management factors that determine these variables. The literature review explored traditional and emerging concepts, importance of employee engagement, types and characteristics of engaged II employees. The researcher further elaborated on the literature by including engagement factors, barriers and models. The second chapter of the literature then covered the concept of performance (individual and team) in detail and the concept of reward (extrinsic and intrinsic). From the literature review a performance, reward and engagement questionnaire was designed to find empirical responses to these challenges. The study adopted a quantitative approach (N = 275) testing the relationship of performance and reward (extrinsic and intrinsic) on the dependent variable, employee engagement. The study also entailed a cross sectional design approach. Minitab version 18 was used to conduct the statistical analysis. The findings support a strong correlation between the performance and employee engagement. The findings also indicate that there is a strong correlation between reward (extrinsic and intrinsic) and employee engagement across all employees. From the research findings there is also a strong correlation between the performance and employee engagement. The findings also indicate that there is a strong correlation between reward (extrinsic and intrinsic) and employee engagement across all employees that formed part of this research. The main findings also include some insights for organisations to consider and recommendations for future research.

- Description: The success of a nation is often determined by economic growth which, however, cannot reduce poverty, create jobs and enhance the general standards of living on its own. Therefore, policy makers should focus on policies that are more inclusive and promote sustainable development. Currently, poverty is the greatest threat to the achievement of sustainable development in most regions of the world. This study thus sought to investigate the impact of poverty alleviation on sustainable development in South Africa and Uganda. An Autoregressive Distributed Lags model (ARDL) was used in order to achieve the aim of this study. The variables analysed in this study were: The Human Sustainable Development Index as an indicator of sustainable development, gross national income per capita as an indicator of poverty, as well as life expectancy, expected years of schooling and carbon dioxide emissions (metric tons per capita) for the period during 1990 and 2014. The empirical findings in this study revealed that all the variables share a long run relationship in both countries. These results also showed that, in the long run, a reduction in poverty and an increase in the expected years of schooling had a significant positive impact on sustainable development, while an increase in the carbon dioxide emissions had a negative effect on sustainable development within South Africa. On the other hand, a reduction in poverty and an increase in the expected years of schooling had a positive effect on sustainable development in Uganda in the long run, unlike carbon dioxide emissions that had no effect. Since a cointegrating relationship was found to exist between the variables, an Error Correction Model (ECM) was estimated. The ECM results revealed that, for South Africa, poverty alleviation had no impact on sustainable development in the short run, unlike expected years of schooling and carbon dioxide emissions that had a positive and negative impact, respectively. In Uganda however, poverty alleviation and expected years of schooling had a positive impact on sustainable development unlike carbon dioxide emissions that had no impact. This study thus revealed that poverty alleviation positively influences the level of sustainable development. However, achieving sustainable development does not solely rely on reducing poverty, but requires policy makers to design strategies that are inclusive and encompass the different aspects of sustainable development.

- Description: The construction industry is one of the largest sectors in the economy of Botswana, and contributes significantly to the socio-economic development of the country, averaging 6.7 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). Botswana operates a free enterprise system where anyone is free to participate, which is supported by the existence of multi-national construction firms operating in the country. The construction industry in Botswana consists of various role players. As a developing country, Botswana’s construction industry is facing challenges of poor project implementation. The performance of the construction industry has not escaped the public‘s scrutiny of commercial construction and social development projects, resulting in negative perceptions with respect to the sector. This study focuses on the impact of project performance on the image of the construction industry in Botswana, and was conducted on projects underway. When public opinion is formed, a certain image of the business results, therefore the investigation endeavoured to establish the sources of negative perceptions towards the construction industry. To realise the aforementioned study objectives, an exploratory design sequence method was adopted henceforth applying established and tested quantitative and qualitative systems. A questionnaire was formulated and established to obtain the empirical data on randomly selected projects that were on-going or completed in the past ten years .These included public sector projects, private sector and those undertaken by parastatal organisation. The sample stratum deemed representative picture of the population, included various construction industry stakeholders. To facilitate for an effective data to inform the study, the questionnaire was categorised in three key areas of, biographic data, demographic and the industry best practice perceptions. The study determined that the capability of firms is influenced by construction management skills, and established regulatory systems. These can determine the extent to which the construction industry delivers the project within the business environment that is guided by the micro, macro and market parameters. As evidenced in the findings, the Botswana construction industry faces a skills’ gap and therefore is reliant on imported labour, and many international firms operating in the country affirm this observation. The study also addressed the existing regulatory systems, and the effectiveness of institutions. The study concludes that the existing performance regulatory systems are not adequate or they are ineffectively controlled; industry role players’ behaviour is irresponsible; there is limited skills’ capacity, and political interference accompanies project implementation. While the deterioration in the construction industry can be attributed to imported culture, it is noted that multi-national corporations (MNCs) and other foreign firms can be conduits for technology and knowledge (T&K) transfer to host countries in the developing world. Botswana with its free enterprise market and limited skill capacity and informed by the behaviour of construction industry role players, there is need for a structured integrity restoration process from both regulator and the operators. There is further need for a specific sector regulatory instrument (Act) to regulate the safety, health, and environmental operations in the construction industry. The construction industry also need to support research and development of the industry to be competitive both local and international.

- Description: This study investigated the impact of the Harmonized Social Cash Transfer Scheme (HSCT) on the children’s wellbeing specifically on their education, health, food consumption and nutrition as well as on child labour practices. The study area was Epworth District where the study sample, respondents and participants were drawn. Semi structured in-depth interviews and survey questionnaires were used to collect data. What was problematized in the study was that although social cash transfers have gained traction as a poverty alleviation tool used by many governments, their authenticity, sensitiveness and impact on child wellbeing is still being questioned. The study yielded that the HSCT generally led to the improvement of the beneficiary children’s wellbeing. In terms of education the HSCT contributed positively towards children school enrolment, school attendance, school performance and also significantly reduced school absenteeism. Furthermore, the HSCT also removed underlying impediments such as transport costs and consultation fees that prevented the poor from accessing health care facilities. However poor service delivery by government health facilities has threatened to derail initiatives and milestones achieved by the HSCT in improving the health of children. It emerged from the study that the HSCT led to the improvement of the children’s food consumption particularly in terms of quantity. However in terms of quality not much success was recorded because of the small value of the transfer money and also escalating food prices. In addition, the HSCT also led to the reduction of child labour practices as children were enrolled and kept in school hence making them unavailable for work. Money availability also saw external labour being hired to work instead of children. The study noted that the small value of the HSCT is an impediment to the full realisation of child wellbeing. Not much success was recorded in enhancing the nutritional composition of the meals because of the small equitable access to health care was not achieved since private health facilities charge exorbitant fees. Additionally child labour practices could not be totally eliminated because additional income was still needed. The study recommends that for maximum results to be reaped on child wellbeing social cash transfers need to be supplemented and complemented by interventions that strengthens the livelihoods of household. It is also vital to reinforce the goods and services supply infrastructure. This entails the government’s action in strengthening schools, government health facilities and enhancing overall food security in the communities.

The study uncovers the significance of the Child Support Grant in sustaining families and meeting their basic human needs. The study further shows that the Child Support Grant is a reliable monthly cash injection that benefits the children and other people in the households. It gives hope, allows beneficiaries to make choices and enables them to take care of themselves and their families, therefore restores dignity. The additional support provided to the Child Support Grant recipients promotes human development and improves access to education and health. The Child Support Grant has a significant impact on poverty alleviation.
