Objective: This study examined the relationship between perceived HIV susceptibility and actual HIV status among South African AGYW WSW, focusing on those reporting at least one same-sex sexual experience, using data from the DREAMS Evaluation survey. Methods/Design: An archival study employing the Expanded Health Beliefs Model (EHBM) analysed secondary de-identified data from the DREAMS Evaluation Survey with a multistage stratified cluster sampling design. The sample comprised 18,296 AGYW aged 12-24 across four districts in South Africa, including 1,362 identified as WSW. ANOVA was conducted using SPSS 28 to explore the relationship between perceived HIV susceptibility and actual HIV status. Results: WSW’s perceived HIV susceptibility was low (38.5%) to very low (25%), while HIV prevalence in this sample/group was 15.9%. No significant relationship was found between perceived HIV susceptibility and actual HIV status (p = 0.126). Conclusions: WSW do not perceive themselves as being susceptible to contracting HIV despite the high prevalence of the virus in this group. A cross-sectional survey of refugees from war- and conflict-torn countries settled in Cape Town was conducted between February and May 2023. Study participants (N = 147) were selected using respondent driven sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire made up of the Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL-5), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and the Post- Migration Difficulties Checklist (PMLDs), to assess PTSD, depression, anxiety and PMLDs, respectively. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the questionnaire data. The prevalence of PTSD, anxiety and depression symptoms was 26.5%, 33.3% and 33.3%, respectively. Regression analyses identified discrimination, poor access to health services, and poor access to food as the major predictors of common mental disorders among refugees. The document-seeking process, unemployment stress, language difficulties, not getting help with welfare, fears of being sent home and isolation, were also associated with symptoms of mental health conditions. These results suggest that psychological distress symptoms are highly elevated among refugees and are associated with post-migration stressors. The impact of international investment agreements on FDI in developing countries and the implications for development policy

- Description: This study investigates the impact of international investment agreements, specifically bilateral investment treaties (BITs), on inward Foreign direct investment (FDI) in recipient developing countries and the implications of such agreements for development policy. The study estimates a log-linear gravity model based on a unique dataset created to investigate whether the presence of BITs has a positive impact on inward FDI stock in 36 developing countries. The selection of countries attempts to capture a set of bilateral relationships that accounts for a significant proportion of inward FDI in developing countries. To test the hypothesis that signing BITs has a positive effect on inward FDI in developing countries it was necessary that all recipient countries be developing economies. However, investor countries are both developed and developing economies. Therefore, each bilateral FDI relationship is either between a developing recipient and developed investor country or between a developing recipient and developing investor country. For each recipient country, FDI stock data from investor countries for 2019 was obtained from the ITC’s Investment Map database (ITC, 2022). This yielded 1009 bilateral FDI relationships (observations for the dependent variable) after removing pairs for which certain explanatory variable data was not available. For the gravity model, GDP data was collected from the World Bank’s World Development Indicators Database (World Bank, 2023a), while the other traditional gravity variables were collected from the CEPII GeoDist Database (CEPII, 2011). Alongside the gravity variables, the study employs three additional control variables (two macroeconomic and one institutional) in certain specifications of the basic model, namely the exchange rate, inflation rate and an index of political stability. Data for the three additional variables was sourced from the IMF’s World Economic Outlook Database (IMF, 2022) for the macroeconomic variables and the World Bank’s Worldwide Governance Indicators Database (World Bank, 2023b) in the case of the political stability index. To examine the key question of the impact of BITs on bilateral FDI, a number of BITs dummy variables are created to investigate, firstly, whether having signed a BIT impacts on FDI in developing countries and, secondly, whether having a BIT in force significantly impacts on FDI in developing countries. Thereafter, in each case, dummy variables are created to investigate whether there is a significant difference between the impact on FDI of having a BIT signed or in force between a developed and developing country specifically, and having a BIT signed or in force between two developing countries. In order to examine the implications for development policy, the thesis analyses case studies of selected BITs between developed and developing economies, as well as those between developing economies. The texts of the BIT documents were obtained from the UNCTAD Investment Policy Hub Database (UNCTAD, 2023b). The results of the study reveal that, on average, signing and/or having a BIT in force has a significant positive impact on the inward FDI stock of the recipient developing country from the outward investor country. This positive impact is found to be even stronger in the case of BITs between developed and developing countries. However, there is no significant impact on inward FDI for BITs signed between two developing countries. The study finds that GDP of the recipient and investor country, existence of a common official language and the distance between countries all have a significant impact on FDI in the recipient developing country, and are signed as expected in the gravity literature. The existence of a common border is weakly significant in some specifications of the basic model and not significant in others. The additional control variables are all significant and signed as expected in the literature. The study contributes to the literature by distinguishing, not only between the impact of BITs signed versus BITs in force on inward FDI in developing countries, but also by distinguishing between the impact of BITs on FDI when the partners are developed and developing countries versus when both partners are developing countries. The study also finds that, in an effort to attract FDI, developing countries have signed BITs which carry obligations that extend significant protection measures to foreign investors. However, such protections are offered at the expense of sovereign interests. The study finds that this has served to significantly reduce the policy space available for developing countries to attract FDI that is aligned to their sustainable development needs. The limitations of the study are as follows. The gravity specification is cross-sectional, and a panel data approach could be recommended for future work. Furthermore, the traditional OLS gravity specification has a number of disadvantages and different types of estimator could be used in future work, software permitting. In addition, the impact on FDI of the termination of BITs could be investigated, as sufficient data is becoming available for such an approach. The primary objective of the study was to examine the household food security status and its determinants in Mthatha, Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The study was conducted in Tabase and Ncise in Mthatha. The purposive sampling technique was employed in the study and 336 data points were achieved. The study used the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS), developed by the USAID-funded Food and Nutrition Technical Assistance II (FANTA), and leveraged Tobit regression analysis, particularly advantageous for handling censored dependent variables, to examine the determinants of food household food security. The results revealed that gender, age, crops and social grants have no statistical significant relationship with food insecurity. Education, employment status, income, livestock and dietary diversity have a statistical significant relationship with food insecurity. Results further revealed that 40.36% of households were food insecure while 4.22% were food secure, 7.83% were mildly food insecure and 40.36% were severely food insecure. The study recommends the formation of agricultural cooperatives with government support, prioritising education incentives, and strengthening existing food support initiatives. It emphasizes promoting savings clubs and subsidising nutrient-rich foods to enhance accessibility. - Description: The Namibian examiners’ reports have repeatedly reported that Biology is generally poorly performed in most schools and the topic on food tests has been identified as one of the problematic areas. My assumption is that this could be due in part to the lack of inadequate hands-on practical activities that are conducted in most schools in Namibia. In my view, for students to understand food tests and its associated concepts, they need to do hands-on practical activities. It is against this background that in this study I explored enablers and/or constraints when Grade 10 Biology teachers mediate learning of food tests using hands-on practical activities. This study is underpinned by an interpretive paradigm, within which a qualitative case study approach was employed. For my baseline data, I used a questionnaire and I also interviewed two Grade 10 Biology teachers using semi-structured interviews. Afterwards, the two Grade 10 Biology teachers were observed while teaching the topic of food tests. The lessons were videotaped and thereafter I conducted a stimulated recall interview watching the videos with each of these teachers. Further, we also discussed and reflected as a group on the mediation of learning on food tests. I used Shulman’s Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) as my theoretical framework. Within PCK, I used the five Topic-Specific Pedagogical Knowledge (TSPCK) components by Mavhunga and Rollnick as my analytical framework. A thematic approach to data analysis was employed to come up with categories, sub-themes and themes. The findings revealed that Biology teachers do not have a dedicated laboratory for conducting Biology practicals and would instead conduct them in a common laboratory that is employed for both Physical Science and Biology or in their classrooms. There are inadequate resources to complement hands-on activities and teachers lack the capacity, skills and necessary knowledge needed to deliver practical work. The two participants did not bother to do enough practical work and instead taught Biology as a very theoretical topic, which disadvantaged learners for Paper 3, which serves as an alternative to course work. The study also revealed that teachers failed to conduct Biology practicals. They claimed to be doing so, but there were few practicals/experiments being carried out in those schools. The participants stated that the issue of time to conduct practical experiments for food tests was not sufficient. They complained that the processes were exhausting and tiresome and left them drained as they ran around trying to implement the practical experiments. Furthermore, a large number of learners results in overcrowded Biology classes and makes it difficult for the teachers to control them, which affected the teachers’ ability to perform practical experiments. The participants said that the high number of learners makes it difficult for them to accommodate all students in the laboratories, and that the laboratories themselves do not accommodate many learners. The study, thus, recommends that there should be continuous professional development programmes in schools to assist Biology teachers who have challenges in doing hands-on practical activities. - Description: The Namibian examiners’ reports have repeatedly reported that Biology is generally poorly performed in most schools and the topic on food tests has been identified as one of the problematic areas. My assumption is that this could be due in part to the lack of inadequate hands-on practical activities that are conducted in most schools in Namibia. In my view, for students to understand food tests and its associated concepts, they need to do hands-on practical activities. It is against this background that in this study I explored enablers and/or constraints when Grade 10 Biology teachers mediate learning of food tests using hands-on practical activities. This study is underpinned by an interpretive paradigm, within which a qualitative case study approach was employed. For my baseline data, I used a questionnaire and I also interviewed two Grade 10 Biology teachers using semi-structured interviews. Afterwards, the two Grade 10 Biology teachers were observed while teaching the topic of food tests. The lessons were videotaped and thereafter I conducted a stimulated recall interview watching the videos with each of these teachers. Further, we also discussed and reflected as a group on the mediation of learning on food tests. I used Shulman’s Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) as my theoretical framework. Within PCK, I used the five Topic-Specific Pedagogical Knowledge (TSPCK) components by Mavhunga and Rollnick as my analytical framework. A thematic approach to data analysis was employed to come up with categories, sub-themes and themes. This region and its fishes are under pressure from multiple anthropogenic threats, including overexploitation and large-scale developments with potential knock-on effects for the riparian communities. Previous studies have focused on known fisheries areas and the mainstem Zambezi River, neglecting large tributaries such as the Kabompo River. Consequently, little literature is available on the diversity and ecology of the fishes that inhabit these large tributaries, hindering the effective management and protection of biodiversity. This study aimed to fill the current knowledge gaps in the diversity and habitat associations of fish communities in the Upper Zambezi, using the Kabompo River as a case study. The first objective was to provide an updated checklist of the fishes of the Kabompo River basin using a compilation of historical data and field surveys. This study detailed the occurrence and distribution of 83 fish species within the Kabompo River basin. All these species have been recorded in the Upper Zambezi, with some of their ranges extending into the Middle (29 species) and Lower Zambezi (23 species) while others have more restricted distributions. The most diverse families were the Cyprinidae (26 species) and the Cichlidae (15 species). A number of potential undescribed species, whose taxonomic distinctiveness need further investigation were also collected. Taxonomic conflicts are also highlighted for some of the taxa that were previously considered to have broad geographic ranges or disjunct distributions. Consistent with findings from other studies within the region, the current taxonomy underestimates the diversity of fishes in the Kabompo River and Upper Zambezi. The second objective was to assess the habitat use of small-bodied fish communities during the low-flow period in 2019. Reconnaissance trips identified dominant mesohabitats along the middle Kabompo River around Jivundu. A total of 139 mesohabitats were sampled across the five dominant mesohabitats identified; Phragmites mauritianus, wood, rock, Vallisneria aethiopica and bare substrate. Catch per unit effort, species richness, Shannon diversity and Pielou’s evenness differed significantly between these mesohabitats. Twenty-six species showed significant associations (p < 0.05) with a specific mesohabitat type or environmental variable (current velocity or depth). Eight species were associated with the woody habitat, with three of these, E. radiatus, E. unitaeniatus, and P. ngamensis being almost exclusively associated with this habitat. Enteromius kerstenii, E. lineomaculatus and S. depressirostris were almost exclusively associated with P. mauritianus and represent potential indicator species for this habitat. A number of species were also with both P. mauritianus and woody habitats. Nine species showed statistically significant associations with the rocky mesohabitat, with Amphilius uranoscopus and Petrocephalus longicapitis, being almost exclusive to rocky sections of the river. Therefore, species such as A. uranoscopus are potential indicators for monitoring the integrity of rocky habitats under threat from sedimentation. The strong associations indicate that this comprehensive baseline may be valuable indicators/ proxies for identifying anthropogenic induced change in the Kabompo basin. - Description: The rise in the number of cores in a processor has resulted in computer programmers needing to write concurrent programs to utilize the extra available processors. Concurrent programming can utilize the extra processors available in a multi-core architecture. However, writing concurrent programs introduces complexities that are not encountered in sequential programming (race conditions, deadlocks, starvation, liveness, etc., are some of the complexities that come with concurrent programming). These complexities require programming languages to provide functionality to help programmers with writing concurrent programs. The Java language is designed to support concurrent programming, mostly through threads. The support is provided through the Java programming language itself and Java class libraries. Although concurrent processes are important and have their own advantages over concurrent threads Java has limited support for concurrent processes. In this thesis we attempt to provide the same support that Java has for threads through the java.util.concurrent library to processes. This is attempted to be done through a Java library (za.co.jcp). The library will provide synchronisation methods of multiple processes, Java process shared variables, atomic variables, process-safe data structures, and a process executors framework similar to that of the executor framework provided by Java for threads. The two libraries' similarities, and performance is analyzed. The analysis between the two libraries is performed to compare the code portability, ease of use, and performance difference between the two libraries. The results from the project have shown that it is possible for Java to provide support for concurrency through processes and not only threads. In addition from the benchmarks performed the performance of the za.co.jcp library is not significantly slower than the current java.util.concurrent thread library. Synthesis and characterization of molybdenum dichalcogenides nanoparticles via solution-processed technique for photovoltaic applications

These drawbacks of the non-renewable energy have quickened innovative work of renewable power sources, since they have an advantage of the provision of a better, preserved, decent environment that is free from natural contamination and commotion. Photovoltaic devices are prevalent in improving the green energy utilization and defeating the natural concerns yielded from the current most overwhelming energy sources. Herein, the synthesis, characterization, and application of Molybdenum chalcogenide nanoparticles (NP) as alternative sources in the absorber layer of quantum dot solar sensitized cells (QDSSCs) is discussed. The MoS2 NPs were synthesized from the aliphatic and aromatic dithiocarbamate (DTC) ligands and complexes as precursors. The successful synthesis of the DTC ligands and MoDTC complexes was confirmed through characterization with a variety of techniques including 1H and 13C-NMR, Raman Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-VIS), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) analysis. The synthesized MoDTC complexes (precursors) were further used in the synthesis of MoS2 nanoparticles. A bottom -up colloidal approach was employed for the synthesis of the MoX2 NPs. The successful synthesis of the NP was confirmed as the results from the diffractive peaks obtained from XRD which were positive and agreed in comparison with the standard. The diffractive peaks were shown in the planes (100), (002), (100) and (105) for MoS2 nanoparticles; (002), (100), (103) and (110) for MoSe2 and (0002), (0004), (103) as well as (0006) for the MoTe2 nanoparticles. The MoSe2 nanoparticles showed the least size of the nanoparticles followed by MoTe2 and lastly MoS2. These results agreed with the results obtained using SEM analysis. For the optical properties of the nanoparticles, UV-VIS and PL were used, the shift of the peaks from the red shift (600 nm) to the blue shift 270-5 nm and 287-9 nm (UV-VIS) confirmed that the nanoparticles were quantum confined. This study shows that Chipangano, which means a pact, was formed with the intention to extend ZANU-PF patronage system, canvassing support and regain control of Mbare district from the MDC. The group consolidated itself as a shadow militia group for ZANU-PF that intimidated the opposition parties and coerced the general populace to attend ZANU-PF functions. It also shows that the vigilante group seized Harare City Council’s duties, such as collecting gate-takings from local and long distance public transport at Mbare Bus Terminal; controlling allocations of market stalls and collecting rents from market stalls, for personal benefits. The group also politicised the access to local state property. Chipangano’s collusion with ZANU-PF and state structures licensed it to engage in criminal activities with impunity, thus this thesis seeks to understand the relationship between the vigilantes, ZANU-PF and state structures. The activities of Chipangano such as abduction, intimidation, beatings, killings and displacement of people resulted in social trauma. - Description: My novella concerns the dynamics of a relationship between two girls. It shows the heterosexual‐like nature of the relationship rather than dwelling on the pressures on lesbians from society as a whole. At its core is the raw emotion and passion of the relationship, which is at the same time toxic, destructive and volatile because of their class differences and other insecurities. Towards qualifications for environmental practitioners: a study of roles and competencies of entry level environmental managers

- Description: The decision by the previous apartheid governments to deprive the black population of quality education and training has dealt both the people (student and workers) and the economy of this country a severe blow. That blow is demonstrated by the current lack of skills among the majority of people of this country, particularly the black workers who constitute the majority of the workforce. The post-apartheid government is making a strong attempt at redressing the past injustices in all its forms, of particular interest in this research project, the endeavours in the education and training sphere, specifically developments associated with the National Qualifications Framework. The passing into law of the South African Qualifications Act of 1995 and the formulation of the National Qualification Framework represent significant milestones towards redressing current education and training imbalances. In order to actualise the promises of these policies and laws, new qualifications will have to be developed. This research project explores training needs of environmental practitioners in three different contexts employing a combination of research methods, i.e. Case Study and a Survey. The research project sought to identify the roles and training needs of environmental management practitioners in fulfilling their job demands as well as for career advancement. The research also sought to identify through a survey training courses currently on offer in South Africa in the environmental management field. The cases revealed a range of roles and competencies required by 'entry-level' environmental managers. Of note was the observation that these roles were broader than what the traditional perspectives on environmental management might suggest, and competencies required included several social skills, in addition to various technical skills. The survey revealed a strong leaning towards technical competence among the majority of available training courses in environmental management; and that technical emphasis remained the case even among those courses that appeared to include at least one 'social' dimension. It thus seems that this emphasis on technical competence is not consistent with the job demands of the three studied environmental management practitioners. The research identified a need for an encompassing (broad) course or qualification at 'entry level' that would take into account the realities on the ground as they confront these practitioners on a daily basis. Such training will provide practitioners with the necessary competencies to function in this seemingly evolving field of environmental management. Suggestions to inform the development of an entry-level qualification or training programme are made as part of the recommendations flowing from the research findings. The suggested qualification 'framework' is based on generic areas identified among the research participants.
