- Description: This research explores gender dynamics within non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and examines whether, and to what extent women in the NGO sector perceive gender dynamics as playing instrumental roles in NGO organisational processes and structures. In conjunction with this, this research aims to explore the relationship between gender stereotypes and career progression. Black feminism and postcolonial feminism will be implemented as theoretical frameworks to explore how social or gender, age, race, and class interact with the organisational process of NGOs. The concepts of intersectionality and subjectivity are useful in understanding how interactions between race, class, and gender play a role in the subjective experiences of women of all backgrounds in post-apartheid South Africa. A postcolonial feminist approach focuses on the representation of African women, and allows an exploration of the knowledge of South African women within NGOs that will provide more perspectives to organisational studies. Traditional perspectives of gender stereotypes are widespread, but several respondents are indifferent to gender stereotypes while some of them feel that they are non-existent. The findings indicate that gender stereotypes continue to exist with forward movements in social progress, where progress might be stalled because of ingrained patriarchal norms, making it difficult to eradicate gender inequality. The findings from the research also suggest that there are tensions and contradictions involved when it comes to how female NGO staff members perceive gender discrimination, providing nuance to existing research. This research acknowledges the period of transition that society is in and recognises how complexities emerge. The findings capture the present state of gender identity, and applying an intersectional approach has indicated that other factors such as race, ethnicity and age take precedence. The research also recognises the importance of tracking and responding to changing societal attitudes in times of transition. Pharmacists’ assistants (post-basic) perceptions regarding the training they have received to support their roles was generally positive, with an emphasis on the comprehensiveness and appropriateness of training. Participants supported their perceptions by providing scenarios in their workplace on how the training has improved their knowledge in performing their job functions and confidence in carrying out their duties. Differences in perceptions regarding preparedness of PAPBs to carry out their roles and responsibilities in pharmaceutical manufacturing were noted and appeared to be dependent on the nature of the role and the activities involved where further on-the-job training might be required. Participants also demonstrated an interest in the expansion of the curriculum to cover more specialised other aspects of the pharmaceutical manufacturing such as quality and regulatory. With the increasing number of mental illness cases being reported, not only in South Africa but the rest of the world, it is imperative to explore what the elderly understand about mental illnesses, given that they may have insights that might be useful. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of elderly members in the isiXhosa community of the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality in the Eastern Cape province, regarding their understanding of mental illnesses. The researcher employed an exploratory-descriptive, qualitative design and adopted Lincoln and Guba’s model of trustworthiness. Participants were recruited through the use of snowball and purposive sampling and the data was gathered through one-on-one interviews conducted with elderly isiXhosa individuals. Thematic analysis was used as a means of data analysis, by following data analysis method by Braun and Clarke. The following themes were identified during the study; Limited understanding about mental illness, varied causes of mental illness and a generationally linked understanding of mental illness. - Description: In terms of the South African Public Service Act,1 an employee who absents him- /herself from official duties without permission of his or her head of department, office or institution for a period exceeding one calendar month is deemed to have been discharged by operation of law. A similar provision can also be found in section 14 of the Employment of Educators Act,2 which expressly refers to fourteen (14) consecutive day’s unauthorised absence as opposed to thirty (30) days. Employees whose services have been terminated by operation of law are deprived an opportunity to defend themselves prior to the dismissal as prescribed by the Labour Relations Act3 (LRA). South African courts have grappled with several cases relating to dismissal by operation of law in the public service. The nature of these provisions is such that employees in the public sector are discharged from their duties without any hearing to offer them the opportunity to state their side and/or give a reasonable explanation for their absence. These provisions will thus be referred to herein as “the deeming provisions”. The deeming provisions provide that the discharge / dismissal is “on account of misconduct” however, it does not provide for a pre-dismissal procedure that is to be followed when dismissal is on account of misconduct, as prescribed by the LRA. It has been settled in our law that dismissal by operation of law is not dismissal for the purposes of the LRA. The employees dismissed by operation of law are regarded as if they are not entitled to a hearing. The right to fair labour practices protects everyone including public sector employees, 4 and such right is given effect to by way of enactment of the LRA. - Description: The puma (Puma concolor) is a wide-ranging large felid species occupying an extensive geographic range throughout North and South America, and site-specific research on their diet is important for local management. Like other large felids, puma diet may differ between sexes due to size dimorphism, and between seasons due to changes in prey vulnerability and availability. This study assessed the influence of sex and season on puma diet in south-west New Mexico in terms of prey species and prey size categories. Pumas specialised on mule deer and elk throughout the year, and killed a range of other species of different sizes. The diet of the smaller female puma was nested within the diet of males, supporting the size-nested strategy. The effect of puma sex on prey species and size categories was independent of season, and vice versa, and the probability of a female making a medium-sized kill such as mule deer was higher than for males, while the probability of an extra-large kill such as elk was substantially greater for males. The probability of pumas killing either mule deer or elk in each season was similar, and greater than other species categories. Additionally, individual puma strongly influenced all prey species and size categories killed. - Description: Households consume up to 20% of total global electricity consumption, hence they are important role players in efforts for promoting sustainable consumption. Research on electricity-use behaviour and effectiveness of interventions is important for informing intervention strategies. However, relative to developed countries, research on this subject is lacking in developing countries, where electricity access is limited, and a substantial proportion of households are energy poor. The main goal of this study was to examine reported electricity-use behaviour and the effects of co-designed interventions on household electricity consumption in low-income households in Makhanda, South Africa, using a field-based experiment. Findings from self-reported electricity-use practices showed mixed results, with households reporting both good electricity-use behaviour (e.g., cooling down hot food before refrigeration) and wasteful actions (e.g., leaving appliances on standby). Results showed that electricity-use behaviour was influenced by socio-psychological values including universalism, benevolence, hedonism, and power. Over the intervention period, households exposed to co-designed electricity-saving interventions showed mean electricity savings of about 5.5%, while households in the Partial Treatment and Control group showed increased electricity consumption. Socio-demographic factors such as age and psychological factors (involvement and perceived behavioural control) were very important determinants of household consumption. - Description: The common carp, Cyprinus carpio is a highly invasive fish species, first introduced into South Africa in the late nineteen century, and now widely spread throughout the country. In 1991 carp were illegally introduced to Groenvlei, within the Goukamma Nature Reserve in the Western Cape Province. Decreases in water quality and declines in biota have been attributed to the now large numbers of carp. Management measures have commenced to reduce the carp population, however these are not underpinned by science as little is known about the biology and movement patterns of resident carp. The age, growth and maturity of carp within the lake was determined using oxytetracycline hydrochloride marked asteriscus otoliths and macroscopic gonad development staging methods. The results showed that carp in Groenvlei had similar growth characteristics to the invasive populations in North America and Australia; fast growth during the first three to five years and reproductive maturity attained between the ages of two to three years, and are long lived (maximum age of 20 years old). Their growth however differed from the only other study on a South African population. Six acoustically tagged carp were manually tracked in order to report on their movement patterns and habitat use. Carp moved much greater distances in February compared to October and November, and occupied different areas of the lake. In November they were found to aggregate in backwaters which corresponds with their breeding activities. Literature on global carp control shows that whilst eradication of this fish can be achieved in small isolated waters using icthyocides and water drawdowns, in conservation priority areas such as Groenvlei where this is not possible, mechanical removal using multiple gears targeting vulnerable life stages can most efficient at controlling carp. - Description: The common carp, Cyprinus carpio is a highly invasive fish species, first introduced into South Africa in the late nineteen century, and now widely spread throughout the country. In 1991 carp were illegally introduced to Groenvlei, within the Goukamma Nature Reserve in the Western Cape Province. Decreases in water quality and declines in biota have been attributed to the now large numbers of carp. Management measures have commenced to reduce the carp population, however these are not underpinned by science as little is known about the biology and movement patterns of resident carp. The age, growth and maturity of carp within the lake was determined using oxytetracycline hydrochloride marked asteriscus otoliths and macroscopic gonad development staging methods. The results showed that carp in Groenvlei had similar growth characteristics to the invasive populations in North America and Australia; fast growth during the first three to five years and reproductive maturity attained between the ages of two to three years, and are long lived (maximum age of 20 years old). Their growth however differed from the only other study on a South African population. Six acoustically tagged carp were manually tracked in order to report on their movement patterns and habitat use. Carp moved much greater distances in February compared to October and November, and occupied different areas of the lake. In November they were found to aggregate in backwaters which corresponds with their breeding activities. Literature on global carp control shows that whilst eradication of this fish can be achieved in small isolated waters using icthyocides and water drawdowns, in conservation priority areas such as Groenvlei where this is not possible, mechanical removal using multiple gears targeting vulnerable life stages can most efficient at controlling carp. In South Africa, the QTL in secondary school remains low and compromised despite the implementation of EFA policy and use of EDOs in South Africa generally and King Williams Town (KWT) in particular. The drive of this study is to assess the role played by EDOs in supporting QTL in selected secondary schools in King Williams Town District. The study used a qualitative approach, a case study design was followed and the case in point for this study is EDOs in KWT district. Their roles where assessed between two secondary schools namely Enoch Sontonga high school and Nosizwe high school. Ten (10) interviews using face-to face and telephonic method. The study managed to conduct five face-to-face interviews among EDOs as they were conveniently located during a period of workshops in the circuit and two educators and three principals were interviewed electronically. Purposive and convenience sampling techniques were used to select participants. Using the Popper’s theory of learning perspective the study found out that quality teaching and learning in KWT schools is dependent on factors such as time on task, scope of learning, learning environment, teaching methods and strategies, support and monitoring programmes, the teacher preparedness and their motivation and availability of attractive incentives to retain quality practitioners in their classrooms. The study found out that presently the EDOs are performing various roles such as offering support to the SMT through helping them understand their function within the school and the broader education system and helping in developing systems for monitoring and recording progress made by learners towards achievement of targets set. However, there are challenges encountered by EDOs when supporting schools to improve the QTL that were discussed namely, lack of human resources and material resources; educator resistance; non-academic activities; learner and teacher absenteeism; programmes alignment; and work overload. These challenges can be addressed using strategies such as human resources training and recruitment; programmes coordination and stakeholder cooperation; transport provision; consequence management; attitude change and policy alignment and implementation. Equipping the workforce with the skills needed is a strategic priority for all developing countries’ national growth and progress. This paper seeks to investigate a nexus between employee skills development and competence in the Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE). The paper employed a qualitative research technique and the explanatory research design to achieve its desired objectives. The results of the paper confirmed that skills training and development strategy, when implemented by institutions, ensures that staff is empowered, informed, and taught, which results in better efficiency and effectiveness. In this situation, spin-offs will benefit public organizations since employees’ increased abilities open new opportunities for long-term employment growth and organizational effectiveness. Furthermore, the knowledgeable and well-trained individual would make sound organizational decisions while successfully listening to the clients' problems. The benefits will flow down to the areas where these organizations are headquartered, and the improved image will be the goal for the ECDoE. The conclusion drawn is that Skills Development Act aims to provide skills to the South African workforce, ensure that employees have more opportunities for skill acquisition, provide opportunities for new entrants to gain work experience. The ECDoE should invest more in skills development to increase the competencies of its employees. - Description: When embarking on a journey of preparing a musical work for performance, a contextualisation process is undertaken which informs the performer/s of the factors which govern the parameters of the work. In this study, the author performed Emil Hartmann’s piano trio op. 10 as a part of an integrated master’s degree program. As the composer was not a part of mainland European musical society, information on his life and work was difficult to access, which presented the performer with a contextualisation problem. This study aimed to highlight the process of contextualisation, in the absence of sufficient literary material, through the lens of Emil Hartmann’s piano trio op. 10. The research used a three-pronged methodological approach in order to construct the narrative around Hartmann’s life and composition. Through a structured process of using practice-based research to analyse the creative process undertaken by the practitioners, alongside a micro-historical and analytical methodology, the study builds layers of understanding to inform Hartmann’s narrative, and thus provides interpretational insight into the execution of the work. The research finds that, although it is possible to interpret a musical work based on the musical score, there are layers of depth which cannot be accessed without a contextual understanding of the composer and the conditions in which the composition was written. Through forming the narrative on Emil Hartmann and his piano trio, the research uses the methodology to highlight a method which can be undertaken in the absence of contextual knowledge, and thus presents a contextual understanding of Emil Hartmann’s narrative. With the constructed knowledge, the author uses the findings based on the methodological approaches to weave a narrative around the life of Emil Hartmann. The stability of the demand for money has been a recurring area of interest of empirical research on the South African economy. Underlying this interest in the behavior of money demand is the potential role of movement in monetary aggregates as indicators of future developments in inflation. Specifically, if a stable relationship exists between the demand for money and its determinants, changes in the money supply can provide useful information in the longer terms. While there has been considerable empirical research on estimating the money demand function for many less developed countries (LDCs), the currency demand function has been largely ignored. The study used secondary data sourced from the South African Reserve Bank, Statistics South Africa and Quantec. It also used annual data from 2000 to 2018 with an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) technique used for regression purposes. The study opted for this model because the variables were a mixture of me (0) and me (1). The empirical results show that income had a positive relationship with currency deposit ratio. In other words, when income increases, the amount of currency in circulation increases relative to deposits. Results show that there is a negative relationship between inflation and currency demand ratio. The SARB has to monitor changes in income in order to keep pace with the demand for cash.
