- Description: This is a phenomenological study designed to investigate English teachers’ understandings of the concept of English Across the Curriculum (EAC), and the extent to which such understandings inform their pedagogic practices at the Senior Primary phase, in a Namibian context. The study was located within the qualitative, interpretive paradigm, using a multi-method approach of semi-structured interviews, classroom observations and documentary evidence as research instruments. The participants were three English second-language teachers at a primary school in a suburban area. Findings from the study revealed that there were several understandings of EAC, and though there might have been an underlying understanding of the concept, classroom practices were incongruent with what EAC requires. It was also found that there are documents based on social constructivist and Genre Theory in the National Professional Standards for teachers, but teachers were not familiar with the content of these documents and they were not used by teachers as guiding documents on how they need to implement EAC. It is recommended that English teachers receive continuous professional development courses on language development theories and EAC, as well as specific training to implement EAC so that “every teacher can be a language teacher”.

- Description: The primary goal of the research is to examine the reasons for the emergence of - hip-hop-based youth protest music and satirical video comedy in Zimbabwe in a context where democratic and media practice has been restricted. The study examines the strategies and platforms that the young urban-based, musicians and cultural activists employ as they contest the meta-narrative of political nationalists who control the public mass media. The study recognises culture as a site of struggle and seeks to tease out the meaning of specific art forms (‘conscious’ hip-hop music and faux-news satire) in this very specific period of Zimbabwe’s history. The study proposes that the rise of these new forms of hip-hop based protest music, poetry and satirical comedy indicate how through the production and circulation of popular culture, ordinary Africans are able to debate pertinent issues that are marginalised by the official media channels. The study thus sees these artists as organic intellectuals who use alternative media to engage with different publics as they seek to counter hegemonic discourses.

It also provides highlights from the South African Higher Education system for the past year. This edition will focus on research and the internationalisation of research in the South African context. Study South Africa has established itself as the international mouthpiece for South African universities and without missing a beat has been produced by volunteers who, with enthusiasm, have dedicated their time and intellect to promote Higher Education Internationalisation as well as to promote South Africa as a knowledge destination for students, academics and professional staff. It is a special privilege and honour to write the introductory message for this 15th edition of Study South Africa as President of IEASA and Editor of the publication. In an era where global re-organisation is dominating the Higher Education scene and new alliances are formed to emulate the new geopolitical landscape, we need to take note of all the challenges facing Higher Education Internationalisation. A number of trends can be identified as major influences on Higher Education on a global scale. I will focus on some of those trends affecting Higher Education in emerging economies and the developing world. The first of these trends is the focus on regional and south-south cooperation. South African universities indicated their intent to further develop closer relationships with universities in Africa through their participation in the re-thinking of Africa’s future during the African Higher Education Summit on the Revitalisation of Higher Education for Africa’s future, in Dakar, Senegal during March 2015. The vision agreed upon during the summit is to ‘develop a high quality, massive, vibrant, diverse, differentiated, innovative, autonomous and socially responsible Higher Education sector. This sector will be a driving force to achieving the vision outlined in the Agenda 2063 by the African Union with a commitment to a shared strategic framework for the inclusive growth, sustainable development and global strategy to optimise the use of Africa’s resources for the benefit of all Africans’. The role of universities would be to develop closer cooperation as well as to advance research with a focus on innovation and sustainable economic growth that will integrate African economies as equal partners in the world economy. It is clear from the vision that although the emphasis should be on inter-African collaboration, collaboration with institutions outside the African continent should not be excluded to achieve the knowledge creation needed to achieve Agenda 2063. Another Higher Education Internationalisation trend in South Africa is the development of closer cooperation within the BRICS countries. The agreements reached and strategies agreed to during the BRICS Summit in Ufa, and included in the Ufa Declaration of 17 June 2015, open doors to future collaborations between BRICS universities. It is envisaged that in the next year the constituent meeting of the BRICS University Network and the establishment of the BRICS Universities League will provide the necessary framework for future collaboration amongst universities from the BRICS member countries. It is imperative that organisations like IEASA and the Brazilian FAUBAI play a key role in the establishment and function of the above mentioned networks. We can provide the necessary support and leadership to other member countries where Higher Education Internationalisation is still at the early stages of conceptualisation and organisation. It will be important to make effective use of the occasion of the Global Conference on Higher Education Internationalisation, scheduled to take place in South Africa in August 2016, to debate and set the future agenda for the BRICS University Network in relation to the rest of the world. It is also vital that the BRICS universities as well as the universities in Africa integrate fully with the rest of the world instead of developing a separate grouping. , 15th Edition

- Description: Migrant labour constitutes one of the perennial problems of the political economy of the Southern African region. The movement of people between their home countries and the gold mines in South Africa is over a hundred years old. In this sense, labour migrancy predates apartheid, and is now threatening to outlive it. Migrants working in South Africa make up a sizable proportion of the total wage earning population of the neighbouring countries (Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique and Malawi). Their entrenched dependence on migrant-based revenue has made them vulnerable to fluctuations in labour flows to the gold mines (Davies, 1992) The developments since the first quarter of 1988 have altered the terms of debate on migrant labour. With the independence of Namibia and the establishment of a new government in South Africa, to name but a few, the pattern of future regional cooperation has become a central issue. Likewise, the debate about labour migrancy has entered a new phase. Given the current political changes, and yet to take place, this study constitutes a modest attempt to contribute to the debate by examining the prospects of restructuring of labour migrancy to the gold mining industry. The central aim of this undertaking will be to establish what the future holds for the foreign component of the labour force. The focus here will be on the emerging debates in this area, policy pronouncements by major stakeholders, the Chamber of Mines and the new Government of National Unity. However, an informed forecast on the future of labour migrancy is possible only if we establish the conditions that created it in the first place; how it has been constructed overtime; and the successive moments of transformation in the system. In this regard, this study will locate the origins and development of labour migration in its proper historical context ~ before drawing conclusions about the future of the system. In this scholarly pursuit one does not pretend to break a new ground but rather to re-interpret the current literature on migration and establish whether the current pattern of labour migration will change. The research will be based mainly on secondary materials, drawing extensively on published materials, journals and articles.

- Description: Our National Congress is the highest decision making body of the Union. Its main task is to adopt resolutions that become the policies of NUMSA. These policies guide the union on how to act until the next Congress. After previous Congresses, we have only published the adopted resolutions. But this has meant that our members have lost out on the lively debates that have taken place during the Congress. In this booklet, we try and bring the Congress alive for you. We give you the full text of the General Secretary’s report, the debates as they took place, word for word. What was decided on the Alliance? Why do we want “nationalisation without compensation”? What was the decision on the Working Class Party? The final resolutions that were adopted are there for you to see. Extracts from speeches of various speakers are also given. Two key issues - the contents of the Reconstruction Accord and Restructuring Industry - will continue to be discussed in the Union. (The documents are included; see pages 65-82) Congress mandated the next Central Committee in October 1993 to take decisions on these issues. Use the booklet to find out for yourself what was said. You will be able to see what were the reasons given for the different positions. This will help you explain to members why NUMSA has adopted these resolutions. You will also see how democracy takes place. In some cases, compromises were reached, in other cases there was no compromise and the motion had to be put to the vote. Comrades, as our new President, Cde Tom, said in the Congress - “Our primary duty is to serve the interests of our members and those who have elected us to represent them. It is therefore necessary for us to be accountable to them in shaping the policies of the union. Most of the time we do not consult our members when we debate issues - even on minor issues we leave them behind It is very dangerous for us to create a distance between ourselves and our members. The members must not follow but must be there with us. We must remember our base is the factory floor.’ Use this booklet as a tool to get rid of that distance between you and the members. Use it to help you understand the positions that NUMSA has adopted as its policies. The General Secretary’s Report also gives a full picture of how NUMSA functions and gives useful background information to many of the discussions. The Tables mentioned are at the back of the book; see page 83 to the end. In this first section the debates and the speeches have been put into shaded boxes so it is easier for you to read. - Description: The purpose of this study was to investigate the hermeneutic value of the Daseinsanalytic approach to dream interpretation in the process of psychotherapy. After delineating the Daseinsanalytic view on dream interpretation, with emphasis on the conceptualization of Medard Boss, the study explores the usefulness and validity of the case study as a method of investigating the content and process of psychotherapy. A psychodynamic formulation of the presenting problem is based on the conceptualization of the nature and etiology of neurosis as delineated by Andras Angyal, with particular reference to the pattern of noncommitment. The dreams included in the case material are then examined to determine to what degree they facilitated insight into the subjective experience and phenomenological existence of the dreamer, and what effect the dream interpretation based on the Daseinsanalytic approach had on the process of therapy. It is established that a phenomenological understanding of the client's dreams corresponds with his subjective experience of his emotional and existential condition, and that positive changes in the content of the dreams during the course of therapy correspond with overt, observable changes in his behaviour, ideation and mood. Based on these findings, the case study leads to the conclusion that the Daseinsanalytic approach to dream interpretation has hermeneutic value in the process of psychotherapy.

- Description: Until a few years ago, it was widely held that, ‘apartheid cannot be reformed, it can only be destroyed’. Today, all participants in the negotiation process are agreed that one fundamental characteristic of the social order must be preserved: the new South Africa is to be a capitalist society; the productive wealth of the country will be the private property of a small number of capitalists, and the vast majority will try to sell their labour for a wage to capitalists who will buy it only when that labour can contribute to their profits. There is still disagreement about how small or large the number of capitalists will be; about the colour of their skins; about who they will appoint to manage their mines, banks, factories and farms for them; about the rules that will govern disputes over wages; and above all about the use that the state will make of the taxes paid from their profits. There is also disagreement about the extent to which capitalism can afford to meet popular needs. But all of these disagreements take place within the framework of a common belief that the future is capitalist. The aim of this seminar series, held by the Marxist Theory Seminar at the University of the Western Cape in April/May 1993, was to pose the question: What are the limits of social reform in a capitalist South Africa? Can the fundamental needs and aspirations of the vast majority of South Africans be met within a capitalist framework? Very often these questions are brushed aside with the argument that, given the present balance of local and international forces, there is no alternative to capitalism in SA today. Even if this argument is correct, it still remains necessary to ask what can be achieved within the framework of the capitalist society to which there is no alternative. If that question is not posed in the most rigorous way, all kinds of illusions will be created about what the future holds in store for us. The question of the limits of capitalist reform in SA is posed as it concerns five different areas; democracy, education, economic growth and employment, land and the oppression of women. What will democracy mean in a new SA which depends on foreign investment and capitalist profitability? Can the education crisis be resolved while meeting the needs of capitalist growth? Will economic growth take place in a capitalist SA, and will this lead to the creation of jobs and a higher standard of living for the majority? Can land be restored to the dispossessed, the virtual slavery of millions of farm workers ended, and land used in a way that produces food for all? What are the prospects of ending the oppression of women in a capitalist South Africa? MTS does not believe that there are simple answers to these questions. Certainly, these questions cannot be answered by a general condemnation of the inequality and inhumanity of capitalism. In each case, it is necessary to give clear answers to such questions as: Has capitalism served historically to support the struggle for democracy or to oppose it? How has it affected education in SA? What are the present interests of the capitalists in solving the land question, or giving women control of their lives? To what extent can capitalism be forced to make concessions - to provide jobs, for example - by the struggles of the oppressed? In the past, capitalism has shown itself to be much more flexible than its critics have supposed. That does not mean that capitalism can do anything it likes, nor that the working class can force it to meet whatever demands it has. One of the indispensable insights of Marxism is that processes of social change are not determined by the intentions or integrity of political leaders, but rather by the fundamental relationships of society and the ability of the major classes to pursue their interests created by these relationships.
