- Description: The prevalence of Search Engine Poisoning in trending topics and popular search terms on the web within search engines is investigated. Search Engine Poisoning is the act of manipulating search engines in order to display search results from websites infected with malware. Research done between February and August 2012, using both manual and automated techniques, shows us how easily the criminal element manages to insert malicious content into web pages related to popular search terms within search engines. In order to provide the reader with a clear overview and understanding of the motives and the methods of the operators of Search Engine Poisoning campaigns, an in-depth review of automated and semi-automated web exploit kits is done, as well as looking into the motives for running these campaigns. Three high profile case studies are examined, and the various Search Engine Poisoning campaigns associated with these case studies are discussed in detail to the reader. From February to August 2012, data was collected from the top trending topics on Google’s search engine along with the top listed sites related to these topics, and then passed through various automated tools to discover if these results have been infiltrated by the operators of Search Engine Poisoning campaings, and the results of these automated scans are then discussed in detail. During the research period, manual searching for Search Engine Poisoning campaigns was also done, using high profile news events and popular search terms. These results are analysed in detail to determine the methods of attack, the purpose of the attack and the parties behind it

- Description: The objective of the study was to investigate the right of the South African Government to tax the income earned by a foreign company when rendering services in South Africa to a South African associated enterprise on a recurrent basis, together with the right to tax the amounts paid to the employees of the permanent establishment for services rendered in South Africa. At the same time the research investigated whether the services rendered by a foreign company to an associated enterprise in South Africa on a recurrent basis would constitute a permanent establishment, as this is essential before South Africa may tax either the foreign company or the employees of the permanent establishment (where such employees are not resident in South Africa).The research was conducted by means of a critical analysis of documentary data and data from a limited number of interviews with academics and the authors of textbooks and articles. In order to limit the scope of the research, a number of assumptions were made. Conflicting viewpoints underlying certain of these assumptions were discussed. Some of the important conclusions reached are that the provisions of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties should be taken into account when interpreting South African legislation (including Double Tax Agreements), and that the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Commentary may be relied upon when interpreting OECD based Double Tax Agreements in South Africa. No conclusion was reached on whether to apply an ambulatory or a static basis of interpreting the OECD Commentary, however. The final conclusion of the research is that the services rendered in South Africa on a recurrent basis would be geographically and commercially coherent and consequently meet the "location test'. It is clear that as the services are rendered regularly and recurrently, they would be regarded as having the necessary permanence and would meet the 'duration test'. The place of business would therefore be regarded as being fixed (having the necessary degree of permanence). As the services would be rendered at the place of business of the South African entity, they would be regarded as being rendered 'through' the place of business and the foreign entity would be regarded as having a permanent establishment in South Africa (as defined in Article 5(1) of the OECD Model Tax Convention}. The South African Government would therefore be entitled to tax the income attributable to the permanent establishment and the income earned by the non resident employees, who rendered services in South Africa for the permanent establishment. - Description: The aim of the study was to evaluate school children’s attitudes towards Physical Education in selected Mutare city schools. In order for the children to benefit from the Physical Education program, the study hypothesized that children must develop the right attitudes towards Physical Education. This observation has also been emphasized in other studies that children, who possess the right attitude towards Physical Education, develop positive attitudes towards physical activities. This suggestion has also been reported by Portman, (2003) and McKenzie (2003) that one of the benefits of Physical Education is sustained participation in physical activities outside the school. This study involved 400 children from Mutare Junior, Chancellor, Zamba, Dangamvura, Sakubva, Chikanga, Mutanda and Murahwa Primary Schools in Mutare city. The children’s age ranged between 12 - 14 years old. The primary data were collected from questionnaires, interviews and focus group discussions, while secondary data were based on related literature review. The results indicated that the teacher, curriculum content and delivery, the learning environment, siblings, type of school, location of residences, proximity of facilities and support from parents were some of the factors associated with children’s attitudes towards Physical Education and Physical Activity at school and home respectively. In many ways, these factors affected children’s sustainable participation in physical activities after school.

Water and feed was provided at ad libitum. The feeding phases were, prestarter (0-7 Days), starter (8-18 Days), grower (19-28 Days), finisher (29-35 Days). The four TRTS contained graded levels of MOLM at 1000g/ton, 750g/ton, 500g/ton, and 0g/ton (control), respectively. The birds were slaughtered at 35 days of age. Breast muscles were sampled for meat, ultimate pH (pHu ), colour, drip loss over a 7 days shelf-life test. After each day’s test sub-samples were dipped in liquid nitrogen and kept at -180 C for thiobarbituric acid reactive substances determination. On Day1 and Day 7 extra sub-samples were also kept at -180 C for fatty acids analysis.The TRTS had no effect on average feed intake (AFI), feed conversion efficiency (FCE), and on average daily gain (ADG). Slaughter weight (SW), carcass weight (CW), dressing percentage and gizzard weight (GW) values were similar in all TRTS. Liver weight (LW), heart weight (HW), and gastro-intestinal fat (GIF) differed in all the TRTS, with treatment 2 having the highest value of HW (28.3±2.55), and LW (44.2±1.60) was the highest on treatment 4 . The pH values in all TRTS were constant from Day1 to Day5, reached peak on Day6, and then declined on Day7. Meat from broilers given treatment 1 with MOLM (1000g/ton) had the highest lightness (L*) values. The redness (a*) values were the highest in meat from treatment 2 (750g/ton MOLM). Treatments had no effect on yellowness (b*) values and on drip loss of the breasts. During storage L* values were high from Day1 to Day5 and decreased from Day6 to Day7. Drip loss increased with storage time as expected. Treatment 4 (control) had the highest proportions of poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (30.3±1.87). Treatment 1 (1000g/ton) had the highest proportion of saturated fatty acids (SFA) (60.9±1.87). Treatment 1 (1000g/ton) had the highest proportion of SFA (60.9±4.30). Financial liberalization, financial development and economic growth: the case for South Africa

- Description: Financial liberalization in South Africa was a process that took the form of various legal reforms very a long period of time. This study uses quarterly financial data from 1969 quarter one to 2009 quarter four to analyse this process. The data used was pertinent to the financial liberalization theorem by McKinnon (1973) and Shaw (1973). The examination of the relationships between the various macro economic variables has important implications for effective policy formulation. The empirical analysis is carried out in four phases: the preliminary analysis, the principal component analysis (PCA), the cointegration analysis and pair wise Granger causality tests. The preliminary analysis examines trends over the sample period and reports the on the correlation between the selected variables. The PCA analysis was used to create indexes for financial liberalization, taking into account the phase wise nature of legal reforms. The generated index was representative of the process of financial liberalization from 1969 to 2009. A financial development index was also created using the various traditional measures of financial development and through PCA which investigated interrelationships among the variables according to their common sources of movement. Cointegration analysis is carried out using the Johansen cointegration procedure which investigates whether there is long-run comovement between South African economic growth and the selected macroeconomic variables. Where cointegration is found, Vector Error-Correction Models (VECMs) are estimated in order to examine the short-run adjustments. For robustness, many control variables were added into the model. The results showed that there are positive long run relationships between economic growth and financial liberalization, financial development and a negative relationship with interest rates. The Granger results suggested that the MS hypothesis does not manifest accurately in the South African data. The implications of the results were that financial liberalization has had positive effects on economic growth and thus any impediments to full financial liberalization must be removed albeit with considerations towards employment and local productivity. Financial development also possessed positive long run relationships with economic growth, although results differed based on the financial development proxy used. Thus, financial development must be improved primarily through liberalizing the banking sector and spurring savings.

- Description: Empowerment of women in leadership and in particular, school leadership has been the focus of the Namibian government and the country since independence in 1990. Different policies and laws, post‐independence, make provision for women empowerment and leadership in a range of organisations and institutions throughout the country. However, reports on gender equity in leadership positions suggest that Namibia is not really moving towards these policy goals at a sufficiently quick pace. A lot still needs to be achieved in terms of transforming the gender stereotyping in Namibia, which still suffers from the legacy of gender discrimination of the apartheid era. Modern‐day academic authors and journalists portray an increasing interest in an awareness of the advantages of women leadership. Women are increasingly perceived to have leadership styles more suitable for contemporary conditions than men. It is against this backdrop that this study sought to investigate women leadership in the Otjiwarongo circuit in the Otjozondjupa educational region in Namibia. The study used a qualitative, interpretive research paradigm. It adopted a case study approach. The primary participants consisted of four women principals in the Otjiwarongo circuit and the secondary participants included four women education officers from the same circuit. Semi‐structured interviews, a focus group interview and observation were applied as methods for collecting data and the data collection period was just over six weeks. Data analysis was done through coding and identification of categories. The findings revealed that women principals possessed the qualities of commitment, good communication and are passionate about their work, which are qualities normally associated with effective leadership. In terms of their role in their schools, they emerged as democratic leaders who involved all stakeholders in the decision making process through consensus. In addition, they demonstrated distributive and servant leadership in their interactions with stakeholders. The main challenge to the leadership position of these women principals seemed to be the stereotypical view held, that as women, they had to work twice as hard as men at leading schools. - Description: Empowerment of women in leadership and in particular, school leadership has been the focus of the Namibian government and the country since independence in 1990. Different policies and laws, post‐independence, make provision for women empowerment and leadership in a range of organisations and institutions throughout the country. However, reports on gender equity in leadership positions suggest that Namibia is not really moving towards these policy goals at a sufficiently quick pace. A lot still needs to be achieved in terms of transforming the gender stereotyping in Namibia, which still suffers from the legacy of gender discrimination of the apartheid era. Modern‐day academic authors and journalists portray an increasing interest in an awareness of the advantages of women leadership. Women are increasingly perceived to have leadership styles more suitable for contemporary conditions than men. It is against this backdrop that this study sought to investigate women leadership in the Otjiwarongo circuit in the Otjozondjupa educational region in Namibia. The study used a qualitative, interpretive research paradigm. It adopted a case study approach. The primary participants consisted of four women principals in the Otjiwarongo circuit and the secondary participants included four women education officers from the same circuit. Semi‐structured interviews, a focus group interview and observation were applied as methods for collecting data and the data collection period was just over six weeks. Data analysis was done through coding and identification of categories. The findings revealed that women principals possessed the qualities of commitment, good communication and are passionate about their work, which are qualities normally associated with effective leadership. In terms of their role in their schools, they emerged as democratic leaders who involved all stakeholders in the decision making process through consensus. In addition, they demonstrated distributive and servant leadership in their interactions with stakeholders. The main challenge to the leadership position of these women principals seemed to be the stereotypical view held, that as women, they had to work twice as hard as men at leading schools. The study recommended that people oriented leadership styles, such as the ones enacted by the women principals in this study, are highly recommended for effective leadership in the 21st century.

Challenges such as lack of parental commitment to the school, illiteracy among adults and a communication breakdown between the school and its parents are still rife. The school leadership addresses this challenge by participating in village meetings and utilizing them as a platform to discuss school matters with parents. Further research on this topic would be useful, including such institutions as rural primary schools, private schools and colleges in the Caprivi Region, as very little research has been done on leadership roles in schools in the rural areas of Namibia.

Other researchers claim that learners' career choice is limited by their potential and school performance. The existing literature also suggests that girls have lower self-esteem and levels of achievement than boys. This research seeks to gain insight into high school girls' perceived academic and vocational prospects. The research was carried out in an interpretive paradigm. Six secondary school female learners from one school participated in the study. Semistructured interviews were the core method of data collection, supplemented by questionnaires and a focus group interview. As teenagers, the girls were expected to already have started to think about their future hopes and dreams. The findings revealed that all the girls seemed to experience school as a place where they could acquire knowledge about what they needed to make them autonomous and successful in adult life. For them, their parents remained their major significant others. They regarded fear of poverty as a major factor motivating them to achieve their educational and vocational aspirations. Peer pressure appeared not to be a major determinant of these girls' successes in school. The girls believed that there is a relationship between their academic performance and their future vocational choice. In addition, the girls did not see boys as a threat to their climbing the ladder of success.

The South African state, however, despite its theoretical commitment to gender equality, has failed substantially to engage with the issue of childcare and women’s citizenship. This is problematic because in failing to envisage a role for itself in supporting women with their responsibility for childcare, the state has not only neglected its Constitutional commitments to gender equality, but it has also failed to realise the benefits that could potentially accrue to children if women’s access to economic citizenship is not hampered by childcare. Recognising this problem, this thesis attempts to engender some debate as to how the South African state could feasibly correct this failure. In doing so, it uses feminist political theory as a basis and takes a critical view of the two childcare policies that have dominated the debate over women’s citizenship and childcare in Western liberal democracies – socialised care and the neofamilialist model. In concluding it attempts to provide an idea of what feasible, state-based childcare policies could look like in present-day South Africa.

Symplasmic pathway in phloem loading and unloading in source and sink leaves of Zea mays L. as evidenced under normal and elevated CO₂ conditions

- Description: Zea mays plants kept at ambient (ca 375ppm) and elevated CO₂ (ca 650 to 700ppm) were used to examine the possibility of a symplasmic loading, unloading and transport pathway in dark-adapted and illuminated (200μmolm⁻²sec⁻¹ ) sink and source leaves. 5,6-carboxyfluorescein diacetate was introduced into the mesophyll cells and symplasmic transfer observed 3h after application. In sink and source leaves exposed to ambient CO₂ and illuminated at 200 molm-2sec-1, the fluorescence front was observed approximately 3cm from the point of application, while in dark-adapted plants, the fluorescence front was observed approximately 1cm from the point of application. Under elevated CO₂ conditions the fluorescence front in illuminated plants appeared to transport faster moving approximately 5cm from the point of application, and in dark-adapted plants, only 3cm from the point of application. Based on the increase in 5,6-CF accumulation under elevated CO₂ conditions, the present study suggests that there was an increase in capacity for assimilate loading and transport under elevated CO₂ conditions. In source leaves, 5,6-CFDA was taken up into the mesophyll cells, loaded symplasmically and transported basipetally. In sink leaves 5,6- CFDA was taken up from basal mesophyll and after symplasmic loading, was transported acropetally where it was offloaded into the younger immature sink region. Transport in the sieve tubes was confirmed by using aniline blue, which was applied 3h after 5,6-CF transport. Aniline blue coupled with 5,6-CF transport studies showed that the sieve tubes of both cross and longitudinal veins are involved in symplasmic unloading, loading and transport processes in sink and source leaves. Apoplasmic uptake of 5,6-CFDA by cut leaves showed that after apoplasmic transport via the transpiration stream, 5,6-CFDA was offioaded to the xylem parenchyma where it was metabolically cleaved , releasing fluorescent 5,6-CF into the xylem parenchyma. Transverse sections cut after 3h of uptake were observed after 120 and 180 min suggesting that a retrieval of solutes occurs from the xylem to the xylem parenchyma, bundle sheath, phloem parenchyma and to the th in-walled sieve tubes. It was not possible to determine if the thick-walled sieve tubes were involved or if they took up 5,6-CF. Given the available data on loading and offioading of assimilates in sink and source leaves respectively, this study demonstrated that a slow symplasmic pathway exists from the mesophyll to the phloem, and that offloading from the phloem in sink leaves can occur via a symplasmic route.

The Act furthermore, and more importantly for this case study, posits that decision-making should be democratic in nature and our schools should eventually become governed in a collaborative and co-operative manner. Other policy texts such as the Labour Relations Act and the South African Constitution canonise the demand for a democratic South African society. This study investigates how democratic decision-making practices are taking place in an East London Secondary School namely Ebenezer Majombozi High. Even though distinct links exist between management and governance arms of schools, this study concentrates predominantly on decision-making within the school governing body and touches briefly on management thinking trends as a theoretical background to the kind of management at the school. What makes the school interesting as a case study is its rich history and its location in a deprived and impoverished township environment. The school was also part of the ex-Department of Education and Training, the black educational department of the past apartheid state. The kind of research undertaken was in the form of unstructured personal interviews with influential stakeholders at the school. Some of these stakeholders fonn part of the school governing body and the questions asked probed forms of governance at the school and how decision-making impacted on the overall school governance. The research findings acknowledges that decision-making does occur democratically at the school but that the practical implementation of positive consensual decisions are rarely realized. The school governing body only meets to deal with crises underpinned by a lack of learning and teaching and has not even debated the policies within the South African Schools Act. The study also argues that only by building capacity within the school and empowering the stakeholders, can constructive participation by all become a reality.

The research findings acknowledges that decision-making does occur democratically at the school but that the practical implementation of positive consensual decisions are rarely realized. The school governing body only meets to deal with crises underpinned by a lack of learning and teaching and has not even debated the policies within the South African Schools Act. The study also argues that only by building capacity within the school and empowering the stakeholders, can constructive participation by all become a reality.

This study investigates how democratic decision-making practices are taking place in an East London Secondary School namely Ebenezer Majombozi High. Even though distinct links exist between management and governance arms of schools, this study concentrates predominantly on decision-making within the school governing body and touches briefly on management thinking trends as a theoretical background to the kind of management at the school. What makes the school interesting as a case study is its rich history and its location in a deprived and impoverished township environment. The school was also part of the ex-Department of Education and Training, the black educational department of the past apartheid state. The kind of research undertaken was in the form of unstructured personal :interviews with influential stakeholders at the school. Some of these stakeholders fonn part of the school governing body and the questions asked probed forms of governance at the school and how decision-making impacted on the overall school governance. Seasonal changes in pituitary and plasma prolactin concentrations, and the role of Prolactin in the control of delayed implantation in female Miniopterus schreibersii

- Description: Mammotropes were successfully identified in the anterior pituitary gland of Miniopterus schreibersii using immunocytochemical (ICC) staining at the light and electron microscopy level. Mammotropes were distributed throughout the gland, were polygonal in shape and during secretory activity contained numerous large secretory granules (350 - 800nm). Using double ICC labelling, prolactin and growth hormone were never co-localiszed and found in individual cells only. Plasma prolactin levels were successfully measured on a monthly basis using radioimmunoassay and monthly pituitary prolactin levels were quantified using morphometric analysis of immunogold ICC staining and densitometry with polyacrylamide gels. Seasonal changes in the ultrastructure of mammotropes, and pituitary and plasma prolactin concentrations in female Miniopterus schreibersii indicated that there was an increase in prolactin secretion during the second half of the period of delayed implantation and that prolactin secretion remained elevated during normal embryonic development and lactation. This suggests that prolactin may be part of the luteotropic and lactogenic complex, and that the hormone might be responsible for terminating the period of delayed implantation. The latter is supported by experiments, where exogenous prolactin initiated precocious implantation during early delayed implantation, and treatment with bromocryptine (which inhibits prolactin synthesis) retarded implantation. Activation of mammotropes to synthesise prolactin and an increase of plasma prolactin levels occurred shortly after the winter solstice (21 June), suggesting that increasing daylength may be the environmental cue, which terminates the period of delayed implantation in Miniopterus schreibersii.

The Springfontein prospect : a case study of a tertiary age epithermal hot spring deposit in the Eastern Cape

- Description: The Springfontein Prospect is a Tertiary aged epithermal Hot Spring deposit that was investigated for precious metal mineralisation. It is located some 14 kilometres due west of East London (Cape Province), within Beaufort Group sediments and Karoo dolerite. Prior to the work described in this case study, the location was known for it's abundant plant fossils and barite mineralisation. A gossan sample collected near the main barite vein returned 1,07 g/t Au and 26,6 g/t Ag. Remote sensing studies of the site revealed a set of north-south lineaments paralleling the barite vein system. Geophysical surveys confirmed this orientation and revealed an extensive alteration system underlying the prominent sinter terrace. A detailed soil geochemical survey returned elevated values in the classical epithermal gold mineralisation element suite (Rg, Tl, As, Bi, Sb, Te, Mo, Ba and Pb - Bonham, 1986). Trenching of geochemical anomalies revealed zones of intense argillic alteration and vein stockworks). Four percussion and three diamond drill holes intersected a 'feeder-fissure' system of veins, alteration and brecciation, but failed to repeat gold levels seen at surface. Mineralogical and petrographic studies of the cores determined temperatures of formation of important indicator minerals (e.g. adularia and zeolites). Litho-geochemical work revealed mercury (and thallium) to be most elevated in the feeder systems. Stratigraphic and paleontological observations determined that the Springfontein Tertiary deposit was clearly different to the other siliceous (silcrete) units that crop out in the Eastern Cape region. A number of distinguished visitors to the prospect, with epithermal deposit experience, confirmed that the characteristics and dimensions of the system is within those of mineralised deposits elsewhere. A brief review of current epithermal models are presented. The conceptual geological model for the Springfontein prospect evolved through the exploration programme. The final consensus is that it best fits Bonham's (1986) alkalic model and the Tertiary epithermal event was sustained by rifting associated with the break-up of Gondwanaland.

Apart from anything else I hesitated to enter the arena in which so many had already collided violently and where my own prejudices might be enlisted on one side or the other. It became evident however that Colenso the Controversialist, the Theologian could not be dissociated from Colenso the missionary, without giving an inadequate, and even misleading history of his missionary activities. The Controversy had a serious and deleterious effect on his missionary work, and no estimate of the value of a missionary's labours would be valid without some consideration of his teaching, more especially when his orthodoxy is suspect. I have therefore dealt as briefly as I could with these questions in Chapter V because of their relevance, and because to produce a work on an ecclesiastic without some reference to his tenets would be like writing a biography of Louis Botha without any allusion to his political 'faith', or of Wellington, without any mention of Waterloo. it would represent a distortion of history to write about a Missionary Bishop as though he were an amateur politician, or of a missionary as though he were interested only in finance and administration.
