- Description: The study aims to map the transition of a traditional university into an entrepreneurial university. The concept of the entrepreneurial university has been established as a game changer in the development and innovation spheres at higher education institutions worldwide. In the year 2002, the South African Higher Education sector embarked on a modelling and redefining journey which gave birth to the National Plan for Higher Education. The Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education has undertaken work done on the entrepreneurial university which gave rise to the mapping that breeds ground towards policy. This study sought to investigate whether there is a conducive environment at Rhodes University, with an entrepreneurial climate to develop institutional capabilities and build new networks. The research highlights the current direction of Rhodes University and elaborates on the potential for the transition towards an entrepreneurial university. An overview of the entrepreneurial university was provided through an analysis of literature, which dominated in the more developed countries compared to South Africa. The researcher adopted a qualitative research study to capture the direct experiences of the individuals that are in the institution. A questionnaire was designed using the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Guiding Framework and the direct perceptions of academics from the university were documented. The objectives were firstly, to explore elements of leadership and governance that enhance transformation of Higher Education Institution from a traditional university towards an entrepreneurial university. Secondly, to investigate internal resources that enhance Organisational Capacity with specific reference to people and incentives. Lastly, to determine how Teaching and Learning strengthen entrepreneurship development. The interviews revealed that the challenges faced by the institution were closely linked to those recognized by existing literature. What was interesting to note, limited funding and support were regarded as the most significant problems, closely followed by unskilled people and lack of infrastructure. It is suggested that cultivating and nurturing an entrepreneurial culture is of paramount importance together with the creation of a policy framework. Furthermore, the study concluded with practical recommendations proposed to management regarding the three strategic lenses. The research also illustrated that Rhodes University may not be viewed as being entrepreneurial but certainly has pockets of entrepreneurship and innovative activities.

- Description: Introduction: Sports participation has been associated with a number of benefits to young athletes, outside of purely physical health. One of the key components of a successful sports talent identification and development program is effective coaching. A foundation of effective coaching is the coach’s knowledge which can be developed through formal, non-formal and informal means of education. The majority of coach education literature has however focused on coaches from developed countries. Limited studies have looked at the educational experiences and needs of South African coaches, particularly football coaches. The purpose of the current investigation is to establish Local Football Association (LFA) coaches’ perceptions of their educational backgrounds and what knowledge they deem important to be effective coaches. Method: A mixed methods approach was used in which (n=25) Makana LFA coaches answered a questionnaire with the aim of identifying their educational histories and what their current educational needs were. A semi-structured interview was also implemented in which some of the respondents (n=4) were asked more in-depth questions around the same topics, to create a more complete coaching profile. Results: The questionnaire responses highlighted that only 8% of the coaches possess a formal coaching qualification and all of the coaches work on a volunteer basis. Previous experience as a player is the chief source of knowledge for Makana LFA coaches. Not having enough available time is the main perceived barrier for 56% of participants to seeking out further educational opportunities. Fundamentals of coaching was selected by 56% of the coaches as a key subject they want to learn more about. Findings from the interview demonstrate that participants coach multiple teams and often have to rely on senior players to take up assistant coach positions, as well as managing their time effectively to work with all their teams. Informal education is the main source of information for the coaches which includes asking for advice, reading coaching manuals or having a mentor. The coaches value all 3 forms of education, however non-formal workshops are favoured. This is due to all of the coaches already having some form of informal learning experience and formal learning opportunities being too costly to pursue. A combination of lectures, practical sessions and group discussions is desired as a delivery method of coaching knowledge. Discussion: The level of coaching qualifications in the LFA is low, this may have significant implications for talent identification and development in the Sarah Baartman region. All the coaches are volunteer coaches, who primarily rely on informal means of coaching education. ‘Time’ was indicated to be a major barrier, to coaches seeking out educational opportunities. Coaches indicated that they would benefit from a coaching program if it took into consideration their needs, such as wanting to learn more about interpersonal and intrapersonal awareness. Conclusion: If local coaching programs are to be effective, they must reflect the educational needs of their community.

- Description: Currently there is a perception in South Africa that projects undertaken on parcels of restituted land are experiencing a much higher failure than success rate. There are, however, a few projects that are reaping the rewards and uplifting their communities, as intended by the land redistribution program. One community in particular, located in Mpumalanga, called community A, is presently undertaking a development project. This development project is one of the most successful restituted land parcel projects ever in South Africa. The purpose of the study is to determine the critical success factors in this community development project that have allowed it to enjoy such high levels of success. Are these critical success factors different from the generic industry critical success factors and, if so, what are they? As informed through literature, the critical success factors focused on in this study are as follows: the influence of management, project communication, knowledge management, the role of senior management, business strategy, project success measurements, and training and development. For the empirical study, a physical questionnaire was handed to 35 management members currently employed in the community development project. The questionnaire requested the demographics of all participants and asked them to rate, using a five-point Likert scale, their perceptions of the present project activities and of the importance of the project activities mentioned in making the project successful. Participants had to indicate the extent to which they agreed with each statement in the questionnaire. The responses obtained from the survey were presented and analysed. The study found that the critical success factor “role of senior management” was the largest problem area in the restituted land development project. “Training and development opportunities” came in second, with both factor areas showing large variances. Recommendations have been given on how to address both these problematic areas in the development project and how future restituted land parcel projects can better utilize these factors to ensure successful project implementation and long-term project success.

- Description: The MeerKAT is the most sensitive radio telescope in its class, and it is important that systematic effects do not limit the dynamic range of the instrument, preventing this sensitivity from being harnessed for deep integrations. During commissioning, spurious artefacts were noted in the MeerKAT passband and the root cause was attributed to systematic errors in the digital signal path. Finite precision arithmetic used by the Polyphase Filterbank (PFB) was one of the main factors contributing to the spurious responses, together with bugs in the firmware. This thesis describes a software PFB simulator that was built to mimic the MeerKAT PFB and allow investigation into the origin and mitigation of the effects seen on the telescope. This simulator was used to investigate the effects in signal integrity of various rounding techniques, overflow strategies and dual polarisation processing in the PFB. Using the simulator to investigate a number of different signal levels, bit-width and algorithmic scenarios, it gave insight into how the periodic dips occurring in the MeerKAT passband were the result of the implementation using an inappropriate rounding strategy. It further indicated how to select the best strategy for preventing overflow while maintaining high quantization effciency in the FFT. This practice of simulating the design behaviour in the PFB independently of the tools used to design the DSP firmware, is a step towards an end-to-end simulation of the MeerKAT system (or any radio telescope using nite precision digital signal processing systems). This would be useful for design, diagnostics, signal analysis and prototyping of the overall instrument.

Unravelling the replication biology of Providence virus in a cell culturebased model system

- Description: There has been an increase in the number of viral outbreaks in the last decade; the majority of these are attributed to insect-human or animal-human transfer. Despite this awareness, there is limited understanding of the replication biology of the viruses causing the outbreaks and there are few model systems that are available to study RNA virus replication and viral persistence. In this study, we describe a Providence (PrV)-based model system to study virus replication biology. PrV is a single-stranded RNA virus that can cross Kingdom boundaries; it is capable of establishing a productive infection in insect and mammalian cell culture and it is also capable of replicating in plants. Only one other virus has been reported to infect a similar host range - the Nodavirus, Flock House virus (FHV). First, we performed a bioinformatic analysis of the PrV genome and validated the tools that were currently available to work with this model system in mammalian cells. Our data indicate that PrV infection of human cervical cancer (HeLa) cells results in the production of p130, p104/p40 and VCAP, albeit at low levels. While PrV replication in insect cells is associated with the Golgi apparatus and secretory vesicles, in HeLa cells, PrV replication is associated with the mitochondria. It is interesting to note that FHV replication factories are located on the outer mitochondrial membrane. In an attempt to study PrV virus replication in vitro, we adapted the BioID system reported by Roux et al. (2012). Here a promiscuous biotin ligase enzyme (BirA) was fused to a protein of interest and the expression of the fusion protein in mammalian cells resulted in the proximitybased biotinylation of proteins associated with the protein of interest. Using p40 as the protein of interest, we studied the fusion protein (BirA-p40) in transiently transfected HeLa cells and in a stable cell line, using western blot analysis and confocal microscopy. We faced challenges comparing the data collected using the two antibody-based detection techniques and the lack of BirA-p40 detection when using western analysis was attributed to the associated of p40 with detergent resistant membranes. BirA-p40 was subsequently expressed using in vitro coupled transcription/translation reactions, in the presence of excess biotin. While BirA-p40 was robustly expressed under these conditions, biotinylation of BirA-p40 was not detected. We attributed this to the conditions used in the experiments and given additional time, we would extend the duration of biotinylation, in vitro. PrV replication in mammalian cells was detectable using confocal microscopy however the levels of fluorescence were relatively low. The knowledge that p40 was associated with detergent resistant membranes led us to question the impact of detergent treatment of live cells on the detection of PrV replication. PrV-infected HeLa cells were treated with detergents with varying biochemical characteristics and the impact of these treatments on the detection of PrV replication were evaluated. We observed that linear and non-ionic detergents, namely NP-40 and Triton X-100, were most effective at enhancing the detection of viral replication in PrV-infected HeLa cells. Our data confirm that detergent treatment results in enhanced detection, and not enhanced PrV replication, in HeLa cells. The PrV-based model system can also be applied to the identification and analysis of potential broad-spectrum antiviral drugs in vitro. The latter application is particularly relevant considering the increase in the number of viral outbreaks over the last decade.

The PrV-based model system can also be applied to the identification and analysis of potential broad-spectrum antiviral drugs in vitro. Upon independence, the educational sector went through numerous reforms which were meant to transform education and to make it more democratic, whereby all stakeholders can broadly participate. In spite of these reforms, leadership of schools has remained a hierarchical system, where a principal who, as an individual, runs the school without recognition of the potential leadership of others. Recent studies on leadership have called for shared leadership, whereby leadership is a practice, permeable to learner leaders and not associated with individuals. This research study aims to explore learner leadership development in the Learner Representative Council (LRC) structure at a secondary school in Namibia. The motivation of this research study was twofold - firstly, my personal interest in learner leadership was aroused by my teaching experience. The second reason was due to my realisation that the area was under-researched in Namibia, hence I wanted to fill the existing gap on learner leadership. The study critically engaged learners and teachers to help me get an understanding of learner leadership and the factors enabling learner leadership development. I also found that challenges which resulted in contradictions, hampered leadership development. The study took an interventionist approach and second generation Cultural Historical Activity Theory was used to surface tensions and contradictions affecting learner leadership development. Change Laboratory workshops enabled the expansive learning process with the 12 LRC members. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, observation, document analysis and journaling. The study found that learner leadership was understood more in terms of traditional views of leadership, whereby a learner needed to possess certain qualities in order to lead. The findings further pointed out that the LRC members were mainly involved in managerial roles and not really leadership roles, as such, and they were not involved in decision-making at the school. Although provision for the LRC body is made in an Educational Act, historical and cultural forces account for teachers’ reluctance to support the LRC members, as well as for silence of learner voice. I hope that findings from this research study strengthen learner leadership structures in schools and contribute to the creation of knowledge on learner leadership in Namibia.

The deceptive trial revealed a significant (p<0.05) reduction in performance time, heart rate, power output and muscle activity after the 1000 m interval. The first 500 m interval had the fastest performance and highest power output in all trials. In all trials, RPE was highest at the end of the 2000 m, the greatest reading being obtained at the end of the control trial. During the first 1000 m of the deceptive trial, the dependant variables were similar to those in the control trial. Once the deception was revealed, there was a significant (p<0.05) reduction in the muscle activity, heart rate and power output. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that accurate end-point information is crucial to the development of an optimal pacing strategy, and ultimately to successful performance. Rowers tend to adopt the reverse J-shape pacing profile most often due to the tactical and physiological benefits offered by this strategy. Unknown or inaccurate end-point information resulted in performance decrements due to the uncertainty associated with the exercise bout.

Because of the high variability of E × B drift in low latitude regions, coupled with various processes that sometimes originate from high latitudes especially during geomagnetic storm conditions, it is challenging to develop accurate vertical drift models. This is despite the fact that there are very few instruments dedicated to provide electric field and hence E × B drift data in low/equatorial latitude regions. To this effect, there exists no ground-based instrument for direct measurements of E×B drift data in the African sector. This study presents the first time investigation aimed at modelling the long-term variability of low latitude vertical E × B drift over the African sector using a combination of Communication and Navigation Outage Forecasting Systems (C/NOFS) and ground-based magnetometer observations/measurements during 2008-2013. Because the approach is based on the estimation of equatorial electrojet from ground-based magnetometer observations, the developed models are only valid for local daytime. Three modelling techniques have been considered. The application of Empirical Orthogonal Functions and partial least squares has been performed on vertical E × B drift modelling for the first time. The artificial neural networks that have the advantage of learning underlying changes between a set of inputs and known output were also used in vertical E × B drift modelling. Due to lack of E×B drift data over the African sector, the developed models were validated using satellite data and the climatological Scherliess-Fejer model incorporated within the International Reference Ionosphere model. Maximum correlation coefficient of ∼ 0.8 was achieved when validating the developed models with C/NOFS E × B drift observations that were not used in any model development. For most of the time, the climatological model overestimates the local daytime vertical E × B drift velocities. The methods and approach presented in this study provide a background for constructing vertical E ×B drift databases in longitude sectors that do not have radar instrumentation. This will in turn make it possible to study day-to-day variability of vertical E×B drift and hopefully lead to the development of regional and global models that will incorporate local time information in different longitude sectors.

The potential exists for these organisations to launch products that are substandard and which either do not take into account customer needs or do not comply with current legislations or regulations. Most telecommunication organisations have a well-defined enterprise risk management program, to ensure compliance to King III, however risk management processes specifically for new products and services might be lacking. The responsibility usually resides with the product managers for the implementation of robust products; however they do not always have the correct skillset to ensure adherence to governance requirements and therefore might not be aware of which laws they might not be adhering to, or understand the customers’ requirements. More complex products, additional competition, changes to technology and new business ventures have reinforced the need to manage risk on telecommunication products. Failure to take risk requirements into account could lead to potential fines, damage the organisation’s reputation which could lead to customers churning from these service providers. This research analyses three periods of data captured from a mobile telecommunication organisation to assess the current status quo of risk management maturity within the organisation’s product and service environment. Based on the analysis as well as industry best practices, a risk management framework for products is proposed that can assist product managers analyse concepts to ensure adherence to governance requirements. This could assist new product or service offerings in the marketplace do not create a perception of distrust by consumers.

Early stage ichthyofauna from shallow water habitats of the Angola-Benguela frontal zone

- Description: Early stage fishes (larvae and early juveniles) were collected from an array of shallow water (±1.5m) habitats on the warm-temperate southern Angolan coastline between June 2014 and June 2015. This study, the first assessment of the early stages of coastal fishes in Angola, provides important new understanding of non-estuarine shallow water nursery habitat use by coastal fishes from the region. In total, 51 species from 18 teleost families were observed. The exposed surf zone was dominated by postflexion larvae, while the moderately exposed beach and sheltered bay were dominated by early juveniles. Both fish density and diversity peaked in the wet season (Feb – Apr 2015) for all habitats, attributed to the influx of summer spawning species. Diplodus sargus dominated catches from the exposed surf zone, and the timing of observations supports the growing consensus that sparid spawning is dictated by temperature, not season. The similitude of the observed species to those observed in warm temperate South Africa highlights the historical connection of the warm-temperate study area with warm-temperate South Africa, prior to the formation of the Benguela Current as a vicariant barrier. The classification of the study assemblage into established estuarine utilization categories showed that the surf zone hosted more exclusively marine species than comparable surf zones in South Africa, attributed to the absence of estuaries in southern Angola. However, the observation of the marine estuarine dependent Mugil cephalus in this study area devoid of estuaries suggests that estuarine dependency may be regionally specific for some taxa. It appears that the warm, sheltered, nutrient rich waters of Tombua Bay provide typically estuarine associated taxa with a suitable alternative, non-estuarine nursery habitat. This study provides evidence that the importance of estuaries as critical nursery habitats has been overemphasized for some warm-temperate coastal fishes. However, the absence of other marine estuarine dependent species from the study area suggests that some warm-temperate taxa do intrinsically rely on estuarine function for survival.

Oxygen limitation and thermal tolerance: a comparison of pulmonate and patellogastropod limpets

- Description: Since the scientific community anticipates a general change in the global climate, it has become increasingly important to develop predictive models which encompass mechanisms to generate reliable forecasts of the effects this change on ecological communities and processes. To this end, the oxygen- and capacity- limited thermal tolerance (OCLTT) theory has been developed as a link between various physiological processes, the thermal aspect of climate change and the associated shifts at different levels of biological organization. This study set out to assess the general applicability of the OCLTT theory in eurythermal pulmonate and patellogastropod limpets, whose distributions overlap on the high shore rocks of the warm temperate, south-east coast of South Africa.This was done by determining their microhabitat use, median lethal temperatures and cardiac, Arrhenius breakpoint temperatures as measures of their upper thermal tolerance limits, in both air and water. The main hypotheses of the study were that the pulmonate limpets would be more common than the patellogastropods in warmer microhabitats during low tide and would have higher thermal limits than the patellogastropods in air and vice versa in water. This was based on the assumption that the two limpet groups have different capabilities of oxygen consumption in air and water, due to differences in their respiratory organs and that this would be reflected in their thermal tolerances based on predictions made by the OCLTT. This assumption was important because oxygen consumption was not measured in this study. Previous research (e.g. Garrity, 1984), showed that a thermal stress gradient exists among rocky intertidal microhabitats. From most to least thermally stressful the gradient is horizontal surfaces> slopes> vertical surfaces> tide pools> crevices. The current study found that, while the pulmonate limpets, Siphonaria capensis and S. serrata, preferred rock pools, sloped, vertical and horizontal rock surfaces, the patellogastropod limpets, Cellana capensis and Scutellastra granularis, preferred rock pools and vertical rock surfaces. Furthermore, the pulmonate limpets were only common on horizontal rock surfaces where specific ameliorating conditions would have mitigated thermal stress there. In addition, C. capensis had similar thermal tolerance limits to the pulmonate limpets in air and the pulmonate limpets had similar and/or higher thermal tolerance limits compared to S. granularis in water. This indicates that the pulmonate limpets did not necessarily prefer warmer microhabitats than the patellogastropod limpets and that there were no differences in the collective upper thermal tolerance limits between the two limpet groups in either medium.Consequently, there was no indication from this study that an assumed superior capacity for oxygen supply translates into greater thermal tolerance and that the hypotheses based on the OCLTT were not supported. Although this was an indirect test of the OCLTT theory, I conclude that this study does not support the notion of its general applicability and that mechanisms other than those outlined by the OCLTT theory may help explain the patterns of thermal limitation observed in the current study.

- Description: Since the scientific community anticipates a general change in the global climate, it has become increasingly important to develop predictive models which encompass mechanisms to generate reliable forecasts of the effects this change on ecological communities and processes. To this end, the oxygen- and capacity- limited thermal tolerance (OCLTT) theory has been developed as a link between various physiological processes, the thermal aspect of climate change and the associated shifts at different levels of biological organization. This study set out to assess the general applicability of the OCLTT theory in eurythermal pulmonate and patellogastropod limpets, whose distributions overlap on the high shore rocks of the warm temperate, south-east coast of South Africa.This was done by determining their microhabitat use, median lethal temperatures and cardiac, Arrhenius breakpoint temperatures as measures of their upper thermal tolerance limits, in both air and water. The main hypotheses of the study were that the pulmonate limpets would be more common than the patellogastropods in warmer microhabitats during low tide and would have higher thermal limits than the patellogastropods in air and vice versa in water. This was based on the assumption that the two limpet groups have different capabilities of oxygen consumption in air and water, due to differences in their respiratory organs and that this would be reflected in their thermal tolerances based on predictions made by the OCLTT. This assumption was important because oxygen consumption was not measured in this study. Previous research (e.g. Garrity, 1984), showed that a thermal stress gradient exists among rocky intertidal microhabitats. From most to least thermally stressful the gradient is horizontal surfaces> slopes> vertical surfaces> tide pools> crevices. The current study found that, while the pulmonate limpets, Siphonaria capensis and S. serrata, preferred rock pools, sloped, vertical and horizontal rock surfaces, the patellogastropod limpets, Cellana capensis and Scutellastra granularis, preferred rock pools and vertical rock surfaces. Furthermore, the pulmonate limpets were only common on horizontal rock surfaces where specific ameliorating conditions would have mitigated thermal stress there. In addition, C. capensis had similar thermal tolerance limits to the pulmonate limpets in air and the pulmonate limpets had similar and/or higher thermal tolerance limits compared to S. granularis in water. This indicates that the pulmonate limpets did not necessarily prefer warmer microhabitats than the patellogastropod limpets and that there were no differences in the collective upper thermal tolerance limits between the two limpet groups in either medium.Consequently, there was no indication from this study that an assumed superior capacity for oxygen supply translates into greater thermal tolerance and that the hypotheses based on the OCLTT were not supported. Although this was an indirect test of the OCLTT theory, I conclude that this study does not support the notion of its general applicability and that mechanisms other than those outlined by the OCLTT theory may help explain the patterns of thermal limitation observed in the current study.

Although writing from very different subject positions within the social order of the time, Plomer and Plaatje embody in their novels a strikingly similar vision of a South Africa free of racial barriers. Plaatje's version of South African history in Mhudi deconstructs colonial binarism by dramatizing not only conflict and difference but also co-operation and commonality. Holding the past up as a mirror to the present, it protests against racial injustice while implying the continuing possibility of reconciliation. Plomer reacts angrily to white hypocrisy and insists on the rights and humanity of his African characters, in the name of imperatives both moral and political. He seeks additional sanction for these by situating the South African race questioning the context of a Western world slowly awakening to the consequences of modernity. During a time of political turbulence, both writers speak out boldly and confidently against the rising dominance of segregationist ideology. The imminent inception of full democracy in South Africa has reanimated the relevance of these writers' vision of a non- racial social order. If one of the challenges facing the South African literary historian 'today is the reconstruction of a truly national literary tradition, then Mhudi and Turbott Wolfe would appear to be key works in such an enterprise. As different as Plaatje's epic myth-making is from Plomer's modernist irony, both novels contrive to speak with a new voice: a national voice which expresses the aspirations of all South Africa's people. They are, moreover, novels whose survival seems guaranteed as much by their aesthetic qualities as by their ideological orientation. The novels are examined against the backgrounds of South African society and colonial literary production. They are seen as milestones in the development of a liberal South African literary tradition. By breaking with the dominant oppositional mode, whether that of "white writing" or an emergent "writing black", Plomer and Plaatje exemplify a literature at once socially relevant and possessed of a prophetic vision that remains of significance in South Africa today.

As a result, a number of communities have sprung up in the tribal Authority areas close to this conurbation of some half a million people. These communities are neither urban nor rural, and comprise people with rural farmworker backgrounds who obtain their main source of income from employment in urban areas. In contradistinction to their true rural cousins, the breadwinners in these communities do not need to become migrants living and working far from home. Rather, they work during the week in an urban location close to home, and return on weekends to their families and children. This volume reports on one such community. The settlement of Tsweletswele is new, situated in a Tribal area, and within thirty kilometres of East London. Its residents who came from farms in the region work in East London. Their level of living is low, their access to state services minimal, and their tenure in the settlement uncertain. This report aims quite simply to establish what strategies these people choose to survive in their settlement.
