- Description: Scientists continually require additional processing power, as this enables them to compute larger problem sizes, use more complex models and algorithms, and solve problems previously thought computationally impractical. General-purpose computation on graphics processing units (GPGPU) can help in this regard, as there is great potential in using graphics processors to accelerate many scientific models and algorithms. However, some problems are considerably harder to accelerate than others, and it may be challenging for those new to GPGPU to ascertain the difficulty of accelerating a particular problem or seek appropriate optimisation guidance. Through what was learned in the acceleration of a hydrological uncertainty ensemble model, large numbers of k-difference string comparisons, and a radix sort, problem attributes have been identified that can assist in the evaluation of the difficulty in accelerating a problem using GPUs. The identified attributes are inherent parallelism, branch divergence, problem size, required computational parallelism, memory access pattern regularity, data transfer overhead, and thread cooperation. Using these attributes as difficulty indicators, an initial problem difficulty classification framework has been created that aids in GPU acceleration difficulty evaluation. This framework further facilitates directed guidance on suggested optimisations and required knowledge based on problem classification, which has been demonstrated for the aforementioned accelerated problems. It is anticipated that this framework, or a derivative thereof, will prove to be a useful resource for new or novice GPGPU developers in the evaluation of potential problems for GPU acceleration.

Gold mineralisation at Masumbi Au-Cu Prospect, west Kenya : implication for gold exploration in the Archaean Ndori Greenstone Belt of Kenya

- Description: The Masumbi Au-Cu deposit in the Ndori Greenstone Belt of western Kenya is hosted in dacitic volcanics of the Nyanzian Group (2710 ± 340 Ma) and dioritic to granodioritic felsic intrusives (2504 ± 48 Ma). The deposit is characterised by gold and copper mineralisation that is associated with quartz-sulphide veins and veinlets. The copper mineralisation typically occurs as chalcopyrite. Gold is closely associated with pyrite in mineralogy and its pathfinder elements silver, bismuth, tellurium and selenium in geochemistry. The gold occurs in two forms that may indicate two generations of precipitation: the equant and the elongate forms. Based on Au/Ag ratios, the equant gold grains can be classified as native gold as their gold content is greater than 90 wt%. The elongate gold grains can be classified as electrums as their silver content is greater than 38 wt%. While there is a strong Au-Ag association within individual gold grains supporting an orogenic model for the gold mineralisation, mineralisation at the Masumbi Prospect appears atypical of Archaean orogenic gold deposits because of the abundance of copper (up to 0.43%). The enrichment of silver, copper, bismuth and tellurium in ore assemblages is common in porphyry, VMS and epithermal systems, but their presence at Masumbi does not preclude the formation as an orogenic deposit. Assay results from three Masumbi diamond drill-holes show an apparent correlation between gold and copper. However, petrography and electron probe microanalyses results from this study indicate that chalcopyrite is an earlier phase than pyrite as it occasionally occurs as inclusions in pyrite. This petrogenetic relationship between pyrite and chalcopyrite suggests that there is no temporal relationship between gold and copper mineralisation. Statistical analysis of the assays shows no linear correlation between gold and copper thereby supporting the above findings. The gold and copper mineralisation have been interpreted as forming as two separate events with copper forming first followed by gold. These events are both related to the intrusion of the felsic rocks that are associated with the Aruan metamorphic event that has been responsible for the bulk of the gold mineralisation on the Tanzanian Craton. The common alteration assemblage in the Masumbi rocks comprises chlorite and epidote. This alteration assemblage is typical of regional greenschist metamorphic facies grading into amphibolite metamorphic facies in the Nyanzian Group of Kenya. However, these alteration minerals could possibly be products of propylitic alteration in the rock groundmass. Other alteration mineral assemblages, possibly of hydrothermal origin, comprise muscovite, sericite, quartz, carbonate, associated with the sulphides pyrite and chalcopyrite. Although the occurrence of gold appears to be controlled by the presence of pyrite, it is also associated with silicification. Exploration methods have been proposed to target undiscovered gold deposits in the Ndori Greenstone Belt that are similar to the Masumbi deposit. These methods could probably be applied to vein-type gold deposits in other granite-greenstone terranes in the Lake Victoria Goldfields.

- Description: This study involves using methyllithium to synthesize Fischer carbene complexes as precursors for metal templated α,β-unsaturated complexes with potential as acceptors in the Baylis Hillman reaction as well as in Dötz benzannulation. Fischer carbene complexes contain low oxidation state metal centers, are electrophilic in nature and are stabilized by π-donating substituents such as alkoxy and amino groups. The increased electron withdrawing nature of the metal carbonyl moiety was expected to improve the rates of reaction compared to organic carbonyls. Four Fischer carbenes were synthesized via nucleophilic addition of MeLi to chromium and tungsten hexacarbonyl at low temperatures followed by alkylation using either a Meerwein salt (Me₃OBF₄) to give the desired Fischer metal methyl methoxy carbenes or Et₄NBr/alkylhalide to make the corresponding ethoxy and allyloxy carbenes. Characterization was by means of ¹³C NMR, ¹H NMR, and IR. In silico studies were carried out looking at the effect of substituents on the carbene bond. Synthesis of α,β-unsaturated complexes was effected via the aldol condensation route and found to be unfavorable using enolizable aldehydes, although the use of two aryl aldehydes resulted in successful preparation of two α,β-unsaturated complexes. Difficulty in the purification of these complexes hindered their full characterization. Computational studies looked at the effect of substituents on the system as well as variation of the metal from Cr to Mo and W. Synthesis of Baylis Hillman adducts using α,β-unsaturated complexes as acceptors was unsuccessful due to the ease of product oxidization. One potential product was obtained in its crude form although purification was not possible due to oxidation. Computational studies suggested that the oxygen on the ligand negatively impacts the stability of these Fischer carbene derived Baylis Hillman adducts promoting intramolecular oxidation of the metal. The α,β-unsaturated complexes and Baylis Hillman adducts were considered to be candidates to undergo Dötz benzannulation methodology. The use of the α,β-unsaturated complexes in this reaction was generally unsuccessful, both in the microwave and in conventional reflux conditions. Computational studies of these compounds were carried out to facilitate understanding of their stability and configuration.

- Description: The eastern branch of the late Proterozoic Damara Orogenic Belt of central Namibia hosts various copper, gold, manganese and uranium deposits, but in the vicinity of Steinhausen, approximately 145 km northeast of Windhoek, the Damara Belt becomes increasingly covered by recent Kalahari cover sediments resulting in little known geology and subsequent lack of discovered economic mineral deposits. Airborne magnetic and radiometric data over the Steinhausen Study Area was enhanced through image processing and filtering to accentuate characteristics of subsurface geology that, by comparing these characteristics to known geology, aided in the interpretive mapping of lithology, structure and targets for follow-up exploration. As a result, some important observations regarding the regional lithology can be drawn. An arenaceous stratigraphic unit that includes a coarse grained, glassy quartzite below the Kuiseb Formation equates to either the eastern Damaran equivalent of the Nosib Group subjected to high grade metamorphism or, alternatively, the upper part of the pre-Damaran sequence, immediately underlying the Damara. The Kuiseb Formation within the study area is uncharacteristically varied as compared to the same formation further west along the Damaran Orogen and can be subdivided into 5 separate units based on geophysical signature. Structural features evident within the study area include the prominent Kudu and Okahandja Lineaments and straddle an area of inferred uplifted stratigraphy of possibly pre-Damara age. The Ekuja Dome (Kibaran age and host to the Omitiomire copper deposit) is also clearly discernible on the airborne magnetic data and is cross-cut by an east-northeast structural zone. Direct targets for follow-up exploration include the Rodenbeck intrusion, anomalous magnetic bodies and numerous radiometric anomalies present within the study area. Identified dome-like features are considered prospective for Omitiomire-style deposits and the Okatjuru Layered Complex is considered a possible source of copper, chromite, magnetite, ilmenite, nickel and the platinum group elements.

Phylogeography and epifauna of two intertidal seaweeds on the coast of South Africa

- Description: Southern African biogeographic boundaries delimit the phylogeographic distribution of some coastal and estuarine invertebrates. This study investigated the impact of these boundaries on the phylogeographic distribution of two intertidal red seaweeds, Gelidium pristoides and Hypnea spicifera using the mitochondrial Cox2-3 spacer and the nuclear ITS1 regions. G. pristoides spores have short distance-dispersal, while long distance-dispersal is more likely in H. spicifera via spores and drifting fertile thallus fragments. Both markers revealed a south-western and south-eastern lineage within G. pristoides but the breaks between lineages do not coincide with any recognised biogeographic limits. The Cox2-3 spacer revealed a boundary between the two lineages at the Alexandria Coastal Dunefield (ACD) and ITS1 at the Gamtoos-Van Stadens Dunefields (GVD) which is approximately 80km west of the ACD. The minor difference between the two markers regarding location of the phylogeographic boundary is probably due to the dating differences between the two dunefields. The ACD as developed currently is superimposed on the ancient dunefields which formed during the Pleistocene, coinciding with the Cox2-3 spacer sequences divergence which dates back 500,000 - 580,000 years. The GVD formed during the Holocene (6,500 - 4,000 years ago), coinciding with the ITS1 sequences divergence which dates 4,224 - 4,928 years ago. Thus, these phylogeographic boundaries probably appeared without the influence of biogeographic boundaries, but rather due to the lack of suitable habitat in the dunefields, coupled with short dispersal-distances of the spores. Analysis of the ITS1 and Cox2-3 spacer regions in H. spicifera revealed that the species is characterized by uniform genetic structure along the coastline. This reflects the species`s potential for long range expansion as it inhabits both the intertidal and subtidal zones; and this presumably leads to high gene flow among populations. The ITS1 sequences showed minimal genetic variation of one substitution between the gametophyte and tetrasporophyte generations within H. spicifera. This suggests the predominance of asexual reproduction, which reduces gene flow and fixes alleles between generations. ANOSIM and Bray-Curtis cluster analyses showed scale-dependant variation in the abundances of epifauna (mainly amphipod, isopod, mollusc and polychaete species) on G. pristoides. At small local (within site) and large (among sites) scales, there were weak and no structure in epifaunal abundances respectively. However, at larger, biogeographic scales, samples from the same biogeographic region tended to be clustered together. Thus, there was a group containing predominantly south coast samples and a group containing east coast samples mixed with the remaining south coast samples. Such scale-dependant variation in epifaunal abundances is probably due to the effects of factors driving species richness at small local (within site) scales (e.g. wave exposure, seaweed biomass) and at larger, biogeographic scales (e.g. surface sea temperature). Moreover, at very small (individual samples) scales; there was no correlation between epifauna composition and genotype of the seaweed. Seaweed samples characterized by distinct ITS1 or Cox2-3 spacer sequences did not show any significant differences in epifaunal composition. Although the distributional pattern of the epifaunal community observed at large biogeographic scale is not clear, it seems to be associated with the biogeographic regions. However, phylogeographic distribution of Gelidium pristoides is not connected to biogeographic regions. Thus, at larger, biogeographic scales, there is no correlation between phylogeographic distribution of G. pristoides and distribution of the associated fauna

Analysis of the ITS1 and Cox2-3 spacer regions in H. spicifera revealed that the species is characterized by uniform genetic structure along the coastline. This reflects the species`s potential for long range expansion as it inhabits both the intertidal and subtidal zones; and this presumably leads to high gene flow among populations. The ITS1 sequences showed minimal genetic variation of one substitution between the gametophyte and tetrasporophyte generations within H. spicifera. This suggests the predominance of asexual reproduction, which reduces gene flow and fixes alleles between generations. ANOSIM and Bray-Curtis cluster analyses showed scale-dependant variation in the abundances of epifauna (mainly amphipod, isopod, mollusc and polychaete species) on G. pristoides. At small local (within site) and large (among sites) scales, there were weak and no structure in epifaunal abundances respectively. However, at larger, biogeographic scales, samples from the same biogeographic region tended to be clustered together. Thus, there was a group containing predominantly south coast samples and a group containing east coast samples mixed with the remaining south coast samples. Such scale-dependant variation in epifaunal abundances is probably due to the effects of factors driving species richness at small local (within site) scales (e.g. wave exposure, seaweed biomass) and at larger, biogeographic scales (e.g. surface sea temperature). Moreover, at very small (individual samples) scales; there was no correlation between epifauna composition and genotype of the seaweed. Seaweed samples characterized by distinct ITS1 or Cox2-3 spacer sequences did not show any significant differences in epifaunal composition. Although the distributional pattern of the epifaunal community observed at large biogeographic scale is not clear, it seems to be associated with the biogeographic regions. However, phylogeographic distribution of Gelidium pristoides is not connected to biogeographic regions. Thus, at larger, biogeographic scales, there is no correlation between phylogeographic distribution of G. pristoides and distribution of the associated fauna

Infralittoral size frequency distributions for both species revealed significant variation in density and size among sites of varying exploitation pressure. Densities ranged between 0 – 2.23 m⁻² (H. midae) and 0.03 – 4.93 m⁻² (T. sarmaticus) and maximum shell lengths ranged from 49.4 – 153.5 mm (H. midae) and 28.3 – 104.4 mm (T. sarmaticus). Relatively high densities and large sizes were found in marine reserves and secluded areas, and low densities and small sizes at sites near to large population centres and within the former Ciskei homeland region. Mean size of the largest 10% of the population, total density and sexually mature density were significantly related to exploitation predictors for both species. In addition, densities of H. midae juveniles were significantly related to exploitation predictors, suggesting that recruitment may be suppressed at the most exploited sites. Exploitation of T. sarmaticus tended to be localized with refuge and subtidal populations persisting. H. midae exploitation was however, far more extensive and intense. Growth of H. midae was investigated using three methods; mark-recapture, cohort analysis and growth banding analysis at Kowie Rocks, Port Alfred. The most useful of these methods for determining growth was a new technique described for growth banding analysis; which was validated using cohort analysis and measurements of shells of known age. This technique was less time consuming and labour intensive than previously described methods. Abalone growth was best described by the Schnute (1981) growth function. Systematic geographic variation in growth was observed for 10 sites along the South African coastline. Significant differences in growth among sites existed for animals between 0-4 years (P < 0.0001) and 4-6 years (P < 0.0001), and in the mean maximum sizes attained (P < 0.001). In general, abalone from the south east/east coast were found to have faster growth rates, smaller mean maximum sizes and attained sexual maturity earlier than those along the south west/ west coast. Haliotis midae recruit and juvenile densities were found to differ significantly among sites of varying exploitation pressure (P < 0.0001) and among months for recruit densities (P < 0.001). Exploited sites had low recruit and juvenile densities compared to unexploited sites and peak recruitment occurred during October/ November 2005. Recruit densities were significantly related to infralittoral adult densities during two of the three sampling months (P<0.05), when recruitment was low. No relationship was observed during the period of high recruitment, with all sites receiving high recruit densities. It was concluded that variation in recruit densities was the result of a combination of both density-dependent relationships (i.e. local spawner density and temporal variability in recruitment intensity) and the possible dispersal capabilities of H. midae. In addition, it was concluded that at present recruitment overfishing was not occurring along the south east coast. Post-recruitment mortality rates were variable but relatively constant, with hypothetical percentage survival and density curves revealing high rates and similar mortality curves among sites. Variation in juvenile densities was consequently a result of initial recruit densities and not variation in post-recruitment mortality. T. sarmaticus populations were found to be regionally sustainable and persisted along the south east coast due to adjacent intertidal and subtidal refuge populations. However, H. midae populations are becoming decimated along the south east coast. From the information obtained in this study new management proposals were suggested and discussed, such as closed areas and region-based management fisheries together with stock enhancement. These suggestions may prove to be feasible alternatives to present management strategies.

Of all the limitations that these networks had, the ability of malicious attacks to cripple communication was not a crucial one. This situation has changed radically now that real-time communication and data have merged to share the same network. The objective of this project is to investigate the securing of softswitches with functionality similar to Private Branch Exchanges (PBX) from malicious attacks. The focus of the project will be a practical investigation of how to secure ILANGA, an ASTERISK-based system under development at Rhodes University. The practical investigation that focuses on ILANGA is based on performing six varied experiments on the different components of ILANGA. Before the six experiments are performed, basic preliminary security measures and the restrictions placed on the access to the database are discussed. The outcomes of these experiments are discussed and the precise reasons why these attacks were either successful or unsuccessful are given. Suggestions of a theoretical nature on how to defend against the successful attacks are also presented.

- Description: Since the discovery of a new species of sabellid worm in 1993, the Californian and South African abalone industries have experienced increasing shell breakage and reduced growth rates of abalone, resulting in reduced market value of product. This polychaete worm can reach very high infestation levels. It was described as Terebrasabella heterouncinata in 1999, having originated from the South African coastline where it had been observed on several wild mollusc species. Although not a shell borer, it occupies tubes on the growing edge which are formed by deposition of nacreous shell over sabellid larvae by the host abalone. Heavy sabellid infestation levels have placed the economic viability of several South African farms under threat. Past research methods have not been successful in establishing effective means of eradication or control, partly due to the lack of knowledge of basic biological information on this species. This study forms the first part of an ongoing research project into the biology of terebrasabella heterouncinata. Abalone farms in South African utilise two main diets in abalone culture. An artificial formulated feed, Abfeed, is produced in South Africa and is used by the majority of farms as it increases abalone growth rate. Kelp, a natural diet of abalone, is harvested and also used as a feed. Farmers have observed higher sabellid infestation levels on Abfeed-fed abalone and suspect that diet may be an important factor influencing sabellid infestation. Abalone stocking density has also been identified as a potential factor influencing sabellid population growth on commercial farms. In order to better understand sabellid nutrition, the feeding behaviour of the sabellid in response to suspended solids of various particle size classes from both abalone diets were investigated. Both the effect of abalone diet and stocking density and their effects on sabellid morphometrics were quantified. The proximate composition and particle size distribution of suspended-solids present within kelp and Abfeed abalone raceways were also quantified. Results indicate that sabellid feeding follows no structured behavioural pattern for both abalone diets. The quantity of suspended solids in kelp raceways was greater than in Abfeed raceways (p<0.02) while there was no difference in particulate level between three abalone stocking densities (p>0.05). Protein (p<0.0001) and energy (p<0.0.1) levels of suspended solids were significantly greater in raceways dedicated to feeding Abfeed. The infestation level (number of tubes/centimetre on the grwoing edge) was significantly higher (p<0.001) in Abfeed-fed abalone. The morphometrics of the sabellids indicated that sabellids from Abfeed-fed abalone were larger in various body measurements: length (p<0.00001); neck width (p<0.001); base width (p<0.001); and surface area (p<0.001). - Description: Gold-bearing volcanic breccia complexes are the major sources of gold in the Tasman Fold Belt System in north Queensland. The Tasman Fold Belt System represents the site of continental accretion as a series of island-arcs and intra-arc basins with accompanying thick sedimentation, volcanism, plutonism, tectonism and mineralisation. In north Queensland, the fold belt system comprises the Hodgkinson-Broken River Fold Belt, Thomson Fold Belt, New England Fold Belt and the Georgetown Inlier. The most numerous ore deposits are associated with calc-alkaline volcanics and granitoid intrusivesof the transitional tectonic stage of the fold belt system. The formation and subsequent gold mineralisation of volcanic breccia complexes are related to Permo-Carboniferous magmatism within the Thomson Fold Belt and Georgetown Inlier. The two most important producing areas are at Mount Leyshon and Kidston mines, which are high tonnage, low-grade gold deposits. The Mount Leyshon breccia complex was emplaced along the contact between CambroOrdovician metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks, and Ordovician-Devonian I-type granitoids of the Lolworth-Ravenswood Block. The Kidston breccia complex is located on a major lithological contact between the Early to Middle Proterozoic . Einasleigh Metamorphics and the Silurian-Devonian Oak River Granodiorite. The principal hosts to the gold mineralisation at the Mount Leyshon and Kidston deposits, are breccia pipes associated with several episodes of porphyry intrusives. The goldbearing magmatic-hydrothermal and phreatomagmatic breccias post-date the development of a porphyry-type protore. The magmatic-hydrothermal breccias were initially emplaced without the involvement of meteoric-hydrothermal fluids, within a closed system. Later magma impulses reached higher levels in the cooled upper magma chamber, where meteoric water invaded the fracture system. This produced an explosive emplacement of phreatomagmatic breccias, as seen at Mount Leyshon. Widespread sericitisation and pyrite mineralisation are common, with cavity fill, disseminated and fracturelveincontrolled gold and base metal sulphides. The Kidston and Mount Leyshon breccia complexes have hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation characteristics of the 'Lowell-Guilbert Model'. However, the argillic zone is generally not well defined. The gold travelled as chloride complexes with the hydrothermal fluids before being deposited into cavities and fractures of the breccias. Later stage epithermal deposits formed at the top of the breccia complexes that were dominantly quartz-adularia-sericite-type. The erosion, collapse and further intrusion of later porphyry phases allowed the upper parts of the breccia complexes to mix with the lower hydrothermal systems. Exploration for gold-related volcanic breccia complexes is directed at identifying hydrothermal alteration. This is followed by detailed ground studies including geological, mineralogical, petrological and geochemical work, with the idea of constructing a 'model' that can be tested with subsequent subsurface work (e.g. drilling). Geomorphology, remote sensing, geochemistry, geophysics, petrology, isotopes and fluid inclusions are recommended exploration techniques for the search of gold-bearing volcanic breccia complexes. Spectral remote sensing has especially become an important tool for the detection of hydrothermal alteration. Clay and iron minerals of the altered rock, within the breccia complexes, have distinctive spectral characteristics that can be recognisable in multispectral images from the Landsat thematic mapper. The best combination of bands, when using TM remote sensing for hydrothermally altered rock, are 3/5/7 or 4/5/7. The breccia complexes have exploration signatures represented as topographic highs, emplaced within major structural weaknesses, associated I-type granitic batholiths, early potassic alteration with overprint of sericitic alteration, and an associated radiometric high and magnetic low. The exploration for gold-bearing volcanic breccia complex deposits cannot be disregarded, because of the numerous occurrences that are now the major gold producers in north Queensland.

Widespread sericitisation and pyrite mineralisation are common, with cavity fill, disseminated and fracturelveincontrolled gold and base metal sulphides. The Kidston and Mount Leyshon breccia complexes have hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation characteristics of the 'Lowell-Guilbert Model'. However, the argillic zone is generally not well defined. The gold travelled as chloride complexes with the hydrothermal fluids before being deposited into cavities and fractures of the breccias. Later stage epithermal deposits formed at the top of the breccia complexes that were dominantly quartz-adularia-sericite-type. The erosion, collapse and further intrusion of later porphyry phases allowed the upper parts of the breccia complexes to mix with the lower hydrothermal systems. Exploration for gold-related volcanic breccia complexes is directed at identifying hydrothermal alteration. This is followed by detailed ground studies including geological, mineralogical, petrological and geochemical work, with the idea of constructing a 'model' that can be tested with subsequent subsurface work (e.g. drilling). Geomorphology, remote sensing, geochemistry, geophysics, petrology, isotopes and fluid inclusions are recommended exploration techniques for the search of gold-bearing volcanic breccia complexes. Spectral remote sensing has especially become an important tool for the detection of hydrothermal alteration. Clay and iron minerals of the altered rock, within the breccia complexes, have distinctive spectral characteristics that can be recognisable in multispectral images from the Landsat thematic mapper. The best combination of bands, when using TM remote sensing for hydrothermally altered rock, are 3/5/7 or 4/5/7. The breccia complexes have exploration signatures represented as topographic highs, emplaced within major structural weaknesses, associated I-type granitic batholiths, early potassic alteration with overprint of sericitic alteration, and an associated radiometric high and magnetic low. The exploration for gold-bearing volcanic breccia complex deposits cannot be disregarded, because of the numerous occurrences that are now the major gold producers in north Queensland.

- Description: Cytochrome P-450, the terminal oxidase of the metabolic mono-oxygenase system, is thought to exist in multiple forms, which have differing substrate specificities, and are variably inducible by different enzyme inducers. Many mutagens, themselves unreactive, require metabolic activation by one or more of these cytochrome P-450-dependent microsomal enzymes for mutagenic activity. Such mutagens may be detected in the Salmonella mutagenicity test only by the incorporation of an hepatic microsomal (59) fraction into the assay (as a first approximation to in vivo metabolism). Induction of the microsomal enzymes by different agents enhances the metabolic activation of mutagens; in fact, many mutagens are only detected when the 59 fraction has been induced by appropriate agents. Inducers of the phenobarbital-type are known to enhance microsomal steroid hydroxylation when administered at supraphysiological levels, inducers of several mono-oxygenase activities. In turn, the steroids, have been reported to be The inductive effects of the female sex-steroids and the combined effects of steroid and phenobarbital (PB) pretreatment on the metabolic activation of four mutagens have been investigated using the Salmonella assay. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were pret reated with 17a-oestradiol (E2) or progesterone (PRG) , at a level of either 1 mg/kg or 20 mg / kg daily for 14 days. A duplicate set of similarly pretreated groups were also induced with PB. Hepatic microsomal fractions were prepared from each group and incubated with each of the te st mutagens in the presence of a tester strain known to detect each particular type of mutagen. Induction of the hepatic metabolizing system by PB increased the activation of the mutagens significantly (as reflected by an increased number of revertant prototrophic S .typhimurium colonies). The administration of PRG also caused significant, and dose-dependent, induction of the activation of af l atoxin B1, benzo(a)pyrene, and dimethylnitrosamine. In general, E2 exhibited no inductive effect, but it did produce an increase in the activation of aflatoxin B1 (a reaction which is known to be catalysed by a mono-oxygenase prefe rentially inducible by PB). When use was made of a microsomal fraction that was prepared from animals which were both steroidpretreated and induced by PB, mutagenic activation was of the same order of magnitude as that observed when induction was brought about by PB alone. The absence of additive effect, taken together with the observations already mentioned, indicate that steroids induce the same cytochrome isozymes that are induced by PB.
