- Description: The lack of interest and hence the decline in the number of learners doing Science in schools, is attributed in part to the decontextualised ways in which Science is taught. As an attempt to address this challenge, the new South African National Curriculum Policy Statement (CAPS) encourages Science teachers to use culturally responsive pedagogies through integrating local or indigenous knowledge (IK) in Science lessons to make it accessible and relevant to learners. But, it does not explicitly state how Science teachers should go about enacting this. It is against this caveat that this study aimed at finding out indigenous practices and knowledge in the community and from two community members that could be integrated into the topic on waves and sound in Grade 10 Physical Sciences lessons with the view to establishing its influence (or not) on learners’ conceptions and dispositions towards Science. The study was conducted at Buyelembo Combined School (pseudonym), a township school in the Sarah Baartman District, in the Eastern Cape in South Africa. The research participants were 18 Grade 10 Physical Sciences learners, two Physical Sciences teachers and two community members. Data were generated using the learners’ group activity, discussions and presentations, observations (participatory observations and lesson observations), stimulated recall interviews and reflections. A thematic and inductive-deductive approach to data analysis was employed to come up with sub-themes and themes. Underpinned by an interpretivist perspective and informed by Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory, a qualitative case study approach was adopted. Additionally, Ogunniyi’s Contiguity Argumentative Theory (CAT) was used as an analytical framework. The five cognitive states of CAT were employed to analyse data during the social interactions to surface any contradictions. The findings from this study revealed that there are indigenous practices and knowledge in relation to the sea that can be integrated into the topic on waves and sound in Grade 10 Physical Sciences lessons. However, regarding relevance of those indigenous practices and knowledge to science, the study revealed that the learners found no relevance at all but discussions and argumentation were enhanced. In addition, findings from this study revealed that the learners’ conceptions, dispositions, and sense-making in science were influenced positively through using hands-on practical activities when teaching Science concepts. Lastly, the study revealed that the use of mother tongue by the community members, learners and the teachers together with the language of learning and teaching promoted learner talk. Based on the findings of this study, I recommend that there is a need to support teachers on how to integrate indigenous practices and knowledge in their teaching, particularly when teaching Physical Sciences.

- Description: Water is essential for food production, however South Africa’s water is already under pressure due to increasing population, food demand, and climate change, amongst other factors. Over the past years, there has been increasing demand for agricultural water use for food production due to these factors. Rainwater harvesting and conservation (RWH&C) for food production is one of the most promising approaches to address increasing demand of water. The Rhodes University Environmental Learning Research Centre have led a project with the Water Research Commission (Project No. K5/2277) focusing on the dissemination of RWH&C practice knowledge that involves some of the extension services in the Nkonkobe Municipality in the Eastern Cape, called the ‘Amanzi [Water] for Food’ project. While extension services were included in the project, the wider role of extension services in ‘disseminating’ RWH&C knowledge amongst farmers is not clear, a problem which provides the focus for this research, especially since there are changes in the designated role of extension services to become more responsive and reflexive in relation to farmers emerging needs, and in response to wider issues such as climate change and water scarcity. In general, there is agreement that the role of extension is to be active within the farming community, to facilitate social interactions and collaborative processes that often focus on activities that are intended to find, assess, interpret and adapt information, knowledge and evidence that are suitable for farmer’s needs. Extension should also be available to identify arising issues that the farmers experience that can be solved by the use of research knowledge. However, little is known with regard to whether extension officers are taking up this role effectively, especially in relation to RWH&C knowledge. Using document analysis, semi-structured interviews, field-based observations and focus group discussions, this research seeks to demonstrate the role of extension services in facilitating and supporting social learning of RWH&C practices amongst rural smallholder farmers for improved food security. It provides insight into the way in which extension officers are able to facilitate social learning using RWH&C knowledge, and the issues that affect the adoption of social learning approaches to extension support related to RWH&C knowledge uptake and dissemination.

- Description: This study is motivated by the vigorous discourse around transformation at Rhodes University and investigates the extent of support for and engagement with students with disabilities in the transformation processes of the institution. It analyses the extent to which integration is holistic at institutions of Higher Learning. Particular interest is given to the institutional culture of Rhodes University, namely whether it values and embraces diversity and is committed to inclusivity, centering the presence and voice of students with disabilities. It explores institutional responses to students with disabilities and their capacity to flourish beyond notions of access, therefore, delivering on the demand for institutional transformation. The thesis draws on the Critical Disability Studies Approach (CDSA), the social justice reform agenda with reference to the feminist analysis of disability, and the concept of inclusive education. The study uses a qualitative research methodology. The sample size used in the study was sufficient to highlight the challenges students with disabilities at Rhodes University face and their coping mechanisms while investigating the extent of support and active participation in the transformation discourse. The study found that the majority of the participants’ academic capabilities were influenced by their disability and impacted on their academic success. The study further revealed that there is a disjuncture between policy and practice in terms of awareness, and as such, effectiveness. While there is a supportive institutional framework, as indicated by more than 50% of the participants in the study, the recommendations ensuing from this research indicate that there are areas in which the university can improve its support mechanisms. Improving support structures is possible through establishing platforms which can be used for students to share their lived experiences and making disability a visible part of the institutional discourse on transformation. The study concludes by arguing for the application of principles of Ubuntu which demonstrate the commitment of Rhodes University in inculcating an inclusive institutional culture and understanding that disability is intersectional with social registers such as race and gender. It emphasises the recognition of the institution as a transforming one if the body that matters is the body whose presence, voice and lived experience is acknowledged and recognised.

- Description: The East Cape Opera Company was founded by Gwyneth Lloyd in 1995 and has performed in various Eastern Cape venues and festivals as well as conducting a tour of the Netherlands. The Company has performed well known operas and operettas such as Mozart's The Magic Flute, Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado as well as their own original isiXhosa operas such as Temba and Seliba, The Moon Prince - Inkosana Yenyanga and The Clay Flute. This thesis is situated within the context of apartheid and post-apartheid, and an emerging post-1994 South African’s operatic culture that embraces multiculturalism. The aim of this research is to explore and raise awareness regarding intercultural communication in relation to isiXhosa operas and examine the linguistic and dramatic characteristics of the construction of these operas. This involves an analysis of the integration of African cultural practices (dramatic and musical) within an essentially western art form. The thesis makes use of intercultural and literary theory as a point of departure to analyse not only the literary qualities of the isiXhosa operas performed by the East Cape Opera Company, but it also seeks to show how these operas reflect an emerging intercultural reality within the South African context. The thesis explores the mixing of genres, including African genres such as the folktale and oral poetry as part of Opera, which has previously been seen as a Western domain. - Description: To redress past discrepancies in land tenure, the ANC government acknowledged that land needs to be made accessible to the previously disadvantaged, announcing that commonage would be a pillar of their land reform programme. Municipal commonage is land granted by the state to municipalities for urban households to use. Presently many urbanites in South Africa seek a livelihood from commonage. However, there has been no livelihood valuation of the contribution commonage makes to previously disadvantaged households. Thus there is a need to calculate the benefits of the commonage programme. Through a two phase approach, this thesis investigated firstly, the proportion of township households which use commonage; and the main characteristics of those households. Secondly, the thesis looks at the extent to which commonage contributes to users' livelihoods and the dominant livelihood strategies pursued by user households. Data was collected for three towns in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa; Bathurst, Fort Beaufort, and Grahamstown. Firstly it was found that between 27-70% of households used commonage, with the largest town having the lowest proportion of users, and vice versa for the smallest town. In terms of household characteristics, each study town was unique. Both Bathurst and Grahamstown user households were poorer than non-using households, however all Fort Beaufort households were considered poor. To assess the benefits of the commonage programme, the marketed and non-marketed consumptive direct-use values of land-based livelihoods on commonage were calculated via the 'own reported values' method. Commonage contributions to total livelihoods ranged between 14-20%. If the contributors from commonage were excluded, over 10% of households in each study town would drop to living below the poverty line. Additionally, commonage was being used productively, with the productivity at each study town being worth over R1 000 per hectare and over R4.7 million per commonage. Finally, a typology of subsistence/survivalist commonage users is presented, with four types being identified. Overall, results suggest that commonage use has increased over the last decade. Moreover, due to food inflation and urbanisation the use of commonage is expected to increase further, highlighting the need for holistic commonage management plans to be created, which should include strategies such as sustainable grazing regimes and natural resource management.

The endocoprid dung beetles of southern Africa (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)

- Description: The biology and ecology of the endocoprid dung beetles of the Aethiopian zoogeographic region has been studied in the field and laboratory. Work has centred mainly on Oniticellus planatus and O. formoaus although infomation has also been supplied on O. egregius, O. pictus and Tragiscus dimidiatus. The taxonomy of Onticellus (s.str.) and Tragiscus has been discussed with the recommendation that O. planattus and O. pseudaplanatus be synonymised. It has been suggested that endocoprid distribution is chiefly controlled by temperature, rainfall and the density of suitable large dung masses. On the basis of distribution it has been suggested that the taxonomic status of the subspecies of O. pictus should be reviewed. Endocoprids (genus Oniticellus (s.str.) are found throughout the warmer regions of Africa and Asia. Tragiscus is found only in Africa. Methods are described for monitoring endocoprids in the field, for distinguishing freshly emerged from older specimens, and for breeding endocoprids under laboratory conditions. It has been shown that endocoprids breed within or just beneath large dung masses unlike most other members of the Scarabaeinae which actively bury dung and construct the their broods at depth in the soil. It has been shown that there is a restriction of breeding sites available to endocoprids due to the removal of dung by the Scarabaeinae beetles and the limited space available within dung pads. This has resulted in low endocoprid population numbers, a disadvantage, which has been countered by highly specialised but opportunistic breeding habits. The requirements of dung plasticity have limited the time available for breeding activity by most endocoprids (excluding O. egresius) so that both the reproductive system and the reproductive behaviour (cf. O. planatus) are geared to rapid egg and brood production. Large numbers of follicles are able to be produced over a short period. In the probable absence of feeding, this has possibly been allowed by the involvement of a well developed fat body. The broods are tended by the parent female during larval development and the follicles are gradually resorbed, probably to prevent starvation. Ovarian recovery is rapid once feeding recommences. Behavioural mechanisms have developed which boost the number of broods constructed and the rapidity with which they are produced. The duration of endocoprid colonisation and the timing of arrival at dung is shown to be related to the rate of pad desiccation which is chiefly controlled by temperature and degree of dung removal by other dung beetles. Precipitation may also play a part. Predation by vertebrates and other insects has been noted and a number of mechanisms are described which are probably protective. Two insect parasitoids of O. formosus larvae have been recorded. The potential use of endocoprids in the Australian dung and fly control project has been discussed and it is recommended that their introduction be considered of low priority. It is suggested that the endocoprids evolved from Euoniticellus type ancestors and that their behaviour complex nidification developed in response to harsh environmental factors, chiefly the danger of desiccation and competition for dung with other dung beetles. From a consideration of brood and brood chamber construction it is suggested that O. egresius is a relatively unspecialised endocoprid which may retain dry season aestivation and has not evolved much further than its probable Euoniticellus type ancestor. The broods are coated in clay and abandoned soon after construction. Greater specialisation is shown by O. planatus and O. formosus which exhibit brooding behaviour, increasing longevity, more specialised brood protection, increased potential fecundity and continuous activity throughout the year. O. formosus shows greater specialisation in brood production than O. planatus. Greatest specialisation is found in T. dimidiatus which exhibits a precise brooding period and low egg production. Brood construction is of a similar degree of specialisation to that of O. formosus. Activity is also continuous throughout the year.
