Determinants of smallholder vegetable farmers' participation on post-harvest practices and market access : evidence from Mashonaland East Province of Zimbabwe

Despite this, smallholder vegetable farmers in Zimbabwe suffer huge post-harvest losses which reduce their profits and market competiveness. Post-harvest losses of vegetables are a major dilemma faced by smallholder farmers. They not only represent waste of scare resources such as farm inputs but they also entail wasted investment in terms of time, human effort and food. Furthermore, there are also a myriad of other challenges which constrain smallholder vegetable farmers in Zimbabwe from accessing lucrative markets. The broad objective of the study was to assess smallholder vegetable farmers` preferred post-harvest practices for value addition as well as factors that condition their selection choices, adoption and product market access. The study was conducted in four districts: Seke, Goromonzi, Murehwa and Mutoko, in the Mashonaland East Province of Zimbabwe. A multistage sampling procedure was adopted in the selection of villages and households. A total of 385 smallholder vegetable farmers were interviewed. The survey was undertaken from August–October 2016. Descriptive statistics were employed to analyse the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of households that were sampled in Mashonaland East Province. Age of household head, gender, educational level, household size, farming experience, main sources of income, land ownership, main vegetables produced and main causes of post-harvest losses were some of the statistics that were analysed. The average age of the farmers varied significantly across districts and it was generally high (average of 50 years). Moreover, the average household size was about six (6) individuals, which is an indication of high dependency ratio. The study also revealed the major causes of post-harvest losses across all vegetables predominantly cultivated in the study area were pests and diseases, followed by decay. Most of the underlying causes of huge post-harvest losses were within the control of the farmer. Therefore, the study recommends strategies from policymakers and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) which enhance post-harvest management. These can result in substantial reduction in losses which can increase farmers’ income without necessarily expanding land under cultivation. The Poisson count regression model (PCRM) was used to analyse factors influencing number of post-harvest techniques adopted by smallholder vegetable farmers in the study area. The results of the PCRM revealed that the following variables were significant in influencing number of post-harvest practices adopted by smallholder vegetable growers: gender, education level, household size, age, farming experience, distance to market, market information, group membership, credit, and hired labour. The study recommends concerted efforts through public private partnerships (PPP) to provide active extension about post-harvest education. This will promote the adoption of simple, uncomplicated and innovative low-cost technologies for post-harvest management. The binary logit model was employed to analyse factors that influence smallholder vegetable farmers’ decisions to select a specific post-harvest practice for value addition. This was based on the three major post-harvest practices which were mainly being adopted by smallholder vegetable farmers’ in the study area which were drying, grading and washing. The results of the binary model showed that nine (9) variables were significant in influencing smallholder vegetable farmers’ decisions to select post-harvest practice for value addition. These were: gender, land size, distance to market, market information, family labour, training, target market, quantity produced and storage facilities. Policymakers and other stakeholders need to provide productive resources such as inputs to improve productivity and ultimately selection of basic post-harvest management techniques along the vegetable supply chain. The multinomial logit model was used in the study to analyse factors that influence market channel choice of smallholder vegetable farmers in the study area. The results from the multinomial logistic regression model revealed that distance to market, group membership, adding value, road infrastructure and quantity produced influenced participation in informal markets. On the other hand, gender, distance to market, market information, group membership, producer price, adding value, road infrastructure, quantity produced and market infrastructure influenced farmers’ participation in formal markets. Policies aimed at assisting resources for improved productivity of vegetables should be gender sensitive. Establishment of irrigation schemes as well as provision of credit for smallholder vegetable production are vital interventions. In the same way, crafting of appropriate policies and programmes which foster collective action amongst smallholder vegetable farmers are required. This will enable them to produce larger volumes as well as participate in more lucrative markets. Finally, smallholder vegetable farmers’ transaction costs can be reduced by investment in infrastructure such as roads.

Psychological capital and emotional intelligence as moderators of the relationship between occupational stress and organisational citizenship behaviour among graduate employees in Nigeria

- Description: The study investigated psychological capital and emotional intelligence as moderators of the relationship between occupational stress and organisational citizenship behaviour among graduate employees in Nigeria, using the explanatory cross-sectional (survey) research design and three sampling techniques (The Two-stage Cluster Sampling Method, The Convenience Sampling Method and The Purposive Sampling Technique) to sample 1532 male and female graduate employees in Nigeria. A structured validated questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents. Six hypotheses were stated and tested in the study towards propounding a model, using Pearson Correlation Analysis, Multiple Regression Analysis and Structural Equation Modelling. The results show that there is a weak positive relationship between occupational stress and organisational citizenship behaviour, r = 0.070, p<0.01; there is a significant positive relationship between psychological capital and organisational citizenship behaviour, r = 0.588, p<0.01; there is a significant positive relationship between emotional intelligence and organisational citizenship behaviour, r = 0.473, p<0.01; psychological capital is a significant moderator of the relationship between occupational stress and organisational citizenship behaviour, F (2,1529) = 8.514; R2= 0.011; p <.05; emotional intelligence is a significant moderator of the relationship between occupational stress and organisational citizenship behaviour, F (2,1529) = 5.945; R2= 0.008; p <.05; psychological capital and emotional intelligence are significant joint moderators of the relationship between occupational stress and organisational citizenship behaviour, F (1,1530) = 221.240; R2= 0.186; p <.05; psychological capital has a direct and significant positive effect on organisational citizenship behaviour, R= 0.657, p<.001; emotional intelligence has a direct and significant positive effect on organisational citizenship behaviour, R= 0.183, p<.001; psychological capital has a direct and significant positive effect on occupational stress, R= 0.100, p<.001; emotional intelligence has a direct and significant positive effect on psychological capital, R= 0.547, p<.001. Based on the results, the study concludes that psychological capital and emotional intelligence are significant joint moderators of the relationship between occupational stress and organisational citizenship behaviour. The proposed model was, therefore, empirically confirmed. The researcher recommends that the empirical model of effective management of occupational stress and organisational citizenship behaviour, which has been propounded in the study, should be adopted and applied by teachers, lecturers, seminar facilitators, workshop trainers, supervisors and managers during their coaching or training sessions.

However, the “How” to do it still has not been explored. This thesis reports on the development of a locally flavoured participatory user requirements elicitation framework for the development of information systems in resource restricted environments. It uses existing participatory design practices, user requirements elicitation literature and local participatory norms and traditions to achieve this. In doing so, it takes a step towards the way information systems could be developed in resource restricted environments. The topic of this thesis is mainly motivated by the recent calls in existing literature for developing countries to start developing their own information systems in order to address their own requirements. Accordingly, and to lay a foundation towards the realisation of this goal, this research is positioned within the user requirements elicitation region of information systems development. Current user requirements elicitation methods use traditional methods where experts/designers ask system users questions through interviews or learn about their environment through observations. This research proposes a shift from this approach to one that not only views users as equal partners in the elicitation process but in the whole information systems development process. This is in the spirit of participatory design, which was developed in Scandinavia more than four decades ago. Further, recent research in participatory design emphasises the importance of its contextual nature and concedes that there is no single best practice for participatory design in information systems that applies to all contexts. This research explores the information systems development discourse in resource restricted environments in Africa. Its purpose is to enhance understanding of the local contexts, thus providing new insights on how to develop a framework that speaks to local challenges using norms and traditions in order to develop information systems that address local requirements. Thus, the main contribution of this research lies in laying a foundation for a locally flavoured participatory approach for information systems development in resource restricted environments. It contributes to the existing information systems development, participatory design and user requirements elicitation body of knowledge by developing a framework for participatory user requirements elicitation. In addition, it contributes to the participatory design body of knowledge by introducing an age-old African participatory decisionmaking approach to the academic participatory design community. The reproductive biology and artificial breeding of ningu Labeo victorianus (Pisces: Cyprinidae)

- Description: Lake Victoria, the largest tropical lake, has faced an unprecedented assault on its ecosystem through a variety of anthropomorphic causes that include the introduction of Nile perch Lates niloticus and over-fishing. As a result there have been species extinctions and declining fish population trends. This thesis explores options for reversing these declining population trends and the restoration of collapsed fisheries based on indigenous non-cichlid species. A candidate species was chosen - the cyprinid fish Labeo victorianus. This thesis studied various aspects of L. victorianus' reproductive biology in two geographically distant populations. These included general reproductive patterns in relation to proximate environmental conditions, gonadal development and recrudescence, sex development, characterisation of genetic and morphological diversity, and induced spawning. Fish from both populations were found to be potamodrometic, and highly fecund, iteroparous spawners. L. victorianus was also shown to be an undifferentiated gonochorist, where all individuals pass through an intersexual juvenile stage prior to differentiation, and maturation to either sex. Sexual maturity was attained at a significantly larger size within the Kagera River than that of Sio River fish – possibly as a response to genotypic and/or phenotypic differences. Spawning seemed to be synchronised with rainfall in Kagera River - a pattern that was not strictly adhered to with the Sio River. Thorough microscopic investigation of recrudescence patterns indicated there was uninterrupted spawning in fish from the Kagera River followed by Type I oocyte atresia. In contrast, there was a 90% spawning failure, as characterised by Type II oocyte atresia, within the Sio River population. Aspects of spermatogenesis and sperm ultrastructure using light- and ultramicrotomic methods are described. Although the populations had varying reproductive biology parameters and were morphologically distinct, they remained undifferentiated at the mitochondrial level. Both populations were characterised by low nucleotide diversity – a feature attributed to a bottleneck event. The option of captive breeding was explored by conducting induced spawning experiments. Success was only achieved with a decapeptide Gonadotropic Releasing Hormone ([D-Arg⁶, Pro⁹-NEt])-sGnRH) in combination with a water-soluble dopamine receptor antagonist metoclopramide. This thesis stresses the importance of a research-oriented approach in the conservation of Lake Victoria's indigenous fish resources. It was concluded that information needed for the development of management policies can be generated within a reasonably short time period, of approximately three years, with modest levels of funding support.
