Regarding the kinetic analysis of the main peak, the activation energy of the corresponding electron trap was evaluated as 0.96 eV and the frequency factor as ∼1011 s−1. It is proposed that the thermoluminescence in B2O3-Li2O-ZnF2 glass is due to recombination of electrons, thermally released from Zn+ ionic defect sites, with the holes at boron-oxygen hole centres.

Principal component analysis demonstrated that the diatom community structure was determined by a variety of factors including nutrient (ammonia, nitrate) concentrations, hydrology (e.g., water depth and flow) and pH. Hierarchical cluster analysis revealed the absence of any distinct spatial patterns, although distinct benthic diatom communities were recorded during the different sampling periods. The species richness was highest in the middle reach, decreasing from early spring to summer in all reaches. The results of the study provide important insights into the various factors that structure benthic diatom community composition within a permanently open temperate southern African estuary.

Phytobenthos grown on brown tiles, rocks, and bricks showed seasonal variability of the carbon isotope δ13C values using one-way ANOVA (p< 0.05). Phytobenthos community structure did not show great seasonal variation; however, CCA identified water flow, conductivity, ammonium, phosphate, and water depth as important in structuring phytobenthos communities on different substrates. - Description: Wine distillery wastewaters (WDW) are acidic and have a high content of potential organic pollutants. This causes high chemical oxygen demand (COD) values. Polyphenols constitute a significant portion of this COD, and limit the efficiency of biological treatment of WDWs. WDW starting parameters were as follows: pH 3.83, 4,185 mg/l soluble COD (CODs) and 674.6 mg/l of phenols. During operation, amendments of CaCO3 and K2HPO4, individually or in combination, were required for buffering the digester.

Forty three new whole rock oxygen isotope analyses are reported for all the major magma types. All the rocks except a minor suite of dolerites have higher δ18O values than normal mantle. The basic rocks (average of 29=8.8‰) have significantly different δ18O to the acid rocks (average of 10=14.4‰). These data are apparently consistent with previously published petrogenetic models, which propose that the basalts were affected by crustal contamination and that the quartz latites are crustally derived.

Distribution of Ca in highly fractionated peralkaline magmas

In contrast, strongly fractionated peralkaline nepheline syenites and phonolites usually contain greater than 0.5 wt.% CaO. Consideration of known distributions of Ca between crystals and liquid in conjunction with crystal fractionation does not provide an adequate explanation of the contrasting levels of Ca depletion observed. Examination of the suites of late-crystallizing accessory phases in peralkaline rocks suggests that Ca is more soluble in undersaturated magmas than in over-saturated magmas. Activities for CaO in silicic and phonolitic rocks are calculated and the latter have higher CaO activities than the former and this may manifest itself in the different suites of accessory phases and levels of Ca depletion noted in natural rocks.
