Pharmacokinetics of phenylpropanolamine in humans after a single dose study

  • Description: The pharmacokinetics of phenylpropanolamine have been studied in healthy human volunteers following the oral administration of an aqueous solution of the drug (50 mg/200 ml). Blood and urine samples collected throughout the trial were assayed using HPLC with UV detection. The drug was shown to be rapidly absorbed with a mean tmax of 1.47 ± 0.49 h and a mean elimination half-life of 4.0 ± 0.5 h. Phenylpropanolamine is predominantly excreted via the kidney with a mean renal clearance of 0.646 ± 0.089 liter/kg/h and 90.2 ± 1.7% excreted unchanged in the urine. The data were not well described using conventional one or two body compartment models. However, the incorporation of a discontinuous absorption phase into the models resulted in an improved overall fit with better characterisation of the absorption phase.

A stability-indicating HPLC assay with on-line clean-up for betamethasone 17-valerate in topical dosage forms

  • Description: A stability-indicating high-performance liquid chromatographic method with on-line clean-up has been developed for the analysis of betamethasone 17-valerate in topical dosage forms. A short pre-column containing 10 μm octadecylsilane mounted into the sample loop position of an injection valve was used as the primary clean-up step. The utilization of a diode-array UV detector allowed the quantitative analysis of betamethasone 17-valerate together with its degradation product, betamethasone 21-valerate, as well as the qualitative analysis of these compounds, relevant internal standards and the preservatives chlorocresol and methyl hydroxybenzoate contained in the cream and lotion formulations, respectively. Typically, cream and lotion dosage forms were dissolved in acetonitrile and ointments in tetrahydrofuran, internal standards added and aliquots injected onto the analytical system. Dosage form excipients were retained on the loop column and back-flushed to waste with the aid of a second solvent pump while components of interest were allowed to transfer to the analytical column for quantitative analysis. The method is accurate, precise and stability indicating and permits the rapid on-line analysis of betamethasone 17-valerate from complex topical formulation matrices without prior extractions.

  • Description: The Pied Starling is restricted to South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland, but within this region it occupies a variety of habitats. Its modern distribution is certainly influenced by its association with man. However, a comparison with other vertebrate species, and with patterns of plant distribution, suggests that its geographical distribution has been determined primarily by its evolutionary history. A hypothesis for the origin of this species leads to several predictions concerning biogeography in southern Africa.

The head and body of X. punctatus are dark brown, covered with numerous, small, evenly-spaced, silvery/white spots.

Distribution of Ca in highly fractionated peralkaline magmas

  • Description: Many peralkaline rhyolites and granites contain less than 0.15 wt.% CaO. In contrast, strongly fractionated peralkaline nepheline syenites and phonolites usually contain greater than 0.5 wt.% CaO. Consideration of known distributions of Ca between crystals and liquid in conjunction with crystal fractionation does not provide an adequate explanation of the contrasting levels of Ca depletion observed. Examination of the suites of late-crystallizing accessory phases in peralkaline rocks suggests that Ca is more soluble in undersaturated magmas than in over-saturated magmas. Activities for CaO in silicic and phonolitic rocks are calculated and the latter have higher CaO activities than the former and this may manifest itself in the different suites of accessory phases and levels of Ca depletion noted in natural rocks.

  • Description: Twenty-two base adducts of uranyl o-hydroxyarylcarbonyl complexes [UO2L2B] (L = o-hydroxyarylcarbonyl compound, B = H2O, pyridine, pyridine N-oxide) have been prepared. Pure field substituent parameters are used to derive a quantitative order of the electronic effects of the chelate ring substituents. Values of v(U=O) correlate well with these values. Evidence is cited suggesting almost complete non-aromaticity of the chelate ring, and the transmission of the electronic effects of the chelate ring substituent through the uranium atom in the pyridine and pyridine N-oxide base adducts.

Smith Institute of Ichthyology; No. 11 , Introduction: The status of the species of Elops present in the Indian Ocean along the southern part of Africa has been uncertain in recent times. Two names have been applied - Elops saurus Linnaeus, 1766 and Elops machnata (Forsskål, 1775) by numerous workers up to the present despite three revisions of Elops concluding that only one species, E. machnata, occurs in the western Indian Ocean (Regan, 1909; Bertin, 1944; Whitehead, 1962). These workers also demonstrated that Elops saurus is fotmd only in the western Atlantic Ocean and can be separated 100% of the time from E. machnata by vertebral counts (73-82 in E. saurus and 60-66 in E. machnata). Why, then, have workers persisted in using both names but not exclusively one or the other? There appear to be two reasons: 1. Some workers regard Elops to consist of one world-wide tropical species (in which case E. saurus is the oldest valid name). 2. The inadequate material upon which Regan, Bertin and Whitehead based their conclusions about the species of Elops. The first idea does not appear to be tenable with the evidence presented in the three species revisions and I regard it as erroneous. The second reason is real. We lack the basic information on geographic variation, if any, for the Indian Ocean population. Regan (1909) examined two specimens, Bertin (1944) an unknown number and Whitehead (1962) seven specimens. Whitehead (1965:231) indicates some doubt about the South African population and its status relative to the West African species E. senegalensis Regan, 1909. Furthermore, both Whitehead (1965) and Losse (1968) suggest that E. machnata and E. hawaiensis Regan, 1909 possibly may be subspecies of the same species, but indicate present data to be inadequate. This paper documents meristic and morphometric variation of 39 Elops mostly taken in South African estuaries as a first step toward understanding variation of the southern-most population in the Indian Ocean. South of Durban, South Africa, Elops machnata frequents the coastal waters only during the warmer months and is known to reach Mossel Bay. No species of Elops has been reported along the colder south western coast of southern Africa. The size range examined is large, 30 mm-900 mm SL (or to 6,9 kg), but does not include the maximum recorded size in South Africa of 13,7 kg. Losse's (1968) data for central East Africa are of nearly comparable size range and provide a useful comparison.
