- Description: This is an anthropological study of the effectiveness of participatory tools and the Valley Trust Organization in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The research aim was to investigate the relationship between adult learning and the usage of participatory tools and to find out the influence/effectiveness of participatory tools on adult learning. The research objectives was to investigate how the adults at the Valley Trust Organization feel about the programme in relation to their intermediate needs, to contribute within the anthropology of education within the context of South Africa with specific reference to KwaZulu-Natal Province and to come up with the recommendations with the view of addressing the challenges facing adult education. The research techniques employed in this study include among others, individual interviews using an interview schedule. To supplement the interviews, secondary sources ranging from scholarly journals, books were used. In the final analysis the researcher has made some recommendations with the view to address some of the challenges.

Conflict narratives of young males in the Blue Crane Route Municipality who experienced domestic violence during childhood

- Description: Domestic Violence is a growing concern globally and currently one of the most dominant negative social forces in South Africa. Many children are experiencing or witnessing Domestic Violence in their households or community, with potentially devastating consequences (Dawes, Long, Alexander & Ward, 2007; Burton, 2007). This study investigates the personal conflict narratives of eleven young adult males who experienced Domestic Violence as children. The young men completed a self-administered questionnaire which included a request for a personal conflict narrative or story. The study then engaged these young men in a two-day workshop of an international conflict management programme, known as the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), which teaches attitudes and strategies to manage conflict (such as self-awareness, empathy and community-building). After the workshop, the participants were asked to re-write their conflict narratives and any changes in their attitudes and strategies to conflict were discussed in group interviews. The study was qualitative; that is, exploratory, descriptive and contextual in nature. Non-probability purposive sampling was employed to identify suitable young adult males between 18-35 years of age from the Blue Crane Route Municipality (Somerset East and Pearston), who experienced Domestic Violence during their childhood. Workers at Victim Support Centres in the Blue Crane Route Municipality assisted with the recruitment of potential participants and requested permission to provide the researcher with their personal information. In analysing the data obtained, the study used a narrative analysis approach to the participants’ pre- and post-AVP workshop conflict narratives. The trustworthiness of the research process and findings was enhanced by employing a variety of data verification strategies.

The main focus of the study is to assess whether the Integrated Development Plan is used as a developmental tool in the Amahlathi municipality. Local government in South Africa has been mandated by the Constitution and other pieces of legislation like the White Paper on local government, the municipal Structures Act and the municipal Systems Act to improve the socio-economic conditions of communities to deliver services to the people and encourage communities to participate in the process of developing the Integrated Development Plan (IDP). Service delivery remains a challenge in the municipality despite the initiative of introducing the IDP to support this local municipality in fulfilling its mandate of taking services to communities. This is reflected in the municipal IDP Mayor‟s foreword where it is indicated that the infrastructure backlogs are still visible in the municipality to the extent that there are areas where there are no operations at all. Also, the report by the Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in 2009 indicated that Amahlathi local municipality is among 57 municipalities in the country that have been identified as the most vulnerable and which therefore needed support for sustenance. This study details these challenges and places particular focus on the utilisation of the IDP as a developmental tool for Amahlathi Local Municipality. From the literature and responses by the respondents, it is clear that local government has to be committed to work with citizens and groups within the communities to find sustainable ways to meet their social, economic and material needs and improve their quality of life. The study is both qualitative and quantitative and questionnaires have been used as a method of collecting data. The responses and results suggested that the community members in the Amahlathi municipality were aware of the existence of the IDP. However, a lot of work still has to be done to ensure that there is development in the communities.
