- Description: The purpose of this study is to improve Local Economic Development (LED) through effective communication strategies between Local Government and the Private sector in Nelson Mandela Bay. The study has been carried out by means of a literature and a primary study. Effective communication is one of the key elements which contribute to the success of Local Economic Development implementation. The communication strategies in Local Economic Development have been discussed and analysed to determine the ineffective methods of communication in Local Economic Development implementation. The literature indicated that a good communication strategy is determining the most effective method of communicating with ones’ target audience. The findings of the primary study revealed that the communication strategy between the stakeholders was not fully maximised in improving Local Economic Development implementation. It also revealed secondary factors that contributed to the ineffectiveness of Local Economic Development implementation. In order to improve the current communication strategies, the researcher recommended that new forms of communication medium between Government and the Private sector could be introduced. Lastly, the secondary factors which contribute to ineffective Local Economic Development implementation were analysed and recommendations were suggested.

The determination of a strategy for the implementation of learnerships in the catalytic converter canning industry in the Eastern Cape

- Description: The Eastern Cape Region, once had sufficient job seekers with automotive component manufacturing skills and experience. Indications are that this pool has been desiccated. The draining of skills out of the area is starting to affect growth potential and competitiveness in the industry in the area. In 1998, the Skills Development Act was passed to implement the National Skills Development Plan, and to encourage employers to train personnel. The strategy promotes a three faceted approach to encourage the development of skills; Workplace Skills Development Plans, Learnerships and Sector Specific Initiatives. This study will focus on the implementation of learnerships in the Catalytic Converter Canning Industry. The aim of this research is to verify the skills shortages; identify which skills are required by the Catalytic Converter Canning Industry in the Eastern Cape and propose a strategy of addressing these needs by means of learnerships. By studying the Legislation supporting the National Skills Development Plan, conducting a literature study, and interviewing knowledgeable people in the industry, the skills requirements of the industry were identified. Thereafter, a questionnaire was drawn up and completed together with representatives from Eberspächer South Africa, Faurecia Exhaust Systems South Africa, Precision Exhaust Systems and Tenneco Automotive South Africa, the active manufacturers of catalytic converters, for OEM’s worldwide, who are based in the Eastern Cape Region. The empirical study confirmed the findings of the research and skills deficiencies were identified. In conclusion, a strategy is proposed whereby the Catalytic Converter Canning Industry could address the skills shortage by the implementation and development of learnerships.

Studies on the kallikrein-kininogen system of the ostrich (Struthio camelus)

- Description: Ostrich organs/tissue/fluids were screened for plasma kallikrein-like, tissue kallikrein-like and tonin-like activity in a continuous-fluorogenic-assay system using Pro-Phe-Arg-7-amino-4-methylcoumarine, Phe- Arg-7-amino-4-methylcoumarine and Val-Leu-Arg--7-amino-4-trifluoro-methylcoumarine as substrates. Ostrich liver and kidney showed the highest specific plasma kallikrein-like activity. Ostrich adrenal glands and kidney showed the highest specific tissue kallikrein-like and tonin-like activity. Ostrich high molecular weight kininogen was purified from plasma and low molecular weight kininogen was partially purified. The N-terminal amino acid sequences of both high- and low molecular weight kininogens from ostrich plasma were determined. Ostrich plasma high molecular weight kininogen was purified as a 118 kD protein. The purified high molecular weight kininogen inhibits the cysteine proteinase papain at a ratio of one molecule HKG to two molecules of papain. Ornitho kinin-like molecules were detected in ostrich urine using reverse phase HPLC.
