An assessment of community partnerships with Amadlelo Agri in the Keiskammahoek dairy: A case of Amahlathi Local Municipality

- Description: The study is based on partnerships between a rural agricultural community of South Africa and a private dairy company based in the Eastern Cape Province. The Department of Rural Development took an initiative to revitalise all the schemes inherited from the former homelands. Although profits earned from agriculture tend not to be immediate but rather gradual, the advancement of agriculture stimulates economic activity in other sectors. Amadlelo Agri in partnership with the communities and Government have turned this into a multi- million-rand profitable business. The challenge is how to replicate the model to operate on a large scale. The current setup has its pitfalls, and these include cutting of fences and allowing village animals to graze in the pastures belonging to the Dairy. To ensure that the study was well articulated and to assess and address those challenges, the project utilised a case study inquiry of the Amahlathi local municipality in the specific partnership of Amadlelo Agri and the Keiskammahoek community in shared milk ownership initiative. Primary data was collected using simple mixed methods research approach to 8 community members as the instrument was more aligned to the qualitative nature of the inquiry. Gathered data was organised and cleaned manually for analysis. Following the review and discussion of the findings the main findings that the study observed in the assessment of the benefits of community partnerships or sharedownerships are as follows: female and youths are not participating in such types of programmes; contradiction exists between participants regarding the objectives of the initiative; there is a lack of clarity from the developer side with regards to the type of shared ownership initiative; farmers lack the know-how of appropriately handling funds, strategic planning and marketing skills; partnerships are very influential in the creation of work culture and coordination in the community; resource endowment is a crucial factor hindering small scale farmers; and farmers’ training, development and update is lacking consistency. Recommendations put emphasis on ensuring that training is consistent and rigorous to ensure that the community will gain experience of the value of the project which can motivate and ensure that protection is improved by the same community members due to sense of ownership.

An investigation into bile formation of Wistar rats for excretion of injected gold nanoparticles

- Description: There is an increase in the use of nanoparticles (NPs) throughout the world. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are commonly used NPs in the field of biomedicine. NPs bigger than 8 nm are excreted via the hepatobiliary system. Bile acids (BAs) are regarded as the main components of bile. If there is a decreased or increased secretion of BAs, the composition of microbiota in the gut can change. Under normal physiological condition BAs fluctuates daily without causing any harm. Nevertheless, it is the long-term changes in bile acid secretion that can affect microbiota in the gut. If there is an increased excretion of AuNPs via hepatobiliary pathway it can alter bile formation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the hepatobiliary excretion of AuNPs will alter the bile formation two weeks after intravenous administration of 14 nm AuNPs to Wistar rats. Rat liver samples of two previous experiments were used to investigate bile formation. The rats had been injected intravenously with a single dose of citrate capped and functionalised AuNPs. These rats were killed 14 days later. Small pieces of liver were stored in RNAlater. The mRNA of different enzymes and transporters in the hepatobiliary system were quantified in these samples and compared with suitable control. As a reference the mRNA of the same enzymes and transporters were extracted and quantified in rat liver that were killed one day after injection with one of the abovementioned functionalised AuNPs. The study shows down-regulation of genes responsible for conjugation of BAs whereas the rate-limiting enzymes were not significantly changed. This was the first study to investigate the formation of bile in relation to the use of AuNPs. The effect and consequences of AuNPs on the hepatobiliary system need further investigation.

The relationship between leadership styles and talent retention within South Africa

- Description: The challenge of retaining employees is becoming increasingly difficult. This purpose of this study was to examine if employee leadership style preferences are currently being met and whether a relationship exists between leadership styles and talent retention. Data from leadership styles and talent retention questionnaires was used in the analysis. The results of the paired sample t-test indicated that leadership style preferences were not currently being met by employees providing input to the research question. The relationship between leadership styles and talent retention were explored using a correlation and a relationship was found to be significant thus supporting the research question. Multiple linear regression analysis provided further support in this relationship and investigated to what extent leadership styles influence retention. A significant positive relationship was found in that the experience of negative or positive levels of leadership styles, will influence employee retention. Leadership styles are not currently being met by employees thus the retention of employees are at risk for organisations in South Africa. The study concludes with recommendations for research and Industrial and Organisational Psychologists in practice.

She is often the main protagonist behind various peace-making efforts both regionally and continentally, and now she plays an even more important part in the African Union. In July 2012 South African candidate Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was elected as chairperson of the African Union Commission, in an election which highlighted a need to investigate the perception of South Africa in the African Union. South African foreign policy has gone through various stages, from being internationally isolated during the apartheid era to being on the forefront continentally during the successive post-apartheid presidents. The electoral discourse in 2012 however, highlighted some divergent opinions on South African foreign policy which this study investigates. What was identified during the election campaign was a possible negative perception of South African foreign policy, both politically and in terms of the private sector. The study sought to investigate how South Africa is perceived on the African continent, and in order to reach a conclusion it performed a policy analysis as well as a qualitative discourse analysis of the statements given during the election. The policy analysis contextualises and explains South African foreign policy agendas and choices, and the discourse analysis sought to reveal any negative perceptions of South African foreign policy. The findings of the study are that there is a general negative perception of South Africa and her foreign policy in Africa, due to several reasons, which will be discussed in the following study. The negative perceptions stem from the Eastern region, the Western region, as well as from South Africa itself, through political analysts and experts.
