- Description: The Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF) located in the Northern Cape Province about 700km south west of Johannesburg contains 80% of the world manganese ore reserves. Mamatwan Mine is hosted within the low grade Mamatwan type ore and is located in the southernmost tip of the KMF. This mine is an open pit mine which is divided into three benches namely the top cut, middle cut and bottom cut. These three benches are structurally controlled by faults which influence the overall grade of the manganese ore. This study is a follow up work to the previous two studies carried out at Wessels Mine and Mamatwan Mine by (Gutzmer and Beukes) in 1995 and 1996 respectively with regards to alteration processes around fault controlled systems in which they concluded that epithermal fluids caused local reduction and bleaching of ore followed by oxidation and carbonate leaching of manganese ore through ascending oxidized groundwater. Metasomatic activity around fault controlled systems is controlled by three main processes namely redistribution, enrichment and depletion. These processes are determined by mobility/immobility of elements from the fault which are introduced into the pre-existing braunite carbonate rich ore. Elements such as Ca, Mg, Si, Fe, C and Mn interact with pre-existing ore due to temperature, fluid pressure, physico-chemical property of fluid gradient. Structurally, faulting and folding contribute to the movement of elements as one end of the system gets depleted the other end of the system gets enriched and vice versa. To better understand this metasomatic activity, it is crucial to conduct mass balance studies of these elements. Grant (1986) introduced the isocon diagram which is a modification of Gresen’s equation (1967) to ascertain which elements are directly or indirectly related to alteration through enrichment and depletion of Ca, Mg, Si, Fe, C and Mn. As the section approaches from altered to less altered manganese ore the mineral chemistry gradually changes from a manganese rich matrix composed of manganomelane and todorokite to a carbonate rich matrix composed of braunite, dolomite, kutnohorite and Mn-rich calcites.

Missing values: a closer look

- Description: Problem: In today’s world, missing values are more present than ever. Due to the ever-changing and fast paced global society in which we live, most business and research data produced around the world contain missing data. This means that locating data which is meticulously precise can be a hard task in itself, but at times may prove essential as the consequences of making use of incomplete data could be disastrous. The reasons for missing data cropping up in almost all forms of work are numerous and shall be discussed in this dissertation. For example, those being interviewed or polled may choose to simply ignore questions which are posed to them, recording equipment may malfunction or be misplaced, or organisers may not be able to locate the respondent in order to rectify the missing data. Whatever the reasons for data being incomplete, it is necessary to avoid having to use inefficient and incomplete data as a result from the above problems. Therefore, various strategies or methods have been developed in order to handle these missing values. It is important, however, that these strategies or methods are utilised effectively as missing data treatment can introduce bias into the analysis. This dissertation shall look at these and other problems in more detail by using a data set which consists of records for 581 children who were interviewed in 1990 as part of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY). Approach: As mentioned above, many strategies or methods have been developed in order to deal with missing values. More specifically, traditional methods such as complete case analysis, available case analysis or single imputation are widely used by researchers and shall be discussed herein. Although these methods are simple and easy to implement, they require assumptions about the data that are not often satisfied in practice. Over the years, more up to date and relevant methods, such as multiple imputation and maximum likelihood have been developed. These methods rely on weaker assumptions and contain superior statistical properties when compared to the traditional techniques. In this dissertation, these traditional methods shall be reviewed and assessed in SAS and shall be compared to the more modern techniques. Results: The ad hoc techniques for handling missing data such as complete case and available case methods produce biased parameter estimates when the data is not missing completely at random (MCAR). Single imputation techniques likewise produce biased estimates as well as result in the underestimation of standard errors. Although the expectation maximisation (EM) algorithm yields unbiased parameter estimates, the lack of convenient standard errors suggests that using this algorithm for hypothesis testing is not a good idea. Multiple imputation, however, yields unbiased parameter estimates and correctly estimates standard errors. Conclusion: Ignoring missing data in any analysis produces biased parameter estimates. Using single imputation to handle missing values is not recommended, as using a single value to replace missing values does not account for the variation that would have been present if the variables were observed. As a result, the variance will be greatly underestimated. The more modern missing data methods such as the EM algorithm and multiple imputation are preferred over the traditional techniques as they require less stringent assumptions and they also mitigate the downsides of the older methods.

Modelling the performance of a calorifier installed at a university residence intended to be retrofited by an air source heat pump

- Description: Sanitary hot water production contributes significantly to the electrical energy consumption in the university campus. An in-depth understanding of the current hot water technology, number of students, capacity of water used per student, time of use of hot water, total volume of hot water consumed and the total energy used on an average weekday in a university residence are very crucial in opting for energy efficient technology like an air source heat pump (ASHP) water heater. The study focused on quantitative and qualitative analysis of data collected for the hot water profiles in one of the university residences (Elitheini 1) from the conduction of experiment and questionnaires. The results revealed that 94% of the 75 students used hot water during the Eskom morning peak and 61% during the Eskom evening peak. In addition, the average daily energy consumption of the 12 kW Calorifier was 139.49 kWh, while the measured volume of hot water usage was 1950 L which is in strong agreement with the total volume (1945 L) of hot water consumption from the questionnaires. The p-value of the average volume of hot water usage measured by experiment and questionnaires was 0.7 and is of no mean significant difference. The monthly energy consumption for the week days was projected to be 2929.31 kWh. By retrofitting of calorifier with an ASHP unit, the energy consumption could reduce to 976.43 kWh based on its consecutive coefficient of performance of 3. Finally, from the energy consumption reduction analysis and the current Eskom tariffs, it can be alluded that the payback period of the proposedASHP unit as a retrofit to the calorifier is going to be less than 2 years and is worthy to invest into such technology under this study due to its favourable payback period and the reliability and lifespan of the ASHP unit.

- Description: Water quality management makes use of water quality models as decision making tools. Water quality management decisions need to be informed by information that is as reliable as possible. There are many situations where observational data are limited and therefore models or simulation methods have a significant role to play in providing some information that can be used to guide management decisions. Water quality modelling is the use of mathematical equations and statistics to represent the processes affecting water quality in the natural environment. Water quality data are expensive and difficult to obtain. Nutrient sampling requires a technician to obtain ‘grab samples’ which need to be kept at low temperatures and analysed in a laboratory. The laboratory analyses of nutrients is expensive and time consuming. The data required by water quality models are seldom available as complete datasets of sufficient length. This is especially true for ungauged regions, either in small rural catchments or even major rivers in developing countries. Water quality modelling requires simulated or observed water quantity data as water quality is affected by water quantity. Both the water quality modelling and water quantity modelling require data to simulate the required processes. Data are necessary for both model structure as well as model set up for calibration and validation. This study aimed to investigate the simulation of water quality in a low order stream with limited observed data using a relatively complex as well as a much simpler water quality model, represented by QUAL2K and an in-house developed Mass Balance Nutrient (MBN) model, respectively. The two models differ greatly in the approach adopted for water quality modelling, with QUAL2K being an instream water quality fate model and the MBN model being a catchment scale model that links water quantity and quality. The MBN model uses hydrological routines to simulate those components of the hydrological cycle that are expected to differ with respect to their water quality signatures (low flows, high flows, etc.). Incremental flows are broken down into flow fractions, and nutrient signatures are assigned to fractions to represent catchment nutrient load input. A linear regression linked to an urban runoff model was used to simulate water quality entering the river system from failing municipal infrastructure, which was found to be a highly variable source of nutrients within the system. A simple algal model was adapted from CE-QUAL-W2 to simulate nutrient assimilation by benthic algae. QUAL2K, an instream water quality fate model, proved unsuitable for modelling diffuse sources for a wide range of conditions and was data intensive when compared to the data requirements of the MBN model. QUAL2K did not simulate water quality accurately over a wide range of flow conditions and was found to be more suitable to simulating point sources. The MBN model did not provide accurate results in terms of the simulation of individual daily water quality values; however, the general trends and frequency characteristics of the simulations were satisfactory. Despite some uncertainties, the MBN model remains useful for extending data for catchments with limited observed water quality data. The MBN model was found to be more suitable for South African conditions than QUAL2K, given the data requirements of each model and water quality and flow data available from the Department of Water and Sanitation. The MBN model was found to be particularly useful by providing frequency distributions of water quality loads or concentrations using minimal data that can be related to the risks of exceeding management thresholds.

- Description: Information regarding drug metabolism in veterinary species, especially horses, remains fragmented and incomplete. This information is essential for detection of metabolites of potential performance-enhancing substances in horseracing and for veterinary drug development. Equine liver microsomes have been used to study metabolism of a limited number of drugs, but these provide little information about individual drug metabolizing enzymes. Recombinant CYP enzyme systems are commonly used to determine contribution of individual CYP to metabolism of specific drugs. A limited number of recombinant equine CYPs have been expressed in insect cells and mammalian cell lines. However, there are no reports of recombinant equine CYP1A2 enzyme. In this study, equine CYP1A2 was identified, codon-optimized, cloned and expressed in E. coli BL21 cells. Multiple sequence alignments of equine CYP1A2 revealed an amino acid sequence identity of 83.69% to its human homolog which has previously been expressed in E. coli. The enzyme was expressed using both auto-induction and IPTG induction. Expressed equine CYP1A2 had a size of about 55 kDa, and was insoluble after cell lysis. Sarkosyl- solubilized CYP1A2 was purified using nickel affinity chromatography and gel filtration. For activity reconstitution, yeast NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase was first expressed in E. coli BL21 cells and exhibited activity of 0.13 U/ml. Activity assay with Glo-P450 CYP1A2 assay kit indicated that CYP1A2 was inactive. Despite numerous attempts to obtain the activity, the CYP1A2 remained inactive. Although expression of equine CYP1A2 in E. coli produced non- catalytically active enzyme, this study could be used as the first step in an effort to fully develop a recombinant equine CYP1A2 system.

- Description: South Africa is undergoing rapid urbanization coupled with fast demographic change in the major cities and towns. This economic shift leaves behind underdevelopment, particularly in the rural areas such as the Eastern Cape Province. Underdevelopment of rural Eastern Cape can be understood by revisiting the “native reserve policy” of the Union of South Africa (1910 –1948) and the separate development policies of the apartheid government (1948 –1994). These policies have induced landlessness in the rural Eastern Cape and the destruction of rural livelihoods, poverty and under-development of roads, housing, health, education and sanitation facilities, and constrained development of a sustainable local economy. This study was aimed at determining the temporal and spatial land-use / land-cover changes in and around Alice town in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa by using multi-date remotely Landsat TM images covering 5 time slices for the years 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999 and 2009. This was done by using supervised classification to objectively reconstruct changes in land-use and land-cover by compiling time-series maps with four information classes and using the Kappa Coefficient to assess the accuracy of all map outputs. Results of this investigation point to significant changes in land-use and land-cover over the 25-year study period between 1984 and 2009 with built-up areas expanding by 3720 hectares from 3227 hectares in 1984 to 6947 hectares in 2009. This observation is important because it enhances our understanding of the dynamics of urban growth and provides useful insights that aid urban development planning and policy formulation. The research concludes by recommending the use time series remotely sensed imagery as a decision-support tool for urban and environment management.

- Description: Over the last decade, image classification has been widely used as a change detection method and provides detailed information for detecting and monitoring changes in land use and land cover (LULC). The main objective of this study was to reconstruct long-term changes in the spatial distribution of different vegetation types in the Swartkops Estuary from 1983 to 2013. The Swartkops Estuary is ecologically important for its wide range of vegetation types that are habitat to estuarine and riverine organisms. Four Landsat images for the years 1984 (Thematic Mapper), 1993 (Thematic Mapper), 2003(Enhanced Thematic Mapper +) and 2013 (Operational Land Imager) were used with the aid of aerial photographs that were used as an ancillary data source. The research methodology comprised of supervised classification, classification accuracy assessment and image differencing. Supervised classification was performed and results of the image classification process for the four time periods were compared to derive information on changes that occurred over the 29-year study period. Images were classified into the following classes: Estuarine water, Salt works, Zostera capensis, Spartina maritima, Terrestrial vegetation, Salt marsh, Swartkops thicket, Built-up areas, Bare areas, and Beach sand, using the Maximum likelihood classifier on Erdas IMAGINE 2014 Software. The significance of the image classification was tested using linear trend regression analysis. Image differencing was performed using 1984 and 2013 Landsat images to reconstruct overall changes in vegetation distribution of the Swartkops Estuary. Results of this investigation revealed significant changes in all land cover types, 24 ha increase from 1984 to 2013 in Zostera capensis as well as Spartina maritima, salt marshes increased by 14 ha between 1984 and 2013, terrestrial vegetation declined by 18 ha between 1984 and 2013. There was a stable increase in estuarine water from 1984 to 2013 by a total area of 29 ha. Water increased by 14 ha between 1984 and 1993, 11 ha increase between 1993 and 2003. However, there was a decline in estuarine water in the period between 2003 and 2013.This decline is associated with the increase in submerged macrophytes like Zostera capensis which utilise open water habitat. The dominant salt marsh species Limonium peregrinum, Sarcoconia pillansii and Spartina maritima occurred in the intertidal, supratidal and floodplain areas where the water table was the shallowest, with the soil moisture being the highest. These results indicate that Remote Sensing and GIS can be effectively used to detect and monitor changes in estuarine biodiversity and habitat in South Africa.

- Description: This work presents the nonlinear properties of six Sn(IV) Phthalocyanines. Three of the phthalocyanines are linked by an alkylthiol substituent and the rest are linked with a phenoxy substituent. For all six compounds non-linear optic analysis was carried out in four solvents: chloroform, toluene, dichloromethane, and tetrahydrofuran, and their differences were recorded. Calculation of the linear, singlet excited, triplet excited and two photon absorption cross-sections were also carried out and the results compared. To form a comparison the first order hyperpolarizabilities, DFT calculations were also performed and the results compared to see if the behaviour between the two properties can be predicted using DFT.

- Description: Astronomy dates back to the early man’s impression of the heavens with little information recorded including some drawings of comets, eclipse and supernovas[1]. Major progress has been made in the field of Astronomy since then. Scientific curiosity to probe the universe in attempt to answer questions such as the origin of the universe, the matter it is made of, the formation of stars, planets and galaxies, and tracking life in other solar systems has brought about the need for more advanced tools capable of detailed observations. In 1608 H. Lippershey developed the first refracting telescope[2], [3]. A year later Galileo used a similar telescope pointing skywards discovering mountains and craters on the earth’s moon, the moons of Jupiter and the phases of Venus. Over the years telescopes have been developed with advancements from the optical telescope towards much larger and more sensitive radio telescopes. The first radio signal from space was detected by Karl Jansky and ever since then astronomers have been using radio telescopes to explore the universe by detecting radio waves emitted by cosmic objects[4]. The ability of radio telescopes to detect weak signals is related to the signal capture surface. As the demand for sensitivity, transmission bandwidth and data rate increases, so does the need for telescopes with a large field of view and capability to observe different parts of the sky at once[5]. This is possible with radio telescope array, with the data from the antennas combined electronically to produce a high resolution image of the sky. The South African MeerKAT radio telescope is an array of 64 interlinked antennas each transmitting up to 160 Gbps of data to the central processing site over optical fibre which is ideal for carrying large volumes of data at high speeds. The MeerKAT telescope is a precursor to the Square kilometer Array which will have up to 50 times the sensitivity and 10000 times the survey speed than the best telescope[6].

Optimal cycle dating of large financial time series

- Description: The study of cycles in the context of economic time series has been active for many decades, if not centuries; however, it was only in recent decades that more formal approaches for identifying cycles have been developed. Litvine and Bismans (2015) proposed a new approach for dating cycles in financial time series, for purposes of optimising buysell strategies. In this approach, cycle dating is presented as an optimisation problem. They also introduced a method for optimising this problem, known as the hierarchical method (using full evaluation 2, or HR-FE2). However, this method may be impractical for large data sets as it may require unacceptably long computation time. In this study, new procedures that date cycles using the approach proposed by Litvine and Bismans (2015), were introduced, and were speciffically developed to be feasible for large time series data sets. These procedures are the stochastic generation and adaptation (SGA), buy-sell adapted Extrema importance identity sequence retrieval (BSA-EIISR) and buysell adapted bottom-up (BSA-BU) methods. An existing optimisation technique, known as particle swarm optimisation (PSO), was also employed. A statistical comparison was then made between these methods, including HR-FE2. This involved evaluating, on simulated data, the performance of the algorithms in terms of objective function value and computation time on different time series lengths, Hurst exponent, and number of buy-sell points. The SRace methodology (T. Zhang, Georgiopoulos, and Anagnostopoulos 2013) was then applied to these results in order to determine the most effcient methods. It was determined that, statistically, SGA, BSA-EIISR and BSA-BU are the most effcient methods. Number of buysell points was found to have the largest effect on relative performance of these methods. In some cases, the Hurst exponent also has a small effect on relative performance.

Optimising syzygium cordatum dye extraction and subsequent cotton dyeing incorporating organic electrolytes

- Description: The present investigation was carried out to optimize the extraction of natural dye from Syzygium cordatum,bark trees and then to evaluate its use in the dyeing of cotton fabric incorporating organic electrolyte. The bark was collected from recently fallen trees and twigs pruned from old trees, since they have greater dye content than the younger trees, dried for two weeks, crushed with a hammer and ground into powder. Grinding of bark was done to ensure a uniform particle size with a large surface area to facilitate quick extraction. The relevant conditions for natural dye extraction using a methanol/water mixture were optimized by Response Surface Methodology (RSM), with the help of Design Expert Version 7.0. The central composite design (CCD) was applied to design experiments for the evaluation of the interactive effects of the three most important operating extracting variables namely, temperature, time and liquor volume on 25g bark powder. This approach decreased the required number of experiments, and the following optimized extraction conditions were derived; temperature 700C, time 51minutes and material-to-liquor ratio 1:16. Dye used for subsequent dyeing was extracted using the optimized conditions. To determine the best conditions for dyeing cotton fabric with the dye extract, dyeing was carried out in a rotating canister machine, using two different organic electrolytes, namely trisodium nitrilo triacetate (trisodium NTA) and dimethylformamide, as mordants. The use of organic electrolytes, as mordants, was to ensure eco-friendliness of the dyeing, and with a maximum concentration of 3g/L being used to reduce the effluent load. Three different mordanting techniques, namely simultaneous, pre-mordanting and post-mordanting were investigated so as to establish which is best. The impact of the two organic electrolyte mordants on certain physical properties of the cotton fabric was also determined. The dyeing of cotton with theSyzygium cordatum bark dye extract, in conjuction with an organic electrolyte, generally showed good results, with trisodium NTA superior to dimethylformamide as a mordant. An increase in trisodium NTA mordant concentration increased dye exhaustion and a dye exhaustion of 23.7% being achieved with 3g/L pre-mordanting. This is still relatively low, however, and the use of an exhausting agent needs to be explored. The fabric dyed with a mordant, exhibited good wash, rub and perspiration fastness, with trisodium NTA superior to dimethylformamide. The use of trisodium NTA increased the strength of the dyed fabric whereas the use of dimethylformamide decreased it. In general, pre- and simultaneous mordants were better than post-mordanting. It has been shown that the dyeing of cotton, using Syzygium cordatum bark dye extract, in conjuction with an organic electrolyte, particulary trisodium NTA, has potential and can be recommended for craft applications. Optimised conditions for dye extraction and cotton dyeing have been derived and which can be recommended for use by crafters in Swaziland.

- Description: Since the scientific community anticipates a general change in the global climate, it has become increasingly important to develop predictive models which encompass mechanisms to generate reliable forecasts of the effects this change on ecological communities and processes. To this end, the oxygen- and capacity- limited thermal tolerance (OCLTT) theory has been developed as a link between various physiological processes, the thermal aspect of climate change and the associated shifts at different levels of biological organization. This study set out to assess the general applicability of the OCLTT theory in eurythermal pulmonate and patellogastropod limpets, whose distributions overlap on the high shore rocks of the warm temperate, south-east coast of South Africa.This was done by determining their microhabitat use, median lethal temperatures and cardiac, Arrhenius breakpoint temperatures as measures of their upper thermal tolerance limits, in both air and water. The main hypotheses of the study were that the pulmonate limpets would be more common than the patellogastropods in warmer microhabitats during low tide and would have higher thermal limits than the patellogastropods in air and vice versa in water. This was based on the assumption that the two limpet groups have different capabilities of oxygen consumption in air and water, due to differences in their respiratory organs and that this would be reflected in their thermal tolerances based on predictions made by the OCLTT. This assumption was important because oxygen consumption was not measured in this study. Previous research (e.g. Garrity, 1984), showed that a thermal stress gradient exists among rocky intertidal microhabitats. From most to least thermally stressful the gradient is horizontal surfaces> slopes> vertical surfaces> tide pools> crevices. The current study found that, while the pulmonate limpets, Siphonaria capensis and S. serrata, preferred rock pools, sloped, vertical and horizontal rock surfaces, the patellogastropod limpets, Cellana capensis and Scutellastra granularis, preferred rock pools and vertical rock surfaces. Furthermore, the pulmonate limpets were only common on horizontal rock surfaces where specific ameliorating conditions would have mitigated thermal stress there. In addition, C. capensis had similar thermal tolerance limits to the pulmonate limpets in air and the pulmonate limpets had similar and/or higher thermal tolerance limits compared to S. granularis in water. This indicates that the pulmonate limpets did not necessarily prefer warmer microhabitats than the patellogastropod limpets and that there were no differences in the collective upper thermal tolerance limits between the two limpet groups in either medium.Consequently, there was no indication from this study that an assumed superior capacity for oxygen supply translates into greater thermal tolerance and that the hypotheses based on the OCLTT were not supported. Although this was an indirect test of the OCLTT theory, I conclude that this study does not support the notion of its general applicability and that mechanisms other than those outlined by the OCLTT theory may help explain the patterns of thermal limitation observed in the current study.

Patterns of plant diversity and cultural meaning in a rural landscape in the Albany Thicket: effects of land-use and topography

- Description: South Africa is the world's third most bio-diverse country, but pressures on this biodiversity are many and widespread. It is now well recognised that protected areas on their own are insufficient to protect biodiversity, and increasing emphasis is placed on developing models for ensuring the persistence of biodiversity in agricultural and rural landscapes. One of the major challenges, especially in rural areas, is the need to reconcile people’s need to use natural resources with biodiversity conservation. This study aimed to (1) examine the ecosystem services people derive from the natural vegetation and how this is distributed in space and (2) the effects of land use and topo-edaphic factors on species richness, composition and structure and how this is spatially distributed. I investigated two land-use types, i.e. a rural village and adjacent lightly used game farm(s) by comparing 20 sites under each land-use representing the range of topographic position. I sampled respondent’s uses and values, species richness and composition, woody density, structure and composition at these 40 sites. This allowed for comparison between the two land uses but also allowed me to examine the effect of topography and relative soil moisture (both known to have a string influence on vegetation in semi-arid areas), and to relate the ecosystem services to plant species richness, structure and woody composition. People derived a wide range of ecosystem services and this differed with distance from the village and vegetation type. Men and women performed different tasks and had different feelings and derived different use values across the landscapes. Both men and women showed a great appreciation for the thicket forest, Pteronia-dominated and grasslands sites. They recognised these areas and as sacred grounds where they have a strong connection with their ancestors. Women preferred utilising areas closer to the village because they feared crime and wild animals in more remote thicket or forest, while men utilised all areas across the land, but more frequently closer to the village. The older generation had a strong attachment to nature, perceiving it as a provider. The younger generation, especially the young women did not express such a deeply felt connection, but enjoyed getting to see where some of the medicinal plants and useful wood structures were harvested. Younger men would go far into the forest quite regularly, often as far the Great Fish River, when they hunt with their peers. Although a diversity of perceptions were presented, and not all conformed to traditional views and practices, most respondents derived a mix of ecosystem services, with the areas closer to the village providing recreational and direct use value to more people on a more regular basis but spiritual values associated with deep forest persisted, especially among the older generation. Species richness and composition was analysed in relation to Topographic Relative Moisture Index (TRMI), land use and distance from the village to see the effect of topography versus land use on the vegetation. The total number of plant species recorded was 386 for both study sites. Two hundred and ninety two species were recorded in Ntloko and 265 on the game farms. Of the species that were sampled, 121 were recorded in Ntloko only, 94 in the game farms only, and 171 species were shared. The number of useful plant species (fuel, medicine, forage, cultural and edibles) was recorded to be 110, 83 in Ntloko and 63 on the game farms. There was no significant difference in species richness and alpha diversity between the study sites, but the game farms had a higher projected total number of species, reflecting higher beta diversity in the game farms than the communal area. The point-centered quarter method (PCQ) was used to describe woody plant composition, tree density and structure. The woody structure and composition was analysed in relation to the above-mentioned factors and I found no significant difference in the density and overall woody structure and composition between the two study sites. Sites at Ntloko had a positive correlation between soil moisture and woody plant density and a higher density of palatable and unpalatable species. The game farms showed no significant changes in woody plant density with TRMI. This study showed that the communal area maintained comparable plant species richness and vegetation structure and composition to game farms. The rural landscape comprised a gradient from sites close to the village that were heavily impacted, not considered particularly special or sacred but safe, familiar and of utilitarian importance, to sites farther away with denser, less transformed thicket vegetation, which are considered to be of greater cultural, spiritual and aesthetic importance but less safe, familiar and accessible. This suggests that conservation outcomes can be achieved outside protected areas, and that biodiversity is valuable to local residents. Resource management should be implemented to maintain the ecosystem services provided in rural areas in a way that integrates local peoples’ perceptions, goals and values with ecological evidence.

Perceptions and livelihood uses of an invasive alien tree (acacia dealbata) by rural communities in the Eastern Cape

- Description: The negative impacts which invasive alien species have on ecosystems are well documented but there is paucity of information on their impacts on rural communities. Due to ecological impacts that may be associated with Acacia dealbata invasions the Agricultural Research Council Plant Protection Institute is considering releasing a biocontrol agent for A. dealbata. The actual social impacts of A. dealbata invasion and control are likely to be related to its importance in rural livelihoods. This thesis reports on the perceptions and livelihood uses of A. dealbata in the Eastern Cape. Three study sites were assessed, Matatiele, Mount Fletcher and Maclear. The study involved 150 household surveys, one focus group discussion and one transect walk at each site, key informant interviews and frequent house visits to acquire reliable data. Results show that 100 % of households in the three sites use Silver Wattle extensively for firewood. In Matatiele 64 %, 72 % in Mount Fletcher and 84 % of households in Maclear use Silver Wattle for fencing. To carve tools 76 % in Matatiele, 76 % in Mount Fletcher and 84 % households in Maclear use Silver Wattle. For medicinal purposes 18 % in Matatiele, 20 % in Mount Fletcher and 16 % in Maclear use Silver Wattle, whilst 78 % in Matatiele, 80 % in Mount Fletcher and 80 % in Maclear use it for fodder purposes. Many respondents felt that Silver Wattle is too abundant within their areas such that it now has many negative impacts associated with it. Perceptions of local people towards A. dealbata are neither static nor uniform, but are influenced by time since the invasion and now abundance of the species. There are no alternatives which provide the same services provided by Silver Wattle. Benefits and constraints due to A. dealbata invasion are experienced by everyone irrespective of wealth and gender. In conclusion, Silver Wattle is a valuable resource to these rural communities, but increasing abundance is incurring high costs to grazing resources and landscape accessibility.

- Description: Rural development efforts to reduce poverty and enhance food security and generally improve livelihoods in developing countries continue to be constrained by high energy cost. For that reason, renewable energy has been identified as a possible panacea to fill this gap. Renewable energy is cheaper, more accessible and environmentally sustainable and promotes inclusivity. Biogas is a renewable energy that is readily available and easy to use by poor rural households. The use of biogas digesters among households in rural areas of developing countries is a well-known technology. The potential for biogas in these areas has been demonstrated and a strong economic case has been made. However, its adoption and use have been lower than expectations possibly as result of non-economic considerations, including social issues about which rural people hold different perceptions. Perceptions of rural households are important because they influence the behaviour to a large extent. Since limited access to affordable energy in rural areas has encouraged government and private organisations to initiate biogas projects to overcome the challenge, it is important to ascertain the factors that affect attitudes towards the technology. The present study sought to explore perceptions of rural households about biogas production towards rural household income in the Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality. Specifically, this research investigated the state of biogas project being implemented by the University of Fort Hare’s Institute of Technology (FHIT), the perceptions of respondents towards biogas production and determine the contribution of biogas consumption to rural income. The study also aimed to identify the factors affecting the adoption of biogas production in the study area. The study was carried out in Melani village in Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa and employed survey data obtained from 48 households who were enumerated to identify their perceptions on biogas production, with special emphasis on the role and effect contributed to rural income of Melani village. The study employed a cross-sectional research design and purposive sampling technique was used in data collection. Data were collected and captured in Excel and then analysed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) Version 24 Descriptive statistics was used to examine socio-economic characteristics of households and state of biogas production in the area, Bivariate correlation analysis was used to determine the relationships among the key elements of perceptions of household towards biogas adoption, binary logistic model was used to estimate factors influencing adoption of biogas technology by households. The results show that women were dominant for both adopters and non-adopters of biogas. The majority of households were young with mean age of 40 years while for non-adopters were 65 years old on average. The results showed high levels of literacy amongst household adopters. Majority of the households for both adopters and non-adopters of biogas technology were married and unemployed and household size ranged from one to five persons, with social grants being dominant source of income. The bivariate correlation analysis suggests a positive effect of green pepper production and livestock ownership on biogas technology adoption. Age and level of education were negatively correlated with adoption of biogas. The cross tabulation analysis suggests that water scarcity, lack of knowledge about biogas technology, cattle ownership, lack of maintenance and repairing, flooded biogas digesters during rainy season are negatively associated with the uptake of biogas technology. The empirical results from binary logistic model suggest that land size was the key determinant of adoption behaviour towards biogas technology while age of the household head, source of income and level of education may have a negative influence on adoption of biogas technology. Based on the findings highlighted above, the study recommends strategies to encourage households to adopt biogas technology.

- Description: Performance and throughput rates at South African tertiary institutions are low, especially within the science, engineering and technology fields of study. The causes of this poor performance and throughput are difficult to predict, and incorrect assumptions are often made on which students are most likely to fail. The need to investigate this issue is vital in South Africa, where the contributing factors to poor performance and throughput are exacerbated by recent political and economic disparities in the diverse population. In order to better understand the issue within the built environment sector, this study evaluated the performance and throughput rates of fifteen first-year cohorts within the Department of Quantity Surveying at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The main aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the student population within the department, and to develop a framework for the future prediction of a student’s likelihood of success or failure. In order to achieve this objective, a retrospective longitudinal approach, i.e. a cohort study, was adopted. The study plotted the trends in performance and throughput rates over a period of time; it measured the strength of the relationships between several variables and performance and throughput; and it culminated in the establishment of predictors of performance and throughput rates. Ultimately, the prediction variables could be utilised in the development of influence diagrams as prediction frameworks. The research revealed that the performance and throughput rates of students in the department are improving. This highlights the importance of undertaking a narrow, departmental level analysis; as the findings in this smaller sphere do not match the general theory and assumptions covered in the literature.

There are several methods developed for water treatment. These include adsorption, reverse osmosis, precipitation, coagulation and cation exchange. Adsorbents of various characteristics are considered for removal of heavy metals and pollutants. The study investigated the performance of iron pillared Montmorillonite, raw and modified zeolite (acid and base) for the removal of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) in artificially contaminated water. The adsorbents were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transformation Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) instruments. The percentage removal of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) after adsorption process were determined. Iron pillared Montmorillonite showed efficient removal for lead and zeolite for copper and nickel.

In South Africa, the current status quo is unfavourable in the domain of energy, hence the Department of Energy, Eskom and NERSA have embarked on supporting energy efficiency technologies nationwide as a strategic goal in reducing demand on the national grid. Due to the non conservative consumption of electricity from the grid and the insufficient supply to meet its demand, the importation of crude oil is very certain. In addition, the current and most popular technology for pool water heating in the said country is the resistive element which is inefficient and non-cost-effective. The energy consumption of residential swimming pool water heating is very massive, and tariff structure shows a constant rise. Furthermore, there's a current electricity crisis during the Eskom evening peak. Hence, a reliable, efficient, cost-effective and renewable energy technology such as an air source heat pump is required as a retrofit to the existing resistive element. Furthermore, mathematical modelling is a tool that can be used to mimic the dynamic behaviour of a physical or process system. It is a computational language or mathematical equation used to predict the dynamic behaviour of physical systems [Tangwe et al., 2015]. Various methods such as numerical methods have been considered as the particular types of mathematical modelling which have been employed to predict the performance of swimming pool ASHP water heater. However, they were unreliable and expensive. Consequently, this research focused on the experimental determination of the viability and development of a mathematical model to predict the performance of swimming pool ASHP water heater. The benefit of the development and building of this model was attributed to its low cost and credibility to forecast the performance of swimming pool ASHP water heater. Also, this robust mathematical model can be used by an energy service company and system manufacturer to compute the dynamic coefficient of performance of the swimming pool ASHP water heater. Following the above-mentioned information, the research sought to provide a permanent solution to the Eskom evening peak constraint. This is because energy-efficiency, serves as the bridging block between conventional and renewable energy sources needed by Eskom in a bid to provide a balance energy mix and sustainable energy. The implementation of a swimming pool ASHP water heater guaranteed a conducive environment for the population due to the reduction in environmental pollution.

- Description: The Municipal Infrastructure Grant programme (MIG) is South Africa’s largest local government infrastructure development funding. Designed to improve service delivery through financing the cost of eradicating basic services backlogs created by Apartheid’s legacy of ‘separate development’, MIG is also intended to be part of government’s overall strategy to eliminate the ‘triple challenge’ of poverty, unemployment and growing inequality. Through government’s active policy which sought to transform and enhance the municipal infrastructure service delivery capacity, effective project management was identified as an integral function of municipalities with a developmental role in terms of the Constitutional mandate. This led to the establishment of Project Management Units (PMUs) tasked with administering the MIG funds and managing the infrastructure projects effectively. Whilst MIG’s overall key principles were clearly defined in the MIG policy framework, the attainment of project success has proved elusive for most municipalities and this manifestation has only been partially examined. The purpose of this study is to explore factors affecting project success with the establishment of PMUs in Sarah Baartman District Municipality (SBDM) in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa, with the aim of contributing to the refinement of best-practice for project implementation. A multiple case study approach was preferred, preceded by an extensive review of relevant literature on the basic tenets of project success. This exercise culminated in the refinement of research questions which were then posed in interviews to a purposive sample of PMU managers within SBDM. The findings from the study revealed the centrality of the dominant features required to influence the probability of positive outcomes such as institutional capacity, organisational culture and infrastructure governance. The research concludes by proposing ways of improving on these three components in the delivery of municipal infrastructure.

- Description: There exists an ever-increasing crisis in science education where students experience disinterest because of an inability to grasp true understanding of scientific subjects, and therefore there should be a call to increase the research of phenomenology in combination with science education. A rebalance and paradigm shift in the focus of the modes of teaching could result in a great improvement in the learning, comprehension, and intellectual self-confidence of students interested in the sciences. To study this, three research questions were established: How is chemistry perceived by non-chemists; what is the experience of the participants’ during the chemistry practical in a laboratory and; do the participants’ perspectives about chemistry change during the experience. The performed study consisted of a chemistry practical, two art works and, in some cases, an interview. Nine participants were asked to create the art under specific instructions of points of focus, namely their preconceptions prior to the practical (Artwork 1) and their lived experience during the practical (Artwork 2). Participants’ artworks were examined using methods of visual semiotics and classical art analysis techniques, looking at line, shape, and colour choice. The iterative analysis of the interviews from participants 1, 2, 7, and 9 coded with ATLAS.ti 7 software, led to the emergence of themes that constitute the core of the participants’ experience. This phenomenological study presents a path to engage the non-chemist with processes taking place in the laboratory by using ‘Kitchen Chemistry’ and illustrates how a phenomenological engagement with chemistry can make the subject more applicable to the general population of non-chemists.
