- Description: The small business sector is growing rapidly worldwide. It has been noted that the small business sector plays a vital role in the social as well as the economic development of the country. However this has brought about some challenges with regards to tax compliance. Within the Eastern Cape there is a vast difference in customer base, with some taxpayers being illiterate the non-compliance challenge becomes rather a critical focus. The limited tax knowledge within the small business sector as well as the complex tax language has contributed to small businesses being tax non-compliant. It is for this reason that this study became apparent. The primary objective of this study is to identify the variables to improve tax compliance for the small business segment by investigating the determinants of effective communication. More specifically this study will investigate the influence of communication channels, communication frequency, Information Technology Communication and tax education on tax compliance. To achieve the primary objective of this study, secondary and primary research was undertaken. The positivistic research methodology was adopted as relationships were tested as well as it emphasised the quantification of the data collected and analysed. Four determinants of effective communication (Communication Channels, Communication Frequency, Information Technology Communication and Tax Education) served as the independent variables, while Perceived Success of Tax Compliance served as the dependent variable. The majority of respondents were females with a 61% representation and males represented 39% of the responds. Most respondents were between the ages of 36 and 45 years, the age group profile depicts the diversity of the maturity levels within the respondents. From the descriptive statistics it was observed that the majority of the respondents agreed that their businesses were tax compliant. For the independent variables, the reported average mean values ranged from 3.03 to 3.97 with the highest mean value being reported for the variable of Tax Education and the lowest score reported for Communication Frequency. In accordance with the literature review and the findings from the empirical data obtained and analysed in this study, it can be concluded that tax compliance is a function of many variables. The study has revealed that the determinants of effective communication that were identified as independent variables have an impact on the perceived success of tax compliance. In other words, an increase in the independent variable will lead to an increase in the level of tax compliance.

Improving the exhaust pigment dyeing of cotton garments

- Description: Due to the rapid changes in fashion trends, garment dyeing is gaining popularity because of its quick response time and reduced costs, especially when dyeing with pigments. However, a drawback of pigment dyeing of cotton garments is the problem of unlevel dyeing and poor wet fastness, together with the high amount of staining of the dyeing equipment. This research has focused on investigating the effects of varying dyeing parameters on the colour strength and fastness of exhaust pigment dyed cotton garments, with the ultimate aim to improve colour strength, wet rub fastness and wash fastness; as well as try to reduce the amount of staining of the equipment, and in so doing reducing production and effluent treatment costs. The research was undertaken at a textile company, Spectrum Textiles (Pty) Ltd, which has been experiencing problems with poor wet fastness, unlevel dyeing and high staining of equipment for both knitted and woven cotton garments. Trials on knitted and woven garments were carried out in which the effects of the concentrations of the cationising agent, pigment and binder/fixer, on colour strength and dye fastness were investigated, as was also the effects of temperature, pH, material-to-liquor ratio and process route. The dyed fabrics were analysed in terms of colour strength, wash fastness and wet and dry rub fastness. It was found that, in general, increasing the amount of cationising agent, pigment, binder/fixer, pH, temperature and material-to-liquor ratio decreased the colour strength (K/S), with applying the binder/fixer prior to pigmenting mostly producing a higher K/S than when applying the binder/fixer after pigmenting. Furthermore, the use of a fixer achieved higher K/S values than when the binder was used. By the selection of the correct chemical levels and dyeing conditions, level pigment dyeing of cotton garments, with high colour strength, was achieved with Grey Scale ratings of 4 or higher for all the fastness criteria. A single optimum dyeing combination, which produced a high K/S and a Grey Scale rating of 4 or higher for wash fastness and wet and dry rub fastness, was derived.

- Description: In the last century, researchers have studied how performance management systems could be applied effectively to achieve both financial and non-financial performance. This approach was a direct response to the need for strategic measurement systems to measure the performance of the organisation. As a results, various approaches were developed. And Amatola Water Board opted to adopt the Balanced Scorecard as its strategic measurement system. It contains outcome measures and the performance drivers of outcomes, linked together in connectedness relationships, and thus aims to be a proactive control system. Furthermore, the balanced scorecard is developed for use not only as a strategic measurement system but also as a strategic control system. Its purpose enables the departmental and personal goals to be aligned to the organisational strategy. The purpose of this research study was to first examine the extent to which there is a connectedness relationship between strategic performance and business performance. Secondly, the research study examined the extent to which the strategy is understood by all in the organisation. Thirdly, the study also examined the extent to which the performance management system is consistently applied. Finally, the study examined the extent to which performance is recognised and rewarded. Lastly, the research study discusses the empirical results and suggests some improvements to the performance measurement and management system. The researcher chose a quantitative approach to conduct the study. The quantitative approach was influenced by the positivistic research paradigm. A simple random sampling technique was used due to its probability that each unit in the population has an equal chance of being included in the sample. And a questionnaire was used as a data collection instrument. The instrument was anchored to a five (5) point Likert scale the Likert scale required the respondents to indicate their level of agreement with the statement. The statements ranged from strongly disagree to strongly agree. And the data collection instrument consisted of Thirty Five (35) questions. Regarding the pilot study, it was however not conducted for this research. The researcher acknowledged that a pilot study helps the researcher to determine how the questions are interpreted and understood by the respondents, but also indicated that it is only due to limited resources that the researcher omitted to conduct a pilot study. One Hundred and Thirty (130) questionnaires were distributed and one hundred and twenty seven (127) were returned achieving a response rate of ninety six (96) percent. And both Statistical® and SPSS® programmes were utilised for extraction of data for recognised reliability and validity. The research study revealed that Amatola Water has a performance measurement and management policy and it is being implemented. However, the study also revealed that communication and involvement is limited to management and lower level employees are not involved in the process from the beginning. The study showed evidence of lack of training for line management on how to properly execute and administer the performance measurement and management system effectively and successfully. And the analysis indicates lack of understanding of the contents of the shareholder’s compact and organisational strategy by lower level employees. Finally, the researcher made recommendations regarding the improvements in the implementation of the performance measurement and management system. And more recommendations are made regarding the participation of lower level employees in strategic direction and performance of the organization.

Improving understanding of the ecology of Indo-pacific bottlenose dolphins (tursiops aduncus) in Algoa Bay, South Africa

- Description: Site fidelity and spatial distribution of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) were assesed using mark-recapture from opportunistic photographs collected between June 2008-May 2011 in Algoa Bay, South Africa. Over 10 000 photographs were collected, and assessed, resulting in 2472 photographs being catalogued and analysed. In total, 2002 individual dolphins were photographically identified. The discovery curve does not reach a plateau, indicating a large, open population, as a result, the re-sighting rate over the study period was low. 178 (8.9%) animals were re-sighted, and 32 animals these were seen three times or more. The individual which was re-sighted most often was sighted five times. The residency index averaged 0.05 and reached a maximum at 0.25. 41% of the data were collected in 2009, which skewed the identifications per unit effort (IDsPUE) across years (Kruskal-Wallis Anova, KW= 11.59 n=60, p= 0.009) and seasons (KW= 17.47, n= 60, p=0.007). Due to the relatively higher data collection in 2009, identifications across years (KW=13.29, n=60, P= 0.004) and across seasons (KW=17.81 n=60, P=0.007) also differed significantly. In contrast, there was no significant difference is re-sighting across years (KW = 6.9, n=56, p= 0.8) and seasons (KW=12.26, n=56, p=0.6). The association between the 32 individuals seen three times or more was measured using the Half Weight Index, the index ranged from 0 to 1. A dendrogram revealed two social clusters consisting of 23 and 8 animals each, with one individual having no associations. Xenobalanus was recorded on all but five surveys over the study period. Xenobalanus occurrence did not significantly differ across years (KW=1.49, n=42, p=0.68) and seasons (KW= 6.59, n=43, p=0.36). Dolphins were mostly sighted in depths of <15 metres all around the bay. Travelling (36%) behaviour was the most recorded, followed by feeding (29 %), socialising (15%), milling (11 %), Slow travel (6%), resting (2%) and fast travelling (1%). Other than milling the spatial distribution of all behaviours were similar to the general spatial distribution of sightings. The project provides information that can be used for further research and conservation management of T. aduncus. Photographs used in this project were opportunistically collected, which has resulted in the underestimation of photo-identified individuals and consequently results of this project.

In silico analysis, isolation and kinetic characterisation of red algae (Rhodophyta) catalases

- Description: Catalase (EC: 1.11.1.6) is produced by almost all aerobic organism ranging from bacteria to human and is an essential antioxidant enzyme that catalyses the conversion of hydrogen peroxide to water and molecular oxygen, therefore neutralising hydrogen peroxide toxicity. The present study aimed to purify and characterise catalase from Pachymenia orbitosa, a marine red algae found in the Algoa Bay region of South Africa. Bioinformatics analysis was performed to confirm the presence of a catalase gene in the red algae genome. In silico analysis of the Chondrus crispus genome was performed to predict the functional and structural characterisation of the protein encoded by the gene. The Pachymenia orbitosa catalase enzyme was purified to homogeneity using 60% ammonium sulphate precipitation and Sephacryl S-200 gel filtration chromatography. InterProScan confirmed that the Chondrus crispus genome encodes a catalase protein, which is from the mono-functional and heme-dependent catalase-like superfamily. The purified Pachymenia orbitosa catalase enzyme displayed a specific activity of 23 000 units per mg of protein with a 14.94% recovery and 222.91 fold purification. Sodium dodecyl sulphatepolyacrylamide gel electrophoresis indicated a single band, with a molecular weight of around 50kDa. The catalase enzyme exhibited a maximum activity at pH 7 and a temperature of 30℃. It was stable up to 40℃ and rapidly denatured at temperatures above this. The Km and Vmax values for the purified catalase, using hydrogen peroxide as a substrate, were determined from the Lineweaver-Burk plot to be 22.22mM and 1.11x10-4mM.min-1 , respectively, while from the Hanes-Woolf plot, to be 23.4mM and 1.17x10-4mM.min-1 , respectively. The Heme catalase inhibitor (ferricyanide) inhibited the enzyme activity markedly, while sodium chloride and citric acid had only a slight inhibitory effect. Copper sulphate showed a slight stimulatory effect. The physiochemical properties suggest a good application potential in both the pharmaceutical and food industries

- Description: Malaria remains a major health concern with a complex parasite constantly developing resistance to the different drugs introduced to treat it, threatening the efficacy of the current ACT treatment recommended by WHO (World Health Organization). Different antimalarial compounds with different mechanisms of action are ideal as this decreases chances of resistance occurring. Inhibiting DXR and consequently the MEP pathway is a good strategy to find a new antimalarial with a novel mode of action. From literature, all the enzymes of the MEP pathway have also been shown to be indispensable for the synthesis of isoprenoids. They have been validated as drug targets and the X-ray structure of each of the enzymes has been solved. DXR is a protein which catalyses the second step of the MEP pathway. There are currently 255 DXR inhibitors in the Binding Database (accessed November 2017) generally based on the fosmidomycin structural scaffold and thus often showing poor drug likeness properties. This study aims to research new DXR inhibitors using in silico techniques. We analysed the protein sequence and built 3D models in close and open conformations for the different Plasmodium sequences. Then SANCDB compounds were screened to identify new potential DXR inhibitors with new chemical scaffolds. Finally, the identified hits were submitted to molecular dynamics studies, preceded by a parameterization of the manganese atom in the protein active site.

- Description: The worldwide problem of antimicrobial resistance has limited the spectrum of the current affordable and effective antimicrobials. Infections associated with resistant microorganisms impose a major threat to public health and economic stability. Globally, about 700 000 deaths every year can be accredited to antimicrobial resistance. The leading mechanism of resistance amid bacterial pathogens is the extended spectrum beta-lactamases production, which inhibits spectrum activity of several antimicrobial agents. The rise in antimicrobial resistance has compelled an urgent need of developing means of combatting resistance issue amid diseasecausing microbes. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence and antibiogram fingerprints of Enterobacteriaceae recovered from hospital effluents, river water and vegetables in the Eastern Cape Province. A total of eighteen antibiotics from ten different antimicrobial classes were used to determine antibiogram profiles of the MALDI-TOF confirmed isolates. From the MALDI-TOF confirmed isolates, 60% of Enterobacter spp. and E. coli isolates displayed resistance against colistin, while Citrobacter spp. and Klebsiella spp. displayed 90% and 60% resistance against this antimicrobial respectively. These findings outline the need for the development of new antimicrobials. About 75.5% (25/33) of the presumptive Enterobacter spp. were confirmed by MALDI-TOF with 79.2% (19/24), 66.7% (2/3), 66.7% (4/6) been confirmed vegetables, hospital effluents and river water samples respectively. Likewise, about 77.8% (21/27) were confirmed as Citrobacter spp. of which 92.3% (12/13), 66.7% (2/3) and 63.6% (7/11) were from vegetables, hospital effluents and river water samples respectively. These results show that the selected vegetables were highly contaminated with resistant bacteria and thus unsafe to consume uncooked vegetable. Also river water was higly contaminated with resistant microbes, which also shows that these rivers are not fit to be used 17 as drinking water sources and recreational activities. Colistin is an antimicrobial used as a last resort of antibiotics because it exhibits broad-spectrum activity. However from the findings of the work at present, this is no longer the case. The spectrum of this antimicrobial is now reduced by Enterobacteriaceae members. To the best of my knowledge; relatively few resources have been provided to understanding, preventing, and controlling increasing antimicrobial resistance on global, national and local levels.

Incidence of bacterial infections and colonisation in patients admitted to a tuberculosis hospital

- Description: Patients with drug resistant tuberculosis (TB) are treated with multiple antibiotics including moxifloxacin, linezolid, and meropenem, which puts them at greater risk for colonisation by multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria. The objectives of this study were to: (i) assess the antimicrobial prescribing patterns practiced within the hospital by retrospective patient file review; (ii) determine the spectrum of bacterial colonisation in TB patients upon admission and during hospitalisation; (iii) identify bacterial isolates and evaluate antimicrobial susceptibility profiles; (iv) detect antimicrobial resistance genes in the bacterial isolates by PCR and DNA sequencing; and (v) investigate genetic relatedness of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates using Multi Locus Sequence Typing. Nasal, groin and rectal swabs [for the detection of extended spectrum beta lactamases (EBSLs), carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)] were analysed from a cohort of patients (n=37) admitted either from the community (n = 28) or from other healthcare facilities (n=9) to a TB hospital. Swab samples were collected at admission and at four week intervals thereafter during hospitalization. Identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacterial isolates (n=62) were determined at the National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) by the VITEK-MS and Vitek 2 systems respectively. Additional antimicrobial susceptibility testing was conducted by Sensititre Gram Negative Xtra (GNFX2) MIC plates. PCR and DNA sequencing were used for detection of resistance genes. Patients (n=13/37; 35%) were colonized by MDR bacteria (ESBLs [n=11], MRSA [n=2]) on admission. Colonization rates were lower in patients admitted from the community (9/28; 32%) compared to those transferred from other healthcare facilities (4/9; 44%). All admitted patients who did not exhibit colonization at baseline and who were resident within the hospital for longer than 4 weeks (17/37; 46% of total patients) became colonised by an ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae species. No patients acquired MRSA during hospitalisation. Among ESBL Enterobacteriaceae, Escherichia coli (41/62; 66%) and K. pneumoniae [14/62; 23%]) predominated. Nineteen percent (7/37) of patients demised during their hospitalization. Both the Vitek system and Sensititre Gram Negative Xtra (GNFX2) MIC plates susceptibilities were similar for most antimicrobials, however there were discrepancies for tigecycline susceptibility profiles. A high number of isolates exhibited resistance to aminoglycosides and fluoroquinolones. Genes encoding for ESBLs (CTX-M-14, CTX-M-15, SHV-28, OXA-1, and OXY-2-9) were detected among ESBL Enterobacteriaceae. Two Enterobacteriaceae isolates with reduced carbapenem susceptibility did not contain carbapenemase-encoding genes. MLST revealed unique sequence types and genetic diversity among the K. pneumoniae isolates from hospitalised patients. However, the source and colonization routes of these isolates could not be determined, which requires further investigation. This study provides insight into the spectrum of bacterial pathogen colonisation in hospitalised TB patients and suggests a review of infection control programs and practices at the TB hospital.

- Description: Structural equation modelling (SEM), a statistical technique used extensively in quantitative marketing research and other domains, is an analytical approach used to model latent (unobservable) variables. Unlike distribution fitting where simple chi-squared goodness-of-fit assessment yields satisfactory results, model fit in SEM is more difficult. Descriptive goodness-of-fit indices have been developed over the past 50 years to assist in the assessment of model fit. The traditional assessment method requires reporting multiple indices, all of which should reflect an adequate model fit in order for the overall model fit to be deemed good. The choice of indices to report are left to the researcher’s discretion, leading to the indices used to differ considerably. The combination of using the traditional assessment method and differing indices often lead to conflicting results. This study proposes a composite index, combining frequently used indicators in an attempt to obtain a single index method for assessing model fit in SEM that performs better when compared to the traditional assessment method. Composite indices have been used in other domains as an improved method of assessing performance (Barr and Kantor, 2004). The composite index proposed is evaluated using a Monte Carlo simulation study under different experimental conditions. The experimental conditions investigated are sample size, estimation method and model misspecification. These experimental conditions are chosen to investigate as each has been shown to affect the traditional indices performances. The ideal fit indices should be able to detect model misspecification while being insensitive to sample size and estimation methods. This is not always the case with the traditional indices. The composite index proposed is shown to outperform the traditional assessment method under many of the experimental condition combinations. This provides evidence that composite indices may be a more beneficial method of assessing model fit in SEM.

- Description: Quality is a fundamental expectancy in the construction industry. Together with cost and time, it is one of the basic and most important performance indicators in construction projects. The non-achievement of such a crucial aspect of construction can result in construction failures and client dissatisfaction (Zunguzane et al., 2012: 20). The increased pressure on project stakeholders to produce projects that achieve these aspects can become unrealistic, which in turn can contribute to the development of disputes within the construction sector (Love et al., 2010a: 405). Civil engineering project stakeholders employ Quality Management Systems as a tool to increase industry quality performance. The effective implementation of these systems contribute to the mitigation and elimination of rework/non-conformances while enhancing client satisfaction and increasing the project performance concerning cost, quality and time (Bello et al., 2010: 9). The main objectives of this study were to determine whether quality management is implemented effectively on civil engineering projects in order prevent claims against consulting engineers and to further investigate the barriers that impact quality management on civil engineering projects. In addition, the research aimed to determine what impact, if any, the aspects of public sector procurement policy, implementation and management have on the ability of civil engineering stakeholders to manage quality during the design, procurement and construction phases of a project. The study therefore focussed on quality management in the civil engineering industry and investigated the barriers that contribute to ineffective quality management on civil engineering projects under design, procurement and construction related barriers. This study was done in two parts. Firstly, the research adopted a quantitative research approach with a descriptive research strategy. The second part entailed an in-depth study of the current existing theory by means of a literature review. Data was collected via a questionnaire survey and analysed to test the three hypotheses and answer questions relating to the current status of the subject of inquiry. iv The findings of the research confirmed the challenges and frustrations experienced during the procurement implementation activities of public sector clients. The results confirmed that the appointment of incompetent and unqualified civil engineering contractors has a direct impact on the quality of civil engineering projects and the effective implementation of quality management systems.

In the face of the political and economic developments seen in the country since 1994, South Africa is overwhelmed by poverty and unemployment. But efforts to address these problems have not given due recognition to the question of family structure which is complex and varied, with immense potential implications for ownership and distribution of resources and the bargaining strength that are likely to determine the food security status of various farming households. Furthermore, the contribution of households towards agricultural production differs according to the way family organizes itself. This study was carried out to determine the influence of family structures on food security status of farming households in Alice, South Africa. Data were collected from 120 farming households’ selected using purposive sampling method. To collect data, a well-structured questionnaire was administered through face-to-face interviews. Consequent to that, the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and binary logistic regression model. The dominant family structures are nuclear, single-parent, working parent and cohabiting. The analysis revealed that nuclear family where father, mother and their children have access to labour and financial resources could be more comfortable than single parent family. Working parents would probably be more food secure because both parents are able to combine incomes while food insecurity might exist within cohabiting families since the union is less stable because of scarce resources occasioned by their inability to combine their resources to pursue a common goal. The results further revealed that single parent family structures and socio-economic characteristics like age, marital status and year of education of the household head were significant in terms of their influence on food security. The study therefore, recommends that old people should be encouraged to participate in agricultural production due to the wealth of experience gathered over the years. It is probably safe to conclude that encouraging marriage would provide better opportunities to raise the necessary capital to support positive productivity changes that would have implications for enhanced food availability and affordability.

- Description: Introduction: A typical 2000 m rowing race requires maximal force production over six to eight minutes. Optimal distribution of energetic resources during such a race is vital for optimal performance. There is little research examining the pacing strategies employed by rowers, particularly at the sub-elite level. Aim: The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of knowledge of the end-point on pacing during a 2000 m rowing time trial. Methods: Eleven male rowers from a university rowing club volunteered to partake in the study. Each participant completed three experimental trials on an indoor rowing ergometer, each 2000 m. The only difference between the trials was the nature of the information provided beforehand. At the start of the control trial, participants were correctly informed about the distance to be covered. Participants were not informed of the distance to be completed in the unknown trial. For the deceptive trial, participants were told 1000 m would be completed, but when this distance was reached, they were told to continue for another 1000 m. During each trial muscle activity, power output, heart rate, performance time and perceptions of effort were measured.Results: The control trial was significantly (p<0.05) faster than both the unknown and deceptive trials, however the deceptive trial was the fastest of all trials at the 1000 m distance. The unknown trial was slowest at 1000 m and at 2000 m. Muscle activity, RPE, heart rate and power output were significantly (p<0.05) lower in the unknown trial compared to the control and deceptive trial. The control trial exhibited a reverse J-shape pacing profile. The deceptive trial revealed a significant (p<0.05) reduction in performance time, heart rate, power output and muscle activity after the 1000 m interval. The first 500 m interval had the fastest performance and highest power output in all trials. In all trials, RPE was highest at the end of the 2000 m, the greatest reading being obtained at the end of the control trial. During the first 1000 m of the deceptive trial, the dependant variables were similar to those in the control trial. Once the deception was revealed, there was a significant (p<0.05) reduction in the muscle activity, heart rate and power output. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that accurate end-point information is crucial to the development of an optimal pacing strategy, and ultimately to successful performance. Rowers tend to adopt the reverse J-shape pacing profile most often due to the tactical and physiological benefits offered by this strategy. Unknown or inaccurate end-point information resulted in performance decrements due to the uncertainty associated with the exercise bout.

- Description: A need was identified to assess the perceptions of fourth year nursing students regarding the information required by undergraduate nursing students at the point of care for clinical decision making. A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual design was used to conduct this study. The research population comprised of all fourth year nursing students who have been subjected to experiential learning in the various clinical areas during their four years of training. Data was collected by means of in-depth interviews from a purposively selected sample and then analysed using the steps of qualitative data analysis described by Tesch (1990). A pilot study was conducted prior to the main study to determine whether the sampling and interviewing techniques of the researcher as well as the research question, were adequate for data collection. Trustworthiness was ensured by utilising Guba and Lincoln’s (1985) strategies of credibility, dependability, transferability and conformability. Strategies to ensure respect for persons, beneficence and justice were implemented throughout the study. The findings of the study was categorised into two main themes. Theme one; Participants shared their various experiences regarding information needed at the point of care. This theme had five sub-themes which were discussed in detail in chapter three. The second theme was; Participants offered suggestions to address their information needs at the point of care. This theme had four sub-themes and was discussed further in chapter three. The study concludes with recommendations made to the Department of Nursing Science at the Institution where the study was conducted to address clinical practice, education and future research.

- Description: The introduction of Inclusive Education into South African schools has been fraught with difficulty and this, coupled with the poor matric pass rate, has become a cause for major concern. Many teachers are unprepared for the challenge of teaching learners with diverse learning needs. Innovative and creative teaching strategies need to be implemented in order to address the learning needs of all the learners so that all learners can achieve their maximum potential and exit school with the school leaving certificate they seek. Consequently, the aim of this research was to identify creative and innovative teaching strategies which could be implemented by teachers in order to address this diversity. Furthermore, it was hoped that such creative teaching strategies would encourage cognitive learning whereby the study material was fully comprehended and could be used by the learners in different contexts. Music and games were identified as innovative and creative ways in which learners could be encouraged to apply the study material to mock real-life scenarios without having to suffer the consequences of incorrect choices. Since all children love to sing and play, it was believed that the introduction of music and games into the classroom would put the fun back into learning. The study was a qualitative study, with Grade Three teachers, learners and their parents being the participants. The data was generated through the use of observations, a teacher journal, questionnaires and focus group interviews. The findings of this study indicated that the learners benefitted from the introduction of music and games into the classroom as they began to read, write and do calculations more effectively. Not only did their academic skills improve, but music and games had the incidental positive consequence of improving their behaviour. This meant that they were better able to comply with classroom rules and conducted their relationships with others in a more respectful and understanding manner. The study concludes with suggestions on strategies that can be implemented by teachers and parents in order to improve the learning and behaviour of the learners. An improvement in the overall academic achievement of the learners may result in an improvement in the matric pass rate in South Africa as a whole, as well as an improvement in tolerance for and understanding of our fellow man.

- Description: The literature clearly indicates that excessive amounts of salt and sugar, compared to the recommended amounts, are consumed by young children, leading to the earlier presentation of lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes mellitus type 2 and hypertension (Lichtenstein et al., 2006; Grimes et al., 2013). The problem to address is that there is insufficient information available on the intake of sugar and salt in South African children, and more specifically in the Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth areas; this information is necessary to determine which prevention strategies should be developed. The aim of this study was to determine the current intake of salt and sugar of grade five learners at a sample of quintile three schools in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth and to investigate whether there was a relationship between the sugar and salt intake and the BMI (kg/m2) and blood pressure (mmHg) of these learners. A baseline exploratory, quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study design was used. A non-random, convenient sampling method was used with a sample size of 220 consenting learners of Johannesburg and 350 of Port Elizabeth. A semi-quantitative adapted food frequency questionnaire was used to determine the current intake of salt and sugar in the learners. The data was analysed using the SPSS version 22 programme. Ethical clearance was obtained from the relevant bodies. The results were as follows: no significant differences were found between the frequency of consumption of any of the food items that were chosen to represent salt and sugar intake and blood pressure and BMI within either Johannesburg or Port Elizabeth. Therefore, no associations between salt and sugar intake and blood pressure and BMI were found within either area. When comparing the learners of Johannesburg with those in Port Elizabeth a few significant differences were found; mostly showing a weak association. However, there was a moderate association for sugar in tea/ coffee between the underweight and overweight/obese learners of Johannesburg compared to Port Elizabeth. Preferences, peer influence and food culture are suggested reasons for this significant difference. Recommendations of the study were the South African Food-based Dietary Guidelines “Use salt and foods high in salt sparingly” and “Use food and drinks that contain sugar sparingly and not between meals” should continue to be encouraged.

- Description: This research paper has explored the role of Integrated Development Planning (IDP) as a poverty alleviation tool in Koukamma Municipality. The National Development Plan (2011) outlines that political democracy cannot flourish if most of the people of South Africa are still faced with poverty. The plan further states that the current democratic government should proactively prioritise finding plans to eliminate poverty for the people of South Africa. It is a national framework for development, and elimination of poverty and reduction of inequality are its main objectives. Its success will be measured by the degree to which the lives and opportunities of the poorest people of South Africa are transformed in a sustainable manner. Thus, the use of IDP in municipalities is a legislative requirement through the Local Government Systems Act 32 of 2000 and Sections 152/3 of the South African Constitution of 1996. The IDP also ensures that municipalities implement and assess the impact of their developmental programmes and poverty alleviation projects on the objectives of sustainable development. In this study an interview was held with the Municipal Manager of the municipality who is the champion of the IDP which contains poverty alleviation projects, in order to assess their successes and challenges. There were also questionnaires handed out to a sample of the community to assess their satisfaction with the implementation of the IDP and to highlight the socio-economic conditions of the population.

- Description: Water hyacinth, Eichhomia crassipes (Mart.) Solms (Pontederiaceae) is a free-floating perennial weed that is regarded as the worst aquatic weed in the world because of its negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems. It is native to the Amazon Basin of South America, but since the late 1800s has spread throughout the world. The first record of the weed in South Africa was noted in 1908 on the Cape Flats and in KwaZulu-Natal, but it is now dispersed throughout the country. Mechanical and chemical control methods have been used against the weed, but biological control is considered the most cost-effective, sustainable and environmentally friendly intervention. Currently, nine biological control agents have been released against water hyacinth in South Africa, and Neochetina eichhorniae Warner (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is used most widely to control it. However, in some sites, water hyacinth mats have still not been brought under control because of eutrophic waters and cool temperatures. It was therefore necessary to release new biological control agents to complement the impact of N. eichhorniae. Megamelus scutellaris Berg (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) was released in 2013, but little is known about how it interacts with other agents already present in South Africa. It is likely to compete with the established biological control agent, Eccritotarsus eichhorniae Henry (Heteroptera: Miridae), because they are both sap suckers. On the other hand, N. eichhorniae is the most widespread and thus the most important biological control agent for water hyacinth. The aim of this study, then, was to determine the interactions between the two sap-sucking agents in South Africa that presumably occupy similar niches on the plant, and the interaction between M. scutellerais and N. eichhorniae, the most widely distributed and abundant agent in South Africa. Three experiments were conducted at the Waainek Research Facility at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Plants were grown for two weeks and insect species were inoculated singly or in combination. Water hyacinth, plant growth parameters and insect parameters were measured every 14 days for a period of 12 weeks. The results of the study showed that feeding by either E. eichhorniae or M. scutellaris had no effect on the feeding of the other agent. Both agents reduced all the measured plant growth parameters equally, either singly or in combination (i.e. E. eichhorniae or M. scutellaris alone or together). The interaction between the two agents appears neutral and agents are likely to complement each other in the field. Prior feeding by E. eichhorniae or M. scutellaris on water hyacinth did not affect the subsequent feeding by either agent. Megamelus scutellaris prefers healthy fresh water hyacinth plants. In addition, planthoppers performed best in combination with the weevil, especially on plants with new weevil feeding scars. The results of the study showed that M. scutellaris is compatible with other biological control agents of water hyacinth that are already established in South Africa. Therefore, the introduction of M. scutellaris may enhance the biological control of water hyacinth in South Africa.

- Description: The Namibian education system has undergone major policy shifts from a ‘top-down’ hierarchical leadership practice to a more shared and democratic form of leadership in schools. These policies compel principals and school management team members to involve level-one teachers in decision-making and other leadership roles within their schools and beyond. However, to this end, the goals envisaged by policies for teachers to participate in, and contribute to the overall school leadership activities and decision-making have not been fully realised. This was due to the inherent hierarchy of the ‘top-down’ system and autocratic leadership style which remains powerful within the current school practice. Against this backdrop, this study interrogated how teacher leadership can be developed in a rural Secondary School in northern Namibia. The underlying cultural-historical conditions that promoted or constrained teacher leadership development were surfaced. Opportunities for changes in leadership practices through a formative intervention were developed. Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) was utilised as a theoretical and analytical framework in this study together with Grant’s Model of Teacher Leadership (2006; 2008; 2010). Five level-one teachers, two school management members and a school board chairperson were selected as research participants by means of a purposive sampling method. Furthermore, the study used document analysis, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and change laboratory workshops as main tools for data generation. The findings revealed that participants understood the concept of teacher leadership differently and that teachers in the case study school were leading in all four zones of teacher leadership model (Grant, 2006; 2008; 2012) although their roles differed. However, the study also found that teacher leadership development was mostly intensified by managerial structures. It appeared from the findings of this study that conditions such as the role of the school management team (SMT) members in promoting teacher leadership development, a supportive organisational culture, and provision of learning support amongst staff members through the attendance of workshops emerged as factors promoting the development of teachers as leaders. The study also revealed that there were many cultural and historical tensions that constrained the practice of teacher leadership development in school. Thus, the study argues that limited leadership training and an inherent ‘top-down’ hierarchical style of leadership was the main underlying systemic causes that constrained teachers to be developed as leaders. Through the change laboratory workshops, the findings suggested that there was a need for continuous professional development initiatives and leadership training, as alternative way for the realisation of teacher leadership development. Finally, a recommendation that leadership aspects should be constituted in pre-and in-service professional development training as an ongoing practice is made.

- Description: Recent international reports, for example TIMSS (2011 & 2015), point to serious challenges in South African learner performance in Mathematics and Science. Of greatest concern is that research findings (e.g. Graven, Venkat, Westaway and Tshesane 2013) suggest that many South African learners show signs of mathematical knowledge gaps in the lower grades. Hence, there is a need to address challenges of this nature very early in Foundation Phase. This study was undertaken with a view to contribute towards addressing mathematical challenges encountered by learners in Foundation Phase. This empirical enquiry was undertaken under the auspices of the South African Numeracy Chair Project (SANCP) at Rhodes University whose mission is to develop sustainable ways of improving quality teaching and learning of Mathematics in South Africa. A relatively new SANCP programme called Pushing for Progression (PfP) run as part of the after-school Maths Clubs to develop the number sense and four Operations in learners was used to achieve the research aims of this study. Research participants were drawn from the Maths Clubs established by the researcher in a small rural town of Ottosdal in the North West Province of South Africa. This Study is grounded on the Vygotskian perspective and uses the interpretivist qualitative research method for data collection and analysis. Sampling was done opportunistically by enlisting participants (12 teachers and 117 learners) on the basis of their availability and willingness to participate. Pre- and post-assessment of learners’ proficiency on the four Basic Operations was conducted at the beginning and at the end of the research project, respectively. This was done to determine the impact of the project on learner performance. Data analysis was done thematically and through the comparison of learner results of the pre- and post-assessment. The findings point to the effectiveness of the PfP Programme in learner performance. This can be deduced from improved scores between pre- and post-assessment and the observations made by participant-teachers on their respective club learners’ mathematical proficiencies. Accordingly, based on the findings, this study recommends, inter alia, that since the PfP programme is still in its early stages, similar research be conducted elsewhere. Additionally, the Department of Basic Education could consider exploring the PfP programme as one of several other strategies to help improve learner proficiency in Mathematics.
