- Description: The past few months have seen our courageous youth take to the streets to demonstrate their disgust against this system of exploitation and oppression. This militant fervour has touched many young hearts and minds. However, there is always the danger that these energies will burn out and dissipate. Demoralisation can so easily set in if these energies are not constructively channeled. "Channeled into what?” you may ask. ORGANISATIONS. It is only through strong organisations which attempt to give guidance and direction that meaningful action can be undertaken. The WCYL recognises the important need for students to begin to discuss broader issues such as The History of Struggle in S.A. or The Nature of S.A. Society. It is only when students begin to grapple with broader issues such as these, together with more specific ones, in a co-ordinated manner, will their actions be more effective. To this end has "GET ORGANISED" been designed. The handbook is intended as a guide for students in their efforts to organise SRC’s, awareness programmes, among other things, in schools.

- Description: Online version of original print edition of the Special Publication of the J.L.B. Smith Institute of Ichthyology; No. 38 , Recent collecting in the Malawi lakes Chilwa and Chiuta has revealed a new haplochromine cichlid fish, Astatotilapia tweddlei, which is described and illustrated. It is distinguished from most members of this genus by an elongate, rounded caudal fin. Although having a distinctly different colour pattern and more slender pharyngeal bone, it shows a greater similarity to A. paludinosa, known only from the Malagarasi Swamp 1200 km to the north in the Zaire ichthyofaunal province, than it does to members of this genus from the closely adjacent Zambezi province from which this wetland system, in the East Coast province is separated by only some 50 km.

- Description: Online version of original print edition of the Special Publication of the J.L.B. Smith Institute of Ichthyology; No. 37 , Paragaleus leucolomatus sp.n. is described from a pregnant female shark 957 mm total length collected off Kosi Bay, Natal, South Africa. This represents the first Paragaleus and the second hemigaleid species recorded from South African waters. P. leucolomatus differs from its congeners by its broad snout, long mouth, lower anterior teeth mostly erect-cusped and without distal cusplets, 180 total vertebrae, and coloration. The species has conspicuous white-edged fins, a black apical spot on its second dorsal, and dusky blotches on the underside of its snout. P. leucolomatus may be conspecific with a Madagascar Paragaleus erroneously assigned to the West African P. pectoralis. Diagnoses of the Family Hemigaleidae and the Genus Paragaleus are presented, as well as diagnostic keys to hemigaleids of the western Indian Ocean and to Paragaleus species.

- Description: The University of the Witwatersrand has a long established relationship with the mining industry. Indeed, its origins go back to the South African School of Mines established in Kimberley in 1896. (1). Since 1917, the Chamber of Mines has given direct grants to the University and its predecessors. In fact, the Chamber remains our largest private donor. Murray has shown in his authoritative study of the early years of the University that there have been occasions in our history when the Chamber has felt that it has not received a satisfactory return upon its massive investment in the University (2). On balance, however, the University can rightly claim to have served the Chamber well over the years. In recent years, the other side of the industry's history and social structure has been a focus of systematic investigation in this University. Here, van Onselen's Chibaro stands out : a pioneering attempt to create historically the social world of the compound in the early years of the mining industry in Southern Rhodesia. In our own Department, Moodie, Bozzoli, and Innes have all contributed to our knowledge of the social structure of mining.

- Description: In 1985, the Central Statistical Services and the Chamber of Mines ceased publishing a racial breakdown of mining industry employment. This marked the end of a statistical series that dated back for almost 100 years. Since 1985, there is no official series of racially segmented data for the mining industry, while the racial breakdown of employment in all other sectors of the economy was published up until 1992. From 1993, the Central Statistical Services introduced a new “Unspecified Race” category into its published employment data, making the identification of trends in employment and income by race less certain. The statistical information on racial issues in this submission must reflect these difficulties with the data. In respect of gold and coal mines that are members of the Chamber of Mines, the Chamber periodically has made available unpublished information on employment and total wages after 1985, grouped into “skilled employees” and “unskilled / semi-skilled employees.” Until about 1989, when legal barriers to the employment of blacks in skilled jobs were removed, the two Chamber categories reflect the old “White” and “Non-White” categories used by the Chamber before 1986. Since 1989, a small, but slowly increasing number, of skilled workers have been black, but this has not been taken into account in any of the statistics presented for the gold and the coal sectors. “Black” employment in the gold and coal mining industry thus refers to employees in Categories 1 to 8, the only groups for which the NUM currently bargains with Chamber member mines.

Determination of erythromycin in serum and urine by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection

- Description: A high-performance liquid chromatographic analysis of erythromycin in human serum and urine with UV detection at 200 nm is presented. The method involves a solid-phase extraction procedure followed by a simple phase separation step and chromatography on a reversed-phase column. The method has sensitivity limits of 0.25 and 1.0 g/mL in serum and urine, respectively, and is sufficiently sensitive to monitor concentrations of erythromycin in human serum and urine after the administration of a single 500-mg erythromycin stearate tablet.
