The researcher was therefore of the opinion that the aforementioned gaps needed to be addressed to ensure that students developed more confidence in their clinical decision making skills. The researcher was of the opinion that the nurse educators would be the ideal persons to identify the information required by undergraduate nursing students at the point of care for clinical decision-making, because they are the primary teachers of nursing students and are the experts with regard to the content needed for clinical decision making at the point of care in the clinical areas. The aim of the study was therefore to explore and describe the perceptions of nurse educators regarding the information required by the undergraduate nursing students for clinical decision making at the point of care. A qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual research design was used to conduct this research. The study was conducted among the nurse educators who are employed by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, lecturing and accompanying students for at least 12 months. In-depth interviewing was conducted to obtain the data. The data analysis was done using Tesch’s method to make sense out of the text and data. Strategies to ensure trustworthiness and a high ethical standard were implemented throughout the study. Three themes with eight sub-themes emerged, namely, the importance of students having sound basic knowledge of theory and practical skills before entering the practical field, students to have available, accessible and up to date information at the point of care and importance of mentorship when students are seeking information. Recommendations were made pertaining to areas of nursing practice, education and research.

The recreational value of the Baviaanskloof: a travel cost analysis using count data models

- Description: Despite constituting a sheer 2% of the world’s surface area, South Africa (SA) is the third most biologically diverse country in the world and this makes the country part of the 17 member countries that make up the ‘Megadiverse Countries’(Sandwith, 2002; Nel & Driver, 2012). Besides its exceptional levels of endemism, according to Boshoff, Cowling and Kerley (2000), three of the 25 internationally recognised biodiversity hotspots are found in SA namely the Cape Florist Region, the Succulent Karoo and the Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany centre of endemism. The Baviaanskloof is a very popular tourist destination, which falls within the Cape Floristic Region) ‘biodiversity hotspot’ in the Eastern Cape Province (Myers, 1988; Crane, 2007). Its high biodiversity, numerous archaeological sites, pristine environment, low crime rates, absence of malaria and easy of accessibility, makes it a perfect destination for recreationists (Clark, 1999; Boshoff et al., 2000). The Baviaanskloof was declared a ‘mega reserve’ under the Cape Action for People and Environment (CAPE) programme (CSIR, 2000). It consists of privately-owned farm land and a nature reserve called the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area (BWA). In order to properly manage, conserve and utilise the rich natural resources of the Baviaanskloof, its benefits need to be clearly documented and demonstrated. The aim of this study is to determine the recreational value of the Baviaanskloof, and this was achieved using non-market value technique, namely the travel cost method (TCM). The TCM is used to value recreational assets via the expenditures on traveling to the site by recognising that visitors to a recreation site pay an implicit price – the cost of travelling to it, including access fees and the opportunity costs of their time (Baker & Ruting, 2014). This method is mostly used to estimate use values for recreation activities and changes in these use values associated with changes in environmental quality/quantity. The greatest advantage of the TCM is that valuation estimates are derived from real economic choices made by individuals in real markets, whereas its inability to estimate non-market values is its major weakness which only limits its application to recreational studies. In estimating the recreational value of the Baviaanskloof, data from 328 respondents were used. Five econometric models, namely, a standard Poisson specification, a Poisson specification adjusted for truncation and endogenous stratification (TES Poisson), a standard negative vii binomial model (NB), a negative binomial model adjusted for truncation and endogenous stratification (NBTES), and a generalised negative binomial with endogenous stratification (GNBES) were used to estimate the recreational value of the Baviaanskloof. Crucially, all the five models simultaneously established income and total costs to be statistically significant in determining the number of trips to the recreational site according to a priori expectations. The GNBES model was observed to have the best fit of the data than the other four models after an examination of goodness-of-fit measures in conjunction with the number of statistically significant variables per model. Of the 328 respondents surveyed, on average, visitors to the Baviaanskloof are mostly male, highly educated individuals, receiving gross annual income of ZAR436 372 (USD30 451.64) and 39.87 years of age. The mean travel cost was estimated to be ZAR1 433.56 (USD100.04) and each travelling party consisted of 4.09 people on average. Using estimates from the preferred GNBES model, the study estimated consumer surplus per trip for a recreationist to the Baviaanskloof to be ZAR1 759.32 (USD122.78). When this value is multiplied by the average annual trips a person takes to site, a value of ZAR2 445.46 (USD170.66) for consumer surplus per person is produced. Further aggregation of this value across the population (i.e. 18 500), of recreationists to the Baviaanskloof per year gives total consumer surplus of ZAR3 157 210 (USD220 321). The study concludes that the Baviaanskloof has a significant recreational value which can further be increased if policymakers take actions to, inter alia, upgrade infrastructure, budget more money for conservation and market the nature reserve in unexploited markets. Since the non-use values were not taken into account and also the impact of on-site sampling on the data set, the recreational value of the Baviaanskloof should be carefully considered in any management or conservation project. More studies of this nature are greatly needed to allow for more comparisons and increase credibility of the results of environmental valuation studies in SA.

Improving employee engagement within a contemporary call centre in the Western Cape

- Description: Call centres can be regarded as one of the most stressful working environments, where a number of challenges are experienced, such as a high staff turnover and a high level of absenteeism. Call centres have evolved over the past decade and will continue to evolve as technology progresses. The call centre industry, has experienced approximately an eight percent growth from 2013 to 2014 in terms of job creation within the Western Cape. The number of jobs increased from 38 000 to 41 000 year on year with a R9 billion contribution being made to the provincial gross domestic product. In investigating the call centre industry in the Western Cape, a core problem was identified which revealed a number of questions. Call centre agents experience low levels of satisfaction, mainly as a result of the repetitiveness and monotonous nature of their work. This leads to the main research problem, namely that of improving employee engagement within a contemporary call centre in the Western Cape. In order to resolve this problem, employee engagement need to be defined as well as various levels of engagement needed to be investigated. Furthermore, an understanding of the key drivers of engagement as well as an understanding on how employee engagement can be improved, is needed. This study aims at providing call centre managers with insight into various engagement factors which could impact on: absenteeism, attrition rates and performance of call centre agents as well as customer experience. In order to address the problem and answer the various questions described above, the researcher conducted a literature review in order to create an understanding of the employee engagement concept as well as identify the various levels of employee engagement and the key drivers of engagement. Based on the literature review conducted, a hypothesis was developed on key drivers that impact the engagement of call centre agents. The key drivers in accordance with the hypothesised model are communication, team support, autonomy, management support, rewards and recognition as well as career development. A further literature review was conducted on how to improve employee engagement based on the key drivers identified. Based on the literature review done a questionnaire has been constructed in order to test the hypothesis. Electronic surveys based on the questionnaire constructed were sent out to a sample of call centre agents. All results from the survey were captured onto excel spreadsheets and various statistical calculations were conducted. The results from empirical study were analysed in conjunction with the literature in order to address the objective of the research. The biographical statistics showed a greater composition of female respondents in comparison to male. The predominant age group was found to be 26-35 years and the predominant period of service towards the organisation was more than 3 years. Descriptive statistics per variable revealed a number of high positive indicators such as regular communication and relationships with managers as well as a sense of belonging in a team. The descriptive statistics also revealed various areas of concern of which the highest frequency of negative responses related to employees feeling like a professional associate and not just a simple worker as well as growth opportunities. All drivers in accordance with the hypothesised model, were positively correlated to employee engagement. The empirical research was conducted on a call centre within the Western Cape and thus it can be concluded that an improvement in the drivers of engagement should lead to improved employee engagement within a contemporary call centre in the Western Cape.

This research investigates the factors influencing international students’ choice of enrolling at Higher Educational Institutions (HEI) via the internet: international students’ Internet use to facilitate information search and decision making. This survey of international students from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) explored the Internet’s role in marketing international education. Based on this exploratory research, NMMU educational institutions gain insights of online customer service for successfully recruiting students. The results show that prospective overseas students do indeed use the internet. Overall evaluation of the factors influencing the use of the internet for enrolling at HEIs was determined by four factors: namely, perceived usefulness, consumer involvement, perceived ease of use and opinion leadership.

- Description: The advent of globalisation and the re-admittance of South Africa into the international market place have presented both opportunities and threats to local fast food outlets and franchises. These food outlets are faced with foreign competition and the need to adapt their strategies in order to cope with the continued onslaught of these highly efficient, foreign, service orientated organisations if they intend to survive. This research explored the strategies these fast food outlets should utilise to deal with their competition and to facilitate their market growth and organisational development which could lead to them being successfully franchised at a later stage. The study revealed that if any significant growth and organisational development was to be expected, the fast food outlet had to concentrate on customer satisfaction and retention through the innovative use of the 7P’s of the marketing mix in its strategy formulation process. Attention also needed to be given to the competitive forces in the external environment so that competitive strategies were in line with market developments. The triangulation method was applied in this study. In terms of this method, qualitative and quantitative research techniques are combined in order to improve the reliability and validity of the research findings. This method proved to be an effective research tool as the findings in the quantitative research were verified by the findings in the qualitative research. Franchising in South Africa, especially the Eastern Cape, where unemployment is highest, is important as it has the potential for job creation and economic empowerment of the disadvantaged communities. It is therefore essential that every endeavour be made to ensure the success of the emerging entrepreneurs through assisting them to develop strategies that will ensure sustainable development and growth.

This method proved to be an effective research tool as the findings in the quantitative research were verified by the findings in the qualitative research. Franchising in South Africa, especially the Eastern Cape, where unemployment is highest, is important as it has the potential for job creation and economic empowerment of the disadvantaged communities. It is therefore essential that every endeavour be made to ensure the success of the emerging entrepreneurs through assisting them to develop strategies that will ensure sustainable development and growth.

Strategic change and its impact on the organisational structure of Pennypinchers (PTY) Ltd.: a case study

- Description: During the 1990’s many South African companies experienced the need to change and adapt. This was largely because of the environmental changes brought about by a new political regime. One of these changes was the exposure of South African companies to global competition. Because the South African business environment had remained relatively static during the 1980’s, many companies had no idea of how to manage change when it became necessary for economic survival. This inability led to the demise of many organisations. As change as a business concept covers a vast area, the main objective of this study was to isolate one area of change and examine it in a practical context. The chosen area was the relationship, if any, between strategy and organisational structure. The practical context chosen was an organisation, which had recently undergone strategic change. The research methodology for this study included the conducting of an intensive literature study, to determine the academic stance on the strategy/structure relationship. Various academic theories were examined to determine whether there was a relationship between the two concepts, and if so, what the relationship should be. This provided a background for the practical evaluation. Literary opinion showed consensus that there was indeed a relationship between the two; in fact the one was integral to the success of the other. That is, if an organisation chooses to consider adopting a change strategy, it should carefully consider its impact on organisational structure. To summarise, in a situation of change, structure should support strategy to ensure a successful transition. An empirical study was then conducted at Pennypinchers (Pty) Ltd , which had recently undertaken to implement a change strategy. The focus of the empirical study was the relationship between the chosen change strategy and organisational structure.
