- Description: Many organisations, especially public sector organisations, are required to ensure that they are able to continue with their operation in cases of major disasters that affect the organisations. In the same light, the South African Revenue Services (SARS), being a quasi-government organisation, faces a similar phenomenon. The main purpose of conducting this research was to explore a problem in depth that was identified at the SARS. SARS does not have a comprehensive business continuity plan. The study therefore examined possible techniques or actions for ensuring information and communication technology (ICT) readiness and business continuity, explored various frameworks and policy documents which will assist public entities with readiness for business continuity, and identified frameworks that will assist SARS in implementing an effective ICT readiness for business continuity. The study adopted the design science research approach and aspects of design science research in information systems. Data gathered through the questionnaire instrument was used to design a framework that can be adopted at SARS to enhance ICT readiness for business continuity. The research findings show the importance of effective business continuity management (BCM) and a framework that can be used to implement an effective BCM.

- Description: Informal retailing is a significant contributor to the South African economy in general and the retail sector specifically. It is a sector that is dominated by immigrant traders, while the numbers of local traders are shrinking by the day. The immigrant traders have outmaneuvered their local counterparts in this market through their ability to put together a compelling value proposition to the customers. Consequently, the focus of this research is to get a better understanding of the basis of their overall competitive advantage. Similar to previous research, this study concludes that the immigrant trader’s competitive advantage has competitive pricing as its foundation. However, this study had gone beyond the existing research which highlights competitive pricing as the reason for this success by suggesting that sound retailing principles which include good customer service, broader product range, hard work and lastly, a low cost business model are major contributors towards this success trend. All these elements combined together, put the immigrant traders in a strong position to dominate the market at the expense of the local traders. This study concludes by putting forward recommendations that can be implemented to support the local traders to compete effectively against their immigrant counterparts. The recommendations emphasis the importance of selecting and supporting traders who poses a good combination of all the qualities that are necessary for an entrepreneur to succeed, key among these being intrinsic motivation.

- Description: The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors contributing to scarcity of women principals in junior secondary schools of Mqanduli in Mthatha Education District in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. This region is predominantly rural. The study focused on Secondary school principals. The study used a quantitative research design to elicit data from the respondents. Data were collected from 72 participants through the use of a questionnaire. 70 questionnaires were returned and the data were processed. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used in the analysis of the data. This study had covered the aspects of culture which prevailed in the education set up in the past and are still prevailing. The findings of the study revealed several factors contributing to the scarcity of women principals in Mqanduli District. These were the findings: the majority of the participants agreed that culture is a stumbling block to the appointment of women principals. Cultural aspects still influence the public opinion on the capability of women to lead. Selection procedures that are discrimatory on gender grounds prevent women from being appointed as principals. Poor implementation of affirmative action policies during selection of principals leads to exclusion of women from holding principals posts. Lack of support from the subordinates prevents women from holding principal posts Although discrimination and prejudice with respect to women ability to lead and manage is worldwide it is evident that the bill of human rights is beginning to impact positively on the stereotypes. Finally, recommendations and suggestions were made stating that the Department of Education needs to provide the necessary workshops on gender equity policies to upgrade SGBs with skills, knowledge and proper understanding of such policies.
