The factors that influence knowledge management in an organisation

- Description: Through an effective system of knowledge management, organisations can evaluate which factors play in important role in ensuring that knowledge is managed well within the organisation. It is believed there are several factors influencing knowledge management effectiveness, including knowledge sharing, commitment and trust, culture, motivation and incentives, mentoring, group work, training, storytelling and networking, etcetera and also, there are various models, and analytical tools that can be used to study the relationships between some key influential factors and the effectiveness of knowledge management. Based on previous research, this study aims to identify and evaluate the key factors that influence the effectiveness of knowledge management in an organisation. Purpose: Knowledge in an organisation tends to be a resource that gets less attention and only after it has been lost or neglected, does management take a look. At this stage it is normally too late to do anything that can assist the organisation. Drawing on dilemma and previous studies done, the aim of this study is to understand and evaluate the factors that influence the effectiveness of knowledge management in an organisation. Methodology: Based on a literature review, a mixed research model is initiated integrating demographics, employee morale, organisational performance, information sharing, knowledge management strategy and a communication gap as some of the factors that have an influence on effectiveness of knowledge management. The mixed model is tested in the study using questionnaires, interviews, observations and focus group discussions. The study was done using a statistical sample of 25 participants who participated in all the forms of the study, meaning they all did the questionnaires, interviews, observation and focus groups. The analysis of the feedback resulted in both qualitative and quantitative data, hence the study had to settle for a mixed method approach. Findings: The findings point towards the general drivers and barriers to knowledge management within the organisation. The significant drivers are: mentoring, networking, training, group work storytelling. The significant identified influencers to xi knowledge management are: employee morale, information sharing, communication gap and employee tenure. Originality: The study contributes to an understanding of factors that influence the effectiveness of knowledge management in an organisation. An internal audit's perspective on the role of social and ethics committees

- Description: This thesis reveals the results of a study during which the 2014 integrated reports, sustainability reports and websites of the twelve JSE listed companies, were selected and evaluated. The aim of the thesis was to explore the responsibilities and duties of the S&E Committee; in the South African governance context as well as to assess the usefulness of disclosures made in the integrated reports regarding the social and ethics as part of corporate governance. Content analysis was used to identify the information and an interview was held with the expert in the field of social and ethics governance. Content analysis was used to identify the information and form themes and trends. A checklist was developed and used as an the evaluation tool based on the King III and Companies Act requirements on reporting of social and ethics governance. This checklist may be used as an effective tool by internal audit in carrying out an audit of the social and ethics governance. The results of the analysis were then presented to the expert in the field of social and ethics governance for comments. The results obtained indicate that most JSE listed companies conform to good corporate governance practices. However, there are areas where limited disclosure of information was found to be the case. These include the disclosure of information on sustainability, the information was not consistent and would be less helpful to stakeholders who want to analyse changes in the company‟s performance over time, especially relative to other companies. The information also did not meet the sustainability reporting criteria of sustainability context; the sustainability performance was not presented in the wider context, which limits the significant interpretative value. Future research, with the focus on sectorial disclosures, smaller companies as well as consideration of other sources of social and ethics governance information should be conducted.

An analysis of the use of visual storytelling by South African brands to promote brand engagement on social networks

- Description: Stories have the ability to evoke feelings and emotions in humans and have since been used by brands as part of corporate communication, communicating their vision and values. However, the growing technological trends have not only shifted the platforms for communication but also changed the techniques of communication as audiences on social media expect two-way communication instead of the traditionally used one-way communication. This is exacerbated by the power of word-of-mouth on social media as well as the presence of digital natives who are increasingly visual in their nderstanding and are immersed in their lives online. This has given rise to the use of visual storytelling as a corporate communication strategy as brands are using it to connect, transmit and receive messages from their audiences. This study examines the ways in which South African brands are making use of visual storytelling on social media and aims to determine the extent to which the use of visual storytelling promotes brand-audience engagement. The study is based on the philosophical assumptions of the Visual Rhetoric framework, which is concerned with the symbolic processes by which images perform communication. The hermeneutic – interpretive research method design is applied to justify knowledge produced by this study. A content analysis of six social media pages was conducted, looking at the visual content posted as well as interpretation of comments and interactions by fans of the selected brand pages. Overall, South African brands make use of visual storytelling to promote brand-audience engagement but they are not utilising the communication strategy to its fullest extent.
