Experiences of community service nurses regarding supervision and support from professional nurses in primary health care clinics in Nelson Mandela Bay

The research population comprised community service nurses who had completed their one-year community serviceduringthe2016-2017cycleinaprimary healthcarefacilityinNelsonMandelaBay.Purposivesamplingwasusedtoselectthe research sample. Data collection was done by conducting 10semi-structured interviews. Descriptive field notes supplemented the data. Tesch’smethod of qualitative data analysis was employed to analyse the data. Ethical considerations were applied throughout the study. Trustworthiness of the study was maintained by applyingGuba’s criteria of credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability. Two main themes emerged from the study. Theme1 focused on the participant's experiences regarding the diverse needs related to the community service placement at primary healthcare clinics. Theme2 related to the participants expressed experiences with regard to social interaction during community service at primary healthcare clinics. The findings of the study enabled recommendations to be made for nursing practice, education and research.

- Description: The South African horseracing industry dates back to the late 1700’s, and since then has given rise to the gambling industry within the country which has become a major form of entertainment to many. The horseracing industry in South Africa is run by various stakeholders that contribute to the three sectors of the industry - agriculture, sport and gambling. The industry contributes significantly to South Africa’s GDP in the form of gambling revenue, and has created employment for thousands of people. However, over the past decade there has been a decline in the revenue required to sustain the sport of horseracing. This revenue decline is evident in the reported annual figures of the horseracing operators Phumelela Gaming & Leisure Ltd and Gold Circle (Pty) Ltd. The study that follows investigates concepts of organisational culture, employee engagement and employee performance (dependent variable) as possible causes for the decline in the revenue for the horseracing operators by examining the effects of the independent variables, leadership, financial goals and objectives, policies and procedures, innovation and the nature of business of these concepts. This was achieved by collecting data from respondents from Phumelela Gaming & Leisure and Gold Circle, and analysing them in accordance with the literature on the above dependent and independent variables. The empirical results of the study indicate that the concepts mentioned above play a significant role in the problem/s faced by the horseracing operators, and that not enough is being done to address employee related issues. As the economic climate within the country struggles during Covid-19, it has become evident that the problems faced by Phumelela Gaming & Leisure and Gold Circle need to be addressed urgently to ensure survival and sustainability of their businesses, and the horseracing industry.

- Description: Supervision in social work is composed of educational, administrative and supportive functions. Supportive supervision is particularly important for child protection social workers, given their work with vulnerable children. Supportive supervision facilitates the child protection social worker’s reflection on practice issues with a designated supervisor who, through this process, addresses their personal and professional development as well as their emotional needs; this, in turn, contributes to sound ethical practice. The sparse literature available on the topic and practice observations pointing to the lack of supportive function in the area of Child Protection Services gave rise to this study. The purpose of this qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual study was thus toenhance an understanding of the experiences of social workers in Child Protection Services in respect of supportive function of supervision within the public sector in the Nelson Mandela Bay region. A non-probability purposive sampling strategy was used to identify social workers working in the field of child protection for an uninterrupted minimum period of three years. The final sample consisted of ten child protection social workers. Data was collected through semi-structured, in-depth, individual, face-to-face interviews, which were guided by an interview schedule. The data was analysed using Tesch’s (1990) model as outlined in Creswell (2014:198). The trustworthiness of the research process and the findings was enhanced by using a range of data verification techniques. The main themes that emerged from the process of data analysis are: 1) Social workers’ experiences of working in Child Protection Services; 2) Social workers’ perceptions and experiences of social work supervision in general and supportive supervision in particular; and 3) Social workers’ recommendations on how supportive supervision needs can be addressed. The findings of this study yielded valuable scholarly knowledge in respect of the supportive supervision function in Child Protection Services.

- Description: The world automotive industry has evolved through different manufacturing methodologies over many decades. It originated from craft production, but was transformed to mass production by Henry Ford in response to increased market demand. The methodology developed by Henry Ford made it possible to produce quality vehicles in large numbers and at affordable cost to the general public. However, it cannot deliver a great variety of products to the marketplace. Mass production was overtaken by a new automotive manufacturing methodology developed in Japan after World War II. The methodology, commonly referred to as lean production, yields consistently high quality products at even lower costs, whilst being able to deliver a variety of products to the consumer. The effectiveness of the lean production methodology hinges upon the strength and closeness of the relationships that exist between the assembler and its suppliers. Different models have been developed over time to describe the relationships between automotive assemblers and their suppliers. The lean supply model is generally accepted as an effective way of describing the relationships that exist between an automotive assembler and its first tier suppliers in a lean manufacturing environment. The research study aims at gaining an improved understanding of the relationships that exist between a selected Eastern Cape automotive assembler and its first tier suppliers. The effect of its supplier support practices towards lean manufacturing implementation amongst its first tier suppliers is evaluated. For the selected assembler it is found that the effect of its supplier support practices on lean manufacturing implementation amongst its first tier suppliers is limited by a non-uniform approach followed towards the supplier base. It is shown that opportunities for improvement exist for the selected assembler to develop closer relationships with its first tier suppliers to increase its global competitiveness.
