The perceptions of provincial EMS managers regarding the management of the millennial employees in the nelson Mandela Bay Health District

- Description: Literature on generational theory has paid much attention to the differences in values and work ethics between employees from different generational cohorts, but more specifically between managers and the Millennial Generation. These differences in values and ethics affect the way in which multigenerational employees perceive one another, which often leads to conflict and demotivation in the workplace. In an attempt to explore the perceptions of managers of the Emergency Medical Services regarding the management of the Millennial Generation, the researcher undertook a qualitative, descriptive, exploratory and contextual study. Data were gathered through 11 in-depth semi-structured interviews with managers of provincial Emergency Medical Services in the Nelson Mandela Bay Health District. Data were analysed by using Tesch’s steps in data analysis. During the data analysis, the following four main themes emerged: The employees from the Millennial Generation lacked the discipline required for working in emergency services. The employees from the Millennial Generation had up-to-date knowledge, but had little practical experience. Specific attributes of the Millennial Generation were identified. The managers indicated that the employees from the Millennial Generation were in need of management support. The researcher found that many of the participants’ perceptions were inaccurate and influenced by preconceived generational stereotypes and prejudices. The research ended with recommendations, which should assist managers to manage employees from the Millennial Generation in the Emergency Medical Services more effectively. Recommendations were also made for further research. It is acknowledged that the research study had limitations, which included the fact that the data were only collected from one of the eight districts in the Eastern Cape and that the study did not include the private ambulance services in the Nelson Mandela Bay Health District.

Anchovy and Sardine in Algoa Bay and their relationship with response variables in two threatened avian predators

- Description: Huge populations of sardine and anchovy exist in the four major upwelling systems around the world. These fish are both important ecologically and economically. Pelagic fish dominate the mid trophic level and can exert both a top-down control of zooplankton and a bottom-up control on predatory fish and marine top predators. They also make up a substantial contribution of the world catches in seas around the world where they co-exist in upwelling areas. The fluctuations of sardine and anchovy are largely influenced by recruitment from the larval stage and by the physical environmental forces that determine the planktonic compositions upon which they feed. In southern Africa, the biology and behaviour of two threatened seabird species, African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) and Cape gannets (Morus capensis), are directly influenced by the availability of sardine (Sardinops sagax) and anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus). This study aimed to provide further insight into the fluctuations of sardine and anchovy in relation to the variability of environmental factors such as wind, sea surface temperature, rainfall and plankton abundance, focusing specifically on Algoa Bay in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Algoa Bay is particularly important as it is home to the world’s largest African penguin colony and the world’s largest gannetry. Therefore, to further investigate the populations of these two seabird species, the fluctuations of their food source were studied.

Assessment of the implementation of workplace HIV/AIDS programmes in the public and private sectors of Mount Fletcher in the Eastern Cape Province, Republic of South Africa

- Description: Workplaces are required by law to provide HIV and AIDS workplace programmes to educate and prevent the spread of HIV, and stigmatisation and discrimination against workers infected or affected by HIV and AIDS. This study was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in the public and private sector at Mt Fletcher in the Eastern Cape Province. It aimed at assessing the availability and implementation of HIV and AIDS workplace programmes at Mt Fletcher. The study’s objectives were: to assess knowledge of HIV and AIDS among employees; to determine the availability of HIV and AIDS psychosocial programmes; to assess the employees’ knowledge on HIV and AIDS workplace guidelines that prevent stigma and discrimination. This was a quantitative study. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. A total of 81 respondents from both public and private sectors participated in the study. Stratified random sampling was used to select participating workplaces. Simple random sampling was used to select respondents. The findings indicated that both public and private sector workplaces have HIV and AIDS programmes. However, all private sector workplaces at Mt Fletcher had no onsite clinic as required, but use the local public HIV and AIDS clinics. However, 24% of public and 23% of private sector employees had no knowledge of the existence of the HIV and AIDS programmes at their workplaces. About 13% of public and 10% of private sector employees indicated that stigmatisation and discrimination against people living with HIV and AIDS was a problem in the workplace. They also indicated that they would not disclose their HIV status to their employers because they were afraid of losing their jobs. The lack of disclosure further disadvantages workers living with HIV as they do not get the support they deserve from their employers. Furthermore, lack of support, stigma and discrimination have an impact on the performance and productivity of the infected and affected employees and therefore affecting the expected output of their workplaces.
