Exploring the financial giving behaviours at a congregational church in Port Elizabeth: a qualitative study

- Description: The United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) was established in 1967 through the combination of Church bodies in the Congregational Union of Southern Africa (CUSA), The London Missionary Society (LMS) and Bantu Congregational Church of Southern Africa (BCCSA). The vision of the founders of the UCCSA (LMS) in 1799 was to establish the two Congregational Churches, complete the groundwork through erecting church buildings, provide training to Church Ministers and fund the churches until they became self-sustainable. Thereupon fruitful ways needed to be established to raise funds for the mission of the church. One of the primary methods of raising money was from financial giving of members. The Congregational Church that is the focus of this study forms part of the UCCSA, which includes the church bodies within Southern Africa. The financial statements of this church were scrutinised and it was found to be making losses in the prior 3 financial years (2015-2017). However, in the 2018 financial year the members’ contributions increased by 35 percent compared to the previous financial year. The study therefore explored the factors influencing financial giving behaviours among members at a Congregational Church in Port Elizabeth, taking into consideration a significant positive shift in financial giving in the 2018 financial year in comparison with the prior 3 financial years (2015-2017). Based on this exploration, recommendations will be developed that could assist in enhancing the financial position of the Congregational Church as well as its sustainability as a religious organisation in future. A qualitative, explorative and contextual design was used for the study. The causal model for financial giving described by Finke, Bahr and Scheitle (2006) was used as basis for a theoretical framework. Using purposive sampling, 12 church members that were aged between 18 and 60 years and had recently financially contributed through pledging (tithing), and other monetary donations as part of their church membership were chosen to participate in two focus group discussions, thereby ensuring the data collected was rich with context. The data was analysed by using ATLAS.ti software which has been proven to guarantee the reliability of results. To ensure a high standard of qualitative research, the study adhered to the main principles of trustworthiness by Lincoln and Guba, including dependability, transferability, confirmability and credibility of the research process. Ethical principles of beneficence and non-maleficence, informed consent, privacy, anonymity and confidentiality of data, as well as obtaining ethical clearance, were adhered to in the study. The study yielded data that gave rise to eleven main themes and five sub-themes with regard to the factors that influenced financial giving behaviours of church members. These included: blessings members received from God, church attendance, belonging to a church community and church size, church financial needs (sub-themes included leadership, transparency about the financial position of the church and historic influences), stewardship (sub-themes included non-financial giving behaviours and other financial giving responsibilities), church involvement, tithing, member’s budget, spirituality, and stages of life. Participants were in agreement that blessings from God, belonging to a church community, transparency about the financial position of the church, member’s budget, and spirituality positively influenced their financial giving behaviours in the church. Factors that negatively influenced their giving behaviours included church size, historic influences, non-financial giving behaviours and other financial giving responsibilities. Church involvement, the member’s budget, as well as stages of life both positively and negatively influenced their financial giving behaviours. Participants were not in agreement whether church attendance, leadership and tithing influenced their financial giving behaviours in the church. Finke et al. (2006)’s conceptual model could be used to explain the findings. However, additional factors were identified to be influencing financial giving behaviours among members at the church under study. Some of the main recommendations made, based on the objectives of the study, are: For the Church Council to remain transparent with communication to church members of the financial position of the church; To continue with the stewardship campaign on a yearly basis to encourage members to give financially and of their time and talents to the church; Communicate with members of the church regarding the financial position of the church if it again experiences financial difficulties.

The role of HRM in developing ethical organisations in the liquor industry

- Description: Research has shown that ethics is critical to an organisations success, and that the leaders of an organisation give authority to an ethical climate and power to any ethical HRM interventions that are implemented. This empirical study aimed to investigate the role of human resource management (HRM) in developing ethical organisations in the liquor industry. The study had three main objectives. Firstly, to investigate the awareness and importance of ethics in the liquor industry. Secondly to investigate which human resource interventions were being used in the liquor industry to promote ethics and lastly, to propose strategies to assist in establishing and reinforcing an ethical climate in organisations operating in the liquor industry. The research was gathered from the liquor industry quantitatively by adapting the ethics questionnaire developed by Lloyd and Mey (2010, p. 206). Non-probability sampling was used to include 92 sales managers from 13 different organisations located throughout South Africa. Data was analysed qualitatively by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Validity of the research was carefully managed and the reliability of the questionnaire analysed by a statistician. Ethical considerations, as well as the value of the study and its limitations will be included. The results showed that top management was seen as the most important role players in establishing an ethical organisation, and that the human resource department was regarded as most important. However, a significant lack of HRM intervention implementation was observed. Although organisations provided a significant number of interventions, they only had limited effect on the day to day operations. The lack of the creation and establishment of ethics committees and ethically based reward systems were found to be consistently lacking throughout the industry. An implication of this study is that there exists significant scope for the liquor industry to become leaders in the field of ethics. For this to happen top management should openly commit to ethics and ensure that the day to day operational policies and practices reflect the aims of an ethical climate.

- Description: There is an overwhelming body of literature that exist in the subject of employee engagement. More and more studies are still conducted in this phenomenon as it had proved to produce high returns for organisations when mastered.The universal definition of this concept has not been found, various scholars continue to provide different views on how it should be defined. These definitions however bear common themes such as energy, taking initiative, going an extra mile, being grossly involved in the task, organisational citizenship, involvement, satisfaction, connection and enthusiasm which are caused by a feeling of being taken care of by the employer. It is clear from these that there is a reciprocal relationship between employer and employee which is claimed to have a link to profits and staff retention; as a result employers are increasingly devising strategies to engage the employees in order to reap the said benefits. The purpose of this study is to facilitate employee engagement and staff retention a motor manufacturing company in the Eastern Cape. In order to archive that the study assessed the level of engagement of artisans by means of a questionnaire focusing on factors such as meaningful work, organisational culture, social relationships, rewards and recognition and career development as these are repeatedly identified in the literature as key drivers of employee engagement. An imperial study was done on these drivers as well as on the existing company engagement programs to identify the employee’s perception of their effectiveness. The result of the study proves that artisans of this company are engaged and that all the drivers above were confirmed to have influence employee engagement and staff retention. The study however the study found that there is a split on the effectiveness of the existing engagement programs in the company with only less than 50% saying they were effective. A strong relationship was found to exist between all the factors that were studied and employee engagement and staff retention.

The effect of in vitro digestion on selected biological activities of Hypoxis sobolifera corms

- Description: In South Africa part of the cultural and religious beliefs of the African people is the use of traditional remedies to treat diseases. These remedies are obtained from medicinal plants (Steenkamp, 2003). One of the most frequently traded plants in the Eastern Cape is Hypoxis, commonly known as Afrika patat, or African potato. South African traditional healers instruct patients to brew the fresh Hypoxis corm as a tea and then ingest it (Steenkamp, 2006a). This prompted an investigation into the digestive stability of a traditionally prepared Hypoxis extract. The H. sobolifera extracts were digested using a simulated gastric/small intestinal digestion and their biological activity determined. The hot water H. sobolifera extract before digestion only showed cytotoxic activity against cancer cell lines at very high concentrations which are not likely to be achieved under normal ingestion circumstances. In Chang liver cells on the other hand, chronic exposure to the hot water H. sobolifera extract increased glucose uptake in amounts similar to that of metformin. On the negative side, the glucose utilization stimulation was lost due to the simulated digestion process. The significant inhibition of AGEs by hot water H. sobolifera extract (IC50 of 6.3 Ig/ml) is a very encouraging result as treatment in the management of diabetes. This activity was only slightly reduced by the in vitro digestion process. Also observed was enzyme inhibition activity by traditionally prepared H. sobolifera, with ∝-amylase being inhibited (IC50 of approximately 250 Ig/ml) and therefore preventing or limiting starch breakdown. From the DPPH results it was clear that H. sobolifera, even when digested, is a potent anti-oxidant (IC50 of 134.4 Ig/ml when undigested compared to 162.9 when digested with β-glucosidase added to stomach digestive step). HPLC and TLC experiments revealed that rooperol which has previously been thought to be the compound responsible for the anti-oxidant activity in Hypoxis extracts, was absent from the traditional extract of H. sobolifera and therefore cannot be the sole compound exhibiting anti-oxidant activity; other compounds such as phenolics may be contributing. The phenolic and flavonoid content results revealed very highconcentrations of these compounds in the traditionally prepared H. sobolifera extract. These compounds may therefore play major roles in all of the biological activities observed from treatment with Hypoxis spp. The ROS results yielded interesting and promising results. Using standard or traditionally prepared H. sobolifera extracts, activation of differentiated U937 cells with PMA was greatly enhanced by cotreatment with the extracts, while extracts on their own did not cause significant activation. Future studies should investigate this property of the extracts as a promising immune boosterThe HPLC results showed that hypoxoside was undetectable in the hot water traditional extract and the TLC anti-oxidant experiment proved that rooperol is not present in the hot water traditional extract after treatment with β-glucosidase. This indicates that neither one of the Hypoxis compounds previously believed to be responsible for the biological activities observed are present in the extract when prepared the traditional way. Therefore, the biological activities observed in this study can be attributed to other phytochemical compounds.
