- Description: Parents in South Africa have been given the privilege and right to choose the language of learning and teaching (LoLT) for their children. However, because of the advantages associated with fluency in English, parents tend to choose English as the language of instruction, often without being informed as to the disadvantages of learning in an additional language. The use of an additional language as the main language of instruction can potentially negatively affect the academic performance of learners, as they are often unable to express themselves efficiently and comprehend instructions given in this additional language. In an effort to assist learners who may be struggling with learning in an additional language, this study explored the use of drawing to support the teaching and learning of an additional language in Foundation Phase classrooms. A qualitative approach was adopted in order to gain insights of Foundation Phase teachers regarding the use of drawing to promote the teaching and learning of English as an additional language. The methods that were used to elicit data in this study included focus groups, an open-ended questionnaire, field notes, reflective journal entries, and document analysis. The participants in this research were 18 Foundation Phase teachers from a school in the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth. The collected data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings of this study revealed that drawing is both an expressive and receptive visual language that has the potential to promote the teaching and learning of an additional language. However, for this additional language to be effective, teachers should create a stimulating environment and encourage learners to use this language in their classrooms. Teachers should also find creative ways to accommodate drawing within their planned teaching and learning activities in the classroom.

A psychobiographical study of Joseph Stalin

- Description: Joseph Stalin was the dictator of the Soviet Union from 1929 to 1953. Stalin ruled by terror and millions of people died during his term as leader. Stalin was known as an evil man, however, he was also hailed as a hero who was able to transform Russia into a major super power. Stalin died in 1953 at the age of 74, after suffering a massive stroke. The aim of the current study was to explore and describe the personality development of Stalin, by applying Alfred Adler’s theory of Individual Psychology and Theodore Millon’s Biopsychosocial Model of Personality to the context of his life experiences. The research design is a psychobiography, which is a single case study, and non-probability purposive sampling was used to select Stalin. The data consisted of primary and secondary data sources that described Stalin’s life experiences, and Yin’s (1994) guidelines for data collection were followed for data collection, which include using multiple sources of evidence, creating a case study database, and keeping and maintaining a reliable chain of evidence. The data was analysed in accordance to Miles and Huberman’s (1994a) model of data analysis. The findings of the study indicated that Stalin’s striving for significance was largely influenced by the social environment and cultural context in which he lived. These factors influenced his need for perfection and superiority, which became prevalent in his behaviour within his childhood years and throughout his quest for power in the Soviet Union. Stalin presented with Adler’s active-destructive lifestyle, which aligns with Millon’s antisocial personality pattern which focuses more on meeting the needs of the self at the expense of others.

- Description: The provision of basic water services to all South African communities is one of the biggest challenges that many local municipalities are currently facing. The objective of this study was to investigate factors affecting water provision in Eastern Cape municipalities, with specific focus on OR Tambo District Municipality. As a Water Service Authority it has the responsibility to ensure that all communities at the district have access to basic water supply. The study evaluated the participant’s views who are municipal officials responsible in water services delivery. The study shows that there is a serious challenge of backlogs in water delivery and these will be difficult to overcome due to financial limitation, lack of personnel capacity. It also revealed that some of the areas in the district are not serviced due to the aging of infrastructure, Data collection was done by using the interview methods which involved direct interactions with the participants from the Water and Sanitation department at the OR Tambo District Municipality who provided answers to the questions of the researcher. The study recommends that the municipality should prioritise looking at other integrated water cycle management strategies that will ease the delivery of water to the citizens. Awareness campaigns for efficient and effective use of water should be launched. Water supply and management must be one of the areas that the municipality prioritise in terms of budgeting on establishing programs to prevent water losses in the system. Maintenance and effective use of the already available resources must be effected at the municipality.
