  • Description: A diviner arrived in person but declined to sing with the women who were all sitting around on the floor of the hut, about 80 of them. The married women were more soberly dressed than the young unmarried ones and wore their headclothes in the more usual Xhosa 'pile' of cloth on the head, producing a large loose turban-like effect.   • Description: The song is in praise of a man who has many lovers. This song and the following one were sung by a group of very beautifully dressed young people, the men dancers elegantly blanketed and beaded, the girls wearing pale ochre skirts with many rows of indigo blue braid and their headcloths of indingo blie wool were folded about their heads to form a tall tubular headdress rather like that of Queen Nefertiti. Before the recording started, but whilst the singers were "warming up" there was rather a curious little ceremony which forms part of the dance. One of the girls went around removing the men dancers's headcloths revealing their head bead ornaments. She put their headcloths on her own head, then returned to the line of girls and gave each girl her own young mans' headcloth, which was then tied round the girl's head. A stick specially decorated for dancing is called "Libunguza." Intolombe dance for young people with clapping.

  • Description: The performers were all about 18 or thereabouts. This group wore red blankets with rows of white braid on the girls' skirts. The girls wore very attractive circlets of beads on the head, passing over the forehead and bead chin straps, also a head band passing over the top of the head and round the base of the skull. The sexes were divided dancing at right angles to each other and the girls kept up a shrill high descant. The men danced in a circle as tightly packed sardines. The main feature of the boys' costume were the immense number of strands of beads wound about the hips to a depth of 18 or more. The edges of the blankets were also beaded. The girls also wore three swathings of beads around the hips. 3 Gubura dances for young men.

  • Description: At the begining of the story, a hen which had been walking about between and over the closely packed women in the hut (who were all sitting on the ground) rushed out again, cackling. The story teller can be heard cracking her fingers, snapping them,clapping her hands and so on. Her gestures were very expressive. The story is about a wonderful child. The very day he was born, he said: "Give me my trousers, I'm off to the mines." On the way he met a white man who was looking for 40 boys. "All right, my boss, here I am." - So he was given 40 sickles and in a trice he had reaped all the corn and came back for more work. He did otehr wonderful things and his employer then began to realise he would have to pay him 40 salaries! So he employer laid various traps for him, like digging a hole for him to fall into so that he should be buried alive, but he evaded them all. And in the end he was paid in full. - "a lump sum" and went off home with just reward. A story.

They have been to school for a short while, wear European style clothes as far as possible and while falling short of the standards of the better educated consider themselves above and apart from the 'reds' who although 'un-schooled' are elegant in their traditional dress and beadwork.
