A reconceptualised perspective of the six-step financial planning process

- Description: The globally applied six-step financial planning process which is used by CFP® professionals to provide financial advice is designed to ensure that the financial advice is suitable, based on the needs of the consumer. However, given the diverse cultures in South Africa, this study argues that the six-step financial planning process (as it is currently applied) may not be suitable, as it requires contextualisation based on the unique needs of South African consumers. The various population groups in South Africa have their own sets of beliefs, values and cultural practices, and thus view aspects such as wealth (the creation, preservation and transference thereof), marriage, death and retirement, differently. Thus, financial planners who are not knowledgeable about different cultures, diverse financial needs, or the provisions of customary law, may not be able to provide suitable advice. The primary objective of the study is thus to reconceptualise the six-step financial planning process to be more inclusive, in order to better serve the financial planning needs of South African consumers. A comprehensive literature review was undertaken to provide the context and framework within which the reconceptualisation of the six-step financial planning process could be approached. An investigation of the financial planning environment and the financial planning process was completed to determine how the six-step financial planning process is currently applied in the South African context. Further, an investigation of culture and the cultural dimensions – power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism, masculinity, timeorientation and indulgence – was conducted, as it was clear that these cultural dimensions cannot be generalised to all South African consumers, due to the large degree of diversity within the population. It was also determined that there are various factors that contribute towards the cultural diversity of South African consumers, which may influence their financial needs and the type of financial advice that is required. These factors include race and ethnicity, marital regimes, procreation and family structures. To further illustrate the diversity of financial needs of South African consumers, a discussion of Black households and the application of financial planning legislation and customary law was provided. Black households are considered to be under-serviced, historically financially excluded, have low levels of financial literacy, and are mostly collectivist in nature. It is for these reasons that Black households are the focus of the study. Some of the financial needs that vi are common among Black households include land and property ownership, family wealth, family homesteads, lobola capital and ‘black tax’ expenditure. Given that the literature review established how the six-step financial planning process is currently applied, an interpretivist research philosophy was adopted in order to gain a deeper understanding of how the six-step financial planning process should be applied in a South African context. Further, the research approach in the context of this study is an inductive one, as the six-step financial planning process is an existing theory that was reconceptualised by considering the perceptions and experiences of 16 CFP® professionals and 14 Black South African households. A mono-method qualitative research methodology was used, with a single qualitative method of data collection (semi-structured interviews), and a single qualitative method of data analysis (latent content analysis). The findings of the study were used to provide a reconceptualised perspective of the six-step financial planning process which takes into consideration the fact that the image of a financial planner plays an important role when trying to establish a professional relationship with a client. The findings reveal that Black consumers in particular, generally have a negative image of a financial planner, which is influenced not only by their perceptions of a financial planner, but also by their self-perception of their own financial situation. The reconceptualised perspective of the six-step financial planning process also incorporates the finding that discussions around personal finances are considered impolite and taboo among the Black African community, which influences their ability to talk about these topics, trust a financial planner, and establish a professional relationship with them. The findings also reveal that a racial and gender bias exists among Black consumers – they prefer interacting with a White male financial planner, as they perceive them to be more competent and have more experience with finances and wealth accumulation. It was also found that CFP® professionals believe that having cultural awareness and cultural intelligence can reduce bias in the way that questions are asked, so as not to offend the client. Thus, cultural awareness was also incorporated into the reconceptualised perspective of the six-step financial planning process. It was also noted that it is important to ascertain clients’ level of financial literacy during the information gathering stage. Black consumers opined that in this regard, it is the role of the financial planner to both ascertain and ensure their clients’ financial literacy, and to offer financial education to ensure client understanding. vii Although the premise of the study is that South African consumers have unique financial needs due to the high degree of diversity among the population, it was the opinion of CFP® professionals that Black consumers, in particular, do not have unique financial needs – instead, they define their needs differently, have different exposures to financial resources to address their financial needs, and also prioritise and satisfy their needs differently. The prioritised financial needs of Black households (sub-themes) that emerged from both participant groups include the need to make provision for black tax, estate planning, funerals, and property ownership. Black household participants mentioned (to a greater extent than CFP® professionals did) the need to make provision for lobola and initiation schools, as these form part of several traditional ceremonies. The need to make provision for a family home was mentioned by Black household participants but not by CFP® professionals. It was discovered from Black household participants that stokvels are the most common micro-finance tool used by Black consumers, for various reasons. In fact for some, stokvels are preferred over formal financial products because they perceive that they yield a higher return, and others use them successfully to supplement their current provisions. These findings (among others) were incorporated into the reconceptualised perspective of the six-step financial planning process which is presented in this study. This study has made a contribution to the financial planning body of knowledge by presenting a reconceptualised perspective of the six-step financial planning process, and providing new knowledge on each of the associated six steps and their suitability in a South African context. This study also provides justification and evidence for the inclusion of aspects within the sixstep financial planning process that enhance the understanding of cultural diversity and needs of Black households in particular. Justification has also been provided for the inclusion of cultural aspects and diverse needs of Black consumers the in the academic curriculum of FPI and FSCA recognised qualifications, as well as the facilitation and learning outcomes of business and product-specific training that FSPs are required to provide to their representatives. The study findings also have implications for the development of the academic curriculum and assessment materials for CFP® professionals by recognised education providers, the FSCA regulatory examination, and the FPI professional competency examination. In addition, the study has provided evidence for the need to develop financial products, or customise existing financial products, that address the viii needs of Black households – especially culture-specific financial needs such as black tax, lobola and funding for initiation schools. Hence, farmers’ markets have recently been identified as potential visitor attractions that can provide sustainable development for communities. However, farmers’ markets and their clientele who attend have not received the necessary scholarly attention particularly within the Western Cape region of South Africa. To further understand what role farmers markets can play in the tourism economy; this study sought to examine the perceptions of visitors at the Outeniqua Farmers’ Market in George. The research objectives were: • To determine the demographic profile of visitors to the Outeniqua Farmers’ Market. • To ascertain the preferences of visitors with regard to the type of products offered at the Outeniqua Farmers’ Market. • To determine whether the Outeniqua Farmers’ Market serves as an attraction to visitors. • To analyse which factors motivate visitors to attend the Outeniqua Farmers’ Market. • To examine the visitors understanding of the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the Outeniqua Farmers’ Market. To accomplish the objectives of this study, previous research undertaken was consulted in order to better understand how farmers’ markets were performing around the world. In addition, to what methodological approaches would be most appropriate to utilise for such a study. The literature consulted revealed disparate differences in perceptions between farmers’ market visitors in Northern as opposed to Southern hemisphere countries. The effects of COVID 19 and the influence of visitor perceptions on travel behaviour were expounded on. Also, previous research revealed that a quantitative survey would be useful for the study as respondents would be accessible at the farmers’ market to solicit information since it was a confined area. v The findings revealed that visitors were mostly locals to the area, comprising primarily white middle-aged females who often attend with family groups. Furthermore, visitors thoroughly enjoyed the overall experience the market presented. Women at work: A Muslim perspective

- Description: Globally, women, including Muslim women face challenges advancing within their careers. This is supported by research focusing on the advancement of women. However, a paucity of research exists, focusing on the factors contributing to specifically the success and advancement of Muslim women. This study therefore explored the factors impacting on the experienced career success of women, particularly Muslim women and sought to identify additional barriers faced by Muslim women in the work context. In addition, the study identified interventions that can be used to enhance their success. For the purpose of this study, experienced career success referred to the subjective view of success individuals hold of themselves in relation to their careers. The target population of this study included women and men, irrespective of religious orientation or ethnic profile who reside and work in South Africa (n=243). A self-administered online survey was developed and distributed via an electronic link to individuals within a professional network as well as on various social media platforms. In addition, the study was subjected to various statistical analyses, including an Exploratory Factor Analysis, Reliability, Multiple Correlations, and Group Comparisons using ANOVAs, Tukey HSD, Independent Sample t-tests and Cohen’s d. Moreover, the qualitative analysis included ATLAS.ti, a manual search and the use of word clouds to extract themes that were highlighted or emphasised in the empirical study. The main findings of this study suggest that there are various factors impacting on the experienced career success of Muslim women. Positive significant relationships were found between Internal Factors and Success Indicators, indicating that the higher the level of motivation, the more successful are Muslim women. In addition, Organisational Factors and Success Indicators showed a positive relationship, implying that the importance placed on career-related interventions and commitment from top management influence the success of Muslim women. A significant relationship was found between Organisational Success Strategies and Success Indicators which means that the more aware and exposed Muslim women are to the identified career-related interventions, the greater their success. x No relationships were evident between gender and success, nor were differences found in the responses of men and women, contrary to the perception that the extent to which the factors apply to men and women are different. Furthermore, a model was developed based on the theoretical underpinnings and empirical evidence to assist in understanding the factors impacting on the experienced success of Muslim women. Additionally, strategies in the form of recommendations were advised with the aim of enhancing the experienced success of Muslim women. A critical analysis of a taxpayer’s rights relating to a request by sars for relevant material in respect of an audit

- Description: This treatise aimed to critically analyse a taxpayer’s rights relating to a request by SARS for relevant material, in respect of an audit (including information requested for the audit of prescribed tax periods). The study also considers whether such a request for relevant material infringes or threatens a taxpayer’s constitutional rights to privacy, information and just administrative action that is lawful, reasonable and procedurally fair. The research considered the information-gathering powers awarded to SARS in terms sections 3(2), 40 and 46 of the TAA versus a taxpayer’s rights to privacy, information and just administrative action in terms of the Constitution. The reasonable and justifiable limitation of taxpayers’ rights, in terms of the general limitation clause contained in section 36(1) of the Constitution, was also considered. The research method consisted of a literature review of various articles, journals, publications, books, statutes and related commentary, judicial decisions and comments of experts. The study revealed the following: • The definition of ‘relevant material’ allows SARS alone to subjectively determine what information is ‘foreseeably relevant’ for the ‘administration of a tax Act’, in respect of an audit. The threshold of what documentation is ‘foreseeably relevant’, is low, and the application of what is foreseeably relevant follows very broad grounds. • SARS’s discretion cannot be easily challenged as the provisions of section 46 of the TAA are peremptory and give rise to mandatory obligations, unless the taxpayer has ‘just cause’ for not providing the relevant material to SARS. • SARS must meet all the jurisdictional requirements of section 3(2) of the TAA to justify that the selection of a taxpayer for an audit or the request for relevant material is necessary for the purposes of the ‘administration of a tax Act’ and is not related to a ‘fishing expedition’ or some other ‘ulterior purpose’. • A taxpayer should evaluate the scope of the information requested to determine if it is ‘frivolous, over-zealous or patently irrelevant’ and falls outside the provisions of section 3(2). It is submitted that a taxpayer could resist such requests to information, to which SARS is not lawfully entitled, to ensure that its constitutional rights are not violated. • A taxpayer is not entitled to the information that SARS used to select it for an audit or SARS’s internal guidelines or policy manuals that are used by its assessors. The risk x indicators and red flags used by SARS to select a taxpayer for an audit constitute ‘SARS confidential information’ and a taxpayer does not have any legal right to specific reasons as to why his tax return has been selected for an audit. • SARS’s decision to request relevant material (or to conduct an audit) is a preliminary or initial step of a process and does not constitute ‘administrative action’ in terms of the PAJA, as it does not adversely affect a taxpayer’s rights nor have a direct external legal effect. A taxpayer therefore cannot rely on the PAJA to refuse such a request. • Even non-administrative action is subject to the broad constitutional ‘principle of legality’, which is an aspect of the rule of law implicit in the Constitution and provides a safety net when the PAJA does not apply. SARS must act within the scope of section 46 and the information requested must constitute ‘relevant material’ and must be ‘foreseeably relevant’ for the purposes of ‘administration of a tax Act’. - Description: The fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector contributes significantly to the gross domestic product (GDP) growth of the country. It is however regarded as one of the unpredictable sectors due to rapid technological advancements, new regulations, and intense competition. This has therefore led to the growth in importance of reverse logistics (RL) since the FMCG sector cannot avoid RL. This is because FMCG can be damaged in transit, recalled, returned due to unsatisfied customers, defects, or scrap material, amongst others. It is therefore important for the sector to implement RL practices and strategies that can lead to the firm’s competitiveness. This will further assist in recapturing the value of the products. Recently, RL has gained a lot of attention in both research and in practice. Nevertheless, not so much research has been done in the FMCG sector in SA. Through the implementation of RL practices, strategies and an effective RL management system, this sector will achieve many goals as well as lead to the firm’s competitiveness. The current study mainly sought to develop an RL competitiveness framework to help guide FMCG retailers. The study also investigated the RL practices, best practices, critical success factors (CSFs), strategies and their influence on the firm’s competitiveness. A positivist research philosophy, which combined descriptive and explanatory research was employed. Data was collected through two close-ended questionnaires, via SurveyMonkey, from 418 FMCG retailers and consumers. The descriptive results from the Statistical package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27 showed that FMCG retailers to a great extent implement the recalling of products. The results also revealed that FMCG retailers have centralised returns centres, and they share information and collaborate with suppliers for effective remanufacturing of products that have reached their end of shelf life, as highly implemented RL best practice, amongst others. Little understanding of the importance of RL, high costs associated with adopting RL practices, lack of top management support on RL initiatives, high cost of RL technology and customers’ unwillingness to pay extra for any RL practices and initiatives were identified as the key RL challenges faced by FMCG retailers. The descriptive results further cited financial resources, employment of skilled personnel to handle RL, having knowledge on RL and technology as the extremely critical factors in the successful v implementation of RL among FMCG retailers. The following RL strategies were identified as the highly implemented among FMCG retailers: integration of forward logistics (FL) and RL, the implementation of new technology, the adherence to environmental policies and regulations, knowledge management, eco-compatibility, and strategic alliances The structural equation modelling (SEM) analysis conducted using AMOS version 27, revealed that RL practices have a positive and significant influence on RL strategies. The results also revealed that RL strategies have a positive and significant influence on the firm’s competitiveness. The mediation results revealed that RL strategies fully mediate the relationship between the firm’s competitiveness and RL practices. Based on the empirical results and reviewed literature, a conceptual model and an RL competitiveness framework were developed and suggested. Moreover, the study recommended that the managers increase customer awareness of RL practices implemented by FMCG retail firms, train and educate their personnel on RL, enhance RL strategies to improve RL practices implementation success, and enforce RL formal policies. - Description: The South African Information Technology (IT) sector is experiencing a chronic skills shortage, and the skills gap is widening. South African organisations try to retain existing skilled IT professionals in order to compete on a global platform, whilst simultaneously competing against international organisations who poach IT professionals from South Africa in what is referred to as “brain drain”. The South African IT sector is an increasingly important contributor to South Africa’s GDP, with several international corporates investing and creating opportunities in South Arica, including IBM, Dell, Microsoft and Intel. The retention of skilled IT professionals in South Africa is complex and costly due to the high demand for these professionals. An overview of the literature was provided that commenced with a broad analysis of strategic talent management frameworks in order to present a holistic view of talent management. From this broad analysis, the literature review narrowed the focus to the retention of talent. This section focused on the impact of organisational culture and employee engagement, whilst considering the critical roles that managers and leaders play in culture and employee engagement pertinent to the South African IT sector. The research paradigm adopted for this research was interpretivist and the methodology was qualitative research. The empirical data was collected through conducting semi-structured interviews with six IT professionals with extensive experience in the sector, and who directly play a role in the management and retention of skilled IT professionals. Various themes were developed from the interviews, with a focus on the extent of the skills gap and considerations regarding organisational culture, employee engagement and expectations from leaders and managers detailed in the themes. Finally, a talent retention framework for the South African IT sector was developed from the emerging themes. - Description: This study investigated the impact in the telecommunication and broadband sectors on growth, employment creation, and poverty alleviation. It employs micro-simulation techniques and an economy-wide Leontief-based social accounting matric multiplier model to assess empirically the influence that fiscal injection into these sectors has in achieving South Africa's macroeconomic objectives. The study found positive but declining trends in output multipliers in the telecommunication sector over the past recession period (2009-18), signifying the enervation of the intersectoral multiplier effect over the post-recession period. Fiscal injection into the telecommunication and broadband sectors led to poverty reduction and to job creation in South Africa. However, the overall findings of this study highlight gender biases, spatial imbalances between urban and non-urban, an age gulf between young people and adults and further imbalance between formal and informal employment. - Description: Lack of community development which includes poverty, unemployment and inequality is still prevalent in South Africa, even after the country has gained its independency in April 1994. South Africa has the highest unemployment and poverty rate, especially in rural areas like Mount Ayliff. This high unemployment, inequality and poverty within the country is an indication that the government is not doing enough in terms of dealing with these triple challenges. The South African government has introduced numerous development and economic policies, programmes and strategies to address unemployment, poverty and enhance community development. These initiatives include Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP), Growth, Employment and Redistribution (GEAR), National Growth Plan (NGP), National Development Plan (NDP) and the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). The EPWP’s vision is to enhance community development in South African communities through temporary employment and skills development for unemployed youth. EPWP has been unemployment relief in many communities and has employed over five million people since its introduction. This study aims to investigate the role played by the EPWP to enhance community development and employment creation in Mount Ayliff Village. The study followed a qualitative descriptive approach, where secondary sources of data were reviewed to address the research objectives and questions. The main research findings are that the EPWP has played a significant role in enhancing community development in Mount Ayliff Village through provision of employment opportunities, development projects, introducing and empowering youth with skills and training for future permanent employment. - Description: The Quick-Service Restaurant (QSR) industry in South Africa is highly competitive with various local and international brands competing for market share. The importance of a differentiated customer experience is crucial to gain market share in such a competitive marketplace. The most important element of an excellent restaurant experience remains friendly and hospitable staff according to a customer experience survey conducted. It was established that customers’ attitude towards the brand is dependent on the level of engagement and commitment of the restaurant’s employees (Deloitte, 2017a, p.7). In the fight for market share most corporate budgets are focused on digital and customer investments, as is currently the trend globally. Unfortunately this results in inadequate investment in programmes that is focussed on employee engagement and commitment. Employee engagement is still considered a Human Resources (HR) issue by many corporates who fail to realise that employee engagement is a strategic imperative for workplace satisfaction and optimal profit realisation. The study has provided insights into the antecedents to employee engagement specific to the Quick-Service Restaurant (QSR) industry and highlighted the important role of leadership in inspiring employee engagement. The study answered the research questions by conducting a literature review and data analysis by means of descriptive and inferential statistics. It was confirmed that leadership empowering behaviours, organisational and team factors, being customer focussed and organisational interventions and activities have a significant influence on employee engagement. The study further provides a better understanding of the required leadership empowering behaviours that inspires employee engagement. This knowledge can be used to further develop leaders and managers in understanding their roles in creating an environment conducive to higher levels of employee engagement. After these Bills were issued, there has been a debate in the public, including legal and economic scholars about the potential impact that these policy proposals will have on investment, specifically the agricultural industry. This treatise investigates the potential impact of expropriation of land without compensation on farm investment and assess the legality of the policy. The supporting theoretical literature in this treatise is the property rights theory, efficiency theories and transactional costs theory. The study used various cases and interpretations of legislation across different jurisdictions, to assess the legality of this policy. To test the impact of expropriation of land on farm investment, the study uses a survey collected from 22 farmers, registered with the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) who responded to the request to participate. Once collected, the data were coded and analysed through the Stata statistical package. The results from descriptive statistics show that several independent variables that were included in the model had an influence on investment decisions. The study also found that the influence of title deeds differs between rural and semiurban dwellers. Semi-urban dwellers are likely to regard their property as insecure without title deeds, whereas rural dwellers indicated strong security of tenure despite staying on leased land. The study also found that the influence of collateral credit differs between small and commercial farmers. Some small farmers, who had collateral assets, did not use it when seeking credit or were denied even after using it. That is due to other factors such as cash flow and affordability. These factors, combined with the low value of collateral assets for small farmers prevent them from accessing additional credit. The results from the regression analysis revealed that certain independent variables have an influence on the dependent variable (farm investment). The regression vi | P a g e analysis results also prove that there is a significant positive correlation between the security of tenure and farm investment. However, the results from the respondents show that the proposed policy (expropriation of land without compensation) has not decreased their security of tenure as yet. The majority of respondents reported knowing about the policy, but still indicated that they intend to increase their farm investment in the coming three years. Therefore, there is no evidence that the proposed legislation had a negative impact on planned investment from a data analysis perspective. However, planned investments are decreased because of the current policy uncertainty. Those participants who indicated that they will decrease their investment, did so because they were not sure if their property will be targeted or not. This policy uncertainty is the source of disinvestment. Government should finalise this policy. It must be clear, indicate the circumstances under which someone’s property will be targeted. This is likely to put everyone at ease and be certain if their property will be expropriated or not. Government should be cautious of putting a policy that is not definite enough and leaves the final decisions to the court to determine the amount to be paid as compensation, as is currently the case. This court-determined compensation increases transactions costs and also creates uncertainty because one does not know how much are they entitled to until the final court determination. In such unpredictable times, innovation and technology adoption has emerged as one of the major trends and key solutions to lead the way for the future of logistics. This is also because a successful and efficient logistics strategy requires the use of technology, as well as the strategic value derived from a firm's capacity. This in turn enables firms to recognise possibilities and challenges resulting from technological advancement in order to attain long-term competitiveness. The industry is implementing these technologies with caution in order to provide faster, cheaper, more dependable and long-term supply. This study sought to investigate whether Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) is keeping up with the current logistics technology trends and systems that are transforming logistics firms in South Africa, the African continent and the rest of the world. To achieve this primary objective, the study also sought to achieve the following sub-objectives, namely: to identify the logistics technologies transforming logistics firms in NMB; to assess the role of logistics technologies affecting logistics firms in NMB. The study also sought to ascertain the challenges of using logistics technologies transforming the logistics firms in NMB; and examine the effect of logistics technology adoption and use on business performance of logistics firms in NMB. The study used an online closed-ended questionnaire distributed via google forms to collect primary data from a sample of 132 respondents across all the logistics firms (which consisted of warehousing, transport and packaging firms) in NMB. The study targeted those respondents involved in the management of the targeted logistics firms. The empirical results show that technology use in logistics firms has advanced a lot to vehicle tracking, packaging, inventory control, and communication systems, as well as robotics among logistics firms in NMB. The results also identified logistics technologies such as the Internet of Things, Robotic Process automation, Digital Supply Chain Twins, Vendor managed system and RFID as some of the major technologies currently transforming the logistics firms in NMB. The study found that many challenges exist with logistics technology adoption, and cited lack of investment towards logistics technology; the fear of iii losing jobs as people get replaced by technology such as machines and robots; high logistics costs as some of the major challenges. More so, the study results reveal that logistics technology adoption and use play a positive and significant role in logistics firms. The study further reports a significant and positive effect of logistics technology adoption and use on business performance of logistics firms. - Description: Owen Jones’ famous article “Why don’t we treat climate change with the same urgency as Coronavirus” puts forward an intriguing dimension to the climate change phenomenon. Despite the threat it presents to millions of people as well as the world economy, little has been done to prevent countries from being overwhelmed by its effects. Due to the fact that climate change is happening now, the purpose of this study provides insight into climate change and rural livelihoods in Insiza district, Matabeleland. In this study, an interpretivist paradigm was adopted as it gave the researcher adequate information that embodies an account of the participants’ understanding of livelihood assets. The qualitative research approach was adopted as it allowed the researcher to classify the findings into broad themes in order to tell a story. Farmers in Insiza district who depend on agriculture for subsistence were interviewed to provide insight into this phenomenon. The findings of the study revealed that climate stresses, non-climate stresses as well as institutional constraints together contribute to the vulnerability of farmers. Additionally, the findings unveiled that the inconsistent weather patterns as well as the recurrent droughts in the area have pushed most farmers to find alternative means of livelihood. Therefore, farmers over time have resorted to other self-taught means of making a living such as building, small scale mining, buying and selling of clothing items, running grocery stores, baking, owning backyard vegetable gardens, welding, fishing, selling firewood and growing chickens for sale. On the same note the findings showed that farmers in Insiza district employ different coping strategies in attempting to deal with climate change. The most common method in the area of study is conservation farming which has to do with digging pits to store water. More so, the findings displayed that NGOs have been of great assistance in equipping farmers at such a time as this. The study recommends that the government needs to ensure financial and institutional mechanisms to assist the Insiza community. Also, the NGOs must continue to support the communities through equipping them to diversify their portfolios and through developing tailor made capacity building programmes. - Description: An online servicescape serves as a moderator for excellence in Customer Relationship Management (CRM). The study approached the online servicescape from the perspective of the funeral industry. Nowhere is the relevance of an online servicescape more apparent than in an industry which is firstly, unsought, and secondly, perceived as dismal. During the process of arranging a funeral, the customer is experiencing an unusual purchase situation as it is a purchase that cannot be avoided. The possibility also exists that the customer most likely did not seek information about a funeral home prior to the demise of a loved one. A third contributing factor is the emotional state of the customer which will, in a time of bereavement, have a strong impact on the rational decision-making process. Considering these conditions, the study approached the online servicescape based on three elements, namely Search Engine Optimisation, perceived value, and perceived usefulness of the online servicescape. These elements contribute to trust in the funeral home’s online offerings, which could influence the purchase outcomes significantly. The aim of the study was to construct a functional servicescape for an unsought business such as a funeral home, hence contributing significantly to the CRM body of knowledge as it was determined that this has not been explored before from an academic perspective. A quantitative, exploratory methodology was implemented. The exploration is depended on Bitner's (1992a:60) seminal model of servicescapes, Harris and Goode's (2010:230-243) model for online servicescapes, and the key constructs of Simon's (1996:141-142) Design Theory to provide a methodological basis with which to construct the key elements for a funeral industry based online servicescape. The data collection process followed a twostep process. A content analysis was conducted on existing websites from five English speaking countries, followed by a survey that largely reflected the content analysis variables to gain customer insights. The data was analysed using a descriptive analysis process. v It was determined that customers would trust a functional servicescape, which will most probably lead to a purchase situation. However, customers also indicated the opposite if they detect anything on the website that might lead to distrust. This study examines the relationship between credit risk management policy, processes and procedures in practice and the TUHF Group and their impa ct on the performance of the loan book. In order that the research aim and objectives are fulfilled, and the research question answered, the study undertook an extensive review of existing literature on DFIs, the impact on economic development and growt h, the impact of badly performing loan books on the performance of companies and how this is impacted on by credit management structures, policies and procedures. An empirical study was conducted through the collection of primary data from the internal doc uments at TUHF Group and among some of the staff members at TUHF through a structured interviews based on open ended questions. The research revealed that there is indeed a link between the credit risk management processes and procedures at TUHF and the performance of the loan book, the findings indicated that the current policy and procedures is not sufficient for a well performing loan book and the pr imary data showed worsening performance of the loan book over time. Given the background highlighted above, which highlights the importance of an effective Human resource department and the role it ought to play in the organisation’s success, growth, and sustainability, it was therefore sought by the researcher to delve into the effectiveness of the Human resources department at the Port of Port Elizabeth, as they have continually been receiving mediocre performance ratings from the organisation’s leaders. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore and investigate, from the Human Resource personnel in this department, their opinions of the effectiveness of the service offerings of the Human Resource department of the Port of PE to service the needs of their customers. This led to the development of a qualitative research approach where semi-structured interviews, supported with questionnaires, were conducted on all the personnel of the Human Resource department. The questionnaire contained closed and open-ended statements of opinions held by the respondents, which consisted of the Human resource personnel of the Port of Port Elizabeth. The study findings indicate that the Human Resource Department of the Port of PE is functioning at a mediocre level of service provision and that it is not a high-performing team or highly effective. The impact of mediocre service delivery means that the iii department is not fully meeting the client’s mandate that drives the People agenda of the organisation. There were a few factors identified in the study that prevented the team from reaching levels of high performance, and some can be attributed to organisational, systemic, and policy challenges preventing the team from reaching the required levels of service. A new Operating model has been presented in this study to address these challenges faced by the department. - Description: The purpose of this study was to establish what projects have been implemented in Zwide Township in Gqeberha to alleviate poverty. Criteria for a successful poverty alleviation project were identified guided by the factors that determine poverty and the sustainability of the development and training projects in place to alleviate poverty. This study assessed existing projects to ascertain where they were successful and where they could improve. The study revealed that several projects and programmes have been planned in Gqeberha, specifically for Zwide Township, to alleviate poverty but according to Nelson Mandela Bay’s IDP (2017:04), several projects have been placed on hold due to a lack of funds. This was a qualitative study that employed documentary analysis to gather relevant data. - Description: South Africa is confronted with a skewed economy along racial lines through a history of colonialism and apartheid. The laws of government have tried to include companies in advancing social cohesion and in dealing with issues of the historical exclusion of African communities from the mainstream economy. With the advent of democracy, the government has been faced with the mammoth task of driving transformation and inclusion in various sectors of the economy. Various pieces of legislation have been promulgated to give effect to this ideal. The Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) Act with its associated regulations has Enterprise and Supplier development (ESD) as one of the five pillars underpinning the targeted areas for transformation in companies. Enterprise development is a key contributor to companies achieving a good score card rating as determined by the government of South Africa for various industries. This scoring also has advantages in terms of accessing government incentives as well as procurement opportunities for businesses with government. Companies therefore deploy capital for the development of businesses within their supply chains and also any other businesses whether or not they do business with them. This process of enterprise development funding is largely undefined and sees companies use various methods and criteria to deploy the capital with a myriad of outcomes all of which vary depending on the area of interest. The primary intent of the enterprise development funds is to create patient, free and sometimes affordable capital for the growth and sustainability of previously disadvantaged businesses in the South African context. Industries like manufacturing, in their nature are capital intensive and require huge capital outlays which then become a barrier to entry particularly for previously disadvantaged groupings like black people. The aim of the study is to identify key determinants that can unlock the growth and sustainability of black owned SMMEs in the manufacturing sector and also to understand the environment in which they operate. - Description: The increasing financial liberalisation since the collapse of the Bretton Woods regime in the 1970s has made exchange rates in both developing and industrialised countries unpredictable. As a result, both researchers and policymakers have become increasingly interested in the consequences and causes of exchange rate volatility. Fluctuations in foreign exchange rates may be a significant source of concern for banking institutions. In the worst case, significant losses in foreign exchange could result in financial crises, apart from causing significant constraints on the revenue growth of banks. This research study sought to investigate the volatility of exchange rates in South Africa and how this volatility affects commercial banks’ performance. The study was guided by both theoretical and empirical literature to achieve its main objective. This investigation is rooted in two theories: The Purchasing Power Parity theory, and the International Fishers Effect theory. The purchasing power parity (PPP) theory expresses that, homogeneous goods, in various countries, cost equally in similar countries when estimated in terms of the same currency (Brunnermeier and Pedersen, 2009). The theory postulates that if two homogeneous goods are traded at various costs in various countries, the arbitrage opportunity would be exploited, which prompts convergence of the deviations from Purchasing Power Parity towards equilibrium without arbitrage costs. The International Fisher Effect stipulates that the distinction in returns between two countries is simply equivalent to the distinction in inflation rates (Ross, Westerfield, Jaffe, & Jordan, 2008). The theory proposes that foreign currencies with relatively high-interest rates would depreciate on grounds that the high nominal interest rates reflect anticipated inflation. The nominal interest rates would likewise fuse the risk of an investment (Majok, 2015). The research adopts two econometric models namely: The EGARCH technique in modelling volatility, and the NARDL method to investigate the relationship. Results from the NARDL model reveal the occurrence of a long-run relationship between exchange rate volatility and bank performance. However, the influence of exchange rate on bank performance varies, depending on the type of proxy employed to measure bank performance. Four commercial banks revealed evidence of cointegration among the variables in the model in the short run, and indicated the v | P a g e speed of adjustment in the short run towards the long run. Nedbank’s return on equity, however, has an insignificant short-run relationship. Previous research suggests that factors such as strategy formulation, strategy control and follow-up, leadership and suitability motivation, management and employees and corporate governance leading the change influence strategy implementation to various degrees. These factors are said to influence strategy implementation positively. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationships between the above-mentioned independent variables against a dependent variable, namely, strategy implementation. In the literature review, various topics such as leadership, strategy formulation and motivation, were discussed. Descriptive statistics were derived with regard to the prevailing levels of the various independent variables within the Coega Development Corporation. The sample of this study consisted of 50 employees at different levels within the Coega Development Corporation in the Eastern Cape. The regression analysis of this study showed that all factors were statically significant except leadership and suitability motivation, management, and employees. This factor was found to be statistically insignificant as the p value was greater than 0.05 (p= 0.169289). Furthermore, the statistical data analysis indicated that strategy implementation within the Coega Development Corporations is influenced positively by factors such as strategy formulation, strategy control and follow-up and corporate governance leading the change.
