The trough zithers are like long bowls of wood with the strings stretched along over the hollow of the highest note downwards, the friction of the string caught in slits at either end of the trough is enough to retain the tuning for quite a while before returning is necessary. - Description: The raft zither is made out of eight palm midribs joined together. The string is continous being tuned from the high note downwards by straining the first then making up the slack in the second and so on. The tuning therefore is apt to be uncertain but conforms to the general mode. The music of the Pango is accompanied by dancing by three men, one having small bell rattles (Nzisi). When the player makes a pizzicato all the dancers bend down and make a 'ha-aa' sound in rhythm. The raft zither is about 22 inches long between the bridges. A cheerful song sung at the wedding by young men, on the same principa as the best man's kissing the bride. "Divorce your husband, I want to marry you." Tuning:- 352, 332, 296, 252, 212, 166, 198. This tuning is unusal in that the 7th note is higher than the 6th instead of being the lowest on the zither. One Kinanda dance for men and women, with Pango 7 string Raft Zither and Ngisi bells.

- Description: The 'struck iron' was an old starter ring from the fly wheel of a car. It is necessary to have a circular or 'S' shaped piece of metal for convnient playing of the double beat. The performer called it 'Kengere' or 'Beru' bell. The sweepers in Nairobi, they say, always come from Embu. Kibunga Waita, the iron player, was no exception. Eleswhere in Africa certain tribes tend to adopt one occupation exclusively. After hearing a few Kikuyu songs to the accompaniment of the iron and accordion, the listener who is not case hardened to the pulse may experience a singing in the ears for several hours afterwards. The eight horn blowers stand in a row with the women opposite them while the dancers strut in between. The Engwara horns are built up of sections of gourds bound together with plantain string and re-inforced longitudinally by lathes of bamboo. The are side blown and have a hole at the small end so as to produce two notes each. They vary in size from about 12 inches to approximately 36 inches.
