Developing a model for promoting physical fitness and healthy lifestyle of primary school learners in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

- Description: The challenge of low level participation in physical activity and, consequently, limited physical fitness has been acknowledged as being a national public health concern in South African schools. The main aim of this study was to develop a behavioural model for promoting physical fitness and healthy lifestyle of primary school learners in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. The first thing was to determine their physical fitness level and body composition then develop a behavioural model based on the findings. The study was conducted in three phases. A quantitative, qualitative and theory-generating research design was conducted using questionnaires, deductive and inductive strategies and literature triangulation. The study involved primary school learners: 356 boys and 520 girls aged 9-14 years old, who were randomly selected. Anthropometric assessments were conducted using ISAK (Marfell-Jones et al., 2006) and EUROFIT (1988) test batteries.The following measurements of body mass, stature, skinfolds (triceps and subscapular), waist circumference and gluteal were taken. The percent BF was calculated from a sum of two skinfolds (triceps and subscapular), using Slaughter et al.‘ s (1988) equation to predict body fat. Physical fitness measurements included sit and reach, push-ups, sit-ups and a 20 metre shuttle run. Physical activity level and sedentary behaviour were assessed by means of self-report questionnaires. Demographic, psychological and environmental variables were also measured by a self-report questionnaire. Six focus group discussions were conducted with school learners. The physical fitness levels were categorized as hypoactive, minimal active and inactive. Sedentary behaviours were categorized by number of minutes spent on sedentary activities. Dietary intake was assessed by a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Food intake was classified as healthy, unhealthy/junk and traditional food. Body composition was measured by calculating body mass index (BMI) (weight/height2) and waist-to-hip ratio, respectively. Categories: underweight: 0<18, normal weight: 18, 5<25, overweight: 25<30 or obese: 30 and blood pressure measurements were classified as healthy and unhealthy. The main findings were as follows: underweight 60, 25 percent: normal weight 30, 54 percent: overweight 4, 18 percent: and obese 5, 02 percent: for the peri-urban school learners. Underweight 64, 78 percent: normal 31, 52 percent: overweight 2,83 percent: and obesity 0,87 percent:for the rural school learners. 56,25 percent underweight: 36,93 percent normal weight: 5,68 percent overweight: and 1,14 percent obese for the urban school learners. The mean body mass of learners from three locations were urban 40.0±10.185; peri-urban 39.8±10.181 and rural 38.7±10.279, respectively. (Chi-square = 3.3107; P=0.191). The mean values stature of all the three residences are urban; 144.1 ±10.400 peri-urban 144.4±9.187 and rural 143.7±12.617 (Chi-square = 1.2651; P=0.5312). The mean waist circumference for urban was (78.4±9.493), peri-urban (78.4±9.399) and rural was (77.1±10.214), respectively (Z=2.474;p=0.2903). The triceps value (z=21.4565p <.0001). Urban (13.9±5.589), (12.5±6.023) for peri-urban and (12.1±6.390) for rural. Subscapular (z=4.1151;p=0.1278). Urban area had (9.3±5.426), (9.3±5.463) for peri-urban and (8.9±6.381) for rural. The mean systolic blood pressure of urban school learners was (109.2±19.512), (107.9±19.273) for peri-urban and (107.4±19.488) for rural school learners. Lumbar and hamstring flexibility (z= 57.733; p<.0001). (25.3±5.507) for urban, (23.0±6.435) for peri-urban and (26.9±6.854) for rural. Sit-up (z=9.8414;p=0.0073). (18.3±12.571) for urban, (19.7±12.323) for peri-urban and (21.7±13.782) for rural area. Push-ups (z= 37.7591p=<.00001). (15.8±10.285) for urban, (18.5±11.086) for peri-urban and (20.9±9.981) for rural area. Maximal oxygen intake (z= 163.186p=<.0001). With regard to health-related physical fitness, the learners in the rural and peri-urban better than those in urban areas. PA attitude (z=7.5507;p=0.0563), (2.5±0.792) for urban area, (2.6±0.802) for peri-urban and (2.7±0.890) for rural area. Parental role modelling in PA (z=0.3083; p=<.000). (3.1±1.008) for urban area, (3.3±0.916) for peri-urban (3.1±0.981) for rural area. Peer encouragement (z=2.5367; p=0.2813) (3.4±0.893) for urban, (3.3±1.064) for peri-urban, (3.3±1.005) for rural area. Parental encouragement (z= 7.2266p=0.027),(3.7±0.985) for urban area, (3.5±0.906) for peri-urban and (3.7±0.774 ) for rural area. Teacher encouragement (z=2.0069p=0.3668).The mean values for three residences are (3.5±0.802) for urban area, (3.4±0.784) for peri-urban, (3.5±0.733) for rural areas. Most of the school learners in all the three residences prefer unhealthy/junky food. Based on the results, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted on data to identify and analyse the factors for model development. The findings indicated that there is evidence of low level of physical fitness and high prevalence of excessive weight and obesity among primary school learners, the study, therefore, suggests the development of the behavioural model to enhance physical fitness and prevent or reduce overweight/obesity among school learners.

- Description: An expanding body of sport psychology theory and research has highlighted the central role of the coach-athlete relationship (CAR) in the performance, satisfaction and well-being of coaches as well as athletes. Models have been developed that identify the key dimensions of CAR quality and the interpersonal behaviour that maintains it, but there remains a need for interventions that support coaches and athletes to optimise their interpersonal skills. This can be done by harnessing recent advances in personality theory which emphasise a more holistic and developmental view of the person and provide a basis for greater mutual understanding and adaptive interpersonal behaviour change in the CAR. The aims of this study were to develop the Coach-Athlete Relationship Enhancement (CARE) intervention through an integration of the Enneagram personality typology with current models of the CAR, and then to evaluate the impact of the CARE intervention on CAR quality. Sixty-two university-level athletes and their nine coaches participated in the study. Quantitative and qualitative results indicate that the CARE intervention significantly enhanced CAR quality, including direct and meta-perceptions of closeness, commitment and complementarity, as well as co-orientation. Intervention outcomes included enhanced mutual understanding in the CAR, enhanced self-awareness, enhanced team relationships, and adaptive interpersonal behaviour change. These outcomes were associated with a shared awareness between coaches and athletes of their Enneagram personality type traits and motivations. Coach-athlete relationship quality was further enhanced by re-constructing coaches’ and athletes’ personal narratives based on self-descriptions of Enneagram type strengths, and a redefinition of individuals’ core motivations to incorporate adaptive interpersonal behaviour change.

- Description: The growing complexity of healthcare demands greater patient involvement and skills to navigate this complex system. It has therefore become increasingly important to identify individuals with inadequate health literacy, by using efficient, short and reliable measures for doing so. Most research on the development and validation of health literacy tests has been conducted in high-income countries, with very little reported from low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Existing health literacy measures have come under scrutiny for their lack of cultural sensitivity, bias towards certain population groups and failure to acknowledge health literacy as a multidimensional concept. These measures usually have limited application in LMICs due to the significantly different structuring of healthcare systems, they overlook the extreme discrepancies in educational levels, and rely too heavily on the ability to read health information. No health literacy data for South Africa are available, and only a few health literacy-based research papers have been published in this country. The aim of the study was to develop and validate a health literacy measure that is contextually and culturally appropriate to measure health literacy in limited literacy public sector patients in South Africa. An Item Bank of 30 questions was developed with the input of a diverse expert consultant panel, and included skills-based and self-reported questions which ensured cultural, contextual and educational level appropriateness. The Information and Support for Health Actions Questionnaire (ISHA-Q) is a health literacy measure developed to assess health literacy for LMICs which includes 14 core scales. These were useful in ensuring coverage of a range of health literacy constructs within the Item Bank. The 30 questions were then allocated to one of three health literacy domains: Procedural knowledge, Factual knowledge and Access to healthcare, health services and social support. Ethical approval for the study was obtained. The questions were translated into isiXhosa and underwent pilot testing. Following pilot testing, 120 isiXhosa first-language speakers, at least 18 years old, who attended public sector facilities and had a maximum 12 years of education were recruited from a primary healthcare clinic in Grahamstown. An interpreter was trained and he participated in all interviews. A questionnaire was used to collect data on the 30-question Item Bank. The Multidimensional Screener of Functional Health Literacy (MSFHL) was used as the primary comparator.The second phase of the study involved the refinement of the 30 questions in the Item Bank, which involved a multi-stage process. Data were analysed statistically using t-test, correlations, chi-square and ANOVA tests at a 5% level of significance, in order to identify problematic questions. Item Response Theory was used to ascertain difficulty and discriminatory ability of the questions. Each question was further subjected to in-depth interrogation by a panel of healthcare professionals to ensure that questions were supported by the conceptual framework and the definitions of health literacy adopted for this study. The number of questions was reduced from 30 to 12, and formed the new Health Literacy Test - Limited Literacy (HELT-LL). To validate the HELT-LL, 210 patients with the same inclusion criteria as previously noted, were recruited from four primary healthcare clinics in the Eastern Cape Province. Individual interviews were conducted with the assistance of the interpreter to collect sociodemographic data as well as data from the HELT-LL, the primary comparator (MSFHL), and a secondary comparator which was a South African modified version of the Newest Vital Sign (NVS-SA). The HELT-LL was re-administered to 40 patients in a follow-up interview two weeks later. The HELT-LL categorised only 17.6% of the patients as having adequate health literacy, just over a third with inadequate health literacy, and the majority with marginal health literacy. Questions in the cognitively demanding Procedural knowledge domain were the most poorly answered, with a mean score of 48.6±24.9%. Patients had great difficulty performing the basic numeric tasks in this domain. The overall mean score for the HELT-LL was 52.8±18.4%, compared with the more cognitively demanding NVS-SA with a mean of 28.6±21.1%, and clearly illustrated the impact of the strategy to include in the HELT-LL a variety of questions with differing cognitive load. The MSFHL, which is based on demographic characteristics and perceived difficulties with reading and writing, had an overall mean score of 44.4±26.2%. Demographic characteristics including age, education and English literacy, were found to be good predictors of limited health literacy, with significant correlations being found between these variables and the mean HELT-LL score. An acceptable value for Cronbach’s alpha, excellent test-retest reliability and excellent concurrent validity show that the HELT-LL is a valid and reliable measure of health literacy in our target population. As there is a paucity of health literacy research emanating from developing countries, this study presents a significant contribution to literature. It is the first study to report the development and validation of a health literacy measure to address the dearth of available health literacy measures applicable for South Africa. If implemented for use in clinical settings and for research purposes, it could provide valuable South African health literacy data which could inform the development of interventions focusing on improving health literacy and health outcomes.

This study generated new theory, in the form of substantive and procedural claims (design principles) regarding experiential learning programmes and preceptor and student motivation in a South African pharmacy educational context, which can be added to the existing international landscape and more importantly, plant the foundational seeds of insight that can be utilised as guiding tools by other South African pharmacy faculties.

PHC professional nurses are first contact to patients and the community as well as key stakeholders in the management and education of obese patients. However, anecdotal evidence seems to question their suitability as good models of the advocated healthy lifestyle behaviours and weight management, as overweight and obesity is also prevalent among the professional nurses. This study examines the prevalence and determinants of overweight and obesity among PHC professional nurses in the Eastern Cape (EC) Province of South Africa. This was a workplace, cross-sectional study involving 203 PHC professional nurses conveniently selected across 41 PHC facilities in EC, South Africa. A WHO STEP wise questionnaire was used to collect demographic and behavioural data. Anthropometric (weight, height and waist circumference [WC]) measurements were taken following a standard protocol. Overweight and obesity was defined as a BMI of 25-29.9kgm-2, and BMI ≥ 30kgm-2, respectively. Seventy six percent of the nurses were obese. An additional 18 percent were overweight. Age, gender, marital status, duration of practice, alcohol use and smoking were significantly associated with obesity. There was no association between physical activity and obesity. After adjusting for confounders, only age more than 30 years (OR=5.2, 95 percentCI=1.6-16.4) and not using alcohol (OR= 4.0 95 percentCI= 1.7-9.1) were significant and independent predictors of obesity among the nurses. In conclusion is an alarmingly high prevalence of obesity among primary healthcare professional nurses in Eastern Cape, South Africa. This shows that PHC professional nurses in EC are not good models of the healthy behaviours, judge be BMI indicator, if they do advocates for healthy weight management to patients. This constitutes a future risk for an increased prevalence of chronic diseases and a handicapped healthcare workforce. There is a need to implement measures to promote healthy lifestyle behaviour and weight management among professional nurses in this setting.

- Description: In this study, a facile synthesis method was developed to produce layered-layered cathode materials with the formula xLi2MnO3•(1-x)LiMO2 (M= Ni and Mn) referred to as lithium-manganese-rich materials for lithium ion batteries. The prepared materials displayed high capacity ≥200 mAh/g at a current density of 20 mA/g in the voltage range of 2.0 V to 4.8 V. In particular the cathode material prepared at pH 10.0 delivered a high initial discharge capacity of 266 mAh/g at 20 mA/g current density and maintained a discharge capacity ≥220 mAh/g at 50 mA/g after 50 cycles. The synthesis method was used to further investigate the effect of lithium ratio in the layered-layered material. Li1+xMn0.6Ni0.2O2, x= 0.2, 0.25, 0.3 and 0.4 cathode materials were produced respectively. The BET surface area analysis results showed that Li1.3Mn0.6Ni0.2O2 material had comparatively higher surface area to the other cathode materials and also delivered good electrochemical results. XPS showed that the cation distribution is affected by the increase in lithium ratio, the Mn4+ percentages decreased significantly with an increase in lithium ratio. All materials peaks deconvoluted into two peaks namely Mn4+ and Mn3+, Li1.3Mn0.6Ni0.2O2 had the highest percentages of the stable Mn4+ 70.8%. Further investigation focused on the effect of the sintering temperature on the structure and the electrochemical performance of Li1+xMn0.6Ni0.2O2, x= 0.25, 0.3 and 0.4 cathode materials. X-ray diffraction showed the same patterns for all cathode materials sintered at 700˚C, 800˚C and 900˚C. Rietveld refined results however, showed that the increase in the sintering temperature, results in a decrease in the Li2MnO3 component percentage in the layered structures. Scanning electron microscopy images further proved that the particle size increases with increasing temperature. The charge–discharge tests of coin cells demonstrated that the materials sintered at 800˚C delivered higher discharge capacities above 200 mAh/g at 20 mA/g current density when compared to the materials made at the lower temperatures. Lastly the cathode material prepared at pH 10.0 was further evaluated in a cell using lithium titanate oxide Li4Ti5O12 as anode material. The cells delivered an initial discharge capacity of 213 mAh/g at 20 mA/g within a voltage range 3.3V-0.5V. The coin cells developed in this work delivered good cycling performance.

Development of InSb/GaSb quantum dots by MOVPE

- Description: There has been an increasing interest in the modification of semiconductor band structures through the reduction of their dimensions, which simultaneously increases the band gap energy of the material and gives rise to flexibility in device properties. Advances in III-V antimony (Sb) based semiconductor fabrication have triggered the quest for extension of the emission/absorption wavelength range of this family of compounds for optoelectronic devices operating in the mid-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. An interesting material system for mid-infrared (MIR) applications is indium antimonide (InSb) quantum dots (QDs) within a gallium antimonide (GaSb) matrix. However, its band alignment and emission wavelength has been the subject of some interest and controversy over the years. This study focuses on the development of InSb/GaSb QDs by metal organic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE). The samples were grown on different substrates using various growth parameters in order to vary the size, density and aspect ratio of the dots. Interfacial growth interruptions while flowing various source precursors through the reactor were investigated in order to influence the chemical termination of the surface, and hence the resulting strain in the structures. The samples were characterized using photoluminescence spectroscopy, scanning probe microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Likewise, the band alignment, energy levels, and carrier wave functions of the samples in this work were modelled theoretically using the nextnanomat software (version 3.1.0.0). A comparison of growth on two different GaSb substrates [(100) 2° off towards <111>B ± 0.1ᵒ and (111) ± 0.1ᵒ] using similar growth conditions yielded a higher dot density on the (100) substrate compared to the (111) substrate. This was attributed to the presence of terraces/atomic steps induced by the misorientation on the (100) substrate, which invariably gives rise to increased adsorption and an enhanced sticking coefficient of adatoms. Studies on the influence of a buffer layer on the morphology of uncapped dots showed that the shape and size of the dots are sensitive to the thickness of the buffer layer. In some case a corrugated buffer surface resulted, which introduced order in the arrangement of the dots, which formed preferentially inside the troughs. An increase in the V/III ratio from 1.0 to 3.0 was found to reduce the areal density of the QDs, while an analysis of the diameter histograms showed a narrowing of the size distribution with an increase in V/III ratio. The larger size distribution at low V/III was ascribed to the increase in indium species and the increased indium adatom migration length. This leads to increased dot density and nucleation sites, and thus triggers an increase in the conversion of tiny QDs into thermodynamically more suitable larger dots via coalescence. However, as the V/III ratio increased, the number of indium adatoms available for growth on the surface reduced, which automatically led to a decrease in the migration length of indium species which is unfavourable for the production of nucleation sites and to a decrease in dot density. Low growth rates were found to be beneficial for the growth of a high density (~5×1010cm-2) of QDs. Photoluminescence (PL) analysis of the capped samples at low temperature (~10 K), using an excitation power of 2 mW, showed a PL peak at ∼732 meV. Upon an increase in laser power to 120 mW, a blue shift of ∼ 8 meV was noticed. This emission typically persisted up to 60–70 K. An increase in the number of InSb QD-layers, was observed to cause an increase in the luminescence spectral line width and a long-wavelength shift of the PL lines, together with an enhancement in the strength of the PL emission. However, high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) of the capped dots revealed the formation of an InGaSb quantum well-like structure, ∼10 nm thick, which was responsible for the PL signal mentioned above. The absence of QDs in the capped sample was attributed to inter-diffusion of Ga and In during the deposition of the cap layer, giving rise to a quantum well (QW) instead of the intended QDs. The presence of threading dislocations and stacking faults were also observed in the TEM micrographs of the samples containing multilayers, which can account for the fast quenching of the PL emission with increasing temperature from these samples. Theoretical simulations of the band alignment, wave functions and energy levels were in good agreement with the data collected from the PL spectra of the samples.

- Description: Worldwide, businesses are operating in an environment which is continuously changing, forcing them to adapt their strategies in order to remain competitive. Two changes were of particular importance to this study. Firstly, businesses are faced with an increasing demand from consumers for experiences as opposed to products and services. Secondly, consumers are demanding experiences that are not just ordinary, but are unique and memorable. As one of the largest and most diverse industries globally, tourism offers a multitude of tourist activities. Marine tourism is one of the oldest, most popular and fastest developing types of tourism globally. Marine tourism has also become popular in South Africa. This popularity might be attributed to the country’s expansive coastline and to it being home to one of the most diverse marine systems in the world. Marine tourism makes significant contributions to South Africa’s economy. More benefits can be derived from this lucrative type of tourism if attention is given to the design and provision of marine tourism experiences that go beyond average experiences, and become memorable experiences. The reason for conducting this research was to provide the South African tourism industry, and marine tourism operators in particular, with information which might assist them in designing and staging memorable experiences. Such memorable experiences could result in a competitive advantage and enable the operators to attract more customers, which in turn, will benefit the individual operators, the industry as a whole, and ultimately, the South African economy. The study focused on three marine tourism activities, namely; shark-diving, visits to marine protected areas and whale-watching. Eight dimensions, namely; Delight, Hedonism, Involvement, Knowledge, Meaningfulness, Novelty, Refreshment and Social-Interaction were identified as prospective dimensions of a memorable experience within a marine tourism context. v The study employed purposive, convenience and snowball sampling to identify potential respondents. Primary data was collected by means of an online survey and paper-based self-administered questionnaires. Four hundred and forty-four useable responses were received. The results of the empirical study showed a positive correlation between all the dimensions and memorable experience for each of the three activities and for all the activities combined. A second order factor analysis showed that the eight dimensions loaded onto two factors. The resulting factors were named as the Affective Domain (consisting of Hedonism, Refreshment, Delight and Involvement) and the Cognitive Domain (consisting of Knowledge, Social- Interaction, Meaningfulness and Novelty). A positive relationship was found between the Affective Domain and Memorable Experience and also between the Cognitive Domain and Memorable Experience. The Cognitive domain showed a stronger relationship with Memorable Experience than what the Affective Domain did, for all the activities combined. The memorability of an experience in the case of all three activities combined can, firstly, be improved by Involvement. This is closely followed by the following dimensions in the Affective Domain; Delight, Hedonism and Refreshment. Under the Cognitive Domain the factor which is most important for improving memorability of all the activities combined is Meaningfulness, followed by Knowledge, Novelty and Social-Interaction. Finally, structural equation modelling confirmed a model representing the eight experience dimensions (Delight, Hedonism, Involvement, Knowledge, Meaningfulness, Novelty, Refreshment and Social-Interaction) and identified the relationships between the dimensions and Memorable Experience. This study makes four important contributions. Firstly, it contributes to the under-researched topic of marine tourism in South Africa. Secondly, it adds to the literature on memorable tourism experiences, specifically memorable marine tourism experiences and provides a measurement instrument and framework for further research. Thirdly, the study identifies and confirms that ‘delight’ is an important dimension of a memorable marine tourism experience. vi Lastly, a model was developed which can be used by marine tourism operators to enhance their strategies, operations and facilities which will enable operators to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage.

The memorability of an experience in the case of all three activities combined can, firstly, be improved by Involvement. This is closely followed by the following dimensions in the Affective Domain; Delight, Hedonism and Refreshment. Under the Cognitive Domain the factor which is most important for improving memorability of all the activities combined is Meaningfulness, followed by Knowledge, Novelty and Social-Interaction. Finally, structural equation modelling confirmed a model representing the eight experience dimensions (Delight, Hedonism, Involvement, Knowledge, Meaningfulness, Novelty, Refreshment and Social-Interaction) and identified the relationships between the dimensions and Memorable Experience. This study makes four important contributions. Firstly, it contributes to the under-researched topic of marine tourism in South Africa. Secondly, it adds to the literature on memorable tourism experiences, specifically memorable marine tourism experiences and provides a measurement instrument and framework for further research. Thirdly, the study identifies and confirms that ‘delight’ is an important dimension of a memorable marine tourism experience. vi Lastly, a model was developed which can be used by marine tourism operators to enhance their strategies, operations and facilities which will enable operators to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage.

Secondly, the history of unresolved conflict resulted in mistrust and failure to find common ground between the parties involved in the conflict. Lastly, the source of the disputes and unresolved conflicts was traced back to the identity level. This means that the antagonistic relationships among the stakeholders spilled over into the labelling and stigmatisation of all the groups involved in wildlife management. Thus, conflict between people and wildlife in Chapoto Ward was demonstrated to be a complex issue and underlain by HHC. These findings support the new line of thinking that HWC should not be viewed as simply a problem between people and wildlife but as a conflict between stakeholders with divergent views over wildlife management which manifests as HHC. Furthermore, the degree of polarisation between groups is substantial. In light of these findings, four major conclusions are drawn. Firstly, is the need to shift from narrowly focusing on the proximate conflicts between people and wildlife, to fully understand the complexity of conflict in order to arrive at solutions that successfully mitigate conflict between people and wildlife, and to address the underlying and deep-rooted conflict between stakeholders with divergent wildlife management goals. Secondly, the need for concerted efforts to ensure the involvement of all stakeholders, including women, in wildlife management and conservation by developing structures that enhance active participation of the local people in decision-making, v which promotes the success of conservation initiatives. Thirdly, the need to address the underlying and deep-rooted conflicts over wildlife management by building positive relationships and trust between stakeholders through the holding of regular capacity building workshops based on a more respectful and inclusive process. Fourthly, is the need to consider the interests of both ethnic groups, namely the Doma and the Chikunda by gathering information on the preferences of the identity groups in order to increase cooperation among them. Overall, the thesis introduces a new lens through which one can clearly understand the complexity of the conflict between people and wildlife.

Furthermore, the study attempts to ascertain the involvement and perceptions of local communities with regard to the role of donor support in democratic governance, development and electoral dynamics. In this era and dispensation of democracy, the fledging democratic institutions require substantial donor support to perform their constitutional mandatory obligations. Most of this support had traditionally come from government. Given the weight and pressure on the government budget, the widening unemployment and inequality in South African communities, there is the need to solicit assistance from development partners for electoral administration and development. The current study, therefore, investigated community voters, political parties and the Elected or Nominated Councillors’ perceptions of donor support and democratisation. This thesis further investigated the roles and functions of the Donor Agency, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) in donor support, electoral administration and democratisation. The study utilized a mixed method approach where 384 structured questionnaires were administered and 52 in-depth interviews conducted with the respondents. The study made use of a systematic empirical inquiry and literature review to understand its subject matter. It did not only scrutinise data previously collected by other researchers but also utilised information from other sources such as tabloid surveys, brochures, bulletins and the internet. Thus, this strategy is ideal for the present study which seeks to capture the views, experiences and feelings and understanding of party officials. This study utilized the Development aid theory, political party and democratisation theories, Gouldner’s theory of Moral Norm of Reciprocity and Social Support in combination with Larzasfeld’s Voters’ behaviour theory and the social justice and equity perspective as elements of the theoretical framework.The purpose of achieving electoral confidence among the citizens is to demonstrate the value of electoral dynamics and perspectives of democratization that forms an expressed vi indicator of the relationship between politics and development. The electoral dynamics that shape political institutions, governance and its discourses in any democratic enterprise include: party affiliation, party and donor support mobilisation, voting patterns, government and the state agency’s performance. In addition, it includes economic policies towards poverty alleviation, service delivery, ethnic politics and all the state democratization policies which are pursued to bring greater relief to its citizens. Correspondingly, it is geared towards creating a balanced relationship on the donor-recipient equation and to ensure socio-economic well-being to the citizens guided by reciprocity, good governance, transparency, accountability and social justice.The emerging findings indicate that most political parties and elected councillors in the municipality receive donor support beside the traditional sources that we know such as membership dues, party subscriptions, levies, state sponsorship,fundraising for special projects and sale of souvenirs. Some of the sources were from international community and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). The study found that donors require huge returns on their support and investments. The IEC and BCMM were largely funded by Treasury for their projects and programmes. However, the BCMM also gets substantial support from sister-city relations with other municipalities abroad. Some community voters hold the view that political party funding opens the doors for the hijacking of democracy. Others hold the opinion that dishonest donors corrupt weak governments, undiscerning officials and immoral leaders. Nevertheless, some political party officials felt that donors were not all that evil. They hold the view that genuine donors help to build the capacity of officials and strengthen party structures, thereby deepening democratic ethics and culture. They were of the view that good donors promote transparency, accountability and good governance to strengthen the pillars and the threshold of democracy and the democratisation processes in emerging states in sub-Saharan Africa. On the basis of these findings, the core argument of this study is that donor support induces democratisation which mainly benefit donor communities and municipal elites at the expense of local communities. Nevertheless, the perception that development projects funded by donor agencies are meant for donor poverty alleviation, despite the absence of visible effects of trickle down, account for community members’ participation in the electoral system.

Educators' perceptions of inclusive education for learners with physical disabilities

The record in addition to this regard estimates that the wide variety of children with disabilities who are of school‐going age, yet are out of school, could be as high as half a million. The motives why disabled children are not attending school are manifold; however paramount among them is that their needs are not catered for. Inclusive education entails changing values, attitudes of people, specifically of educators and learners, policies and the practices inside schools. Since post apartheid there is only one known policy which reveals that only 20 percent of learners with disabilities were accommodated in special schools. Current statistics show that only about 64,200 learners with disabilities or impairments are accommodated in about 380 special schools. This indicates that, potentially, 280,000 learners with disabilities or impairments are unaccounted for. Analysis of the data reveals the extent of the disparities in provision for learners with disabilities, for example: The incidence of disabilities in the Eastern Cape constitutes 17.39 percent of the disabled population, yet the province has only 10.79 percent of the total number of special schools. Gauteng has 17.14 percent of the disabled population but has 25.26 percent of the schools. The Western Cape has 5.47 percent of the disabled population but has 21.58 percent of the schools. This mismatch between needs and provision is a direct result of previous apartheid policies that allocated facilities on a racial basis. Inclusive education calls for an education system, which does no longer discriminate, however welcomes all individuals, providing support and services so that every child benefits equally in mainstream schools around their regions as only 41 special schools are in the Eastern Cape. Educator perceptions as the key personnel in the inclusion and in the implementation of policies related with classroom related issued play centre stage and need to be considered.

Effect of a participatory voter education programme on secondary school students' political knowledge and attitude in Ekiti State, Nigeria

This became obvious as many Nigerian youths that are said to be future leaders, because of the crucial role played in political and social development of the nation are derailing politically. These young leaders don’t just wake up to become leaders in a day; they need to be empowered and their minds need to be redirected through appropriate civic and electoral education in order for them to be strong enough to play their inevitable roles in sustainable national development and electoral processes. The continuous use of teacher-centered strategies portends retardation in teaching-learning processes; as learning outcomes are largely reduced to mere passing of examination; leaving out the essential knowledge, attitude and practice which are required for enhancing responsible citizenry and active political participation of students. The use of conventional method has also led to poor attitude of students to socio-political issues. This study therefore determined the effect of a Participatory Voter Education Programme on Secondary School Students’ Political Knowledge and Attitude. It also investigated the moderating effects of location and gender on the dependent variables. The pre-test, post-test, control group quasi-experimental design with a 2x2x2 factorial matrix was adopted for the study. One hundred and fifty-four secondary school two students from the three senatorial districts of Ekiti State were randomly selected for the study using multi-stage random sampling and assigned to experimental and control groups. An intact class sample selection was also employed for the study. Seven null hypotheses were generated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Four instruments were developed. These were Voter Education Concepts (Political) Knowledge Test (VECKT), Voter Education (political) Attitude Test (VEAS) Instructional Guide for the Participatory Teaching Strategy and,Conventional Teaching Method Guide. The study lasted for ten weeks. Data collected were analyzed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), Estimated Marginal Means (EMM) and graphs. There was a significant effect of treatment on secondary school students’ political knowledge (F (1,385) = 1026.945; P <0.05). The Secondary school students exposed to the participatory Voter Education programme performed better (X= 29.17) than those exposed to the conventional Method ( X = 6.65). Also there was a significant effect of treatment on Secondary School Students Political Attitude (F (1,385) = 98.970; p < 0.05). Those exposed to participatory Voter Education programme performed better ( X = 63.97) than those in the conventional Method ( X = 56.27). Also, those in the Urban area obtained higher mean Political Knowledge score ( X = 19.78) than those in the rural area ( X = 16.78). While there were no significant main effect of gender on secondary school students’ political knowledge and attitude. The participatory Voter Education programme is effective in impacting Secondary School Students’ political knowledge and attitude. It was, therefore, recommended that the Participatory Voter Education programme be adopted by the Social Studies/ Civic Educators for presenting the political concepts to students in their classroom.

- Description: Orientation: The study is located in the micro environmental circumstances in Zimbabwe where the size of the informal sector is overtaking that of the formal sector. The country is experiencing a high labour turnover averaging at 19percent per year due to an unstable economic setting. The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) is experiencing an employee engagement score as low as 2.1 out of 5. This low employee engagement level and high labour turnover call for employers to find strategies not only to keep their employees motivated and engaged but also to monitor how they work. Research purpose: The study sought to examine how employee motivation mediates between workplace surveillance and employee engagement among selected employees at the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA). Motivation of the study: Public organisations often face the criticism that they do not deliver the quality of service expected and one in every five of their employees is disengaged from their work. ZIMRA’s mandate has a significant impact on the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and the organisation needs to deliver against all odds. Currently no research exists which provides information on the mediating effect of employee motivation on the relationship between workplace surveillance and employee engagement in Zimbabwe. Research philosophy, design and method: This study adopted the positivism research philosophy and a survey research design, which is quantitative and descriptive in nature. The study utilised the principles of structural equation modelling (SEM) in formulating the research hypotheses and in data analysis. Main findings: The findings of the study, through utilising SEM, were that a negative relationship exists between workplace surveillance and employee engagement and that employee motivation has a positive significant relationship with employee engagement. The study also found that workplace surveillance positively relates to employee motivation. The study also found that employee motivation partially mediates the relationship between workplace surveillance and employee engagement. Practical/Managerial implications: A negative relationship between workplace surveillance and employee engagement calls for ZIMRA management to seek employee buy-in when implementing workplace surveillance measures. A positive relationship between employee motivation and employee engagement calls for ZIMRA management to invest much in these two variables. A positive relationship between workplace surveillance and employee motivation calls for ZIMRA management to put in place policies that ensure employees do not abuse work time by doing their own business. Contribution or value-add: The study contributes to the body of knowledge on the debate around the impact of employee motivation as a mediator of the relationship between workplace surveillance and employee engagement. This study agree with the vast amount of literature that the relationship between workplace surveillance and employee motivation is not always negative.

Energy use patterns and trends: the impact of energy policy in South African low-income households

The transition to modern energy carriers is associated with welfare improvement and it is considered as an important developmental goal to achieve, in order to eradicate energy poverty. As such, the South African government has made energy poverty an issue of policy focus. Literature abounds with different measures of energy poverty; energy programmes and policies are also aimed at improving the welfare of the low-income households in terms of basic services such as electricity. As a point of entry into this study, this thesis explored energy use patterns and trends in low-income South African households. The research objectives addressed in the study included investigating the extent of energy poverty through a multidimensional energy poverty index, examining the extent to which the 'energy ladder' and 'energy stacking' models explains energy transition patterns and to examining whether the Free Basic Electricity Policy has impacted on energy choices and energy poverty. In order to contribute to energy poverty and energy policy discussion in South Africa, this study has investigated the dimensions of energy poverty amongst low-income South African households from these three different perspectives (objectives). A positivist approach, by using a quantitative method was used to underpin the study. The study utilised secondary data, which were from the National Income Dynamics Survey and Income and Expenditure Survey. The former was used for the analysis of the multidimensional energy poverty index and energy transition patterns whilst the latter was used for the analysis of the impact of the Free Basic Electricity Policy. The four waves of the National Income Dynamics Survey, with 2008 as the base year and the 2010/2011 version of the Income and Expenditure Survey were used whilst the data were processed through the quantitative software package, STATA version 12. The data were then analysed using the multidimensional energy poverty framework by Nussbaumer et al. (2011) and econometric models, which best fit the objectives. The result of the panel analysis, which assesses the multidimensional energy poverty for low-income households in South Africa showed that low-income households in both urban and rural areas are in a moderate state of energy poverty but different levels. However, the cross-sectional analysis revealed that the percentage of low-income households that are energy poor is reducing for the rural households but increasing for their urban counterparts from 2008 to 2014. The panel and cross-sectional results of the contribution of the energy dimensions in multidimensional energy poverty shows that the low-income households are especially energy poor in terms of heating fuel. The findings from the econometric estimates partly confirmed an energy ladder behaviour for the energy choice for cooking. An energy stacking behaviour was confirmed for the low- income households for these energy services - heating and lighting. Moreover, it was found that with respect to cooking and heating, low-income households living in a modern dwelling, having a small household size and residing in an urban area are less likely to use transitional or traditional energy carriers but most likely to use modern energy carriers. In addition, low-income households are more likely to use modern energy carriers for their cooking and heating in 2010, 2012 and 2014 than in 2008. For lighting energy service, low- income households living in a modern dwelling in an urban settlement are most likely to use modern energy carriers for lighting and less likely to use transitional energy carriers or candles. Only in 2014 were low-income households more likely to use modern energy carriers for lighting than in 2008. The results further showed that modern energy carriers have the highest probability of being preferred for lighting followed by cooking and lastly heating. Also emerging from the findings are that more urban low-income households are receiving the Free Basic Electricity (FBE) grant than their counterparts in the rural areas. The probability of low-income households owning entertainment/education appliance and food preserving appliance is positively influenced by access to Free Basic Electricity. The low- income households living in an urban settlement and in a modern type of dwelling supported this result. However, household size does not seems to support this result should it grow larger.

- Description: This study focused on the engagement of fathers in early childhood care and education provisioning in one education district in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Significantly, a specific programme to get fathers engaged in the early childhood of their children is not well addressed by the National Integrated Early Childhood Development (ECD) Policy of 2015, despite the notion that early childhood education provisioning demands the total involvement of multiple partners and other stakeholders. The research drew its theoretical framework from the ecological system theory. Ecological system theory argues that, in order to understand human development, one must consider the entire ecological system in which growth occurs. This study utilized the quantitative research approach to obtain primary data in line with the positivist paradigm. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The instruments were scrutinized by the research supervisor to ensure validity and were pre-tested in the field study. The reliability was obtained at a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, of 0.94 and 0.96. The results were presented in the form of pie chart and grouped into different tables of sixteen. Pearson’s ProductMoment Correlation, Analysis of Variance and t-test were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Two structured questionnaire instruments were used in the study, Principal and Teachers’ Views Questionnaire (PTVQ) and Father’s and Mother’s Views Questionnaire (FMVQ). The Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select the sample for this study. To this end, 16 principals, 12 teachers, 18 mothers and 18 fathers of children in the selected sample served as respondents. The results reveal that stakeholders have positive views about fathers’ engagement in early childhood care and education provisioning. The result indicated that schools do provide support mechanisms to encourage fathers’ engagement in early childhood care and education provisioning. The results showed that a number of strategies are used by the schools. The result also indicated that functional policy and practice will no doubt improve and encourage the engagement of fathers in ECCE provisioning. Furthermore, the study concluded that stakeholders have positive views on the engagement of fathers in ECCE provisioning. The study recommends that all stakeholders and media houses should be involved in the effective dissemination of information, and that the South African government should advocate for ECCE policies that lay out concrete commitment and guidelines for fathers and, above all, symposia, lectures, workshops, and seminars should be organized for fathers.

Most parents view the school as an instrument for the achievement of children and parents with limited or no education may have little or no interest in supporting children’s academic work. The aim of this study was to investigate how parental involvement in children’s academic work can be enhanced. It focused on three rural secondary schools in the Amathole West Education District in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The study particularly investigated how school schools involved parents in children’s academic work and how they, together with principals, teachers and learners view their involvement in children’s academic work. Guided by Epstein’s theory of parental involvement, this qualitative study was premised on the interpretative paradigm. Face to face interviews and focus group discussions were used to collect data from three high schools in the Amathole West Education District. Purposive sampling was used to select participants who comprised a target population of 24 participants. It emerged from the data that although schools were trying to involve parents in children’s academic work, their activities were uncoordinated, occurred at school level rather than classroom level and focused less on learners’ academic work. Parent’ involvement in their children’s academic work was not touching the real curriculum issues; rather it touched on the outside. The data also showed that parents’ academic statuses influenced their participation as those who had little education seemed to be reluctant to participate on academic issues. The study concludes that there was lack of coordinated strategies by schools to involve parents in children’s academic work. The study, therefore, recommends that Coordinated Grade-based Parent-Teacher Forums be established. This will assist in opening a planform for teachers and parents to engage on teaching and learning discussions and curriculum debates.

Estuarine microalgal bloom dynamics at multiple temporal scales

- Description: Microalgal communities sustain the ecological functioning of estuarine ecosystems through the provision of numerous ecosystem services. As such, gaining an understanding of the processes that govern spatio-temporal patterns of phytoplankton communities is key to the effective management of these ecosystems. However, detailed investigations of estuarine phytoplankton dynamics, and particularly harmful algal blooms (HAB), are largely absent in South Africa. Therefore, geared at addressing these knowledge gaps, this study was initiated to elucidate the processes shaping estuarine phytoplankton bloom dynamics at multiple temporal scales. Initially, five permanently open estuaries, each with varying types and levels of anthropogenic pressures, were selected to test the efficacy of an estuarine eutrophic condition index to flow variability (‘Annual’ study). Results from this study highlighted the sensitivity of the proposed index to environmental perturbations (e.g. flood events), whilst also identifying freshwater inflow variability and anthropogenic disturbance as the key processes shaping microalgal responses at an annual scale. Next, the agriculturally-influenced Gamtoos and Sundays estuaries were further investigated to elucidate the role of natural and anthropogenic drivers in defining microalgal responses (‘Seasonal’ study). Despite similarities in nutrient input and temperature patterns, phytoplankton bloom conditions (> 20 μg Chl-a l-1) were episodic and flow-dependent in the Gamtoos Estuary, whilst those in the Sundays Estuary were persistent and seasonal. Related to its reduced hydrodynamic variability – i.e. consistent nutrient-rich baseflows and reduced propensity for flushing events – persistent undesirable disturbances were highlighted for the Sundays Estuary, including: summer bottom-water hypoxia (< 2 mg l-1) and exceptional proliferations (> 550 μg Chl-a l-1) of two HAB species (Heterosigma akashiwo and Heterocapsa rotundata). Finally, fine-scale ecological research was undertaken in the Sundays Estuary to identify the processes – abiotic and biotic – that facilitate HABs (‘Daily’ and ‘Hourly’ studies). Findings from the ‘Daily’ study, identified inorganic nutrient availability (i.e. nitrate and phosphate) and mesohaline conditions (ca. 10) as the key bottom-up controls influencing the magnitude and duration of spring/summer phytoplankton blooms. Additionally, bottom-water hypoxia was explicitly linked to the decay of a single HAB species. During the ‘Hourly’ investigation, four known HAB-forming species were recorded at bloom concentrations. Model results indicated that variability in temperature, salinity profiles and nitrate concentrations were significant in facilitating the occurrence of HAB species. Finally, local biotic interactions (e.g. interspecies competition, diel vertical migration and mixotrophy) were recognized as key mechanisms shaping phytoplankton communities. The persistent occurrence of HABs is a new feature in South African estuaries and continued research is needed to recommend management responses. Ultimately, this research highlights the multitude of processes at work shaping phytoplankton variability in estuaries. From a broad perspective (i.e. seasonal and annual), processes such as freshwater inflow regimes, degree of anthropogenic disturbance, as well as seasonal temperature and nutrient supply patterns are the key processes. At a more refined scale (i.e. hourly and daily), local processes including salinity preferences, nutrient availability, diel light cycles and internal biotic interactions are the key drivers organising phytoplankton dynamics. Given the potentially severe ecological consequences of disrupting natural phytoplankton dynamics (e.g. HABs), an element of ‘unpredictability’ should be restored to the hydrological and chemical makeup of highly-regulated estuaries to prevent the continued exacerbation of eutrophic symptoms.

- Description: Microalgal communities sustain the ecological functioning of estuarine ecosystems through the provision of numerous ecosystem services. As such, gaining an understanding of the processes that govern spatio-temporal patterns of phytoplankton communities is key to the effective management of these ecosystems. However, detailed investigations of estuarine phytoplankton dynamics, and particularly harmful algal blooms (HAB), are largely absent in South Africa. Therefore, geared at addressing these knowledge gaps, this study was initiated to elucidate the processes shaping estuarine phytoplankton bloom dynamics at multiple temporal scales. Initially, five permanently open estuaries, each with varying types and levels of anthropogenic pressures, were selected to test the efficacy of an estuarine eutrophic condition index to flow variability (‘Annual’ study). Results from this study highlighted the sensitivity of the proposed index to environmental perturbations (e.g. flood events), whilst also identifying freshwater inflow variability and anthropogenic disturbance as the key processes shaping microalgal responses at an annual scale. Next, the agriculturally-influenced Gamtoos and Sundays estuaries were further investigated to elucidate the role of natural and anthropogenic drivers in defining microalgal responses (‘Seasonal’ study). Despite similarities in nutrient input and temperature patterns, phytoplankton bloom conditions (> 20 μg Chl-a l-1) were episodic and flow-dependent in the Gamtoos Estuary, whilst those in the Sundays Estuary were persistent and seasonal. Related to its reduced hydrodynamic variability – i.e. consistent nutrient-rich baseflows and reduced propensity for flushing events – persistent undesirable disturbances were highlighted for the Sundays Estuary, including: summer bottom-water hypoxia (< 2 mg l-1) and exceptional proliferations (> 550 μg Chl-a l-1) of two HAB species (Heterosigma akashiwo and Heterocapsa rotundata). Finally, fine-scale ecological research was undertaken in the Sundays Estuary to identify the processes – abiotic and biotic – that facilitate HABs (‘Daily’ and ‘Hourly’ studies). Findings from the ‘Daily’ study, identified inorganic nutrient availability (i.e. nitrate and phosphate) and mesohaline conditions (ca. 10) as the key bottom-up controls influencing the magnitude and duration of spring/summer phytoplankton blooms. Additionally, bottom-water hypoxia was explicitly linked to the decay of a single HAB species. During the ‘Hourly’ investigation, four known HAB-forming species were recorded at bloom concentrations. Model results indicated that variability in temperature, salinity profiles and nitrate concentrations were significant in facilitating the occurrence of HAB species. Finally, local biotic interactions (e.g. interspecies competition, diel vertical migration and mixotrophy) were recognized as key mechanisms shaping phytoplankton communities. The persistent occurrence of HABs is a new feature in South African estuaries and continued research is needed to recommend management responses. Ultimately, this research highlights the multitude of processes at work shaping phytoplankton variability in estuaries. From a broad perspective (i.e. seasonal and annual), processes such as freshwater inflow regimes, degree of anthropogenic disturbance, as well as seasonal temperature and nutrient supply patterns are the key processes. This study is premised upon the assumption that the concepts of the developmental state and socioeconomic development are inextricably interrelated. The concept of a developmental state has gained a significant amount of traction in both academic and non-academic circles in recent times. This study took the form of a case study of Rwanda and its developmental trajectory since the country gained independence in 1962. By adopting a historical approach, this study determined that the factors which continue to retard socioeconomic development in post-colonial and post-genocide Rwanda are rooted in a lingering colonial legacy. Although Rwanda has achieved a significant degree of socioeconomic development since 1994, the sustainability of the nascent developmental state which appears to be emerging could still be undermined by ethnic divisions. Accordingly, it was recommended on the basis of the findings of this study that the Rwandan state and its development partners should pursue transformative socioeconomic policies which ensure an equitable distribution of socioeconomic resources, in order to facilitate the creation of an enabling environment for local entrepreneurs and a reduction of dependence upon foreign aid through the effective mobilisation of domestic resources.

This study sought to investigate how social enterprises in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) contribute to sustainable social development within the municipality and the country at large. The study endeavoured to answer the following research questions: what is the knowledge level among the selected stakeholders on social enterprise in BCMM? What is the scope, application, and sustainability of selected social enterprises in BCMM? What is the contribution of selected social enterprises in social development in BCMM? What are the bottlenecks associated with the application of social entrepreneurship in BCMM? These questions were answered through mixed methods approaches and techniques, where both qualitative and quantitative data was collected and analysed. The data was collected through in-depth interviews (key informant technique) and a min-survey which was administered to users of the social enterprises. Qualitative data was analysed thematically, while quantitative data was statistically analysed with help of SPSS software. The interpretation of the findings was premised on pragmatic and transformative paradigms. The study further used theoretical lenses such as empowerment theory, capability approach and positive theory of social enterprise to support and explain the findings. The main findings showed that: the selected stakeholders conceptualized social enterprises through the African lens of communal living; the social enterprises widely provided their services across a range of sectors and geographical locations; the social enterprises had direct and indirect contribution to socio-economic development in BCMM. This was specifically through provision of employment, training and skill development among others; the future of social enterprises in the country is bright as many sectors presented opportunities for social investment; and social enterprises face financial constraints, lack of skills in the sector, and competition from the mainstream market. The recommendations from this study address government entities, social services providers and practitioners, social enterprises, and researchers on pertinent endeavours to improve the growth and development of social enterprises. The study concludes that social enterprises are: vital vehicles of socio-economic development, more especially for the marginalized segment of the populations; tools for reducing inequality; platforms for innovations, community participation and conduits of empowerment interventions. Thus, social enterprises play dynamic role and presents potential for capable sustainable social development in the local communities and the South African community at large.
