Representations of the ‘other’: a comparison between Roman descriptions of Britons, Gauls and Germans pre-AD 300 and Sir Harry Smith’s portrayal of the Xhosa 1830s – 1850s

- Description: Stereotypical representations of an ‘ethnically’ or ‘racially’ different ‘other’ in ancient texts would seem to reappear throughout history. By comparing Roman views of Britons, Gauls and Germans, with Sir Harry Smith’s views of the Xhosa, this study seeks to explore the extent to which these stereotypical images were employed and for what reasons. Through close textual analyses, the descriptions of these peoples are examined and compared, taking into consideration the different authors’ context and agendas. By highlighting Caesar’s views of the abilities of the ‘other’ and Tacitus’ judgements of the moral character of the ‘other’, compared with Smith’s view of the same, the study aims to draw out the role of the author’s ‘self’ in complex and contradictory representations of the ‘other’, while arguing that various overwhelmingly negative images served to justify imperial conquest and rule. The extent to which the ‘other’ was perceived as remote and different from themselves, epitomised in the dichotomy between the ‘barbarism’ and ‘civilisation’, is examined, comparing a variety of Roman authors with Smith. The similar idea of ‘civilising missions’ are discussed, while acknowledging the differences between the policies of the Roman and British Empires toward the ‘other’. The connections between how the ‘other’ was portrayed in relation to ‘Empire’ and the ways in which they were treated is also explored stressing even further the different approaches taken by Roman and British authorities to include these peoples within their Empires. While certain stereotypes are shown to have persisted from Roman times, reappearing in the writing of Sir Harry Smith, summed up in the archetypal ‘barbarian’, I argue that the use of these images was varied, inconsistent and reflected more the motives and personalities of the writers themselves, whofor the most part ascribed to imperial ideologies.

From here recommendations for best practice in contemporary biokinetics are suggested that encourage interactions and connections between the professional and his/her patients, which move beyond the mere physiological interpretations currently dominating health discourse.

- Description: The objective of the study is to analyze the impact of the ECRDA in projects managed by Eastern Cape emerging farmers. In this study, emerging farmers are farmers that are participating in the market and have intentions to produce and sell at a large scale. The study also investigates the challenges facing the emerging farmers supported by ECRDA as well as the support given to these farmers by ECRDA. The study is based on randomly selected farmers around Eastern Cape Province that are supported by ECRDA with finance to buy production inputs. Six interviews have been conducted around Eastern Cape, one in each of the six district municipalities. The information was transcribed and verbatim text was produced. From the verbatim text about 8 themes and sub- themes were identified and were analysed using qualitative content analysis method. The themes that were identified are: The first theme was the lack of infrastructure make a conducive farming environment. The second was the insufficient service from ECRDA officers, as well as those from the department of agriculture. The third theme that emerged was the availability of farming land from which the clients plough, and also use as a grazing land for their livestock. The fourth one focuses on the access to capital, and the challenges that are encountered when applying for loan at ECRDA. The fifth theme is the concern about the safety of the maize they plant, not only from the unattended livestock, but as well as thieves, when the maize is ready. The sixth theme is the availability of market, where the farmers are able to sell their produce when it is ready. The seventh theme was skills development, and whether farmers are trained in order to be effective and efficient farmers. The last theme focuses on loan repayment, how the farmers repay the loan from the ECRDA. These themes constitute the main challenges that hinder the sustainability of emerging farmers’ projects.

Selfhood, identity and madness in the works of Milan Kundera and Peter Carey

- Description: Despite all the critical attention Milan Kundera’s and Peter Carey’s fiction has received, relatively little has been said about the way in which these authors problematise selfhood. In this study, I argue that these two writers share a preoccupation with the strictures placed on the individual by his/her location in language and discourse. I show that they deconstruct subjectivity with a view to intimating the possibility of momentarily transcending discursive control, and thereby inhabiting authentic selfhood. In addition, I demonstrate that both authors draw attention to the nature of language through their thematisation of madness, and I then trace the implications of this nexus between language and madness for the reader, who of course is a subject in language. My contention in this regard is that Carey and Kundera seek to instil in the reader a self-reflexive awareness of the ways in which his/her location in language shapes his/her perception of others. In turn, this awareness charges the reader with the responsibility of questioning his/her judgements, and thereby enables him/her to negotiate a measure of authenticity from his/her position in language.

The government through the Department of Social Development introduced various statutory requirements to ensure the protection of vulnerable children in South Africa. Through the use of a qualitative approach, this study investigated the duties of social workers working within statutory interventions to ensure the safety of abused and neglected children in two distinct areas in Amathole District, Eastern Cape. Semi-structured interviews from the study indicated that, social workers play major roles to ensure that vulnerable children are catered for. Their duties which are guided by law have seen so many abused children being removed from their place of abuse to better places of safety. However, despite the vigorous work done by social workers, statutory interventions still faces many challenges which make them ineffective.

- Description: Saving clubs or stokvels have been around in many parts of the World, under different names, for many years and they have been instrumental in teaching people how to save. This research sets to investigate the possible use of stokvels as vehicles, channels or conduits for wealth accumulation among migrant population living in the inner city of Johannesburg. Participants’ contributions and the extent this translates into wealth accumulation among members were critically examined. Furthermore, the study explored whether gender plays any role in terms of stokvels membership and the reasons thereof. The hypothesis of this research was that incomes from stokvels contribute to wealth accumulation of migrants in the inner city of Johannesburg. This study used both quantitative and qualitative research methods to address the research questions and gather relevant data. The use of a mixed approach was adopted as it allows a deeper exploration of the different research objectives and questions of the study. Thematic content analysis was used to analyse the data. The findings of this study have revealed that there is a positive relationship between membership to stokvels and wealth accumulation. Moreover, trust and social capital were found to be pivotal in ensuring success of these groups in terms of who should be accepted into the group. However, many other factors, such as the level of education, the length of stay in South Africa and the marital status of participants could have an impact on wealth status of participants.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the role and contributions of income-generating projects with regard to women; the necessary conditions for a successful cattle production project; the major challenges in women’s income-generating projects, and how income-generating projects can be strengthened, all in relation to this cattle project.The study is underpinned by the sustainable livelihood approach and literature on micro-financing of women’s projects in various countries. The study is based on qualitative methodology using a case study design and methods of data collection included semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and participant observation. The data was analysed using thematic analysis and sub-themes that arose in the study and thereafter all the data was grouped by a process of coding. The results indicated that the Sadomba cattle project has benefited the project members in terms of income generation by the selling of cattle and milk, for agricultural purposes (draught power) and also income they obtained from hiring their cattle to other community members in rainy seasons. The income generated has assisted them to send their children to school and attain higher education.In addition, it promotes community engagement when they share paddocks and dip tanks. However, despite these benefits, they face a number of challenges such as long distances to the market, a lack of microcredit and the unavailability of exotic breeds. Therefore, there is need to integrate the conditions that are necessary for successful income generating projects to the Sadomba cattle project.

The income generated has assisted them to send their children to school and attain higher education.In addition, it promotes community engagement when they share paddocks and dip tanks. However, despite these benefits, they face a number of challenges such as long distances to the market, a lack of microcredit and the unavailability of exotic breeds. Therefore, there is need to integrate the conditions that are necessary for successful income generating projects to the Sadomba cattle project.

- Description: My play script is a docu-drama inspired by the 1950s Drum journalists: Can Themba, Bloke Modisane, Nat Nakasa, Henry Nxumalo, Lewis Nkosi, Peter Magubane, Casey Motsitsi and Todd Matshikiza. The setting is a Sophiatown shebeen through which the characters move in and out. The central dramatic exploration hinges on female characters’ experiences rather than the perspectives of the male journalists connected to them. I dramatise documented events such as Modisane’s wife leaving him and taking their daughter with her, or a woman who buried her lover’s body after he was beaten and stabbed to death. There are other twists and turns based on the Drum journalists writings. I play with the seriousness of politics, love affairs, and the comedy of their daily lives. My influences come from plays such as Nongogo (1959) and Sophiatown (1986). The Beat is dedicated to all the women who have been silenced and as a result became products of their consequences. Their voices remind me as a theatre maker that my poems and plays might arrive in me as pure SONGS (Dipina) or a CRY (Kodiyamalla). Sometimes their inspiration will spring from my traditional family rituals, as a PRAISE song/s (Dithoko/ Thoko), or from a simple memory of a childhood church song, a HYMN (Difela/ Sefela). At times these words will present themselves as a source of where one comes from, CLAN NAMES (Seboko/ Poko). These stories will find me in the dusty streets of my village and township HERSTORY… they will touch, move, provoke, push and force me to vomit on page words that are subjects of that which we are even when silence seems inevitable. , My poetry collection fuses Sesotho and English, often within the same poem, as a way of showing how I live within and between two cultures. I write to celebrate these two tongues without compromising either language and allow each poem, to express its own musical component, tone, rhythm, and pace as it moves between stage and page. My poems converse about difficult subjects from a feminine voice. They look at family structures and dynamics, using everyday household things as metaphors. They take on deep family narratives of generational curses, births, deaths and love. There are also some more political poems about community outrage, the exploitation caused by outmoded culture and tradition, and about the nightmare that constantly wants to come out of the township.

Literacy remains a continuous problem in South Africa, as learners lack motivation to read or are struggling to read, write, and learn in a language that is unfamiliar to them. Researchers such as Street (2005) believe that literacy should not be viewed only as a set of skills to be mastered, but rather as something which must be understood in its broader social context. In accordance with this theory, the South African organisation PRAESA uses their Nal'ibali campaign to promote 'reading for enjoyment' and the formation of 'reading clubs' in order to improve learners' motivation to read and thus their literacy competence by increasing their exposure to pleasurable reading experiences. In this study it is argued that reading for enjoyment is beneficial to primary school learners' literacy competence as well as their personal and social development. In this study, Grade 5, 6, and 7 learners belonging to the reading club at a primary school in Port Elizabeth were observed over a six-month period. Data was collected through ethnographic observation of the reading club sessions and compiled into a detailed expository and sequential report. This narrative was then analysed in order to determine to what extent the learners had benefited in terms of their development from their participation in the reading club's activities. The analysis of the narrative demonstrated that learners' literacy competence, as well as personal and social skills such as self-confidence and tolerance, had been enhanced by the learners' voluntary participation in enjoyment-centred experiences with literacy. The findings of this study demonstrate that, in under-resourced schools and communities lacking a strong reading culture, an extra-curricular 'reading club' with a focus on reading for enjoyment was able to improve learners' literacy skills and provide opportunities for holistic growth by increasing learners' motivation to read.

My fiction embodies these realities using the flatness of the fairy tale form while incorporating the humorous, the bizarre and the surreal. Some of the stories build dystopian worlds using the manifestation of the unfamiliar as a mirror of our psyche in an overpopulated and consumer-driven society. Others create contained worlds where the fantastical is fostered only by the narrator being drawn into an inner life. All the stories take us through inner landscapes with the humans, animals and objects around us that can pulse with so much meaning and then none at all.

This study entails a three-fold orientation, namely: to show the extent of the impact of socio-historical, political and cultural factors on both the translation process and translation product; secondly, it demonstrates the fact that a merging of theoretical principles and practical methods is necessary and possible for the study of literary translations; thirdly, it answers the questions of why the same literary works continue to be retranslated and why every generation of Kafka scholars and readers will need their own translations of his works. This research, furthermore, proposes that the position of literary translation should be elevated since this kind of translation can reveal more about the cultural and linguistic intricacies of the translation process. Seeking to contribute to the broader framework of the translation studies discipline, this thesis also makes a case for translators to reveal their translation process, in the form of notes or prefaces, in order to allow for informed studies of translations. The exact relation between phonological awareness and naming speed, and their relation to literacy in different languages are also disputed. In this study, the contribution of phonological awareness and naming speed to literacy is examined in 52 Grade 3 isiXhosa speaking children. Measures for literacy included oral reading fluency, silent reading, comprehension and spelling. Phonological awareness was the biggest contributor to reading fluency, accuracy, comprehension and spelling, confirming that phonological processing is important for reading in all languages studied to date. The role of naming speed was narrower, contributing to the fluency and accuracy of reading only in the group with poor phonological awareness. The results can inform the teaching of reading isiXhosa where an approach that explicitly emphasises orthography-phonology relations at the phoneme level may be well suited especially since there are many letter groups to learn. This would enable higher accuracy in orthography-phonology correspondences and should also improve automaticity, which was lacking in the group with low levels of phonological awareness. The Psycholinguistic Grain Size Theory of reading can adequately inform the understanding of reading in isiXhosa, and findings from other languages with similar requirements can inform the teaching of reading in isiXhosa.

- Description: This treatise is preoccupied with the unparalleled five bio-mes found in Nelson Mandela Bay, its current endangered state and the scope of which an architectural intervention can serve to re-mediate and facilitate the lack in conservation and awareness. It is through an initial awareness of the vegetation diversity in Nelson Mandela Bay and its current need for formal protection, that the need for an architectural intervention is realized. The typological nature of the architectural intervention is derived from an interrogation into the historical development and the contemporary function of botanical institutions. This investigation, coupled with the existing need for a botanical garden in Port Elizabeth, establishes the Botanical Visitors’ Centre as the typology. Precedents are investigated, identifying typological functions as well as the facilities’ various contextual positions within the Botanical Garden. Functions are categorized spatially and their relationships analyzed. An understanding of the typologies functional, spatial and contextual nature, coupled with an ecologically aligned value statement, identify a set of architectural issues. These issues are interrogated through the critical examination of various precedents. An appropriate architectural language is established in terms of materiality, physicality and contextual integration. The need for a Botanical Garden within Port Elizabeth is established and an appropriate site selected. Shark River Valley is selected in recognition of its existing and historic natural integrity within the city, its current under-utilized state, and the resultant architectural opportunity to facilitate ecological remediation and urban re-integration. A contextual investigation preoccupied with the historical, ecological and urban issues of the valley informs a set of constraints and informants. A contextually informed urban and ecological intervention is proposed serving as a framework for the integration of the building. The building is then realized through a combined understanding of typology, ecological integrity and contextual understanding. The contextual position of the building, as well as its spatial layout, is determined through precedent investigation which is then shaped and adapted in response to the defined site issues. Physical and technological issues are addressed in a practical manner while maintaining the ecological integrity of the building. - Description: This treatise is preoccupied with the unparalleled five bio-mes found in Nelson Mandela Bay, its current endangered state and the scope of which an architectural intervention can serve to re-mediate and facilitate the lack in conservation and awareness. It is through an initial awareness of the vegetation diversity in Nelson Mandela Bay and its current need for formal protection, that the need for an architectural intervention is realized. The typological nature of the architectural intervention is derived from an interrogation into the historical development and the contemporary function of botanical institutions. This investigation, coupled with the existing need for a botanical garden in Port Elizabeth, establishes the Botanical Visitors’ Centre as the typology. Precedents are investigated, identifying typological functions as well as the facilities’ various contextual positions within the Botanical Garden. Functions are categorized spatially and their relationships analyzed. An understanding of the typologies functional, spatial and contextual nature, coupled with an ecologically aligned value statement, identify a set of architectural issues. These issues are interrogated through the critical examination of various precedents. An appropriate architectural language is established in terms of materiality, physicality and contextual integration. The need for a Botanical Garden within Port Elizabeth is established and an appropriate site selected. Shark River Valley is selected in recognition of its existing and historic natural integrity within the city, its current under-utilized state, and the resultant architectural opportunity to facilitate ecological remediation and urban re-integration. A contextual investigation preoccupied with the historical, ecological and urban issues of the valley informs a set of constraints and informants. A contextually informed urban and ecological intervention is proposed serving as a framework for the integration of the building. The building is then realized through a combined understanding of typology, ecological integrity and contextual understanding. The contextual position of the building, as well as its spatial layout, is determined through precedent investigation which is then shaped and adapted in response to the defined site issues. Physical and technological issues are addressed in a practical manner while maintaining the ecological integrity of the building. The resultant Botanical Centre aims to be rooted in its contemporary universal function through the contextual integrity of its architectural response.

- Description: This treatise will be focused on the design of a Mixed-use Facility in Mauritius, which will be implemented within an existing fishing village, Grand Gaube, located along the Northern coast of the Island. This site has been chosen due to its high fishermen population relying on fishing for their livelihoods. The proposed design will be aimed at a sustainable fishery which will involve the development of offshore bank fishing as opposed to the traditional lagoon fishing. With a focus on promoting a better catch quantity and quality, the increase in domestic production will be aimed at supplying the local market whereby a significant demand for seafood exists. In the process, the project will aim to alleviate poverty for the local fishermen communities through increased trade and job creations, while being in line with the Government’s vision for the development of the fisheries sector in Mauritius. The facility will include a Fish Landing Terminal, a Fish Processing Plant, and a Fish Market, for the production of a branded local product while accommodating the fishermen’s daily activities, as well as a highly public platform to create an activated public environment. In doing so, the proposed architectural intervention will act as a catalyst for urban and social change.

- Description: Most youth from disadvantaged groups in South Africa’s townships lack adequate social facilities to spend time. This situation also prevails in the Ibhayi townships on the periphery of Port Elizabeth. This treatise emerged out of the author’s interest in the township of Kwazakhele (one of thirteen townships which constitute Ibhayi) and his concern for the poor sense of urban space prevailing in the area. To this end, the research conducted in this treatise investigated the nature of Kwazakhele from a macro scale to a precinct scale in terms of the township’s location, connectivity, spatial organisation, organisation of activities, lateral urban sprawl, built fabric, and socio-economic condition. From this investigation, it was determined that Kwazakhele functions as an enclaved system within the greater system of Ibhayi. The major issues affecting Kwazakhele were identified as fragmentation, disconnection, dispersal of activities, urban sprawl, and a lack of urban legibility. The issue of dispersed activities in Ibhayi had been identified as one of the major contributors to the poor urban environment. Because addressing this issue has been recognised as an effective way of improving the urban environment, the aim of this treatise is to address this issue and provide an architectural and urban response which attempts to reduce the dispersal of activities in Ibhayi in general and particularly in Kwazakhele. Through the interrogation of the nature of dispersed activities in Ibhayi, it was observed that, while activities are mostly dispersed throughout the townships, there are areas where higher concentrations of certain activities have emerged. Therefore, in response to this, a conceptual strategy has been proposed to consolidate the activities in these areas into concentrated centres of activities which are connected via a series of pedestrian movement paths. Kwazakhele had been identified as having a higher (yet inadequate) intensity of sporting facilities and had therefore been proposed as a concentrated centre of sporting and recreational activities. An appropriate site was then selected to be developed as the heart of this centre, based on a number of criteria. The resultant programme was a Football Academy and Community Sports Centre. This result was based on the needs of the community and the aims of the conceptual urban strategy. The role of the facility was then interrogated and it was determined that it should function as a major structuring element in the township. This lead to an investigation into the nature of positive urban space in a township through the interrogation of three precedents. The principles established from this interrogation were used to help structure the nature of the proposed facility in terms of its response to the public realm and its level of urban integration. The resulting building is responsive to its urban environment and sensitive to the needs of the community it serves. It plays a key role in structuring the urban environment of Kwazakhele and therefore it increases the urban legibility, while addressing the predetermined urban and architectural issues.
