- Description: Carbon paste electrodes (CPE) containing iron(II) phthalocyanine (FePc) and iron(II) tetrasulfophthalocyanine ([FeTSPc]4−) were used for the detection of dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT). Both complexes showed catalytic activity towards the detection of DA and 5-HT. The catalytic activities of [FeTSPc]4− and FePc are compared with those of [CoTSPc]4−, [NiTSPc] 4−, CoPc and NiPc complexes and with those of metal(II) tetraaminophthalocyanines (MTAPc, where M=Ni, Co or Fe) complexes. A significant improvement in the reversibility of the DA oxidation couple was observed on [FeTSPc]4− and FePc modified CPE. [FeTSPc]4− and other [MTSPc]4− modified electrodes inhibited the detection of ascorbic acid (AA), a major interferent in the detection of DA. Simultaneous detection of DA and 5-HT on [FeTSPc]4− modified CPE, in the presence of AA, showed that AA does not interfere with the determination of both species. Also no interference between DA and 5-HT was observed.

The equilibrium and rate constants for the coordination of the nitric oxide were K = 2.3 × 104dm3mol-1 and kf = 7.5 dm3mol-1s-1, respectively. The coordination of nitrite to [CoIItmtppa]4+ occurred with an equilibrium constant of K = 2.0 × 102dm3mol-1 and a rate constant of kf = 4.0 × 10-3dm3mol-1s-1. - Description: In this work a selection of octasubstituted phthalocyaninato zinc complexes were synthesized and their photochemistry studied. The substituents included cholesterol (3a), estrone (3b), naphthol (3c) and phenoxy groups substituted with CH3 (3d), C(CH3)3 (at two positions, 3e), C(CH3)3 (3f), NO2 (3g), NH2 (3h), COH (3i), COOH (3j), and H (3k). In general, complexes containing electron-donating groups attached to the phenoxy ring (e.g. 3e and 3f) were found to be photochemically unstable with photobleaching quantum yields of the order of 10−3. In the presence of electron-withdrawing groups (3g, 3i, and 3j) the photobleaching quantum yields were of the order of 10−6 to 10−5. Singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ) ranged from 0.01 to 0.73. The lowest ΦΔ was observed for the highly aggregated complex 3c. All the complexes showed aggregation at high concentrations. Electrochemical reduction using a thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry cell showed that the complexes become more monomeric following reduction.

The absorption and MCD spectral band deconvolution calculations of complex 1 gave two A terms in the Q-band region. The A terms are assigned to 2A2 → 2E1 transitions. Cyclic voltammograms of 1 and 2 showed reversible oxidation couples at E1/2 = −0.28 V (for 2) and −0.25 V (for 1) vs ferrocenium/ferrocene (Fc+/Fc). The second oxidation exhibited a complicated behavior for both complexes. The reduction couples for 2 were observed at E1/2 = −0.61, −1.64, −1.97, and −2.42 V, and for 1 they were observed at E1/2 = −0.62, −1.60, −1.86, and −2.27 V vs Fc+/Fc. - Description: This paper reports on the catalytic behaviour of cyanocobalamin (VB12) towards the reduction and oxidation of nitric oxide. When VB12 is adsorbed on glassy carbon electrodes, it catalyses the reduction of nitric oxide (NO) in pH 4 and 9 buffers. In the absence of NO, cyclic voltammetry shows that VB12 is reduced by a one-step two-electron reduction from CoIII to the CoI species. Addition of NO at pH 9 to solutions of VB12 resulted in the splitting of the cyclic voltammetry peaks as a result of a consecutive one-electron reduction of the central CoIII metal in VB12 to CoII and finally to CoI. The catalytic peak for oxidation of NO on a glassy carbon electrode modified with VB12 was observed at 1.21 V versus Ag∣AgCl, at pH 9. The products of the catalytic reduction of nitric oxide include ammonia and hydroxylamine.

An electrochemical technique, adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry, has been employed in this study to investigate the in-situ formation of a complex between aluminium and acetylcholine. The stability of the resulting complex was compared with that of the in-situ complexes formed between acetylcholine and sodium or calcium. From the shifts in the reduction potential of the metals on addition of acetylcholine it is concluded that a strong complex is formed between acetylcholine and aluminium. Much weaker complexes are formed between calcium or sodium and acetylcholine. These results have important implications in the aetiology of Alzheimer's disease-in which brain aluminium concentrations are known to be high and brain cholinergic function is lower than normal.

- Description: Melatonin, a pineal secretory product, and its precursors, tryptophan and serotonin, were examined for their metal binding affinities for both essential and toxic metals: aluminium, cadmium, copper, iron, lead, and zinc. An electrochemical technique, adsorptive stripping voltammetry, showed the varying abilities of melatonin and its precursors to bind the metals in situ. The results show that the following metal complexes were formed: aluminium with melatonin, tryptophan, and serotonin; cadmium with melatonin and tryptophan; copper with melatonin and serotonin; iron(III) with melatonin and serotonin; lead with melatonin, tryptophan, and serotonin; and zinc with melatonin and tryptophan. Iron(II) showed the formation of an in situ complex with tryptophan only. - Description: Melatonin, a pineal secretory product, and its precursors, tryptophan and serotonin, were examined for their metal binding affinities for both essential and toxic metals: aluminium, cadmium, copper, iron, lead, and zinc. An electrochemical technique, adsorptive stripping voltammetry, showed the varying abilities of melatonin and its precursors to bind the metals in situ. The results show that the following metal complexes were formed: aluminium with melatonin, tryptophan, and serotonin; cadmium with melatonin and tryptophan; copper with melatonin and serotonin; iron(III) with melatonin and serotonin; lead with melatonin, tryptophan, and serotonin; and zinc with melatonin and tryptophan. Iron(II) showed the formation of an in situ complex with tryptophan only. These studies suggest a further role for melatonin in the reduction of free radical generation and metal detoxification, and they may explain the accumulation of aluminium in Alzheimer's disease.
