Specifically, it sought to contribute to ongoing research dedicated to developing a better understanding of whether, how, and why regulations pertaining to fatigue management may need to change. By exploring the perspectives of blunt-end stakeholders, the study aimed to uncover insights into the challenges and potential gaps in current regulations, with the ultimate goal of informing potential regulatory adjustments to enhance aviation safety. Methodology: A cross-sectional, qualitative exploratory design investigated perceptions about fatigue and fatigue management among blunt-end stakeholders in the South African aviation industry. Data was collected through online semi-structured interviews and written open-ended questionnaires to capture diverse perspectives. The methodology aimed to comprehensively understand fatigue-related experiences and perceptions among pilots and cabin crew, considering the unique challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were selected using purposive and snowball sampling, ensuring representation from various regulatory categories and industry sectors. The study employed a thematic analysis approach to analyse data collected through online semi-structured interviews and written open-ended questionnaires. Thematic analysis facilitated the identification of key patterns and themes in the perceptions of blunt-end stakeholders within the South African aviation industry regarding fatigue and fatigue management Results: The thematic analysis of data from thirteen South African aviation industry stakeholders unveiled insights into crew fatigue challenges and regulatory concerns. Participants emphasized crew fatigue as a significant safety risk linked to entrenched crew mentalities, where instances of disregarding fatigue management protocols posed imminent safety risks. Additionally, outdated regulations were cited, hindering optimal crew rest periods and modern fatigue mitigation technologies, with discrepancies in regulatory support exacerbating challenges across operational contexts. Aviation stakeholders expressed apprehensions regarding the efficacy of existing Flight and Duty Regulations, advocating for amendments to enhance fatigue management practices. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated fatigue issues, leading to shifts in crew morale, increased stress levels, and regulatory challenges, necessitating adaptive fatigue management strategies and proposed risk mitigation plans, including regulatory adjustments and enhanced stakeholder engagement. Discussion: The study investigated the intricate landscape of fatigue-related risks within the aviation industry, recognizing the systemic and context-specific nature of these challenges. It is evident from our findings, in line with previous research, that fatigue within the aviation sector is not merely an isolated issue but a multifaceted consequence of systemic factors. Our study highlights the pressing need for revisiting the current Flight and Duty Periods (FDPs) and overall fatigue management strategies to address these underlying systemic issues effectively. Unlike static safety concerns, fatigue-related risks evolve dynamically, influenced by technological advancements, industry practices, and external factors such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Our analysis elucidated the complex interplay between safety protocols, operational standards, and the well-being of crew members, emphasizing the need for a nuanced approach in mitigating fatigue-related risks. Central to our findings is the recognition of the limitations of existing regulations in adequately addressing emerging challenges associated with crew fatigue. Our study underscores the imperative of regulatory agility in safeguarding both passengers and crew members, advocating for continuous evaluation and refinement of regulatory frameworks. Specifically, there is a critical need to revisit and adapt current FDPs and fatigue management strategies to align with the systemic causes of fatigue identified in our research. Conclusion: This study contributed a comprehensive analysis of crew fatigue in South African aviation, focusing on perspectives of blunt-end stakeholders. It highlighted widespread recognition of fatigue's safety implications, exacerbated by factors like economic stressors and regulatory deficiencies, including those intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. The effects of different shift patterns on nurses’ sleep-wake behaviours in selected, private healthcare facilities

- Description: Nurses are required to work shifts to provide 24-hour care, in which they complete physically and mentally demanding tasks. The length and type of shifts, particularly night shifts interfere with the natural sleep-wake behaviours, leading to extended wakefulness and overall reduced sleep, and increase the likelihood of sleepiness during subsequent shifts. This can in turn affected various cognitive processes such attention, vigilance and alertness, which are necessary during the care process. Sleepiness as a result of working shifts has also been associated with an increased risk accidents and error during the delivery of care. Given the unique demands and ways in which workplaces are structured, each context arranges its shifts in unique ways and thus, in order to determine how to manage the effects of shift work, it is important to understand how it affects self-reported fatigue and sleep, of, in this case, nurses. While there has been extensive research on this in the global north, to date, there has been limited research aimed at examining the effects of shift work on nurses’ sleep-wake behaviours and fatigue in the South African context. Therefore, the aim of this study is to characterise shift arrangements in selected private facilities and explore its effects on private healthcare nurses. This study adopted a cross-sectional, survey design using an amended version of Standard Shiftwork Index. The questionnaire included demographic and shift details and explored the impact of the shift systems on nurse sleep-wake behaviours and disturbances and fatigue and workload. It was distributed among shift working nurses registered with the South African Nursing Council across three selected, private, healthcare facilities in the Eastern Cape, over a two-month period. The responses were analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics, with open-ended questions analysed using a thematic analysis. A total of 51 nurses completed the survey. Nurses worked 12-hour shifts which included night shifts and day shifts with fixed start and end times. Over time was commonly reported and generally, nurses reported having very little control over their shift arrangements. Overall, nurses slept less than what they reported they needed on duty days, with nurses working both day and night shifts reporting to sleep less than the globally recommended required sleep. This was compensated for by longer sleep durations during days off. The data collection revealed that three different shift arrangements were in use, including permanent day shifts, permanent night shifts and rotating shift work including nights, with permanent night nurses working significantly more consecutive shifts (seven) than the other two shift types and having significantly more days off (seven) as well. While there were no significant differences in self-reported sleep across the three shift types, permanent night nurses were found to have the shortest sleep. During days off, rotating nurse reported significantly longer sleep times compared to day shift workers which may point to the need to catch up from sleep debt. Rotating nurses experienced the greater total disturbances to their sleep than permanent day and permanent night shift nurses. While not statistically significant, it may point to the fact that rotating shift workers could not obtain regularly timed sleep (due to having to change their schedules) compared to permanent day and night nurses. Workload (physical, emotional, mental and time pressure) did not differ between the shifts (day or night) or the shift types, but did reflect a heavier workload, possibly due to the data collection occurring during the 5th wave of the COVID 19 pandemic. This study highlights that nurses in private healthcare facilities are working extended hours which were associated with reduced total sleep, irrespective of the nature of the shift, with rotating shift nurses experiencing some degree of greater disturbances to their sleep. The number, duration speed and direction of the shifts of rotating nurses needs to be explored further, whilst also exploring the influence of individual factors on sleep-wake behaviours of nurses. - Description: Fatigue in aviation results from the complex interaction of various factors (both work and non-work-related) that are important to understand when attempting to manage it. Managing fatigue effectively is important given that it has and continues to influence crew wellness and aviation safety. One of the ways of managing fatigue is through appropriately designed Flight Time Limitations (FTLs) however; in South Africa there have been calls from the unions and the crew to update these in line with the latest science and operational demands and insights. Doing this requires the generation of context specific data, which this thesis aimed to provide as an initial step. Firstly, this study aimed to explore the reported prevalence of fatigue across the South African aviation industry. Secondly, it elucidated what factors (both work and non-work related) crew perceived contributed to fatigue and lastly, the crew‟s perceptions regarding the current FTLs were explored. Methods: To realize the aims of the study, an online survey was developed using existing literature initially, and through consulting with and getting information from aviation industry stakeholders and other experts in the field of aviation and fatigue. This consultation (which occurred over a number of iterations of the survey) ensured that there was a balance between the scientific and the actual operational perspectives on how best to explore crew perceptions around fatigue. The finalized survey was divided into five parts: part one was consent to participate; part two included questions pertaining to the participants‟ demographic information; part three included questions pertaining to the crews‟ perceptions around fatigue (its prevalence, its impact on safety and how it affected crew); part four explored crew‟s perceptions on fatigue contributory factors, both work and non-work related; finally part five included questions pertaining to crew perceptions about the current South African FTLs, specifically their concerns, suggestions for improvement and any aspects they considered as fatigue mitigating. The survey was made available via the South African Civil Aviation Authority‟s (SACAA) website as well as via the industry stakeholder‟s networks that encouraged all crew across the different sectors of the industry to participate. All numerical data collected were analysed descriptively through inferential statistics, while the qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: 194 participants completed the survey, 167 were from cockpit and 27 were from the cabin crew. The results of the study highlight that there is a high perceived prevalence of fatigue. The crew also recognized that fatigue is a significant safety risk, but less indicated that fatigue interfered with their ability to do their duties. Crew reported that the length of duties, number of sectors flown, insufficient sleep at night, early sign-on‟s, late sign-offs, working too many consecutive days in a row, inadequate or irregular sleep before and during periods of duty, night flying, bad weather, severe turbulence, having young children or dependents to look after, financial stress, extended commuting to get to and from work, and poor diet were some of the work and non-work-related contributory factors to fatigue. In line with these findings, questions around the perceived concerns about the current FTLs revealed that crew were concerned about unclear definitions of the civil aviation regulations (CARs), the lack of control of disruptive rostering schedules, periods of high workload due to the number of sectors flown per duty, the length of duty periods and effects of being on standby duty, inadequate rest between duties and strings of duty. The crew also had concerns regarding the Flight Duty Periods (FDPs) where the crew were concerned with the flying limits being used as targets by the operators, a lack of science applied to the FDPs, and that the current FDPs are outdated. The recommendations included limiting disruptive rostering schedules by altering standby provisions for the crew, instilling a block roster schedule, disallowing double signing on and off on the same day, and reducing split shifts. The crew also recommended adjusting duty durations by adjusting daily and monthly limits, tapering duty lengths, but also limiting discretionary extensions. Increasing rest provision was another recommendation suggested by the crew and included increasing the number of rest days off as well as the minimum hours of rest between duties needs to be increased. The fatigue mitigating aspects were minimal if any. Conclusion: Overall the study revealed that there is a high perceived prevalence of fatigue within this sample of the South African aviation industry and that the concerns outlined by crew around the contributory factors to fatigue are consistent with previous research, but also reflect the unique operating context of South Africa. This study serves as a base from which to explore more specific areas of the crew working time that are disruptive to sleep. Increasing rest provision was another recommendation suggested by the crew and included increasing the number of rest days off as well as the minimum hours of rest between duties needs to be increased. The fatigue mitigating aspects were minimal if any. Conclusion: Overall the study revealed that there is a high perceived prevalence of fatigue within this sample of the South African aviation industry and that the concerns outlined by crew around the contributory factors to fatigue are consistent with previous research, but also reflect the unique operating context of South Africa. This study serves as a base from which to explore more specific areas of the crew working time that are disruptive to sleep. Thus, a systems approach based on the work system model by Smith and Carayon-Sainfort (1989) was adopted for this study. A systems analysis was conducted in two parts: 1) a literature analysis, and 2) expert interviews. Results: Both the literature analysis and the interviews indicated that pilot fatigue in short-haul flight operations represent composite system outcomes influenced by various factors. The factors identified were structured (systematised) into categories, namely organizational factors, task-related factors, environmental factors, factors linked to technology and tools, and non-work-related factors specific to the individual pilot. An example of a task-related factor would be the performance by pilots of multiple take-offs and landings; organizational factors include work time arrangements and duty scheduling (e.g. unpredictable schedule, early starts/late finishes, number of flight sectors in a shift, extended working hours, numerous consecutive work days, standby duties, flight, duty and rest limitations (regulations and guidelines); and short turnaround periods); environmental factors might include the small pressurised cockpit environment, movement restriction, very low humidity, low air pressure, vibrations, high noise levels, low light intensity light, and inclement weather); there are many examples of how tools and technology utilized by pilots might affect their fatigue levels; and finally, pilot-specific non-work-related factors would include things like the pilot’s age, health (lifestyle), family stress, work experience and sleep environment. All of these factors were identified during the literature analysis and have a significant bearing on how fatigue could present in short-haul pilots/co-pilots. Other important fatigue-related factors revealed during the expert interviews included, organizational culture, time management, health implications of fatigue, and management of fatigue. Conclusions: Pilot fatigue is a complex and multi-factorial physiological condition. There are many interacting components which contribute to pilot fatigue in short-haul operations. These should be viewed from an integrated perspective and holistic, systems-based approaches should be taken to manage these issues, particularly in the context of short-haul operations. This would optimize pilot performance and well-being and, most importantly, improve the safety of the work environment to enhance overall operation safety. Limitations: The study does not quantify the contributions made to pilot fatigue by the various factors explored. Therefore, care needs to be taken when designing and implementing interventions based on this research.

There were three test conditions, which permitted each variable to be kept constant in at least one of the three test conditions. Methods: Thirty-six apparently healthy university students were recruited for the study. The exercise was of 35 minute duration for each condition, with the data collection for HR (physiological response), RPE (perceptual response), and power output (workload) occurring at two minute intervals from the eighth minute until the thirtieth minute. The participants were required to perform a peak-power-output test in order set the relative performance ranges for each participant in order to elicit an observable fatigue response from all the participants. The three conditions included constant HR response, constant workload, and constant RPE response where each participant performed all of the above conditions on separate days.Results: The perceptual (RPE) response increased significantly (p<0.05) over time in all three test conditions, even under the constant RPE condition where it was expected to remain unchanged throughout the test duration. The HR response only demonstrated a significant (p<0.05) increase over time under the constant workload condition. Lastly, workload remained constant in all three testing conditions. Conclusion: Participants may be able to exercise for longer periods during sub-maximal exercise if they disregard the RPE warning response. In the current study, the RPE response illustrated that participants were being exerted more over time; however, the participants still had physiological and workload capacity to continue exercising. This research project has confirmed the fact that fatigue is a multifaceted phenomenon. Furthermore, it has been illustrated that RPE response alone as an indicator of fatigue onset may be misleading as participants did not breach the HR and workload steady state during the current research. Therefore, it may be more appropriate to assess fatigue onset through the assessment of more than one fatigue variable in order to ensure increased accuracy of the participants’ fatigue state assessment.

- Description: The negative effects of localised muscle fatigue on accidents, injuries and poor work performance are well known, as is the realisation that modifying task characteristics can minimise fatigue development. A large amount of literature has investigated the effects of task-dependent factors on localised muscle fatigue, most studies have focussed on prolonged or intermittent static (isometric) exertions. Few studies have investigated muscle fatigue development during more complex tasks, namely those which resemble common work activities and which tend to be intermittent and dynamic in nature. More specifically, the interactions between the main intermittent parameters - duty cycle, force level, and cycle time - during dynamic exertions are poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cycle time and combinations of duty cycles and force levels on the development of muscle fatigue during submaximal dynamic exertions while the overall mean muscle load was kept constant. A two-factorial repeated-measures experiment was developed for this study. Nine experimental conditions, each lasting 16 minutes, aimed at inducing muscle fatigue in the middle deltoid muscle via intermittent dynamic shoulder abduction and adduction motions at three cycle times (30, 60, and 120 seconds) and three combinations of duty cycles and force levels. The percentage of muscle activation during one cycle (i.e. the duty cycle) varied depending on the exertion intensity (force level) so that the overall mean muscle load remained consistent throughout all experimental conditions, namely at 20% of maximum force exertion. As a result, the three duty cycle/force level combinations were: 0.8/25% of maximum voluntary force (MVF), 0.5/40%MVF, and 0.4/50%MVF. Muscle fatigue development was inferred by changes in peak torque, total work, average power, local Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE), and surface electromyographical (EMG) activity (time domain and frequency domain).Two-factorial analyses of variance with Tukey post-hoc tests were used to identify significant condition effects at p<0.05. All dependent measures showed that muscle fatigue was induced by the 16-minute fatigue protocol. Peak torque, total work, average power, and EMG percentage of maximum showed that cycle time and the duty cycle/force level combination had no effect on the development of muscle fatigue, whereas the measures evaluated during the 16-minute fatigue protocol did. The cycle time of 120 seconds induced the greatest change in six of the eight variables, while the duty cycle/force level combination (0.8/25%) also resulted in the greatest effect in six of the measures. Fatigue was also found to be dependent on the interaction of cycle time and duty cycle/force level combination. The conclusion draws from this study is that shorter cycles and activities with short activation periods, and proportionally longer rest breaks result in the lowest fatigue developments.

This study aimed to assess whether or not a mechanism that regulated fatigue during sustained task execution could be identified and whether this mechanism resulted in regulation patterns that were distinct to a specific task. An additional aim of the study was on assessing whether the manner in which performance, psychophysical and subjective variables were modified over time followed a similar regulation pattern. The research design was aimed at inducing task-related fatigue twice on two different occasions in the same participants and evaluating the resultant changes in fatigue manifestation. This was done to assess the ability of participants to cope with fatigue as a result of previous experience. The research protocol included three tasks executed for an hour aimed at targeting and taxing the sensory, cognitive, motor resources, each task performed twice. 60 participants were recruited to participate in the current study, with 20 participants – 10 males and 10 females – randomly assigned to each of the three tasks. The cognitive resource task consisted of a memory recall task relying on working memory intended to evaluate the extent of reductions in memory and attention. The sensory resource task consisted of a reading task measuring visual scanning and perception designed to evaluate the extent of reduced vigilance. The motor resource task consisted of a modified Fitts’ stimulus response task targeted at monitoring the extent of movement timing disruption. Performance measures comprised of: response delay and the number of correctly identified digits during the cognitive resource task, the amount of correctly identified errors and reading speed during the sensory resource task, response time during the motor resource task, and responses to simple auditory reaction time tests (RTT) initiated at intervals during the task and then again at the end of each task. Physiological measures included ear temperature, eye blink frequency and duration, heart rate (HR), and heart rate variability (HRV). Subjective measures included the use of the Ratings of Perceived Exertion Category Ratio 10 scale (RPE CR 10) to measure cognitive exertion and the NASA-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) to index mental workload. Eye blink frequency and duration, HR and HRV were sensitive to the type of task executed, showing differing response patterns both over the different tasks and over the two test sessions. The subjective measures indicated increasing RPE ratings over time in all tasks while the NASA-TLX indicated that each task elicited different workloads. Differing task performance responses were measured between the 1st test session and the 2nd test session during all tasks; while performance was found to improve during the 2nd test session for the motor and sensory tasks, it declined during the cognitive task. The findings of this research indicate that there was a regulatory mechanism for fatigue that altered the manner in which performance, psychophysical and subjective variables were modified over time, initiating a unique fatigue regulation pattern for each variable and each task. This regulation mechanism is understood to be a proactive and protective mechanism that functions through reducing a person’s ability to be vigilant, attentive, to exercise discernment, and to direct their level of responsiveness, essentially impacting how the body adapts to and copes with fatigue. This regulation mechanism is understood to be a proactive and protective mechanism that functions through reducing a person’s ability to be vigilant, attentive, to exercise discernment, and to direct their level of responsiveness, essentially impacting how the body adapts to and copes with fatigue. The main aim was to establish whether progressive impairment of driving control over a prolonged drive could be attributed to a depletion of attentional resources, as proposed by Resource Theory, or to a withdrawal of effort, as proposed by Effort-Regulation Theory. As a multicomponent skill, driving requires perception, cognition and motor output. The secondary aim of this research was therefore to assess whether a prolonged drive impairs stage-specific information processing. Participants (n=24) in three experimental groups performed a 90-minute simulated drive wherein they were expected to keep the bonnet of a car on a lane (tracking task). The three groups differed in terms of lane width: small, medium and large, corresponding to low, medium, and high task-demand, respectively. To assess the impacts of this task on stagespecific information processing, participants performed a set of resource specific tests before and after the prolonged drive. Each task had two difficulty variations to ensure that performance decrement was due not only to the task-characteristic, but specifically to resource depletion. The purpose of the initial session was to collect specific demographic, anthropometric and physiological data and injury history information from each player. In addition, this first session allowed for habituation with the treadmill, the jump meter and all other equipment involved in experimentation. The second testing session involved electrode attachment sites being identified on player’s dominant leg. The areas were then shaved, wiped with an alcohol swab and left to dry, to ensure good connectivity. Pre- and post- measures of muscle activity and functional strength of the lower limbs were recorded in the Department of Human Kinetics and Ergonomics. The protocol took place at the Kingswood High Performance Centre, which is in close proximity to the initial testing site. The protocol involved players bowling eight overs (48 balls). During the protocol, accuracy, ball release speed and perceptual measures were recorded at the end of each over. After the protocol, players were driven back to the Human Kinetics and Ergonomics Department where post-testing measures were completed. The dependable variables of interest were muscle activation, functional strength of the lower limbs, ‘local’ ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), body discomfort, accuracy, and ball release speed. Results: For all muscles it was shown that, as the speed increased so did the muscle activity in players’ lower limbs. There were no significant changes in muscle activity preversus post-protocol. There was however, a general trend of decreasing muscle activity post protocol at higher testing speeds. There were significant (p<0.05) decreases in peak power following the simulated eight over bowling spell. ‘Local’ RPE displayed a significant (P<0.05) increase with each additional over and were observed to reach the ‘heavy’ category. The players’ highest discomfort area was in the lower back, with 13 players perceiving discomfort in this region following the eight over spell. The shoulder and chest were another two areas player’s indicated discomfort with eight players selecting the dominant shoulder. Seven players complained of the dominant side pectoral muscle, leading foot and dominant latissimus dorsi muscle being uncomfortable. Interestingly, the dominant pectoral showed the highest body discomfort ratings amongst players. There were no significant changes in accuracy between overs although there were large interindividual differences in accuracy points between players. The decrease in ball release speed observed during over seven was shown to be significantly (p<0.05) lower than overs one to four. Conclusion: The power output and perceived strain results of the players, appears to indicate the presence of fatigue in players. However, the results are not conclusive, as the fatigue was not shown in muscle recruitment patterns, as well as the body discomfort ratings. There was a non-significant trend observed in the lower limb muscle activation decreasing at higher speeds. Players were able to maintain accuracy. However, the significantly lower ball release speed observed during over seven showed players performance decreasing.

When given the option, humans tend to switch between tasks frequently. This behaviour can be used to determine the change in self-regulation strategies. An understanding of human task-switching behaviour is important for the design of job rotation systems. However, there is a lack of evidence explaining the factors motivating the need to switch between tasks. This study aims to use physiological, subjective and behavioural measures to explain the factors influencing selfregulation through the act of task-switching. Three primary hypotheses were developed to explain the factors underlying taskswitching behaviour. It was hypothesized that the degree of boredom experienced, the effort required to perform the task and the resource usage induced by the task are factors responsible in deciding task switching behaviour. Participants (17 males and 17 females) switched freely between five different information-processing tasks for the 45 minutes. Participants were allowed to switch back and forth between tasks and did not have to conduct all five tasks. The following measures were recorded during the experiment: subjective measures of boredom, mental effort, task frustration and perceived performance of the tasks; energy consumption and physiological measures of effort (HR, HRV and body temperature) and behavioural measures, including duration and frequency of task. Perceived boredom was found to differ among the tasks and before and after the experiment. The average boredom rating at each task transition for all tasks exceeded a score of 2.5 out of a possible 4. There were no significant changes in physiological measures between the beginning and end of the task trials. However, changes in physiological measures showed a decrease in effort investment following task transition. Heart rate variability was lower for externally-paced tasks than for self-paced tasks, despite the differences in cognitive demands. The most frequent task-switch combination occurred between tasks of high and low cognitive demand. The least frequent task-switching combination occurred between tasks of similar characteristics, which produced no differences in physiological responses. Task-switching behaviour was influenced by the degree of boredom, and therefore more time was spent on less monotonous tasks. The level of physiological effort required for the task affected task-switching behaviour. Task switches were made before any changes in effort took place in an attempt to maintain task efficiency. It appears plausible that a task switch was made to reduce effort investment and activation levels. The type of information processing resources used by different tasks affected the task-switching combinations. Although majority of drivers are aware of the dangers of fatigued driving, accidents related to this continues to contribute to a large percentage of all accidents, between 5 and 50% (Nilsson et al., 1997; Williamson et al., 2011). The purpose of the research was to establish the effect that fatigue renders on an individual’s peripheral visual field and to determine whether a decrement in driving performance occurs at the same rate as a decrement in peripheral visual performance. Fatigue was induced through time of day as well as time on task. Sixteen students from Rhodes University were recruited, subject to no previous sleep disorders, among other criteria. Each participant was required to partake in two conditions, namely a day condition (09h00–11h00) and a night condition (23h00– 01h00). Each condition consisted of a 90 minute dual task; the primary task was a tracking task, in which participants were instructed to track a white line as accurately as possible. A secondary peripheral response task was introduced, in which participants were instructed to respond as quickly as possible to the peripheral stimuli, by pressing one of two clickers located on the steering wheel. The peripheral stimuli were located at 20º, 30º and 40º visual angle. Psychophysiological, performance and subjective measures were obtained before, during and after the main task. The pre- and post-tests included core body temperature, critical flicker fusion frequency threshold, a digit span memory test, Wits Sleepiness Scale and a NASA-TLX questionnaire. The psychophysiological and performance measures of heart rate, heart rate variability, blink frequency, blink duration, lane deviation, number of saccades towards peripheral stimuli, response time to peripheral stimuli and the percentage of missed peripheral responses were all recorded throughout the 90 minute main dual task. The results revealed significant differences (p<0.05) for heart rate variability, number of saccades towards peripheral stimuli and the Wits Sleepiness Scale, with regard to time of day. For time on task, significant effects were established for lane deviation, response time to peripheral stimuli, percentage of missed peripheral responses, heart rate, heart rate variability, blink frequency, blink duration, critical flicker fusion frequency threshold, core body temperature and the Wits Sleepiness Scale. Eccentricity was analysed and found to be significant for response time to peripheral stimuli, as well as for the percentage of missed peripheral responses; there was a significant increase in both measures with an increase in the stimuli eccentricity. No significances were established for time of day or between the pre- and post-tests conducted for the digit span memory performance; however, a significant interactional effect between the two was established. When assessing the percentage rate of decrement of driving performance compared to the percentage rate in the decrement of the missed peripheral responses, it was found that the percentage rate of decrement was equal for both measures. Thus from this research it can be seen that, concurrent with a decrement in driving performance, there are adverse effects on an individuals' peripheral vision, which have great implications for the safety of workers in industry and transport, as well as motorists. A secondary peripheral response task was introduced, in which participants were instructed to respond as quickly as possible to the peripheral stimuli, by pressing one of two clickers located on the steering wheel. The peripheral stimuli were located at 20º, 30º and 40º visual angle. Psychophysiological, performance and subjective measures were obtained before, during and after the main task. The pre- and post-tests included core body temperature, critical flicker fusion frequency threshold, a digit span memory test, Wits Sleepiness Scale and a NASA-TLX questionnaire. The psychophysiological and performance measures of heart rate, heart rate variability, blink frequency, blink duration, lane deviation, number of saccades towards peripheral stimuli, response time to peripheral stimuli and the percentage of missed peripheral responses were all recorded throughout the 90 minute main dual task. The results revealed significant differences (p<0.05) for heart rate variability, number of saccades towards peripheral stimuli and the Wits Sleepiness Scale, with regard to time of day. For time on task, significant effects were established for lane deviation, response time to peripheral stimuli, percentage of missed peripheral responses, heart rate, heart rate variability, blink frequency, blink duration, critical flicker fusion frequency threshold, core body temperature and the Wits Sleepiness Scale. Eccentricity was analysed and found to be significant for response time to peripheral stimuli, as well as for the percentage of missed peripheral responses; there was a significant increase in both measures with an increase in the stimuli eccentricity. No significances were established for time of day or between the pre- and post-tests conducted for the digit span memory performance; however, a significant interactional effect between the two was established. When assessing the percentage rate of decrement of driving performance compared to the percentage rate in the decrement of the missed peripheral responses, it was found that the percentage rate of decrement was equal for both measures. Thus from this research it can be seen that, concurrent with a decrement in driving performance, there are adverse effects on an individuals' peripheral vision, which have great implications for the safety of workers in industry and transport, as well as motorists. It was also established that time on task is possibly a more appropriate variable to consider than time of day, when implementing work schedules and rest breaks in industry, transport and fields alike, as more significant findings were seen for time on task compared to time of day. , Adobe Acrobat 9.53 Paper Capture Plug-in

Suboptimal preparation for the Ironman triathlon can have detrimental effects on mental and physical condition. The purpose of this longitudinal investigation was to examine the relationship between a number of performance changes and fatigue markers during training for an Ironman as well as immediately after the event, in an attempt to better understand the effects of ultraendurance training. Eighteen athletes training for the Ironman; South Africa, 2009 were recruited for the study. Over the 6 month data collection period body mass, training load (TRIMP and Session x RPE methods), physiological responses (waking heart rate, postural dizziness, sleep ratings), changes in psychological state (profile of mood states - POMS), reported immunological responses (symptoms of illness), biochemical changes (salivary cortisol and alpha amylase) and performance (8 km submaximal running time trial (TT) and race day performance) were measured. These responses were compared to a control sample (n=15). Results show a significant increase (p<0.05) in training load (3899.4 ± 2517.8) four weeks prior to the event. Fatigue scores significantly increased (p<0.05) concurrently with this significant increase (p<0.05) in training. TT performance did not significantly (p<0.05) alter during the time course of training. It was however strongly correlated to training load (R2=0.85) and modestly related to race performance (R2=0.65). The signs and symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) were prevalent during the training period, decreasing during the taper and race period. Large standard deviations were found within the majority of the responses. During the final two weeks of preparation, tension scores were significantly increased (p<0.05) while training load significantly decreased (p<0.05) during the final week of preparation.
