  • Description: The girls who sang this song belonged to a group in the community half way between the sophisticated christians who have been to school and broken away from their background, and the so-called "Red blanket people", those who retain their African religion and customs including the red ochre coloured blankets, cosmetics and beads. They have been to school for a short while, wear European style clothes as far as possible and while falling short of the standards of the better educated consider themselves above and apart from the 'reds' who although 'un-schooled' are elegant in their traditional dress and beadwork. They were all under 18 years of age. In the interval between the songs, they went off to fetch their sticks and struck them together during the song to mark the rhythm.   • Description: The girl playing this mouth bow whistles out of the side of her mouth as well as resonating the notes in the usual manner. She used the open string and a stopped note, stopping it with her thumbnail and first finger. The use of this indigenious instrument and its style of music explains the ease with which Gcaleka people take to the small concertina. The harmonies produced in the mouth being on the true harmonic series makes the transition to the concertina a simple matter for simple tunes. Notes of the bow, 292 and 260.
