- Description: "Hey, child-first finish your digging. The mysteries have been listening for me. Mistakes in dancing do not carry as far as home. Listen to Mutanda drum, but first finish your grinding." Greeting child of the Mudzatsa Tree. There is a double meaning in ngoma mutanda. In the first instance it means a 'mystery or 'magic' - an unknown force, and in the second the plain literal translation of the 'Mutanda drum', a conical hollow wooden drum made of Mutanda wood. "Child of Mudzatsa Tree", refers to the eerie noise of the cracking beanpods of this tree, especially at night, and a person called by this name is only half a creature, a sprite or gnome. Three topical songs with mbira dza WaNdau and deze resonator.

The very day he was born, he said: "Give me my trousers, I'm off to the mines." On the way he met a white man who was looking for 40 boys. "All right, my boss, here I am." - So he was given 40 sickles and in a trice he had reaped all the corn and came back for more work. He did otehr wonderful things and his employer then began to realise he would have to pay him 40 salaries! So he employer laid various traps for him, like digging a hole for him to fall into so that he should be buried alive, but he evaded them all. And in the end he was paid in full. - "a lump sum" and went off home with just reward. A story.

- Description: The girls who sang this song belonged to a group in the community half way between the sophisticated christians who have been to school and broken away from their background, and the so-called "Red blanket people", those who retain their African religion and customs including the red ochre coloured blankets, cosmetics and beads. They have been to school for a short while, wear European style clothes as far as possible and while falling short of the standards of the better educated consider themselves above and apart from the 'reds' who although 'un-schooled' are elegant in their traditional dress and beadwork. Party song with clapping.

- Description: The low roaring sound towards the end is produced by the lips and cheeks of the women and is not produced in the throat, (as the Xhosa do). The women usually used a gourd when making this sound, holding their mouths into the orifice of the gourd. They appear to blow through their pursed lips first on one side and then on the other, alternately. No gourds were used on this occasion. This item which was recorded at the Wankie Colliery several hundred miles from the district of origin of the performers, appears to have been influenced by foreign mission techniques, especially in the correct iambic stress at the end of lines. Installation of a Chief with clapping
